Upset With Defense

September 29th, 2019

Shaq speaks.

A guy who is on pace to be the best free agent signing in the NFL since the Packers signed Reggie White, Bucs pass rusher Shaq Barrett, wasn’t all smiles and giggles after one of the wildest Bucs wins since beating the Saints in New Orleans last year.

Rams quarterback Jared Goff threw for 517 yards today. But without the ferocious pass rush of the Bucs, Goff may have thrown for 700 yards. If the Bucs didn’t get pressure on Goff, he would have been completing passes at will.

When did the Bucs give Mike Smith another job?

And it was Barrett, who had another sack today to give him nine through four games, had the key hit that won the game. He splashed Goff late in the game and jarred the ball loose and Ndamukong Suh had a 37-yard scoop and score to put the game on ice.

It was Suh’s second scoop-and-score of his career.

So Joe asked Barrett after the game if it was fair to say the pass rush won the game. Barrett was appalled Joe would ask such a question.

“No! Barrett squealed. “I would not say that. We gave up 40 points.”

Barrett promised that the Bucs would resolve whatever was wrong with the defense. But for the first time in a long time, the pass rush is not an element that ails the Bucs.

“We have too many good players to be giving up these points,” Barrett said.

Well they gave up 33 actually, to be fair.

I don’t get Bowles going to a really soft zone after giving the Rams a fit early on. The Rams moved the ball at ease every time we went to zone. Under pressure they got some plays, but also make a lot of mistakes. I think I’d be running about 85% pressure and 15% zone.

  2. Petty Officer Buc Says:

What a professional! The good thing is that he has the stats to command respect in the locker room, so he better bark at some of the younger players who might get too comfortable after a win like that.

Love the attitude and the play from Sack Barrett.

  3. ship thief Says:

    YESSSSS!
    This is the truth.
Keep doing what you do Shaq!

  4. BridleOaks Buc Says:

    Sign this guy!!!

  5. MadMax Says:

Oj Howard and next years 2nd for Ramsey…thats it! Both are first round picks! If they wont go for that then nevermind! Shaq has a right to be upset…big vet balling out because of his size, talent and experience. Thats what we need at corner…size talent and experience! Maybe Ramsey just needs a new zip code like Talib did.

Imagine this D with the talents of Ramsey….whooo buddy!

  6. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I like what he said. Very cool.

  7. MadMax Says:

And yes, extend Shaq IMMEDIATELY…..i’d say give him a blank check but we can only afford so much due to cap room 🙁

  8. adam from ny Says:

shaq is basically un-signable at this point…that is a problem…

and the defensive backs as a whole are a major issue as well…

good win – yet we definitely have 2 problems

  9. reply Says:

LOVED HIS RESPONSE!! PAY THIS MAN RIGHT FRIGGIN NOW!!!!!!!!! All hail Shaq B.

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @PettyOfficer

Love your nickname for Shaq….”Sack” Barrett.

  11. Pewter power Says:

We gonna a mention mike smith every week now? All offseason we knew they were young and experienced so what does the coordinators have to do with it? They VH3 and Davis aren’t that good to begin with, why do you think we bring so much pressure on blitzes. Corners can be beat with speed or good route running doesn’t matter and we’ll see those same type passing yards next week in new Orleans

  12. Day1BucFan Says:

We have a leader on Defense!!!!!!!

  13. BucAllNight Says:

SACK Barrett w nothing But FACTS!!!

We are still LEARNING our DEFENSE

    Way to Rebound Gay

    The DRIVE to 11 – DASH – 5

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  14. JimmyJack Says:

Not upset with the defense. We had Good totally confused most of that game. It allowed us to jump out in front. A lead we never gave up. May have been too close for comfort but Goff was noticably rattled for much of the day and it made a huge difference. Kudos Bowles. Great game plan.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

BucAllNight……11dash5 still in play and it never felt so good!!!

  16. cmurda Says:

If this man, speaks I’m listening. Sack Barrett has been amazing. It’s real for him to say that the defense isn’t there. These are the types of games that your D should make the opposing offense work for and then we should be killing clock in the 4th. Nevertheless, Shaq forced a pick with pressure on Goff, got a pick himself and a sack fumble for the Suh scoop and score. Otherwordly stuff.

  17. Rodney Munch Says:

The Bucs can always franchise him next year if they needed to, assuming they didn’t give him some weird clause that says they won’t franchise him. So for those panicking about next year, calm down.

As for signing him… I know this is sacrilege to say, but I’d still want to see more than 4 games of production – even if it’s been amazing production. If they signed him to a big deal and then it’s week 8 and he has 10 sacks and has basically disappeared, then the Bucs are in trouble. Also what kind of discount would the Bucs get right now? I mean sure, if they can give him JPP’s $12m/year and get an opt out, then sure, do it – but I can’t imagine any agent would do that deal right now.

  18. cmurda Says:

Let me add 67 pass attempts for Goff. That means we had the pressure on them to score all game and completely closed down the few run attempts they had. We have now shut down McCaffrey, Saquon and Gurley in 3 straight weeks. We get that secondary playing and we got ourselves a defense.

  19. Pigsueybucsfan Says:

    Cmurda well said. GO BUCS!

  20. Rodney Munch Says:

I think the Bucs defense has really been missing White. Minter is a good run stuffer, but a huge liability in the passing game, he just doesn’t have the speed. Also MJ continues to look like a slow Ryan Smith.

Speaking of which, the real (and awful) Ryan Smith comes back next week. I can’t believe I’d ever say this, but it’s possible that Ryan Smith *MIGHT* be an upgrade. If Bowles can make that worthless trash a usable player, he will be a miracle worker.

  21. Waterboy Says:

Joe he’s even better than your guy Dee Ford.

  22. FairMinded Says:

Game changer and culture changer. Open the vaults for this dude!

  23. Ricky Says:

Do you guys think i should buy a Barret Jersey? I hope Licht resigns him.

  24. MadMax Says:

Also, Mr Suh deserves a highlighting article. That BEAST isnt playing around!!! Another great free agent signing! The way he chased down what was a sure Rams TD from their wr (forget his name) was awesome!

“But fire Licht now….he doesnt have a clue”….lol, you drama queens calling for hi head are funny….hits and misses are gonna happen! We’re hitting this year!

Had it not been for the kicking and DB flubs last week, we’d be 3-1 and in playoff talks!

  25. MadMax Says:

    Mr. SUH, THE REAL #93!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

Shaq demanding accountability I LOVE THAT sign him to an extended contract ASAP

  27. SOEbuc Says:

He’s in monster mode in this Bowles scheme right now. Sign.

  28. Frank Pillow Says:

Suh and Vea have been a huge contributors to Barrett’s success…but credit where it’s due…Barrett was everywhere today. Everywhere. He was arguably the best player on the field not named Chris Godwin. Kudos to Barrett for playing himself into a monster payday and going out there and earning it each and every snap!

  29. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

“We need to sure up the slot corner

When he comes back next week, have Ryan Smith as outside corner and move VH3 in the slot

    Stewart needs backup safety”

    Ron Munch

  30. BUC CHEEKS Says:

@MadMax… Show heart and play like this and we won’t be calling for anyone’s head you nitwit! Way to show up today!!! Now keep it going!!!!!! One last thing, SHAQ BARRETT… if Licht doesn’t get him signed… Yikes!!! I won’t even go there right now. He’s the MAN!!!!!!!!! John Elway must be sick.

  31. July Joe Says:

Give this team a true #1 CB (Patrick Peterson or Jalen Ramsey could be had in a trade) and it’s on!!!!!!!

  32. “That guy” Says:

    Sign him now. !!!!!!!!!

  33. BucEmUp Says:

I remember fans in here and experts on the radio used to swear up and down that the reason our secondary was bad was because we had no pass rush. Now we have a DOMINANT pass rush amd yet our corners STILL dont play bump and run, or jam them at the line. Most of the routes ran on us are shorter, intermediate routes to get the ball out quicker, or slants across the middle..Throw the timing off with the qb and it will make the pass rush even better and the opposing qb even worse.

They better sign Barret before he gets away

  34. BucEmUp Says:

The corners were playing 10 yards off thw frieking line of scrimmage. I was watching Mike smiths defense with a fierce pass rush that would have lost without Jameis and the offense playing like their hair was on fire.

Tod Bowles almost cost them the game and there is zero excuse for it. Start PRESSING!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Jimbuc2 Says:

Ram’s O-line was left dazed and confused. During the broadcast I heard “What are we doing?” come a panic-stricken Ram player(name withheld pending notification of kin). That would put a smile on HOF99’s mug. Can we just put MJ Stewart on the pines? Clearly he is not up to speed(pun intended). Next, stop with the VH111 is a corner BS; dude is barely serviceable in nickel. If Licht can upgrade those two spots our threadbare secondary becomes the fire blanket our defense needs. Dropping a 55 burger on a SB team is sweet, giving up 40 is a sh!t sandwich and both suits and coaches have to take a big bite of stink load for that. Go Bucs! Beat dem Aints!!

  36. Buccernutter Says:

The thought of us not resigning Shaq makes me want to cry.

  37. unbelievable Says:

    LOVE IT!

Don’t rest an your laurels, always looking to improve. Giving up 40 should be unacceptable, no matter your personal accolades.

What a great pick up this guy was!
