“We Should’ve Had A Twist Inside To Stop The Quarterback Draw”

September 22nd, 2019

Bad day for Todd Bowles

Bucco Bruce Arians wasn’t all sunshine and daisies about his defensive coordinator after today’s game.

The Bucs head coach hopped on the Buccaneers Radio Network and talked about the game-winning and uncontested touchdown run up the gut by Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones.

Jones dropped back to pass on 4th-and-5, had nobody to throw to and scrambled uncontested up the middle for a seven-yard touchdown run.

“We should’ve had a twist inside to stop the quarterback draw,” Arians said.

Former Bucs tight end Dave Moore, the Bucs’ official game radio analyst, confirmed that Arians was talking about the play not being called by Todd Bowles rather than players not performing their assigned task.

How does that happen?

Ten days ago with the game on the line Bowles and Arians teamed up to call back-to-back timeouts and it nearly cost them the game. Now this with the game on the line.

Rough times for Bowles. Joe can imagine Jets fans in the New York area watching this game and nodding their heads. Bowles’ Jets allowed 30 points per game through the final 10 games of last season.

    Mariota special

  2. LargoBuc Says:

Yup. And not even trying another play from inside the 20 with a timeout and 13 seconds. Rough day for the staff.

  3. Figures Says:

    Stupid franchise

  4. volbuc1 Says:

You think??? SMH!! This coaching staff got schooled today!! BA should be embarrassed. No excuse to blow that lead with an 0-2 team and a rookie QB.. This is just a low as it gets!! UNBELIEAVABLE!!!!!

  5. Figures Says:

    Stupid players

  6. Wesley Says:

I seriously wish to god we could just forfeit this season.

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

not having a SPY was the ultimate kick in da nads

  8. Figures Says:

    Stupid owners

  9. Figures Says:

Lose to a rookie QB at home?

    Lmao hahahahaha ha

  10. Hodad Says:

Explain how they got down there in the first place? I thought BA said the secondary was fixed? Not today it wasn’t. Forget the last TD a rookie on the road getting his first start curved up your secondary all day. Not fixed. Do you think Licht has learned you don’t draft kickers? Guess we’ll double down, and draft two next year to compete, and waste another second rounder on a corner from a small school who sucks. More kickers! More DB’s!!

  11. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    put any person in SPY……

    but NOPE

  12. EA Says:

I agree with largobuc on this, they had time to take a shot at theendzo ewith our big receivers, the bottom line is they don’t trust either Winston or the gay to be cluch and that’s just sad.

  13. Figures Says:

    Lmao hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  14. Bucamania Says:

Licht thinks they need to draft more DBs and kickers

  15. sheep nose Says:

I have been a fan of this site for many years. Lurking until this year when I felt it funny that some were saying 3-13. I’ve been a fan of the bucs (small B) since DAY 1. In my entire life I’ve seen a few (FEW) good seasons. My son turns 13 this week. He has NO memory of even a decent year. This ranks, in my very informed opinion, as one of the WORST losses in bucs history. Out of ALL the garbage this team has presented to us over the years, this may very well be the absolute worst piece of garbage ever. Time to remove the bucs plate from my car and become a Giants fan like the vast majority of the transplanted New Yorkers who call Tampa Bay home. I’m DONE!

  16. volbuc1 Says:

LEFTWICH should be demoted right now with that play calling in the second half.. WOW!!!

  17. Jason S. Mclaurin Says:

We gotta make that kick in the end. This guy has to get his mechanics down on short range kicks. The coaches could’ve been more aggressive with the play calling too in the end. If you got a TD score it. If not set your kicker up to succeed plain and simple.

  18. Bosch Says:

Bowles runs a volatile defense Gets sacks and turnover. Gives up big plays.

  19. DB55 Says:

Cut Winston he didn’t go 8 for 8 with 8 TDs and 800 yards. Unacceptable the kid sucks

  20. James Henderson Says:

Six straight picks on DBs in 2020 !

  21. JimmyJack Says:

Don’t worry Bowles. You’re defense did plenty today.

You will keep losing games that you shouldn’t when your team cannot make routine kicks. It is not your fault.

You guys did lose as a team today and it was because of your weakest link. The same position that our GM is not capable of fixing.

  22. MadMax Says:

A little blame on Bowles for that hiccup, but man what a performance in that sack rushing D, Shaq!

Heres the deal…bottom line, kicker missed easy kicks…we lost by 1, he costed us 5….theres where you lay down the ultimate hammer!

  23. BigPoppaBuc Says:

It was a rough game for our young safeties. I still like this defense. And if we win this game we’re probably praising the pass rush and the outstanding run defense. But instead there were definitely some busted coverages and then the totally ignorance to the mobile QB with the game on the line. Lots of great and terrible from our Bucs today.

  24. Aceofaerospace Says:

0-2 at home. Seasons over. Period.

  25. TonyC Says:

Boy not sure how you guys tolerate following this team as journalists other than weekly drama.

  26. Jean Lafitte Says:

well at least we continue our losing streak at home …yippee!

Looked like the Giants home field advantage got us again! …oh wait?

  27. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Worst defense in the league, and all we can do in the 2nd half is move in position for 2 field goals, and we only made 1 of those. Winston stunk in the 2nd half and Leftwich stunk as well. Daniel Jones will turn out to be a better QB than Jay Miss.

  28. Dom>Licht Says:

0-3 talent got lucky against Panthers because they didn’t sit Cam. 0-4 the next 4 with this schedule… who are we using the #2 pick on … DB or WR????

  29. Jean Lafitte Says:

    New Yorkers travel well

  30. JimmyJack Says:

MadMax….Technically cost us 5 but really it was 6 cause it put them in position to go for a 2pt conversation. Kicker cost us an entire TD today.

This is a problem that gets fixed during the season sometimes or at least in 1 off-season.

Licht hasn’t been able to fix it in five years. He does not deserve another chance. If Gay cannot get right both he and Licht deserve to be shown the door in tandem.

  31. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Same old Bucs. Did we actually expect to win when we were up 28-10? We’ve watched this game many times before. Are we actually surprised by the outcome? Really? We’re Bucs fans. We know how this ends.

  32. Rayjay1122 Says:

There were 2 guys who balled out today. ME13 and Shaq.

2 guys should share the same jersey number of 69. Dotson and Gay because they both suck!

  33. Go Bucs 72 Says:

    I hate kickers.

  34. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Too many cooks in the kitchen.

  35. Jean Lafitte Says:

Maybe we should practice more in 100% weather it worked against the GMen …oh wait?

  36. BigMacAttack Says:

There’s plenty of blame to go around. It’s the best defense we’ve had in years. But if your kicker can’t make star points or a chip shot with the game on the line, he should not be in the NFL. Another junk kicker that Licht should be accountable for. BA gave him the job over Santos though.

  37. BigMacAttack Says:

“Extra points” my phone hates me 😂

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Got beat 22-6 in the 2nd half

  39. A Train Says:

Jean, they don’t have to travel far, the all live down here now.

  40. Billy_45 Says:

So Rojo runs like crazy with zero none zilch Play Action Passes mixed in.

Then Leftwitch decides to put Barber back in for his zero gain usual horrible cut INTO tackles and we kick a field goal.

This coaching staff is to blame for this loss GUARANTEED.

  41. Jean Lafitte Says:

Is it really to our advantage to let visiting teams wear their whites in 100* temps on the field?

  42. Billy_45 Says:

    AND,

Jameis CANT simply finish a game
That pick had NO common sense mixed in.

Lights are on (EYES) but nobody is home at least 5 times a game.

  43. A Train Says:

Its worse than that Tampabaybucfan, we got beat 22-3 in the second half.

  44. BUC CHEEKS Says:

All of you who said QB SPY are absolutely correct, god damnit… Even Eli could’ve walked in on that play. Inexcusable!!!!!!!!! Gay, GTFO!!!! Aguayo2.0 Licht pack ur bags u clown. I HATE THIS!!!!!!!!!! So sorry for giving the regular Season ticket holder’s hell for not standing and showing up!!! You’ve sat through the scorching sun for this torture game in and game out. I’m so upset I can’t even see straight. I feel so bad for those of you that were there… another death march to the cars. #ENOUGHisENOUGH

  45. BuccaneEric75 Says:

28-10 lead. The Kicker didn’t lose this game. He should never have been in position to have to win it. The secondary got torched and wasted a good game by Winston and great games by Barrett and Evans. It’s a shame people are blaming Gay.

  46. DaBux Says:

    Uh, ummm, DUH?

  47. BUC CHEEKS Says:

Are u kidding me?!!!!!!a Shame to blame Gay?! He missed how many kicks u dumbass

  48. Figures Says:

    Is anyone really surprised?

Lol I’m not surprised at all. Not even a little.

    Textbook Bucs

  49. Rayjay1122 Says:

Gay should be shown the door and the special teams coaches should also be fired. Leftwich should lose play calling duties. Defense needs to do so serious reflecting but Shaw should get a game ball and the Defensive player of the week again. Too bad he isn’t a Patriot because Shaw is champion caliber and deserves better than Tampa.

  50. MadMax Says:

Good point Jimmy…dang, you dig deep lol

  51. BUC CHEEKS Says:

It starts at the top!!!! It’s a losing franchise!!!!!! We suck!!!!!!!!! Find every way in the book to lose!!!!!!!!!! This f’ing sucks!!!!!!!!

  52. Rayjay1122 Says:

    Shaq not Shaw

    YUP! 100%

blame on both sides of the coaching staff! Should have went for the kill!

  54. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Cheeks, we were up 28-10. 28-10 shouldn’t come down to a game winning field goal. Notice how I didn’t insult you like you insulted me?

  55. SOEbuc Says:

Leftwich calling the “Koetter” run on 2nd and five with the defense stacked on the line. RoJo had a decent game, but PB had a few good runs at the beginning and BL turns the entire game over to RoJo. They need to be rotated much more through the entire game.

  56. lowercaseg Says:

fire the GM and sell the team.

  57. Game film doesn't lie Says:

Now for a week we have to hear about how Daniel Jones had a comeback win in his first start. Once again our Bucs have the uncanny ability to give any backup or First year QB the confidence to launch average at best QBs, into the limelight. Just to name a few…

Keenum. Cousins (you like that game).. Charlie Batch.. Mariota(4tds)…Trubisky(6tds). and now Jones. I have no doubt I’ve left a few off the list.

  58. SMDH Says:

Bruce Arians has sh!t the bed down the stretch of the last 2 games. He almost lost us the Carolina game with the consecutive timeout debacle and today, with 13 seconds on the clock he concedes yards and time to put the game on the line with a rookie kicker who already missed two extra points from even closer than the “game-winning” FG attempt!?! This was ALL coaching down the stretch!

  59. Defense Rules Says:

I still don’t get how this team keeps settling for FGs. It’s been happening for years now. Yes we were up 28-10 at the end of the first half. That equates to 3 FGs & 3 TDs but only 1 XP. Kudos to Matt Gay for going 4-for-5 on FGs today but boo to Matt Gay & S/Ts for missing 2-of-3 XPs. That simply can’t happen.

We took our foot off their throats though in the 2nd half. I don’t know if it was the result of trying to be too conservative or what, but settling for 1 FG in 30 minutes against that Giants defense was ludicrous. No guts, not glory as we always said.

Bucs’ defense did their job in terms of stopping the Giants rushing attack, and that’s commendable IMO. But for some reason it looked like the pass rush for most of the game just wasn’t there, and allowed Daniel Jones way too much time to throw. For some reason it didn’t look like our man-to-man coverage was nearly as tight as it had been in the first 2 games. Result? Jones threw for well over 300 yards, completing 64% of his passes to an average corps of receivers. Not good, not good at all.

  60. BucEmUp Says:

sitting here watching the game at a resort in Orlando with other fellow bucks fans we both looked at each other and asked why the f is our defense playing so conservative and in prevent mode? the offense did not lose this game like I expected instead it was our excellent defensive coordinator making a bonehead move and playing scared against a rookie quarterback in the 4th quarter

  61. BucEmUp Says:

Our kicker as well…wtf is up with our kickers?

  62. 813bucboi Says:

Giants defense made adjustments… got to give them credit….

But when the game was on line, the defense got a stop, BL called the perfect play, Winston made the perfect pass and mike made the catch…..

Only 1 person didn’t do their job and that was Gay….

    GO BUCS

  63. BigScott55 Says:

The Buccaneers will always be losers. You could have Tom Brady with the Dallas Cowboys offensive line and still be garbage. This franchise is cursed!!!!

  64. BA FAN Says:

Both BA and Tony Dungy in their miraculous first years with a new team went negative at the first of the year, including when BA finished 10-3 with his first year with the Cardinals. The Giants gave the Cowboys a tough game before losing to them this year. If they had started their Rookie QB in that game they could have surprised the Cowboys. We could have won this game if we played our Defense in the second half like we did in the first. Had we kept two kickers instead of just one and three QBs, we would have also still have won this game. It also is time to try our two Veteran Tackles we picked up to replace Dotson and make Dotson our backup OT. Our Fans still got to see the Bucs playing competitive football in this game with a lot of effort and not giving up. Kudos to our second best sacker in the NFL and his four sacks in this game.

  65. DalvinCookRules Says:

Sadly, that looked like the best team performance that these Bucs are capable of and they still lost! Despite the erratic coaching, remember last year’s staff would be getting blown out so we have improved coaching wise. Daniel Jones was harassed the entire game and still put on a show, he has potential to be an NFL HOF one day.

The biggest problem for this team is Licht. We see all of these great players around the league get drafted in later rounds, yet Licht cant even find a kicker despite all the picks and resources to work with. This team should also have much more talent on defense and OL than it does.

JW has proven he is a decent QB but certainly was not worth overall#1 pick– he gets a pass on that one because we fans wouldve mutinied had he not picked JW.

  66. lambchop Says:

Todd Bowles is known for these types of mental errors. Great coach, but not a complete coach. It’s still a breath of fresh air seeing this D doing good things mostly. But, this was a team effort to suck in the 2nd half – all phases of the game. It’s like they went into halftime and thought the game was over.

Our secondary is below average and they drafted more along those lines. Even Mel Kiper would draft better for us in the 2nd-3rd rounds! That’s painful to admit.

Will there be any tweets from Bucs staff with 28 and 10 jerseys?
