Poorly Coached Buccaneers

October 13th, 2019

Joe hates typing this, but right now Bucco Bruce Arians and his massive coaching staff look like the latest in a long line of overpaid and second-rate offseason Bucs free agent signings.

Joe sees it. Team Glazer surely sees it.

Where’s the improvement?

Two Sundays in a row, the Bucs were not competitive against a division opponent. That just can’t happen. Also, the Bucs are masters at dumb penalties — see the end of the first half — and Jameis Winston does not look like a better coached player, which was Priority 1 for the Arians administration.

Does the league consider the Bucs a physical team, one that’s going to beat you up? One that’s going to test your will? The effort hasn’t been bad, but it certainly is very average.

Joe hangs a load of this on Arians. He is the one who insisted this season was not a rebuild — while Joe said it was.

Arians is the one who made the big decisions on personnel. And Arians is a CEO coach driving the bus of this entire team.

Joe is not writing off Arians, but Joe will keep a keen eye on how Arians responds. Joe thinks swift and deep accountability is in order. Lineup changes should come for the Bucs’ next game — and Arians should find a few players to throw on the trade market. And either fire the sports science staff that set the London plan, or at least reconsider your trust in them.

Surely, the veteran head coach has seen enough. Joe sure has.

Start the rebuild/retool/rethink now.

A good comment. I (sadly) suspect you are correct.

This has always been a rebuild no matter what Arians says….

We will get some comp picks…..maybe trade a couple of player and start over perhaps with a new QB.

serious question, why is jameis always squinting?

  8. Miketb19 Says:

It’s simple Jameis is making them look bad the guy can’t throw the damn ball away and that’s on Jameis we all know Arians is a great coach but it was premature to think he could turn this team around in a single year this team has some glaring needs on the offensive line, pass rushers, and veteran presence in the secondary not named Hargreaves because that guy is a bum. Arians, Bowles, and Leftwich are doing the best they can with what they have to work with

  14. bucsfaninchina Says:

We saw it in the pre-season. Once the o line started to get hurt, was it any surprise that the back-up unit has sh*t the bed and will continue to do so until Cappa and Dotson get healthy again?

Jameis is absolutely not blameless, but the Panthers only needed to rush 4 all game to disrupt his rhythm, and as we all know a rhythm-less Jameis is a bad Jameis.

  15. unbelievable Says:

Too bad 813 is too big of a homer to call out vh3bust.

Failed 1st round picks both fall on Licht at the end of the day.

  16. DalvinCookRules Says:

Winston looked pretty bad today, but Mike Evans and the OL looked worse. I think you have to get some friggin talent on the OL and go find a shutdown CB somewhere. You can coach a game around Winston’s weaknesses enough to get you to the playoffs. If you can make Winston look good enough, you can recapture some trade value for him, because…

Yes, it is obvious this team will need a different QB to be championship caliber, but before that, you will need those other pieces in place to first become playoff caliber.

  17. Jean Lafitte Says:

    sorry 5 int’s ..I was expecting 7

  18. 813bucboi Says:

  19. cmurda Says:

Mike Evans is becoming an average receiver. Gives up on plays. Winston threw that where Mike Evans should go up and make a play. Mike is atrocious and he may be falling right off the top 10 WR list. Godwin is the new #1 on this team. Byron better learn how to draw up plays for OJ because despite his 2 ugly drops, he is such a mismatch and it’s a damn shame that Byron is clueless in involving him.

  33. Jeffbuc Says:

To make Evans doesn’t care is stupid. Did you not see when we were down 20 something when we hit dare on the dump off he was down field blocking multiple players. Players that don’t care would have just went through the motions. He dropped a deep ball and didn’t get in good position on the last throw. Other than that he caught everything against a corner who has had his number

  40. csidedave Says:

I understand that you are a frustrated fan but that is a ridiculous post. This is on Jason Licht who has drafted and signed a lot of players that previously successful coaches and coordinators have not been able to win with. Now after they join the Bucs, they are suddenly idiots??

All those high draft pick and not a sure star among them (maybe 1 but not sure after today). How can you have salary cap hell on a bad team? Look no further than Jason Licht and his most important pick, Jameis Winston who are 100% in charge of this mess.

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Straight garbage.

  45. The Mamba Says:

I’m sorry Joe, but the replacements on the offense line were much of the problem in my eyes. Also, have you ever coached football… or wait, better question, have you ever coached anything? Well, in this case I disagree with you. It’s not the coach, and I didn’t think it was a coaching problem when Dirk was there. It’s Jamies, and awful secondary that can barely cover someone for more than a sec or two. It’s pretty sad in my opinion that so many people want to blame the coach when there is a common denominator, that, in my opinion, is the problem. You can’t fix something that doesn’t understand how to be fixed or maybe in this case doesn’t want to be fixed. Sorry, but Jamies needs to be done in Tampa. Let’s give Ryan Griffin a shot…?

    Go Bucs!

If you haven’t figured out yet Licht isn’t competent enough to build a football team, you never will. If you still think Jameis is a franchise QB, you weren’t watching the last five years. We should of blown it up last year starting with Licht. Instead he talked the clueless Glazers into BA, and a new contract! We are bad from the top down. This season is over, it’s two weeks till Halloween. The only thing we can win this year is the NFC South basement title. That should be a gimme for this piss poor organization.

  66. Nick2 Says:

Disagee Joe this game has James all over it. What Jamie’s did today can not be blamed on anyone else Jameis handed that game to the Panthers. Knute Rockne couldn’t have coached us out of the spot Jameis put us in. Can we please see what Griffin can do? I believe this team could win more without JW and I’ve always supported him. 77. unbelievable Says:

He didn’t make the winning tackle actually, he got lucky af with a poor spot from the refs.

And he got beat all game long Before that.

VH3 is the worst starting cornerback in the league. Gives up the highest completion % in the league.

  78. Bosch Says:

Look at Arians’ resume. What has he done. Really? In particular look how his success declined over time.

  79. SJ_Bucsfan Says:

When it comes to the Bucs, “The more that things change the more they stay the same” I whay sould be painted all over 1 Buc place!

  80. cmurda Says:

@Unbelievable. VH3 did make the tackle and the spot was accurate. Let’s call it like it is. That said, VH3 is pure trash. He has no feel for the game and he gets beat on every play. Kyle looked at his receiver going against VH3 all day from the first snap and it was smart. VH3 is the weakest part of this weak secondary. It is what it is. We hoped for him to work out but he didn’t. Not picking Derwin James and Josh Allen were dumb mistakes by a GM that has set this franchise back. Arians inherited this team that lacks talent. Most of us knew it from the start. You can’t put it on the staff in their first year. Today was a poorly coached game but overall it’s the lack of talent assembled by Licht. He should be canned.

I was hoping Arians could fix Jameis but Jameis seem to be another B Bortles. I’ve been watching bucs football since 1976 and this losing is getting old. I think it Tom to move on from Winston

  84. Defense Rules Says:

The story of this game is TURNOVERS. The game was out-of-control right from the beginning primarily because the Bucs’ offense is awful. Winston fumbled TWICE (lost 1) & threw FIVE INTs; that’s ludicrous. And the 13 Passes Defensed by Carolina must be a record high, and says a LOT about play design, Jameis’ accuracy & receivers’ route running. Good old Bobo Wilson (who has no business returning punts) also fumbled TWICE (lost 1). Of course the Bucs’ OLine joined in the frivolity by allowing SEVEN sacks, TEN QB HITS & FIVE TFLs … great protection guys. Oh and mustn’t forget the 42 yds rushing, that really helped. THIS is the performance that we should expect from the NFL’s most expensive offense? Shameful.

Defense played hard the entire game I thought, and did exceptional in stopping the Panthers’ running game (29 carries for 59 yds is only 2 YPC). But they allowed way too many critical catches & only ended up with 2 PDs (as opposed to the Panthers who had 13 PDs?). QB play was the most obvious difference in this game … Jameis got our-played big-time by an undrafted FA. Far as I’m concerned, the ‘Jameis-Experiment’ is over. Time to look at Griffin and see if he can contribute anything to this charade.

  85. EA Says:

Well said Joe, oversized coaching staff , secondary is totally fixed , and a roster to compete. BA has to be held accountable, this is the same old bucs team we’ve seen the last five years.

  86. Chrispy Says:

Evans dropped two touchdowns and allowed 1 if not both interceptions. He looked drunk all game. Yes, Winston looked like a turnover machine, but when will TB Fans stop ignoring the fact that the Oline lets him get pressured and sacked nonstop? What do you think a new qb is going to do about needing to score at least 30 points a game (the bucs opponents average 30 because of abysmal defense) with minimal protection and receivers that continue to drop everything.

  87. lambchop Says:

You mean the elite Leftwich as a player isn’t hof coaching material?

I’m telling you right now, the Glazers are the problem. They don’t care if the team wins. They get a check no matter what. And please spare me the nonsense that they want to win. They don’t even know how to win. Their dad was a winner. He won. They’ve won nothing other than life’s lottery. In fact, I’m pretty sure you could argue that everything sports-related the kids have touched has turned to sh!t. Until you get an owner that understands winning and how to win, this franchise is done.

Does Licht have to go? Yep. He’s never won a thing.

  93. SappAttack Says:

it’s a long season. takes awhile to turn around a turd team. I havent lost confidence in BA or his staff yet. Winston? That’s another story. I’m done there.

  94. Darin Says:

My goodness i hope Arians isnt freaking out like you with 10 games to go. They sucked today. Badly coached and a bunch of not so smart players on this team. But its one game.

  95. stpetebucsfan Says:

Soooo…nobody is awarding any game balls to the OL. We get that. But the sacks were not ALL on them.

Some could perhaps be characterized as “coverage” sacks…others JW holding the ball too long trying to make a play…and perhaps others to poor game planning. It’s time to play to our talent.

All plays should be one (check targets) two (check targets) three get rid of the ball…either to a target or to the cheap seats. Take the deep shot very rarely. Give JW short QUICK passes to ME and Godwin and OJ…three large guys who could add some YAC.

  96. cmurda Says:

I know 813. You’re not wrong. The blitzes and front 4 (Nassib makes me want to puke) have not cut the mustard but there are a ton of throws against VH3 that are thrown in about 2 seconds. That’s on VH3. He gives up the inside position because he’s slow and concerned getting beat deep. Dude doesn’t have it man. I always liked VH3 but I just don’t see it. With that said, maybe he becomes the best nickel in the NFL. At a bare minimum, we need to see a different CB on the outside. Where’s Dean? Even Ryan Smith at this point? Either VH3 excels in the nickel or ba-bye

  97. Brandon Says:

Where are the “Just throw money at Shaq Barrett” people now? Dude has been invisible for two weeks. Shows how knee jerk and stupid our fan base is.

  98. Aceofaerospace Says:

Why has Griffin taken a roster spot all these years? Bench/cut/trade/deactivate/place on IR Winston. I don’t care which one. We will never ever be able to depend on him put together multiple good games. I guess he’s just too stupid or too stubborn. If Griffin can’t play either, then get rid of him to, but at least find out. This is just ignorant.

  99. Who Cares Says:

BS Joes. BA is not God. Even with all the other mistakes, this team would have won today if not for 5 interceptions and 1 turnover, all committed by one player. An average QB would have won this game. JW tries hard, runs around like a chicken with his head cut off and then wings it to the other team. He still runs right into sacks. It’s year 5.

LVD, Ungodly, the TEs, the STs, Gay, the RBs, the OL/DL line. Let JW go and watch. It will be another Steve Young debacle. He’s a HOFamer, BTW that the Bucs drafted!!!!

  104. REC3 Says:

    Mike Evans- $15,200,000
    Donovan Smith- $12,500,000

    Where’s the improvement?
    Run D is better
    Run game is better
Secondary about same, but there are injuries
OLine needs upgrades, we all know that, even with injuries

The constant in the stink category is QB- he even had the National Media fooled this week with his “Stats Magnificence” B.S.
    He’s a loser.

Time to clean house starting with licht, evaluation team and arians

Unfortunately you are absolutely correct about the the current coaching staff.Thy’re inability to makee any in game adjustments and I guess maybe lack of institutional control er wtf ever it is.I heard 3 different players say they were surprised to see the stinkin’ panthers blitz so often. The first thing i prepare for with 2 new players on the right side of the line is blitzing and obviously they didn’t think it would be an issue. They obviously didn’t listen to the coaches last week with their “soft” coverage or they’re soft mentally .We might not win another game.I wish that Leftwich would voluntarily give the play calling duties back to the qb whisperer so all the Fsu fans will stop making excuses about him. We’ve heard the same thing for 5 yrs.Put-up or shut-up or gtfoh stop holding this franchise back dude. The rest of team has played well enough to win way more than you have.35 year fan that gets sick when I see the same play and hear the same I can’t do that and win crap, but still do it at least once per game, and most of the times, multiple times.Tired of hearing and seeing the same thing but nothing ever amount to a wins. This is worst than the loss to bears back in the day in London.I’m on the ledge someone talk me off..lol on the last part sorry if someone is offended, but so am I.

  108. Greg Says:

What’s really sad is that the bucs aren’t even close to the worst teams in the NFL this season! NFL is a sh#t show this season, no competitive games, refereeing beyond pathetic. I’d be done with it except the lightning have not recovered from getting their asses handed to them in the playoffs last year, so can’t even count on them to take your mind off this crap…

  109. Pewter power Says:

Are you nuts, start over? You dont start over if you have howard, godwin, Evans, brate and rojo. You fire licht, fix the o line the corners and go all in on 2020 quarterback in the draft. You can keep barrett and jpp but bucs are basically preparing to dump highly productive jpp for winston a guy who never threw 5 picks as a rookie but after 5 years cant decide when to throw the ball away, take a sack or make the right throw nervermind how accurate the pass is.

  110. Buczilla Says:

With the 8th pick in the 2020 NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Jake Fromm, quarterback Georgia. Hurray! Another 5 year project that I’ll probably be to old to give a $h!t about in a couple of years.

  111. Wags Says:

Joe will come up with any reason for it not to be Jameis Winston’s fault. If the Glazer family can’t see Winston is horrible then they can’t see anything.
