Changing History

October 4th, 2019

Can the roll continue?

Joe is a history guy. Proud of it. Yeah, someone can live in the past. But the savvy people learn from the past.

Look at recent history and America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, and the Bucs are sort of a perfect marriage.

Like the Bucs, Jameis struggles with consistency. And just like the team, when it appears Jameis has turned the corner — SPLAT!

The last 10 quarters of football, Jameis has been fantastic. But we’ve seen this tale before. It’s one of the great things about Jameis and the Bucs, and the most frustrating thing about Jameis and the Bucs.

Which Jameis, which Bucs will show up?

Former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms is fired up for the signs of life under Bucco Bruce Arians. And Simms is genuinely happy Jameis appears to have worked out his demons. But Simms knows Jameis’ past all too well and in his podcast, “Unbuttoned,” Simms said he is sort of waiting for the trap door to be sprung.

“This is what is crazy about Jameis Winston: History has told us that this week he will throw seven picks and we are all going to go, ‘What the hell is wrong with Jameis Winston?’ I hope that doesn’t happen.

“He has shown glimmers in the past. He had gone for three, four, five games in a row where he shows you this is why he was the No. 1 pick. He’s fearless in the pocket.”

But then, as Simms points out, SPLAT!

The Bucs have it in their power to change history Sunday. Play well. Jameis can either carry the team, or the team can sack up and cover for Jameis if he is struggling.

You know it and Joe knows it: If the Bucs fall again, just about every NFL follower will snicker and shrug with a smirk and say, “Same ol’ Bucs.”

For once can the Bucs take advantage of a backup quarterback and eat a W?

    couple things that are different:

this year he’s playing well very early in the season….last year he played well the last 4games of the season…..

the biggest difference of them all is better coaching…..

thats why we arent the, “Same ol’ Bucs.”

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  2. 74 Bucs fan Says:

I’d like to see comparison stats of JW and the rest of the QBs when comparing the last 6 games of ’18 and the first 4 of ’19. That’s 10 games – and JW had 1 bad game right? And that game happened to be with a brand new offense – with players apparently not running the right routes etc. Someone run the numbers and lets see how JW compares over the last 10 games.

  3. gilhealy Says:

Exactly, 74. And 813, good point, and spot on, as well.

  4. The Fighting Schiano’s Says:

    Let’s eat a W!!!!

  5. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

“Eat a W”…..kiss of death. Stop it.

  6. Buc1987 Says:

    Meanwhile…..back in August.

“We’ll see Winston benched again. I have zero doubt. Too many problems are being put on the previous instead of accountability. Lots of crow gonna be eaten on here.”

    Ben real Says:

“If arians won’t tolerate picks then I guess he better get ready to bench jameis because if he’s letting jameis gun sling it he’s gonna have more turnovers than any year he’s ever had.”

    Then back in July….

    “LOLZ.

I don’t think there’s ever been an NFL QB in history that has had more “excuses” or “do-overs” or “this year feels different” crap than Jameis Winston.

CUT WINSTON ALREADY. Let’s move on to the future.”

There’s a FULL archive of such lunacy. It’s going to be fun to pull more of it up throughout the season.

  7. Buc1987 Says:

Morgus…the archives are full of your goodies too!

  8. BucInCLE Says:

Did anyone else notice how long it seemed Russel Wilson held the ball last night? Just based on the eye test, it seems like Jameis has been making quick decisions, especially against the rams last week. It was just a little eye opening watching Wilson last night against the Rams defense seemingly hold on to the ball a lot longer than Jameis did last week.

  9. 74 Bucs fan Says:

You know what I really like about this Team? Go watch the Rams game with about 12:30 left in the 4th right after our interception. On our sidelines, the Rams receive shoves our DB – and then a mass of Bucs rush up to defend our guy. Vita Vea walks right up to the Rams receiver – flexes his muscles and gives the guy a crazy a$$ death stare! Don’t mess with our family!

Also – we ran a screen to OJ Howard. Have we ever run a TE screen before?

Diversity – and that isn’t an old wooden ship.

  10. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

    Buc1987 u got me lmmfao bro 🤷‍♂️😂😂😂😂
Cant wait to see more of that

  11. D1 Says:

    BucinCle,

You’re right about about both. RW is and has been right at the bottom on time to throw. But it’s built in to their passing game, so yes He holds the ball longer than most but it’s by design.

Winston has definitely gotten rid of the ball faster this year. Part is there’s a lot of routes 5yds or less. The other is protection. I’m sure there’s more but I am just glad He’s getting rid of the ball faster.

  12. Tye Says:

Watching the Rams last night, The Bucs win seems less impressive.. I know the Seahawks are suppose to be a competitive team, I’m just saying the Rams aren’t last years Rams so was Bucs win an illusion… Any given Sunday… Did the Rams just have one of those bad games that the Bucs just happen to benefit from?
As its well established in many games, JW tried to give the game away with a pick at the end to give them a chance to snatch the win from them but as other teams turned that into a win, the Rams misfortunes was unable to finish..

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Joe, you tickle me. Let’s look at RECENT history? Jameis’ biggest problem is lack of consistency. RECENT history has far too often proven to be a myth in his case. Soon as folks get comfortable with Good Jameis, then SPLAT … Bad Jameis poops all over the bed. How many times have we seen that show come to town now?

Great players are great because they’re CONSISTENT over a career. No one hopes more than I do that Jameis has turned a corner this year under BA’s tutelage. But Jameis is not the type to carry a team. He NEEDS receivers like ME13, Godwin, OJ & Cam. He NEEDS a very good OLine to buy him time. He NEEDS a respectable running game to keep defenses honest. And more than anything, he NEEDS quality coaching to keep him focused & on-track. Take away any of those & there’s a decent chance that Bad Jameis will light up our lives once more, and not in a good way.

But for right now at least, let’s all just keep HOPING that Good Jameis keeps appearing week after week.

  14. Lamarcus Says:

History says that I should trust JW and his shortcomings more than any other Bucs entity. Especially that defense and kicker

  15. Lazy animations (weeb) Says:

To be fair every about does have a game every now and then where they look bad. Just not as often as Jamie’s. Hopefully he can go a few more games before looking bad. Them go right back to looking good again!

  16. unbelievable Says:

    @BucInCLE

His average time before throwing has been steadily decreasing with each game this year, which means he’s getting more comfortable in the system and processing things quicker.

Lets hope it continues! A win against the Saints this week would be HUGE!

And if they do lose, I just hope it’s competitive, and it’s b/c the Saints beat us, not because we beat ourselves (like we did in week 3).

  17. PSLBob Says:

There’s a reason BA was named Coach of the Year twice this decade. That’s the one big difference this year. I know! As a life-long Bucs fan we’ve grown to expect the floor to drop out year after year. But there’s no hex on the Bucs. There’s no funky voodoo at One Buc Place. It’s just players and coaches. And for the first time since Chucky’s departure, we once again have a high caliber head coach. Clearly we’re missing a few pieces, and not all of the existing pieces have reached their full potential. But that will come with patience. Just look at how well many of the guys we’d given up on are playing now. It will be hard to swallow, but by the end of this year or the next, we may be lauding Licht as the greatest GM of all time. It may turn out that not all of his picks were terrible. They just didn’t get the coaching they needed.

  18. D-Rome Says:

If Jameis turns in another above average to stellar performance my opinion on his will begin to change. I admit I’m expecting the SPLAT!

  19. Curse of Gruden Says:

Dang Buc1987, you should be on Joe’s payroll as the sites “historian.”
    Great research.

  20. JimmyJack Says:

Let’s the national pundits snicker and call us the same ol Bucs. They are definitely wrong. I know it you all should know it.

This is a new Era of Buccaneers football and we are a very solid team. If y’all can’t see that then maybe you should go revisit last year and prior years and watch this team getting blowed the freak out every other week.

This team resembles nothing of those teams. This is a physical football team that will fight anybody in front of them. We are a force to be reckoned with and will contend with every team on our schedule. It going to be a fun year.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

If ya want a great comparison to who we were in prior years and who we wanna be look no further then when this team last played a Bruce Arians coached team ……….Focus on the opening quarter.

The Cardinals entered that game featuring a vaunted Ariel attack that we had to be prepared for……Arians proceeded to cram the ball down our freaking throats for an entire length of the field. And when he got the ball back he proceeded to cram it down our throats for a 2nd straight drive and another entire field…….We never adjusted nor look prepared to and looked absolutely helpless on the field.

That Buc team above resembles nothing of this year’s team. This Before c team would never look so helpless on the field…..NEVER!!!!

  22. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

The same ol Bucs wouldn’t have gone down the field and scored a td to end the half about giving up 14 straight points against the rams. That showed me a lot

  23. JimmyJack Says:

    ………..And as always GOOO BUCS!!!

    But for today GoOO RAYS!!!!!!!!

We might need Game Two to get even in this one. It all unraveled in the bottom of the fifth and that may never happen if f Kevin Kiermier does not miss on 2 hangers in the top half….Basically the only 2 mistakes by Verlander all day. Kevin, at this stage, just is not a major league hitter. He is my goat up until this point.

  24. JimmyJack Says:

Grandpappy……Great point……The same ol Bucs would not have opened the 2nd half by limiting them to a FG either.

I know my same ol Bucs and that is a TD every freaking time.

  25. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

I hope it’s possible for the fans to feel good about their team 2 weeks in a row.

    Just Win.

  26. JimmyJack Says:

Pham giving Kiermier a run for his money though with 2 Double Play grounders and some very pathetic plate discipline.

  27. JimmyJack Says:

Haha sorry for baseball talk…..Disgruntled fan with a chat box in front of me.

    Can you blame me?

  28. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

813BucBoi – your post is nonsensical. You state he has 4 good games to close out last season and has started out good this season due to coaching. Two things: 1) he didn’t play the first four games last year so pretty difficult for him to start out hot last year and 2) if it is all coaching how did he run off four good games to end last season prior to the new coach arriving?

If you wanna go back to seasons where he actually started out the season I can think of a few hot starts for him. Atlanta in particular comes to mind.

I assume you are trying to say that Arians is a good coach and is making a difference. I agree on both counts. Your argument though trying to explain it though doesn’t work.

  29. Armybucsfan Says:

I have been really hard on jameis and is blatant inconsistencies at QB but this is a team sport that now has creditable coaching for the first time since Dungy. If our D-line keeps putting pressure up front and we can play some mistake free football on both sides of the ball the sky is the limit. However, if we kee having Dotson holding on nearly every good play being made by our rb’s and Jameis tries to make something out of nothing with a bad throw in stead of running then we are doomed to repeat the past. We need to stay focused as a team

  30. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

“We still dont have the designed short passing attack

BL called a wr screen for Godwin and a rb screen for Rojo but

    we need more. alot more

to open up the run and the downfield passing

*My Dad and I are not talking about checkdowns but designed plays to run from start

until then my Dad will be in fetal paranoid position watching the game”

    Son of Kobe Faker

  31. JimmyJack Says:

Armybucsfan…….Don’t quote me on this but Im sure I heard the our OL did not commit one pentalty in that Rams game. That includes Dotson and is pretty dang impressive.

That’s a big difference to the Rams OL that was jumping around during most of that 1st quarter. Not sure wahat our defense was doing but it definitely looked like we had Goff and that entire offense out of sync to start that game. Hat tip to Bowles for that.

  32. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Tye

:Watching the Rams last night, The Bucs win seems less impressive.. I know the Seahawks are suppose to be a competitive team, I’m just saying the Rams aren’t last years Rams so was Bucs win an illusion…”

Wasn’t an illusion Tye but you’re certainly justified in wondering.
But not because of the level of competition.

In the league’s power rankings from the NFL itself…

The Seahawks are a top ten team…10th in fact..the Rams have dropped but only to 8th. They are BOTH top ten teams.

Meanwhile our opponent this Sunday is on the rise. The Saints are #3. Beat them and we’re guaranteed to move up from our current spot at #21 which is three spots higher than last week’s 24th.

AGAIN…it’s not where you are so much as where you are headed. The Buc’s are moving UP…that’s the way you do it.

  33. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Game management, Jameis. Checkdown passes and throwaways are in order. Steady on.

  34. Alanbucsfan Says:

Jameis has been fantastic the last 8 of 10 quarters.
He was not fantastic 2nd half of Giants game.
He is playing the best football of his career, and if he stays consistent, Bucs have a chance for playoffs.
I like Arians’ “be fearless” coaching.

  35. JimmyJack Says:

Hey Kobe’s Son.. .Tell your dad he doesn’t know what he is talking about…….We do have the plays he is talking about but we are running the plays that will work against the defensive looks we are getting that’s why we got 55.

Tell your dad that Byron told him to sitck that screen call up your rear…..He’d rather hot Evans down the sideline for sixty six & 6.

  36. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

You tell ‘em Kobe. That fool Arians and his two time coach of the year don’t know nothing. He needs some rando poster who always spouts nonsense to tell him what to do.

  37. Alanbucsfan Says:

For once can the Bucs take advantage of a backup quarterback and eat a W?

Bridgewater is good and that Saints’ D is no joke.
And Special Teams better be ready for Saints’ punt returner.
Bucs need to play better than they did against Rams.
Saints are playing with a chip on their shoulder from last year

  38. TampaTown Says:

We’ve got no chance thanks to Ira jinxing us by picking the Bucs to win despite him admitting SEVERAL people have told him its good luck for him to pick the Bucs to lose. This is squarely on his shoulders. If we win, doesn’t matter, Ira needs to get on board and for the love of God always pick the Bucs to lose. Please!

  39. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Can anybody root for my poor, poor Yankees?……

  40. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

Good grief Jameis will just like the other 30+ QB’S make mistakes….why is he expected to be soooo perfect every game. It takes teamwork! No player is PERFECT every game..
unless you are the ones sitting on your butts…outplaying the players on the field and out coaching the coaches who are out there EVERYDAY.

  41. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    Tye..

No the Bucs exposed the Rams weaknesses and hipped other teams on how to play them!
Bucs earned that win and that is it!

No comment about Jameis interception…this isn’t fantasy all QB’s around the league are throwing interceptions…it’s called taking the good with the bad! As long as the good is more!

  42. Dbbuc711 Says:

I love wins over any of our division rivals. Checks the win box and checks the division win box.
    😁

  43. D1 Says:

    Nole4,

Last Yr Chicago Bears .that defense is the model for how to beat the rams offense.

The Bucs offense showed how to beat the defense.

And if the fans and team expected perfection each week from the QB position,
Winston would be a memory by now. Top 10 in league is a reasonable expectation for a #1 pick overall.

End of season, if winston is ranked 10 -12 or better among his peers, I expect winston will have a earned the support of the vast majority of fans. Even the so called haters..

  44. unbelievable Says:

    @JimmyJack-

I think you are correct, first penalty free game from both Dotson and D Smith. RoJo had those 2 huge runs called back but it was holding by our tight ends both times I believe.

  45. unbelievable Says:

lol TampaTown I’m officially picking the Bucs to lose every week in the pickem league, cuz they always do the opposite of whatever I choose.

  46. Joe in Michigan Says:

Off topic history: I remember John McKay saying “Capece is kaput” before cutting Bill Capece, our kicker in 1983. What I failed to realize was Capece was 10-23 (43.5%) on field goals, and 23-26 (88.5%) on extra points (extra points were kicked from the 3-yard line in those days, what most would consider a gimme). All of that, AND HE LASTED 15 GAMES THAT YEAR!! Obviously, not the media and fan outcry that you’d see today.

  47. Joe in Michigan Says:

XP’s were from the 2-yard line, my bad.

  48. Stanglassman Says:

Bill Capece was a sheriff in Tallahassee when I was there in the early 90s. He would come out and shoot the sh!t with us when we were kicking at camp in the Summer. He gave us his # so we could call him for rides home from the bars on weekends. We took him up on it a few times. Nice guy

  49. Brandon Says:

A big difference now is coaching and preparation. Just by virtue of the coaches on the sideline with him:Arians, Leftwich, and don’t forget Tom Moore, Jameis is getting top notch coaching. We had already heard that Jameis pulls long hours at One Buc, but now that he has a top team of offensive minds with him, he is able to maximize his prep time and be way ahead of the game. He HAS to be better prepared than at other times of his career. No knock on Koetter, but Moore and Arians alone are far better than Koetter. Add Moore, Arians, along with Leftwich and anybody else they have and that’s a great assembly of coaches to get Winston on top if his game every week.

    ________________

Different age then. Capece had been with the team for a while. He had certainly earned the right to kick himself out of that slump. But kicking was far from automatic in those days. Kickers were considered good if they could hit on 70% of their attempts back then. When Mark Moseley hit 21 straight FGs in 82, it was such a big deal that he won NFL MVP that year. Mark Mosely couldn’t get a tryout these days.

  51. CalBucsFan Says:

  52. Hodad Says:

He doesn’t have to carry the team Sunday, just don’t drop it.
