“We Didn’t Get To See Todd Bowles’ Defense With The Jets”

September 21st, 2019

Is Daniel Jones walking into a trap Sunday? Phil Simms explains.

Yes, current Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles was head coach of the Jets for four seasons. But with head coaching duties on his plate, did he devote much time to the Jets’ defense?

Bowles made his bones as a coordinator with the Cardinals working with current Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians. And it could be that Bowles is just one of those guys who is a better coordinator than head coach.

Coordinators can devote their time to just coaching defense. A head coach cannot get away with that.

Super Bowl-winning quarterback Phil Simms believes Bowles is one of those coordinators. The former Giants quarterback, while appearing in his weekly spot on the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo’s Mad Dog Radio, heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio, Simms was quite impressed with what Bowles has done with the Bucs defense through two games.

Simms, of course, was asked about the Giants benching franchise icon Eli Manning (for good?) and turning to rookie Daniel Jones, who will make his first NFL start at the Den of Depression tomorrow.

“I thought [the Giants] would wait one more week [to start Jones] because they were going to Tampa,” Simms said. “And you know, Tampa’s defense is — it’s good.

“I tell you what, they were all over the San Francisco 49ers who have one of the best offenses in the league.”

Then Simms talked about how the Bucs are showing that Bowles is a good coordinator now that his mind is not clouded by head coaching duties.

“We didn’t get to see Todd Bowles’ defense with the Jets,” Simms said. “What he is doing in Tampa — I don’t think the talent is great — but they are very clever. Really tough to read. They blitz a lot. They are going to be extremely aggressive. Defensive backs are playing pretty well. So it is not the easiest spot for Daniel Jones to go into.”

Simms suggested Jones will have to overcome a lot to succeed against Bowles’ defense right off the bat, and he thinks fans will see a lot of Jones outside the pocket to take advantage of his mobility.

Also, what Jones will see from Bowles tomorrow will be unlike anything remotely what he faced in preseason games, Simms said.

I certainly hope that’s the case but I don’t see it. VH3 is not a good cb, too short and although he’s supposed to be a speedster he gets burnt far too often. The Davis who imo is a good cb makes far too many mistakes. The sole brightspot in the secondary is Whitehead who is a complete and total monster.

The dline is great, I think Nuñez brings added dimension of toughness and eats up gaps but wdk

And the linebackers with minter are stout.

As for the blitzing, I keep hearing this crap and then see 7 total hits on the qb with Shaq accounting for 5 of them. We gotta do better if you’re going to blitz. All I’ve seen is the blitzes getting stuffed and that no bueno. Plus Bowles has to call two consecutive TOs bc no one has yet to realize that MJ Stewart is clueless and completely useless but hey wtfdik

    “HOLD YOUR HORSES!

    My Dad and I

think the Mighty Sheep Bucfans are getting carried away here

Like my Dad said repeatedly Cam and his shoulder is finished. There were 10 wide open throws that any competent QB, which includes Sundays Danial Jones, would have made to easily win the game for Car

Let my Dad and I send the Sheep Bucsfans back to reality

    IF YOU SHEEP THINK

    That our starting corners

    VH3
    Calton Davis
    MJ Stewart

is competent or even average, You sheep know nothing about football

these 3 suk. These 3 are the worst coverage group in the NFL (giants are close)

Youll see what my Dad sees soon enought”

I can say with confidence, through 2 games we have one of if not the best push from our interior lineman. We slowed down 2 teams with really good running backs. Christian Mcaffery was completely shutdown

  5. El Buco Realisto Says:

Seeing the “real” toilet bolwes defense????? Or did toilet bolwes defense just played two damaged QB’ s and nearly went .500????????????? Toilet bolwes will be EXPOSED once they play an average team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. AwShbucs Says:

Realist tell me, just how salty are Mike Smith’s ball?

Tu eres un Payaso El Bucco Realisto.

Todd Bowles will have a a top 10 defense this year. The only ones getting exposed hear are you and your boy Smitty. And vicariously Dirk Koetter for refusing to fire his boy after he had the worst defense of 2017.

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

Whatever! Hear tell it the Bucs just fluked out a win at Carolina. At home the Bucs should and will dispatch NY at 0-3.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

DB55 & Son of Kobe … You are what your record says you are. And we’re 1-1 right now. And yes, it’s thanks to the defense, because our offense is producing 15 PPG. TB has this defense believing in themselves and playing at a high level (hey, they’ve only allowed 29 points in 2 games if you take away the 16 points the Bucs’ offense gave up).

Big question is ‘Can it continue?’ Personally I think it can, PROVIDING that the big dogs stay healthy. On our DLine, that’d include Suh & Vea primarily, but also Nassib (through 2 games, Vea has 73% snaps, Suh 85% & Nassib 87% … making a nice 3-headed monster). Our LBs have played extremely well, especially LVD (98% snaps) & Barrett (81% snaps). Plus Minter has filled in beautifully for White IMO.

Our Secondary is better than you seem to think they are. Davis, VHIII & Whitehead have ALL played OVER 97% of the snaps & Mike Edwards (51% snaps) is balling now that he’s healthy & is coming on after having only 1 snap in Game 1). Having those 9 guys stay healthy, as well as getting White back soon hopefully, will be key. We’ve got better depth IMO than we’ve had for a long time, but the big dogs are gelling right now and they need to stay healthy.

  9. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    “Mr Defense Rules

In the ever long 16 game season, the defense will win games (Past 2) and the offense will need to win the games when the defense dont play well

Our offense under Leftfoot cant do that. My Dad and I actually believe Left will be a better head coach than x and O coordinator. He has a great presence on the stand and very professional

HE IS NOT OR HAS PROVEN IN 11 GAMES IS GOOD AT PLAYCALLING AND DESIGN

Youll see what my Dad sees soon enough

concerning our 3 starting Burnt Biscuits. They are getting great help/protection from the safteys and the defensive front BUT

THEY CANT COVER. THEY JUST CANT COVER”

Hush yo mouth we got this

  11. BigMacAttack Says:

Doubters, sit back and enjoy the show. The Bowles Defense will be everywhere tomorrow. Jones will throw 5 ints. It could get ugly. Hide and Watch, you fake fans. 😂😂😂

  12. Ndog Says:

Son of Kobe Faker, you do understand that Arains is still designing the plays right? He literally said I one point “I designed the da*n play”. Sooo

  13. eoschwartz Says:

This defensive line is very difficult to block as it has very likely 2 of the strongest men in the NFL, Vea and Suh playing side by side. The bull rush from their side doesn’t permit a quarterback to step up in their throwing lane nor can offensive lineman create holes on their side.

This allows the defense to slide the linebackers away from that side and make the running plays predictable to going away from Vea/Suh effectively forcing runs into Allen and Gholston and giving David and Whitehead good angles to keep the gains less than 3 yards.

Hopefully this scheme keeps the defense in manageable 3rd downs

  14. TOM Says:

Leftwich right now is not a good OC & I can’t envision him a HC. Bowles should stick with being a DC. He proved he is not a good HC.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

Joe can you just erease all these comments and let us start over?

These are absolutely terrible takes. Everybody needs a redo once in a while.

  16. Pickgrin Says:

    “Toilet Bowles”???

Rhealist – you are such a piece of…. um – work.

Through 2 games, Todd Bowles is the #1 reason for Bucs fans to be optimistic that we can field a competitive team this year. Perhaps even a winning team.

We will know more after this game. The Giants are a team we should beat by at least 10 points. Especially playing at home….

I will be happy with even a 1 point win – but even happier if this team plays a good, balanced game with minimal mistakes – which should result in a sound thrashing of the blue team – like 30-13 range or similar.

If these players can just focus on doing their job play in and play out – playing mistake free and penalty free football the majority of the game – this Buccaneers team can go toe to toe with the league’s best teams and even come out victorious vs some of them.

We have a top 5 coaching staff, a top 10 Offense and a top 20 Defense – looking purely at talent.

That should be more than enough to be competitive in this league and win at least half of the games played…

Its that attention to detail by both coaches and players that can make the real difference and get this team into the 10 or 11 win category.

We have enough talent – and we definitely have the coaching/scheming advantage in most cases – to win a bunch of games in 2019.

IF (and its a big IF) – the individual players can focus on and become successful at playing fundamental, mistake free football.

“Bucs beating Bucs” is still a big concern for this team 2 games in…

and if it continues, games will be lost that should have been easily won.

THIS is the real meaning of “culture change”. Accountability! Do your job! Play mistake free football. Quit beating your own damn selves week in and week out….

BA has yet to crack that nut – but its obvious he is working hard at it and will no doubt ultimately be successful at whittling away a bunch of those red marks on the weekly “accountability chart” – and in doing so, turn this Bucs team into a WINNER.

90% of NFL games are not “won” by the team that makes the least “mistakes”.

  17. Pickgrin Says:

Should read – “are won by the team that makes the least mistakes” – Duh

Where’s that “edit option” Joe? Its been a long time coming.

This site desperately needs an “ignore” option as well for a whole slew of your regular posters…

  18. Bucamania Says:

Bowles is a mad scientist and I expect this D to thrive tomorrow. Good luck moving Suh and Vea out of the middle. Shaq off the edge. DBs flying around. I haven’t felt this good about the defense since Monte Kiffen days.

  19. Touchdown, Tampa Bay Says:

We got our rock and our slingshot! Giants will fall! (Buc-lieve-that)

  20. Defense Rules Says:

@Pickgrin … “This site desperately needs an “ignore” option as well for a whole slew of your regular posters”. LMAO Pickgrin, but we already have that. It’s labeled ‘Don’t read this; it’s crappola’. Not really all that hard to recognize. Kinda like there’s no way to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Liked your post BTW, although I have a gut feeling the game will be closer than 30-13. Like you, I’m convinced we have a Top-5 coaching staff, although I feel our Defense MIGHT be a Top-10 IF we can stay healthy. I have no clue at this point what our offense will turn out like. Do know, however, that I’m not exactly enamored with the way it’s played in these first 2 games. Still early in the season though, and ME13 hasn’t got untracked yet. Neither has OJ or Cam. Can’t hold them all down forever.

  21. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @pickgrin

There will never be an edit option as I and the other founding fathers of the JoeBucsFan comment section voted it so long, long ago!!!!!!!!!!!! We cannot allow weak minded sheep constantly correcting their wrong opinions and claim later that they were right all along!!!!!!!! Its bad enough that some feeble sheep try to get away with lies now!!!!!!!!!! Let the archive stand as THE testament for the future to see the TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Pickgrin Says:

Rhealist – the archives are indeed fully available for all to go back and look at what an ass you consistently make of yourself….

DR – it was always likely to take a few games for the offense to find its groove.

Add in that Mike Evans hasn’t been 100% due to illness the first 2 games and OJ Howard has played like crap thus far. Those 2 will get on track in the near future and play like the difference makers they are.

What’s encouraging is that the interior Oline seems to be run blocking much better this year. That alone with reasonably solid defense should keep us in games and even win a few – while we wait for the passing attack to start hitting on all cylinders (which may take 6-8 games unfortunately).

This is a fairly complex passing offense that has likely only been about 50% “implemented” thus far.

People ignore that in Arians first year in AZ (2013) – veteran QB Carson Palmer looked terrible the first half of that season – threw like 14 picks in the first 7 games and the team was 3-4 before things started clicking for the offense – and that Cardinals team then won 7 of 9 games down the stretch to finish 10-6.

  23. TexBuc Says:

I like what I have seen so far this season.

    Go Bucs

@Rhealist….*Peter Griffin voice* “Shut up Meg…”

  25. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Bowles has remarked more than once how much he is enjoying focusing on the defense and not worrying about all of the other things a head coach has to worry about.  He is happy in his role and rededicated to the job.

    Ndog and Pickgrin,  good points!

Arians has delegated game planning to Leftwich but he has final control overall.  He designed the playbook.  Leftwich consults with Winston and creates the game plan and the early game script.  Then he calls the offensive game.

Bowles creates the defensive game plan and then he calls the defensive game.

I think that the year away from coaching meant that Bruce had a new and revised approach when he accepted taking on the challenge that the Buccaneer franchise represented.

BA is doing something he did not do the same way at Arizona. He is managing the game as the head coach during the game.  He is overseeing both the OC and the DC. He is focusing on other aspects and communicating with everyone concerned during the games.

    In BA I trust.
