Godwin: Lay Off Jameis

October 31st, 2019

Stands up for America.

Some folks think Bucco Bruce Arians was covering for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, after Jameis threw two more picks Sunday in a one-score loss.

So Joe decided to ask receiver Chris Godwin, one of the biggest stand-up guys on the roster, if the Bucs struggles were that the team was still learning Arians’ offense. Godwin disagreed and then without prompting from Joe, offered up a defense of Jameis himself.

“I don’t think so,” Godwin replied to Joe when asked if the offensive players still haven’t gotten Arians’ offense down.

“Really, all it comes down to is; one, being on the same page; and two, it’s guys executing. Like Sunday, Coach Arians was talking about. He was absolutely correct. Those are mistakes that we haven’t made in the past and we shouldn’t be making them. And that is on us.”

Then Godwin quickly came out defending his quarterback.

“People are always quick to blame the quarterback and it is not always the quarterback’s fault,” Godwin said. “In that case [Sunday], it wasn’t. We just have to be better.”

Godwin emphasized the word “We.”

Regarding the outraged fans who have their pitchforks out and pointed at Jameis, he was asked about the outcry yesterday. Jameis shrugged it off, saying it was “outside noise” and that he had to concern himself with what is going on within the walls of One Buc Palace and prepare for the Seahawks.

    Stop making sense!

  2. BrianBucs Says:

Godwin is correct, everybody on offense needs to play better.
Maybe Godwin will become that leader on offense that Arians is looking for. At least they know he will be here next year.

  3. Bucnjim Says:

Probably going to get a politically correct answer from anyone currently on this team. Lets hunt down a few receivers who played for the Super Bowl team or played in the playoffs in the early 2000’s and get their opinion of Winston. Doubt if you get that Sugar Coating.

  4. ou812 Says:

“We”!!! What I read was in THAT case . Then how do you explain the other 90 ints.
    Bye Felicia

  5. Hodad Says:

Green Bay has a new offense with a first time HC, and they don’t seem to be having a problem. They also have a real pro bowl QB, not America’s relief pitcher toilet bowler Jameis Winston.

  6. ou812 Says:

Still nothing on the Winston/ Licht burner account???

See Bucs fans are wrong 99 percent of the time

  9. tmaxcon Says:

This circus is hilarious you can always count on the excuses, drama and BS being more entertaining than the on field product every year… when you have owners who have zero intentions of fielding a respectable product it truly does not matter who is gm, coaches or players….. there is no leadership in the entire organization from owners to janitors there is no leadership period….. you can’t be this bad for this long without trying really hard to be this bad…. bucs are a small market irrelevant classless franchise void of leadership….. until the results change that statement is 100% accurate reflection on this crap franchise

  10. Pete I Says:

    Good for Godwin!

    Jameis is still a problem!

Even if everyone was to “lay off” Jameis ” meaningless stats” Winston he would still implode very 3rd game or so as it is in his nature.

  11. Hoopstar82 Says:

James will be here next year let’s stop debating about it

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Why am I getting the sneaky suspicion that we will sign Winston to a 1 or 2 year cheap deal…..
Starting to look like that to me….

  13. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

When is it ever his JW’s fault? Thats why we haven’t been to the playoff in years because we keep making excuses.

  14. ClodHopper Says:

Of course they’re not ALL on Jameis. Can we just all agree to that right now? It’s the most obvious thing in the world. We get it! That goes for every QB in the history of the world too.

But if the QB with the most turnovers in his era is a good QB and they’re not his fault, the only answer should be to replace every player on offense except Jameis. Does anyone expect Jameis to be better without Evans and Godwin out there?

  15. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

Did we really expect him to say anything different I mean seriously.

  16. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

“…Godwin is correct, everybody on offense needs to play better…”

That is on the money! If you watched the game, there were soooo many dropped passes that were on target. Look at the stats (catch the darn pass Brate, Perriman, etc)!

@Hodad: Green Bay started the season very slow on offense. Their defense was surprisingly great.

The Bucs offensive play calling has been offensive. I am not one buying into the lack of production from OJ Howard as being due to the poor blocking from our Oline. In a previous post, Joe said Dare is being used more because the coaches “trust him”. That is usually very true in coaching decisions – coaches go with players out of “trust”. Still, Dare over RoJo? Really?

And why does Lefty have more “trust” in having Perriman and Dare on the 5 yard line with goal to go, than Howard and Brate (with ME & Godwin)?! Perriman>OJ or Brate?! Give me the lineup at the 5 yard line with ME, Godwin, Brate & OJ any day.

Although you have a point, I am not buying the “trust” factor Joe; I’m going with the “stupid” factor with Lefty

  17. Reach87 Says:

#3 is not perfect. However, #3 is not the problem with this team (TEAM). This is not golf or tennis. This is a team sport. We can and will play better as a team, this year. Fake fans (define it how you like) please continue to self-identify.

    Go Bucs!

  18. Bird Says:

“its not always the quarterbacks fault”…true….but FAR too often it is and when it is it is a TURNOVER….MoveOn.Bucs !

  20. SteveK Says:

So tired of the mental gymnastics performed to claim 3 is good. He’s not. Regardless of fault or not, QBs across the league are better st protecting the ball than Winston. Do other QBs have guys run the wrong route?

This is tired. Jameis doesn’t win, holds the ball too long, and turns the ball over more than ANYONE since 2015. I can’t stomach the idea of the Glazers paying Jameis to be a less than average QB. Draft a friggin rookie, pay them like a rookie, and try again. Even bring in a journeyman.

We can’t keep propping this guy up as a franchise ab. He doesn’t win games and he turns the ball over more than Eli, Bortles, and EVERYONE since 2015.

Enough is a enough. Can’t do this sh!tshow of poor play, and ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY.

joe likes the Raheem quote “I will tolerate you until I can replace you”, and pouts out “points scored”

What about the losing, losing and more losing. Oh and all the friggin turnovers. The one guy who touches the ball on every offensive play can’t consistently orchestrate a successful/efficient offense. That’s it. Period.

  21. T REX Says:

    LEAVE JAMEIS ALONE! WAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!

This team is soft. Need a total house cleaning. WInston and a lot of players are broken. It was a mistake bringing Arians in here. We need a culture change. Winston has been a part of too much losing.

    It’s time.

  22. tmaxcon Says:

    Tbbf

Jameis would be an absolute fool to resign with this cesspool of an organization with no hope…. jameis will have plenty of options he wont be forced to accept an offer from the worst franchise in sports.. . His agent could be sued for malpractice if he allows or recommends jameis return to this small market laughingstock…. you do realize Tampa is the least desirable option in the entire NFL….

  23. ou812 Says:

Maybe when jameis leaves for greener pastures you will finally get one of your worthless comp picks you are so fascinated with.

  25. Sharthappens Says:

I would say the same thing if I was him. He knows The retard will fill up his stat sheet due to his turnovers and the need to play catch up and pass the ball. Better stats = better payday after the rookie contract is over.

  26. T REX Says:

tmaxiepad: You’re the least desirable person in the entire gene pool. Go cry somewhere else loser.

  27. Go Bucs 72 Says:

Of course Jameis needs to reduce the turnovers, duh. If you don’t see the obvious talent that he is it’s due to one of three reasons. You are stupid, a troll, or a Gaytors fan.(more than likely all three). Perriman could not catch a cold if he was naked and wet standing on The North Pole.

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Jameis will receive offers for backup only……a renewal (even cheap) would give him his only starting opportunity……I think if he’s offered any reasonable extension….$15 mil or more…..he’d accept.
    Now….do I know this for a fact….of course not….it is an opinion….just like everyone else’s…….

  29. Armybucsfan Says:

No Jameis isn’t the only problem but when he throws more interceptions than touchdowns in a single game no team not even the god damn patriots could come back from that !!!! Now self identify that Reach87

  30. tmaxcon Says:

    Tbhf

Other franchises have zero respect for bucs organization they dont hold players accountable for mistakes while playing for this minor league franchise…. jameis will be starting qb for a decade or more…. dont worry you will be still making excuses for this minor league franchise and worrying about comp picks too….

  34. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

Interesting JW said “outside noise” when everyone is calling him a bust.

Wonder what he thought “the noise” was after the Rams game?

After a win, this team loves to read it’s own press clippings and bask in that instead of working it’s ass off for the next game….which they always lose in some historic fashion because they are still glowing from reading how good they were in a rare win.

  35. ou812 Says:

Now it all makes sense! Tmaxcon is Jameis Winston!!! Fake Bucs accounts jameis 1 of 1 look it up.

  36. ou812 Says:

I accused Tmaxcon of being Jameis Winston and my comment is awaiting Moderation. More clues ??? HEY why not the gm is all over social media as a troll @jameis 1 of 1.

It’s nice that Godwin spoke up for his QB. Was that not expected? He didn’t exactly go over the top in his defense but I Godwin is not a loquacious kind of guy…probably more reflective of his style than his feelings.

Meanwhile…it’s time to do the exact OPPOSITE of laying of JW!!!
That’s been going on for his entire freaking career until last year’s benching.

This year we’re so worried about JW’s fragile ego and confidence that we purposely did not sign any QB who MIGHT even compete with JW.

It’s time for JW to simply man up and say it is what it is! Pretty much I think JW has done this…it’s his supporters who seem to have difficulty facing the reality of the results.

  45. Mort Says:

Evans and Perriman need to catch the damn ball and we win that game. Full stop. Matt Gay needs to make a short ass field goal and we win the giants game. Jameis looks a lot better with a 4-3 record, doesn’t he.

  46. Pewter power Says:

Apparently we have a lot of people that claim to be fans only if we make moves they think we should. I’m praying that all of you fake fans jump ship and move on if they dont draft a quarterback like you want or fire Jason licht. We are all just sick of you honestly. Dont know how you can know more than the guys playing for the bucs because you watch the game doesnt mean you know who’s to blame for what. Just stop watching already, move on and root for another team and you wont have to be here b!tching every week.

Dumb … Green Bay has a win mentality. Bucs don’t. If you compare the roster. Bucs have a better team in paper.

It’s not about the QB or coach. It’s about the team.

  48. SteveK Says:

The QB is set up to be the most impactful position on the field. Not a liability, and not below average. Especially not inconsistent.

  49. Hodad Says:

Tmax, the only place Jameis is going is to a baseball farm league. If another NFL team takes a flier on him it will be as a back up. You seem like a smart guy when it comes to the rest of this roster. Don’t understand what you see in Mr. Magoo.

  52. lambchop Says:

    Tmaxi,

Why do you rail on the owners? Did you enjoy the Culverhouse years more? The Glazers spend money and get the heck out of the way. It’s just unfortunate that we have had some really bad hires as well as been stood up at the alter (Tuna). But, you can’t fault them for not trying. It’s just that they don’t have football IQ like most owners. Then you have the opposite spectrum in Jerruh Jones. Meddlesome brat who thinks he knows it all.

Maybe we’ll get some luck come our way eventually. We can hope.

And anyone who begs for the Glazers to sell the team, there’s no guarantee the new owners don’t move the team somewhere else.

Most of you guys are absolute clowns how about you give a coach more than seven games to put his culture in place, Get his players in, and put his stamp on a team. You guys sound like all you do is sit at home and play video games or live in your mom’s basement. Arians has basically had success everywhere but not every situation is the same. I would type more but to what end, INSANITY! Grow up

  57. Sleepy903 Says:

JW isnt Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady we get it. He isnt even in the second tier of QB’s. He is probably average even with poor development. Somewhere between 15-20 range.

The problem is the offense. When the offense is clicking and everyone is doing their job they put together performances like in LA. When we have linemen getting penalties and getting beat every few plays. WR and TE dropping passes, RB’s whiffing in protection you as a player start over compensating for your teammates you expect something bad to happen. You lose your focus and concentration. Instead of focusing on your job for that play you’re thinking what else is going to go wrong then its you who make the mistake. It happens all the time.

Mike has given up on some routes this year probably because he either wasn’t expecting the ball or thought JW got sacked all ready. Godwin has run some routes to incorrect depths either trying to break the route to allow JW to get it out of his hands early based on the O-line play or he saw a key in the defense and JW thought the original route would still work. O linemen false starting to get a jump on the D-line, some holding hoping to not get JW hit. JW clock speeding up because of pressure. JW seeing passing based on timing compared to allowing the WR to get open due to the pressure he faces.

Instead of doing their individual jobs they are either overcompensating or they aren’t focus because they are waiting for the next bad thing to happen.

  58. westernbuc Says:

We’ve been hearing this for years. It’s typical of the Bucs. It’s not all Jameis’s fault, but he’s not playing well enough for an extension either

  59. Robert Says:

Godwin is going to get PAID because of JW. of course he’s going to be nice, and he should. still doesn’t excuse the fact that JW only uses 1-2 Godwin or ME, whichever isn’t blanketed in all the games)

there’s other weapons, JW just can’t get past read #2

  64. Ndog Says:

What I find funny is all of these people clearly see mental errors all over this team game after game, month after month,, year after year yet they think when it comes to Jameis they believe none of those mistakes impact the QB position or TOs. It just further illustrates how football stupid most of these people are. Yes the QB makes mistakes as well but many of his TOs are also tied to the wires of others. Believe it if you want or not but when this team quits making stupid mistakes all over the field then I will start putting ALL of the blame on the QB. Until then it is a team problem that just cannot seem to get fixed. And for those of you that don’t understand the things that adversely effects the QB are listed below. Please read all of these and then come state that these things are not happening weekly on this team.

    Missed blitz pickup
Slide protection going the wrong way
A RB picking the wrong Blitzer
A RB using poor technique thus getting blown up and causing extremely quick pressure.
A WR runs a route to short
A WR runs a route to long
A WR breaks in vs breaking out
A WR breaks out vs breaking in
A WR misses a check and doesn’t run the correct route
    A bad snap
    A dropped pass
A tipped pass by a WR, TE, RB, causing TOs
A horrible decision on a KO/Punt return putting the QB in his own endzone to start a drive
Poor technique on a running play causing a loss of yard and predictable play calling

  65. tmaxcon Says:

    Pewter power

  70. Sirclicksalot Says:

Since this is a Jameis good or bad debate now, I’ve got to say Jameis is still developing. He’s only 25 folks. That’s no excuse for the turnovers, but it is reason to think he can be better. The mental development takes time and is correlated with age, not just time in the league. For all his faults, he is still better than half the other qbs in the league and has been the best qb of Tampa’s history. He averages over 260 yds and 1.6 tds a game along with 7.6 y/a. Those are tier 2 qb numbers. Aaron Rodgers didn’t even start his first game until he was 25. I wouldn’t compare those two directly, only pointing out to say it’s been a very unique development process and Jameis still has a full career ahead of him. Do ya’ll really want to play qb roulette again we already have on in the top half of the league? Do you have any recollection of the qb situation from 2004-2015? It could be A LOT worse.

What don’t you people understand about not every TO is not 100% the QBs fault?

I mean you people are flat ridiculous or just plain dumb. The head coach comes out and tells you the routes were run wrong, the WRs themselves tell you they run the wrong routes, the two fumbles were clearly not on the QB yet all anyone is talking about are Jameis and TO’s. New flash morons Jameis did not have any TOs this week that were his fault. So all we heard all off season was how couldn’t hit the deep ball yet he hit 2 perfectly on Sunday. We also heard Jameis makes bad decisions yet no bad decisions on Sunday. We also heard that he can’t bring his team back yet he brought us back to get the lead only to have the defense blow it again. So all this happens and yet still all you morons want to talk about is the QB. Complete idiots I tell ya IDIOTS!!!!!

  88. T REX Says:

ndog is like a chihuahua yapping at your feet.

Damn dude…you make me laugh EVERY day…EVERY day. I hope you and Winston have a beautiful life together.

  89. Edster Says:

He Said “it’s not always the quarterbacks fault”, true! In Winston’s case, it’s not ALWAYS his fault, just MOST of the time!!!! 4.5 years of Winston with different coaches and players around him and the same trash, yet it is always someone else’s fault. It’s like watching the same movie over and over again with new people who don’t know how it’s going to end but you do! And you sick of the ending! FACT! No quarterback has thrown more interceptions or fumbled the ball more than Winston! It doesn’t matter how much talent he has if he makes poor decisions, holds on to the ball, does not secure the ball, then it’s a mute point! Take an average QB that does not cough up the ball the way Winston does and this is easily a Post-Season team!! And don’t give me the O-Line bullcrap because if you watch the film, these guys are holding defense players back for extended periods of time while Jameis can’t figure out what he wants to do with the ball. I will add that play calling could be a lot better also. Our play calling of deep, low percentage passes aren’t doing Jameis any favors. When defenses blitz we should be going to quick screen passes. Arian’s No risk’it no biscuit obviously doesn’t work because we have been risking it like crazy and I have yet to see a biscuit!!!!

  90. Edster Says:

    Hey Ndog,

If we just give Winston 1 more year, some new players, he will be better next year! How many more decades are you willing to except mediocrity? Players and coaches come and go and the one consistent factor during our losing years has been Winston!!! Sure he has talent, so did Geraldina, where the f*** has the gotten us? I swear some of you fools love losing! Funny, we drop Geraldina and all of a sudden we have the #1 rank run defense!….hmmmm…..that is a coincidence too! lmao! Clowns!

MIND BLOWN! Fitting name considering your mind has clearly been blown away! Jaimes is the king of losing! Winston’s most iconic play was him falling back during the Rose bowl and throwing an interception! He looked like a clown and still does! Jason Licht should be run out of town and barred from the city for life!!!

Funny how all these teams are giving undrafted or late draft pick QB back-ups a chance and they are rocking it! Two of the leagues best QB’s right now where late draft picks in Tom Brady and Russel Wilson. Ryan Griffin had the most TD’s and passing yards during pre-season and unfortunately will never get a chance in Tampa because of his draft stock! That is clearly idiotic! Arian’s brags about how every position has competition and he will bench any player who is not performing but then says due to his loyalty, someone would have to order him to bench Winston??? WTF??? Arians is full of brown poop!!!

Excuses are like A-holes! Everyone has one and they all stink!

I love hearing the Winston apologists blame everything under the sun for Winston losing! I’m just waiting to hear them blame global warming for causing the football to have a higher trajectory coming out of Winston’s hand causing the interceptions! If the air was just a little cooler and heavier the ball would not float as much! LMAO!!!

Noles fans are like children in denial!! You give them facts and all they can say is “nuh uh” and shake their head!
