“He Hasn’t Totally Fixed Him”

October 22nd, 2019

Still work to do.

Last week, Peter King of NBC Sports suggested there is a very real chance that America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston will return as the Bucs’ starting signal-caller next season.

It seems former NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck smells the same outcome.

Of course, for more than a week talk in NFL circles has been about Jameis’ International Embarrassment, his six turnovers including five interceptions against the Panthers. The guy with whom he will be forever linked, gimmicky Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota, was benched.

Did Jameis’ London Letdown kill his days with the Bucs? Not quite, explains Hasselbeck. The former NFL quarterback explains the difference between Jameis’ situation and Mariota’s in the BSPN video below.

Hasselbeck notes Bucco Bruce Arians has had progress working with Jameis but, “He hasn’t totally fixed him.”

Andy Dalton 2.0 will be back next year and the year after and probably one more year after that.

  2. Lamarcus Says:

Jamies Winston is the most interesting Qb ever. Fun as hell to watch.

Better NOT LET HIM GO. HE IS A TOP 5 QB. he just turns the ball over and keep us in games??? Weird a** player. Has stats with the elites and stats line turnovers worse than Bortles?? What???

He is the most hardest Qb to figure out and making grown men cry about it

  3. BucsBandit Says:

    ENOUGH ALREADY!

    Cut this guy loose.

How many years does this franchise have to suffer over the ineptitude of Jameis Winston’s poor play?

4+ years into the NFL and still has terrible footwork, reads defenses slowly, holds the ball to long. Suffers from accuracy issues at times, makes bad decisions by forcing throws he shouldn’t, turns the balls over and becomes a liability.

Fails to sustain drives and/or turns it over and doesn’t allow our Defense to get much rest. Also gives opponents a short field and crushes the momentum and confidence of our Defense which is struggling enough.

Get Winston and his underperforming-massive-salary-cap-hit position OFF the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Sorry, but this guy isn’t the answer at QB. For all the “Football IQ” and time he spends in this offseason, and time spent in the film room, the FACT remains… Jameis WInston has not really progressed, even under Arians.

We need a NEW DAY in TAMPA BAY and that’s moving on from the Jameis Winston Experiment.

  4. geno711 Says:

    Guy who needs fixing:
    Jameis Winston
    expected completion percentage of 59.2
    completion percentage 60.
    time to throw 2.74
    12 TD’s, 10 Int

    A guy who does not:
    Russell Wilson
    expected completion percentage of 60.4
    completion percentage 68.3
    time to throw 2.88
    15 TD’s, 1 Int

Russell Wilson 2nd in passer rating.
Jameis Winston 25th in passer rating.

As a Buc’s fan, can’t I wish for someone better instead of someone still to fix in year 5.

  5. Lamarcus Says:

And to fix JW is get a better team around him. Smart player and he knows his defense nis trash so he always need to make a play. Ppl acting like is he Sam Darnold

Here my issue. His turnovers comes trying to win instead of not being good enough like Like Falk or Case Keenum JW tries to make my Sunday a winning one. It just doesn’t work out sometimes

  6. Lamarcus Says:

Thanks JW for trying tho. I know rocket science is easier than carrying a Bucs franchise. So still good job trying.

  7. mike Says:

I’m with Lamarcus… need a better team around him for us to be good. A great qb can cover up holes on your roster. JW is never going to be that guy. You have to build him a great roster which will be tricky going forward but give him a great D, Great special teams, a great line and a great run game like the 2013 Raven and he can be great like Flacco was in 2013.

  8. 813bucboi Says:

    stick a folk in him!!!!….

    JW IS A BUST!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  9. Syl Says:

    He doesn’t need fixing.

  10. 813bucboi Says:

    A BETTER TEAM AROUND HIM?….LOL…

was the 2016 team better than this team?….because we went 9-7 that year….

you clowns got it wrong….the TEAM needs a better QB around them….

a great QB can cover up holes but not if he’s the biggest hole on the roster….

    JW is a bust….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  11. NPRSageBoy Says:

Just the thought of another few seasons with JayMiss still here scares the crap out of me.

  12. Jean Lafitte Says:

Was Mahomes #1 pick first round?

  13. Lamarcus Says:

    813

2016 players somehow played better for 5 games lol. Take the Vh3 shades off because just like him you are seeing things that are not there. JW is a bust lol.

We should of drafted Eli apple

  14. D-Rome Says:

Andy Dalton 2.0 will be back next year and the year after and probably one more year after that.

This is spot on and I’ve been saying this for a while. The Bengals signed Dalton because he flashed some ability and they were afraid to be patient. They’ve had buyers remorse ever since then as they have watched far better QBs get drafted and developed. There is no fixing Jameis and if the Bucs give him a big contract this team will have buyers remorse just like the Bengals. The NFL is changing in the sense that unless you have a Hall of Fame caliber QB it makes no sense to invest $120+ million dollars on a below average QB.

  15. LordCornelius Says:

He really is a weird QB. He typically has 2-4 melt downs per year that make up the majority of his turnovers, while playing clean ball in the other 12+ games.

2015 – 4 games with 10 INTs total, 12 other games with 5 INTs total
    2016 – 4 games with 11 INTs, 12 other games 7 INT total
2017 – 4 games with 10 INTs total, 12 other games with 1 INT total
2018 – 4 games with 10 INT total, 7 other games with 4 INT total
2019 – 2 games so far with 8 INT total, 4 other games with 2 INT total

2019 not looking great so far. But if history repeats then he’s not going to have many more INTs or melt downs.

It’s just annoying to have them in the first place. THat’s like 1/4 the season. Then another 1/4 of the season we typically get blown out on defense by 2nd quarter, and some of these coincide with the bad turnover days, but not so much in 2019. The 2 bad games are completely on him and his decision making

  16. Robert Says:

    you can’t fix stupid.

a backup ALWAYS outplays him. I’d say bench him, but I don’t mind when he gets KTFO….problem is he gets back up and hands the other team the ball. SMH

  17. Lamarcus Says:

Draft another Qb and he still have to overcome:

    Below average oline
    Absolutel terrible secondary
    Kicker missing 34 yarders
    Drop passes
    Overrated weapons….ME13 OJ Perriman
    No run game threat

  18. Lamarcus Says:

Aaron Rogers. Just look at him. He wasn’t winning a damn thing until he got his defense and rb this year.

Why can’t we built like that? Why have we become so dependant on the Qb position? Probably because we all know JW is are only hope and our best player.

  19. SchlomieBarmitzvahCircumScissorStein Says:

You can’t “fix” someone who refuses to adapt.

  20. DayOnePaul Says:

I must’ve missed it. Will somebody please tell me what Mike Edwards did that he was benched for the entirety of last weeks game and replaced with Andrew Adams, who was walking the streets a couple weeks before that?

  21. BucsBandit Says:

    Lamarcus,

    It’s really simple…

If we cut ties with Winston the difference in cap savings:

    – Let’s us sign the top free agent cornerback in the league after the season.

    – Let’s us sign one or two of the best O-Linemen in the league.

    – Let’s us upgrade other positions.

THAT is why you cut underperforming, inconsistent Jameis Winston.

    #TIMETOMOVEON

  22. 813bucboi Says:

    take your FSU/JW glasses off….

just like JW, you’re fumbling all over yourself….

    JW IS A BUST!!!!

    We shouldve traded down….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  23. 813bucboi Says:

    Lamarcus

interesting is the best way you can describe JW?…LOL…

i rather have a consistent QB vs an interesting QB….lol…

    JW is a bust….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  24. Bird Says:

    Lamarcus

Aaron Rodgers Thru 25 tds to 2 Ints last year with 6-9-1 record.
He had no receivers and their running back was a converted receiver.
And they had injuries on their oline.

Pretty sure if he has Bucs tight ends and receivers that record would change

If Jameis thru 25 tds to 2 INTs , the Bucs would have a chance at playoffs last year. Remember how many 1 score games they lost last year . Pretty sure turnovers factored in there. But we don’t count turnovers when it comes to Jameis.

And it’s so funny that people still compare jaMeis to Rodgers
Last game – Jameis had 6 turnovers
Last game – Rodgers had 6 tds. 5 throwing and 1 rushing.

  25. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Aaron Rodgers was hurt

  26. Jaywill Says:

BucsBandit doesnt know what he is talking about. Before this year Winston has been top 3 in on 3rd down & getting 1st downs in his career. The problem wasn’t moving the ball it was turnovers. This year they can’t move the ball and still have turnovers. Half his picks are on other things besides Winston. You at like Winston lost to scrub dlines 49ers, Saints& Panthers have great defenses. His other loss was not on him.

  27. NO FEAR... Says:

I WOULD TRADE WINSTON FOR MARIOTA ANYDAY , MARIOTA SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN A BUC’S UNIFORM TO START WITH , THATS WHATS WRONG HERE !!! LAST YEAR FOR WINSTON, HE IS WASHED UP , IF THERE IS NO PROGRESS IN 5 YEARS DUMP HIM OFF !!!TRADE FOR MARIOTA THEN WE WILL START WINNING !!!

  28. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Sisyphus was a cruel Greek king who was punished to push a large rock up on a steep hill, only to find it rolling back on nearing the top. Ever since, he has been known for pushing the rock tirelessly till eternity

  29. Lamarcus Says:

    Bucsbandit

JW is a beast of a QB. I compare him to Roesthlisberger turnovers are gonna happen. Risk takers. But this is the soft age. We don’t need your feelings hurt so let’s get a check down artist

  30. Lamarcus Says:

On terms of raw talent. JW is a top 5 QB. He is too good just let go

  31. lambchop Says:

Sometimes a new situation for both parties is mutually beneficial.

Nobody can sit here today and say for sure what’s going to happen with Jameis. He is truly expendable if he has more gaffs with turnover ball and makes the same mistakes over and over. I mean, if that happens, the writing’s on the wall. A QB is supposed to elevate players around him. He isn’t that kind of guy. In fact, HE has been made to look better with our WRs huge frames and catch radius many times.

His biggest problem is that he is consistently inconsistent. You can’t win with that and it’s deceptively tempting to let the bloodletting continue, but it sure doesn’t feel good.

  32. ben Says:

No Fear ,, i agree because Mariota has had how many different head coaches and like 4 different offense coordinators .. He never had the stability that Winston was given and Winston has better receivers…. Just a thought:>))

  33. lambchop Says:

    @Lamarcus,

You sound like someone who’s happy with lowered expectations. I get it, this team has sucked for a long time. But, it’s time to hold people accountable.

He’s top 5 talent-wise, but he’s also a turnover machine. Wins are the only thing that matter and just because the defense sucks doesn’t give the #1 pick in his 5th year a scapegoat.

The point is to get better. If other players can be replaced to improve the team, why not the QB? At least the Bucs need to make an attempt to salvage the fans they have left and make it look like they give a $hit by trying to get better at the QB position.

We have tried EVERYTHING to put Jameis around the same OC/HC for his growth, brought in a QB whisperer with an ARMY of staff around to help him grow. It’s time the dividends start coming in or time to cut the losses.

The Board of Executives of WeWork are offering their Ex-CEO 200 Mlll to take a hike and never to look back. That’s called having a brass pair that hang low and heavy. They know what it takes to move on and to make things right.

  34. Marine Buc Says:

Teams that hide and mix up pass coverage schemes well really seem to confuse Winston. Some games he is unable to see the coverage, analyze it and make the proper throw. That is why he is so inconsistent. Winston can’t read most NFL defenses very well and most passes are just hopeful and lucky to find the proper target.

  35. zzbuc Says:

Lamarcus…How dare you saying ME13 is overrated……..!!!!Is abolutely nonsense, way beyond ridiculous…..!!!
    Overdose kills men!!!!!

  36. Pewter power Says:

The more fans talk about winston the dumber they get. Duh he hasn’t totally fixed him yet. It’s not his game it’s his mind that needs fixing, he doesnt see the field well and a lot of bad things happen. Because he see it late or just doesnt see the defense at all including presnap issues. Saying he is what he is at this age is ignorant and it will take more than 6 games to improve sorry you all dont feel like waiting

Having said that if they move on all of you idiots saying just cut him are the ones who better not say a word about the next quarterback since you think it’s so easy for a rookie to come in and fix the offense so and defense. Winston was responsible for the first and last L but what’s the excuse for the other two games. If not for shaq barrett he would have lost the rams game too.

  37. Lamarcus Says:

Simple:. Put a good team around JW and it will eliminate the “superhero” antics which means less turnovers.

Why can’t yall understand this very issue?

  38. Buccfan37 Says:

Winston is a perfect fit for the enduring Bucs miserable history. 5 years can stretch into 10 years of laughable production with this clown car overall team management.

  39. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

At lease Hasselbeck used the correct terminology. SMELLS. a.k.a REEKS

  40. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I know the Mariota fanboys are some of the JW haters posting now. NoFear with quite possibly the dumbest post of the year. Mariota has had a better team around him then Jameis and is being benched for a guy the Dolphins gave up on. He was a gimmick QB coming in and it was never a question as to whether he would fail or not, the only question was when. You can use some reasons for saying Jameis should be gone, but when you suggest he be replaced by Mariota it proves you are clueless about football or have simply never watched the Titans play.

  41. Athlete Says:

Your offensive line dictates how well your Quarterback and offense does. Case and point are the Chiefs. Alex smith took them to playoffs the year before Mahomes did. Does that mean Alex Smith is as good as Mahomes. We can all agree no but what it does show is how good the line was/is. Look what happened last week with Jets and Cowboys. No pressure on QB Darnold, Cowboys lose. Last night, pressure on Darnold turned him into a horror. So the moral of the story is pressure and how much can the offensive line keep off of the QB. Really simple stuff.

  42. #1bucsfan Says:

Winston has all the tools to be great. There are stats to prove it. It’s the mental game he needs help with. Yes that can be fixed. If BA had Winston an developed him from his rookie year you would see a diff Winston or not see him at all. BA is the mental toughness this QB an whole team needs. It will just take some time an some learning to get him there. I say keep Winston but still draft his replacement that’s our best bet. All you microwave people who just wanna pop things in the nuker an get instant results is foolish yes he’s had 5 years to be developed but he wasn’t developed the right way which for Winston is he needs to be mentally developed not physically

  43. JimmyJack Says:

Hey boys let’s not forget there’s still plenty of football right in front of us. And Winston’s getting the ball and if he can get us the next 2 and back to .500 we will all be singing a different tune…….If fools around and tears off 6 in a row to get us to 8-4……..I don’t know about y’all but I’ll be dancing in the streets.

We have all witnessed Jamies’ career first hand. But let’s not forget Bruce haven’t even been here half a season still. All the bad memories we got with Winston mean nothing to this coaching staff. There only concern is getting him to run this offense. They know what they want and need from him……And they’ll know after a full year if he’s good enough or not. This coach knows what a NFL QB looks like. I’m confident hell do the right thing……….But you can’t give him just six games. That just aren’t fair. Give it a entire season first.

  44. JimmyJack Says:

How bout think it like this? Say Winston in the second half of season plays real good football and that half doesnt resemble what we’ve seen so far? Are we then going to acknowledge that Winston is mastering the offense and becoming better player or are we going to stand by calling for his head after 6 games?

And no need to answer. You know you change your mind if this team starts winning.

  45. jmarkbuc Says:

    Lamarcus and Mike

Let’s say you’re exactly right. And if you are, JW still has to go. Like Bandit said, we have to cut ties so we can buy other parts.

Paying JW big money to do what any 4th round or Journeyman QB can do will put us even deeper in a hole..and we’re already F’n deep.

We get a star QB when we are ready for one. If JW was Mahomes, that would be one thing. He is what he is.

  46. Smashsquatch Says:

He’s been consistently inconsistent for five years. Bring him back if you want more of the same. Sameis Jameis

  47. JimmyJack Says:

    Jmark? Huh, what?

You said “we get a star QB when we are ready for one”? Care to clarify?

So what? To you don’t want a star QB? Not right now? I’m so confused……Anyways I want a star QB now. Right now if possible.

We played San Fran and had a chanse for last possession winning drive. I want my star QB to lead us to victory…….And last week I wanted a star QB in the place of Winston when he made them fumbles…….We get a star QB to get points instead of lose them there and that game goes down to the wire……And when it does go down to the wire I want a star QB.

  48. Pete I Says:

    Lets keep Jameis!

    The NFC South approves!

  49. AllhailJPP Says:

They keep feeding us sh*t sandwiches…..and expect us to keep rooting for this team…. yay more BS from the “experts”

  50. Rayjay1122 Says:

The Bucs will do whatever it takes to guarantee continued losing. I am totally confident in them making the wrong decision with personnel.

  51. DalvinCookRules Says:

Getting rid of Winston does not turn this franchise into a winner overnight. People need to understand and accept that fact.

Even if you find the next Mahommes or D. Watson (and with Licht at the helm, good luck with that) you will need a better OL at the minimum to keep the QB from getting killed. Im not saying Winston is the long-term solution, but we need to focus on the missing pieces first.

  52. gotbbucs Says:

If you cant see the pattern then you’re blind.

In the beginning of each season when teams are really jockeying for position Winston gets burned to the ground, then miraculously halfway through the year when the good teams are trying to stay healthy for a postseason push Winston sneaks in some good games, just enough to get people to think he can be what everybody wants him to be. Then we get to about week 14-16 when the Bucs playoff hopes are out the window but other teams are fighting for a wildcard spot and Winston will lay one or two more eggs on the field. Then low and behold, week 17 and we’re playing a team that has locked up a playoff spot and resting key players, and what does Mr. Winston do? Pulls a meaningless win out of his a$$, makes all the Homer’s think he’s the real deal, and knocks the Bucs out of draft position for a true difference maker.

Almost every single year for the last five years.

Somebody tell me how this streak will be broken? He isnt good enough to beat the best when the best is at full strength. Good teams and good coaches know the book on him and can get him to do what they want him to do based on pre snap reads.

He might have been smart enough to get accepted into Stanford, but he isnt smart enough to know how to get out of his own way.

  53. BucsBandit Says:

I often wonder if the Winston-Homers on this site actually watch the games.

Winston lovers on here are the Flat Earthers of the NFL. Like Lamarcus, they’ve somehow convinced themselves that Winston is amazing, despite every other NFL analyst and expert (people that do it for a living) saying the opposite.

  54. Capt. Tim Says:

Whoa! They better bring Winston back.
As a Buc fan, who has watched them since the first season,
One thing is True. Bucs have great defenses, and crappy offenses.
This Offense could be franchise changing!
Fitz gave us a glimpse of how good this offense should be- last year.
And that isnt what we want!! We want hard hitting defense, and lame offense!
With Jameis- we’ve got the “lame offense” covered.
Now,if we could just get the hard hitting defense- tradition would be preserved!

  55. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

@GotBucs – Do you even follow the Bucs. Many of Winston’s best games are right out of the gate. Was the Rams game where he had one of the best games of his career late in the season? Playoff teams typically don’t take the foot off the pedal until week 17 if at all. Man oh man this fan base is so dumb!

  56. Wesley Says:

    I’m soooo over this season.

  57. Dapostman Says:

If the OL plays the rest of the season like they did against the Rams then an 8-8 record or better would be within reach. If they play like the last two games then it will be a very long season. If you watch the two pockets from the last Panthers game you can see one QB having a clean one and one QB having to constantly maneuver through his. It ain’t rocket science. Pass blocker better. Run block better. The offense will be better.

  58. gotbbucs Says:

    @TouchDownTampaBay

To be honest, no, I’m not much of a fan anymore. In the last decade I’ve let this team ruin way too many of my Sunday nights, and sadly it ends up turning me into a dick to my family for the remainder of the weekend. I refuse to do that anymore.

I long to be able to consistently watch this team again, but I refuse to force my boys to endure watching this neverending pile of horse sh!t that this team fields every year.

I’m not sure of much anymore, but I am sure that this guy doesn’t have what it takes between the ears to week in and week out play smart football.

I’m an educated football fan that has been completely burned out by his team and wants them to make smart moves to get beyond this garbage. The smartest move is to admit that this guy isnt what everybody thought he was and move on.

  59. mike10 Says:

    Devil’s Advocate:

Is 1 year (and to this point, 6 weeks) enough time for Arians to fix Jameis?

  60. Dom>Licht Says:

Keep Winston at 30 mill next year and we have no cap space to improve team. Let him leave and we have cap space but J Licht is still running the show. Either way we are a 5 win team again next year!

  61. Jim Says:

Well, Bruce said the Secondary is “totally fixed”; guess in a little bit Jameis will be “totally fixed” too. Oh happy day!

  62. SteveK Says:

    Lord Corn,

Heckuva post! Thanks for laying that out so eloquently. It is the Jekyll and Hyde component of Winston’s game they is so maddening.

    I don’t understand it. When he’s on, he’s on! When he’s bad, he’s sh!tshow bad.

I fear that we could not win a championship if we can’t string together at least 3, maybe 4, consecutive playoff wins in a row. I don’t believe Jameis can do that, but will cont Be to rock my Jameis jersey and hope for the best possible outcome: a win on Sundays.

I fear that the rest of our team is not good enough to consistently overcome a 25% chance that Jameis has a clunker of a game. It’s hard enough to win in this league, and I believe the team would find better results from consistent QB play. I don’t need Superman, as Arians put it, but just be consistently cool, calm and collected to relieve the ball on time and where it needs to be.

I hope Jameis has ahold game this weekend. I fear for one Joe if bad Jameis shows up and we get our butts kicked. But we will score a lot of points while doing it! Gotta make those “L’s” shiny!😉

  63. TexBuc Says:

10 games left for the season and I look forward to each one.

    Go Bucs!

  64. Lamarcus Says:

    Bucsbandit

I don’t care what anyone says. I have eyes and don’t need stats to tell me what happened in a football game.

Football teams need to be from saftey on down last to the Qb you create a great environment for success.

  65. Troy Says:

One thing I find interesting is the assumption that Winston can be fixed. What exactly makes people think he’s ‘fixable’? His playing history? His ‘flashes’ of greatness? The coaching he’s recived? If I look at all of this, it tends to make me think he’s not fixable.

  66. T REX Says:

    I think I hear Nancy Kerrigan screaming…wwwwhhhhyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!

Please stop it. Nothing to see here. Move along.

  67. July Joe Says:

    Well duh.

Anyone that isn’t an IDIOT knows what Tim said is true.

Arians still loves Jameis and I’ll be shocked if Jameis isn’t starting in Tampa in 2020, especially as NONE of the QBs that will be in the draft are even close to as talented as Winston is.

As for Mariota; he’s afraid to throw to anyone that is even remotely covered and takes forever to read coverages. He’s just a bad QB. However, if the Titans don’t trade him and get something, even a 5th or 6th round pick, that’s just dumb, as they should get whatever they can before they kick him to the curb.

  68. T REX Says:

JJ, Winston is a loser and won’t be here next year. As dumb as the Glazers are football wise…they know trying to sell that loser Jameis to the fans is a lost cause. Say your good byes buddy. Grab your tissues.
