“The Biggest Thing Was The Effort”

September 9th, 2019

Lots of high-fives and butt-slappin’ at One Buc Palace for the collective play of the defense yesterday.

And why not, they scored points, looked alive and had plenty of rest thanks to two pick-6 throws by America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles explained today. He saw a hungry and committed unit.

“The biggest thing was the effort. You know, we had 11 guys getting to the ball,” Bowles said. “We made some mistakes but they covered it up by the effort they showed. That was the biggest thing.”

That effort included still-getting-into-shape studs Lavonte David and Vita Vea. But Bowles said the Bucs still have “kinks we got to work out with them,” referring to their lack of practice.

Typical Bowles news conference. Lots of love for everyone and nothing too meaty. Joe’s focusing on the effort because Joe is confident Bowles wouldn’t sugar coat that if he wanted to see better.

  2. BigHog Says:

In this game it was up to the defense to take over and win….and we didn’t win!!

  3. Cometowin2 Says:

The defense overall looked much better. We’ll need them to be.

  4. Pittsshore Says:

Great performance by the D. Only gave up 17 points. Which means we should have won.

  5. Another J Says:

It was nice to see the corners not playing 15 yards off the ball…
Defense already looks better than last year.

  6. diggler Says:

Starting Whitehead was a great move. VHIII we all knew could play corner well. Gholston looks made for this defense. Shaq Barrett was a very good pick up by Licht. Carlton Davis is a stud man no idea why he has so many haters. One issue is that this defense can be ran on if the LB’s don’t do their job and they didn’t do their job in the run game so I hope we get some block shedders in there if not look for a big game my Mccaffrey Thursday night.

  7. DB55 Says:

Biggest question on def is wtf was Darian Stewart playing safety when Edwards was healthy enough to play? Darian Stewart looked like the second coming of Cotton Candy Conte.

Thursday you morons will see the difference between Donte Jackson who should be a buc vs MJ Stewart. Idiots the whole lot!!! But but jameis threw a pick wawawawawa

  8. DB55 Says:

Whitehead is easily top 3 player on this defense behind Suh and LVD.

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

LMAO here. We had no pass rush yet the defense looked better? Typical Buc fans living in Walt Disney’s world. Every GD year its the same ole sanitized sh++ .Don’t kid yourselves with the sugar sprinkled lattes. This team Sucks to holy hell and beyond.

Wait til we play a team with real weapons!

  12. Old School Athlete Says:

Yes, there were bright spots yesterday amidst the carnage. I agree that the effort was better then we’ve seen the last five years. I didn’t see any Lumpy Loafing or Kasual Kluelessness. There is evidence that BA and his accountability has made a change. Also evidence that one major change is still needed.

  13. Todd Says:

    Mike Johnson—

I suspect you have daddy issues. That pent-up nastiness usually means you could never secure your Dad’s love and respect. I’m sorry. Sure, let it go in here. We’re all here to support you.

We love you. You’re important. Your opinion matters.

Never let your father issues strip you of that, sport.

  14. NPRSageBoy Says:

Effort is a 6 letter word. The last 2 years you only needed 4 letters to describe this defense. That’s progress.

  15. Sydney Says:

It’s fools gold for the fools. They don’t have a pass rush. Period. Blitz most of the QB’s on their schedule and watch what will happen.

  16. Buc Raybolt Says:

1 game in a new system and half of you want to throw Jameis out of town. Take a look at Arians’s first season in Arizona. They lost the opener, were up and down in the first half of the season, then went on a tear in the 2nd half. I’m with Joe on getting to 3-3 by the bye week. Think the offense is going to struggle, but improve week-to-week until then.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

@diggler … “One issue is that this defense can be ran on if the LB’s don’t do their job and they didn’t do their job in the run game”. Did we watch the same game diggler? SF ran 32 times for 98 yards (3.1 YPC). Longest was 18 yds. Breida was held to 15 carries for 37 yds (2.5 YPC). LVD had 7 tackles & White had 6 tackles. How can you say that they didn’t do their job?

  18. DB55 Says:

Man I hope we get more out of a 5th overall pick than what we got yesterday. Vita too he looked good but was a step slow imo but jameis though not sure if you heard but he threw an interception

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The defense did much better but we certainly didn’t have much of a pass rush….we really missed having Josh Allen & his solo tackle and no sacks….

And, Joe….why did you Rock Star, Mark Dominick run off Michael Bennett for no good reason?

Oh Gawd… the irrational Stat Carriers have awoken from their drunken stupor and attacking the messengers

  21. BucfaninMi Says:

Even if Gerald McCoy still was on the team, you wouldn’t know it, he put up the same numbers as if he were!

  22. Tmaxcon Says:

    Secondary was competitive.
Rojo looked like a completely different player.

Hopefully this is something that will continue and improve through the season.

Passing game sure was out of whack though.

  24. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

The niners are a very bad team offensively and got tired on the defensive side in the 2nd half….the bucs are a bad team personnel wise and that is solely on the GM

  26. tmaxcon Says:

Midget made a nice play but newsflash that’s whst high round picks are supposed to do consistently not every 4 years…. vh3bust will let this minor league franchise down

  27. Sport Says:

Tmax is having an identity crisis. Hah!

This defense looks greatly improved. Agreed we will be seeing much better weapons on Thurs (Mcaffrey) Newton seems to.have the same accuracy and decision making issues our Qback has. He’s beatable. Stop Mcaffrey, don’t sleep on Olsen and Run Rojo Run.

    Go Bucs!

    In BA I Trust!

  28. The Buc Realist Says:

The defense did well?????????? against a bad offense!!!!!! 31 pts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Smitty defense was 23.5 pts per game average for two years before all the injuries!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When are we supposed to see the effect of these so called “great” coaching??????????????

    Hold them accountable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. AMI_Chris Says:

    Who cares? Team sucks.

  30. diggler Says:

@Defense Rules – Replay the game White and David (no surprise) were absolutely manhandled and got sealed off almost every run play. White looked gassed from the flu so ill give him a pass but overall hes very very average and playing the run right now hes a liability.

  31. Jason S. Mclaurin Says:

I been loving this defense and it looks like Bowles has an upper hand in the assistant coaches rooms right now as well. His unit is taking over the identity of this team
