Coverage Or Pass Rush?

October 23rd, 2019

Pass defense chatter.

It is a good thing Joe has control. Otherwise, the drywall behind Joe’s big-screen HDTV would be pockmarked from projectiles launched at it after watching this gutless pass rush of the Bucs.

Of course, one could look at the ole’ secondary and throw up on their shoes.

So what is to blame for this worthless pass defense, worst in the league? Is it defensive backs who can’t cover a rock, or zero pass rush besides Shaq Barrett?

Yes, said Bucco Bruce Arians. Yesterday Arians explained both are culprits in the horrid pass defense.

“It’s two-fold,” Arians told the local pen and mic club. “It’s the coverage and the pass rush. Now that teams are doing a lot more max protection, we’ve got to do a better job of covering guys a little bit longer and be a little smarter, be a little more physical back there.”

Joe hopes Arians has the magic elixir for this secondary. For if this secondary doesn’t get repaired very, very soon, the Bucs will need to go out and find a corner.

With all of these corners drafted in the past two years, not one (other than Carlton Davis who starts) can make Vernon Hargreaves sweat over poor play? Not one can make a starter playing well below his draft status worry about being pulled off the field?

Joe was under the impression the reason for a coaching change was to bring in better coaches.

BA just described the guys they DID NOT draft.

“Better job of covering guys a little bit longer and be a little smarter, be a little more physical back there.”

  2. D-Rome Says:

The season is lost. They will not be going to the playoffs so it makes ZERO SENSE for the Bucs to trade for players by using future draft picks. It makes more sense to trade away players to acquire draft capital than the other way around.

Trading players is not smart and admits your GM is as awful as educated fans think

Remember when the secondary was “fixed”…

Ha ha ha ha ha ha too bad we got retired golf cart riding Arians and not bad ass offensive coordinator qb whisperer Arians

Or maybe he was just lucky to have Luck, Palmer, Manning and Rapistberger…

“lucky to have Luck, Palmer, Manning and Rapistberger…

All those QBs were better when BA left and stopped spitting in their ears”

Say Bruce..If you had a bad A.. Defensive Front 4, you wouldn’t need to blitz so much leaving your secondary exposed. Stevie Wonder can see that.

  6. LordCornelius Says:

If Jamies is done and none of these secondary players pan out and Licht keeps his job… I mean I don’t know of a GM that has ever been allowed to fail THAT much…

  7. JimmyJack Says:

Joe you sound very sure that Vernon is in no danger of losing his snaps. Are you ever sure if Vernon is starting on Sunday. It wouldn’t surprise me if Vernon don’t start Sunday.

Even if he does start I would hope they have a short leash on him and somebody prepared to step in. If they do start him he needs to get pulled if he struggles in the first series. Ryan Smith is legitimately a better player then VHIII in mine opinion. And maybe Dean could be better then both.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Joe was under the impression the reason for a coaching change was to bring in better coaches.” There isn’t a coach in the league who could do anything with VHIII, MJ Stewart, a couple of rookies & a couple of 1st year guys making up their Secondary. And especially when you have an almost non-existent pass rush.

But sure Joe, it’s the new coaches fault that JL drafted VHIII & MJ Stewart. It’s the coaches fault that Dean (and White) has been hurt most of this season & that Ryan Smith was suspended. And it’s obviously the coaches’ fault that we have no REAL veteran CBs or Safeties back there to provide field leadership. Good call.

Great coaching doesn’t really equate to winning at the NFL level. They are all grown men with more training at their craft than a medical doctor..

I’ll keep saying it: BA sold this fan base / ownership a “bill of goods” as a savior.

He can’t heal the sick, much less raise the dead.

    God help us!

“It is a good thing Joe has control. Otherwise, the drywall behind Joe’s big-screen HDTV would be pockmarked from projectiles launched….” , So you’re saying you’d be throwing on par with JW#3, okey dokey 😉

You guys do know this team is essentially gauging where it is and I think in the next week we will be tanking for draft picks honestly.

    “a little more physical?”

I’d be happy just to see one of our DBs even make contact with an opposing receiver, besides Davis and Whitehead.

  14. 813bucboi Says:

been saying for the pass few weeks that pass rush and secondary go hand in hand…lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  15. 813bucboi Says:

and like i said a couple days ago….

    JPP will improve our secondary….

now if teams double shaq, JPP will have 1on1 matches which he often wins….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. Jmarkbuc Says:

    DR

So let me get this straight…you’re on board with what BA is doing?

HC stands for head coach, where I come from…not head consultant.

BA reconstituted his failed coaching staff, and managed to get them all paychecks including Tom Moore.

This many coaches couldn’t be this inept, no matter what players they are working with.

“Joe hopes Arians has the magic elixir for this secondary.”

The secondary that is #TotallyFixed? BA did not have the ‘elixir’ then, and not sure he has it now. Years of bad drafting might have contributed… oh, yeah, BA & TB did the drafting this year.
