Tale Of Two Defenses

September 29th, 2019

Todd Gurley led a Rams rushing attack that combined for 11 carries for 28 yards today.

For the third freakin’ week in a row, a powerful running game was completely neutered by the Bucs defense — yet the defense still allowed four touchdowns and two field goals.

Man, the Bucs are one wacky team.

The run defense is about 27 times better than the pass defense, which is scary bad. Ndamukong Suh, Will Gholston, Vita Vea and the linebackers have been so damn sound against the run.

Shaq Barrett is a one-man terror and is saving a pass rush that isn’t well balanced and is too inconsistent without the endless blitzes.

But every NFL defensive says defense coach always says defense is about stopping the run first and going from there. The Bucs have that down, which bodes well going forward. Joe will close his eyes and assume the young defensive backs will improve as the season progresses.

If we get JPP back playing opposite of Shaq on passing downs we will be okay. We need something in the secondary though

  2. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Joe, what scares me is.. we were told it was the previous coaching staff and NOT the players. I see some great coaching at some positions, but how much longer can we sit back and watch the secondary throw up on itself? At some point, it MUST be the players. Hope they get it together.

  3. DB55 Says:

That’s what you pay a pro bowl DT to do. Close out big games with BIG PLAYS not ice cream but wtfdik

  4. kgh4life Says:

    @Joe

The Bucs defense technically gave up 34 points, be fair.

  5. Jean Lafitte Says:

Imagine if we had GMC still. Would there be the same production? I don’t think so, even Gholston and Vea seem more inspired with Suh being here.

  6. DB55 Says:

Sad that we need 50+ points to win a game. Mofo damn near gave me a heart attack.

  7. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

After beating the NFC champs I won’t complain about a d that forced 4 turnovers and scored a TD

    Go Bucs!!!

  8. DB55 Says:

I guess the argument of who’s a better DT is over?

  9. Tval Says:

I see it as a combination of lack of talent and a new coach not sure of their, individual, strengths. If they don’t have the ability to cover man to man they HAVE to utilize more zone to keep receivers in front of them. Bowles is ALOT like Jim Schwartz. It’s a love/hate depending on the week. Eagles fans pretended he was Belicheck during the sb run. Remember the Vikings and Falcons being SHUT DOWN?? And last year, minus a RARE Alshon drop, WHO KNOWS? REPEAT?? These defenses “bend but don’t break” and put pressure on offenses to make, multiple, LOOOOONG drives. Bowles WILL be great if you give him time.
    And, Oh yeah, PAY JAMEIS!!!

  10. Jean Lafitte Says:

    yep

  11. Ndog Says:

I know know one wants to believe it but in a few weeks Mr. JPP will be back and even if he isnt the same they cant just ignore him. This could be a sick one two punch if can just hold on til he gets right.

  12. Jim Says:

    LETS GOOOOO!

  13. Franklin 813 Says:

Greedy Williams > SM Bunting imo

  14. Tval Says:

With gmc, under Bowles, it’s a DIFFERENT Gerald. PERIOD!
We’ve seen it on offense and defense. These coaches are better.
Maybe they just needed new blood to inspire them, or, Koetter was just THAT bad. How aid Atlanta doing? Rhetorical

  15. Petty Officer Buc Says:

I have to say I’m enjoying the revival of Wil Gholston and this run defense.

  16. Jean Lafitte Says:

That’s how you win today. Outscore your own defense and voila!

  17. SB Says:

Hey guys, I am as excited about the win as everyone else but SHAQ BARRETT ………IS the focking defense right now.
Dude is in on EVERY play the defense makes!!!!!!
    Bad A$$ pickup by Licht!!

  18. Sloppy Joe Says:

Be happy with the win DB55 they come few and far between.

  19. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

What I saw was loose coverage…and HORRIBLE tackling!!!!

  20. VegasBuc Says:

JPP and Ryan Smith will be back. RS was looking good in preseason. Could use the help

  21. Bobbo Says:

Maybe it’s because they were game planning for stud RBs the past few weeks lol

  22. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Hip ..Hip ..Hooray

    SHAQ!!! SHAQ!!! SHAQ!!!

  23. Rick Says:

67 attempted throws though. Any secondary will show cracks when you pound them like that. No excuse though, work to be done.

  24. JimmyJack Says:

Our passrush is looking Scarry for opposing teams and are covering up for the secondary. Time for the backend to start feeling the pressure to make plays themselfs…….I will not put it past Ryan Smith to step right in and put it on his own shoulders. Big contributations come from unlikely sources all the time in sports………….Davis is one guy holding his own in coverage BTW…….hope he is not hurt badly.

    NEW ERA!!!!! GOOO BUCS!!!!

  25. TampaBay AllDay Says:

Great game Tampa. You shocked the world with this win. True underdogs came thru in the clutch. Im so proud of yall man

  26. reply Says:

    PAY SHAQ BARRETT RIGHT NOW!!!

  27. Jean Lafitte Says:

    C’mon Cowboys!!

  28. David Says:

I will keep saying it, there are some good players in the secondary. They are young and getting isolated a lot because they blitz a lot. They should improve.
They just aren’t as bad as some of you are saying.
They also are not as bad as the 500 passing yards given up would indicate. When the other team is the defending NFC champs and forced to air it out because your offense keeps putting up points and they can’t run the ball, you’re going to give up a ton of passing yards.

That said, if they add a lock down dude like Jalen Ramsey that would be awesome.
I would offer next year’s first round pick in VH3

  29. orlbucfan Says:

Chris “UNGODLY” Godwin. He better be the NFC Offensive Player of the Week!

  30. reply Says:

And @Jaboowins if you keep this up, I might jump back on your bandwagon. Just stop throwing senseless picks tho! You are better than that!

  31. AwShbucs Says:

Trade for Jalen Ramsey, put Hargreaves in the slot and Stewart on the a bench. Defense fixed.

  32. Colonel_mp Says:

SHAQ is the quarter pole leader for Defensive Player of the Year!

  33. reply Says:

    @Jean Lafitte

Yes please Cowgirls beat NOLA tonight!! Battle for 1st place regardless next week!

  34. JimmyJack Says:

Rick true but at the same time out DL made them one dimensional. Secondary gotta make plays and put that game away early. They couldn’t and the passrush had to carry the load. Secondary has gotta pull their weight which they didn’t today. We bailed them out and got them a week to get better. Time to step up or step down.

  35. JimmyJack Says:

Feels like we only waiting for the passrush to make the play. Secondary gotta give us something. A few nice tackles don’t count. Them guys gotta do their jobs or it’s gonna cost us.

Secondary gotta get better or it will cost us losses. Period.

  36. Bucsfan1988 Says:

All these bloggers wanting us to trade for Ramsey….

Have y’all forgot about another SHUTDOWN corner who would drastically change our secondary?? He was suspended first 6 games:..

    PATRICK PETERSON!!!!!!

    Yes, I agree VH3 sucks!!!
    I would trade him and a 2020 3rd (even 2nd) for PP to Arizona…

I would also bench MJ Stewart and put Bunting in the slot to work…..

  37. Figures Says:

Just finished watching. Had to DVR the game.

Awesome game by Winston. Great game. Good to see. Keep it up. Be consistent and good things will happen (I think).
Shaq wow. What a player he is. Better pay that man and keep him around.

    Should be 3-1. Da mn.

  38. #1bucsfan Says:

    1988 not a bad ideal

  39. AwShbucs Says:

    1988…

Pat Pete works too. I just want a true #1 corner opposite Carlton Davis who’s shaping up to be a legit #2, and Vernon is good in the slot.

MJ Stewart is by far the biggest weak link. He needs to be on the bench.

  40. Tbbucs3 Says:

Remember when we thought getting a pass rusher would fix our secondary issues? Well, we certainly have a pass rusher……

  41. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    EVERY QB THROWS PICKS….SMH
JUST LIKE EVERY TEAM ARE PROFESSIONALS TRYING TO WIN!!!😤

  42. stpetebucsfan Says:

    David

Agree completely about our secondary. Watching Queen do their hit…I want it all and I want it now….reminds me of Buc fans.

Rojo just exploded. He had over 100 yards in two carries that were eradicated by Buc ball…illegal shift…holding….we clearly have some details to iron out but the potential is there.

Meanwhile for all of you trashing our DB’s remember how many trashed ROJO TOTALLY last year and were unhappy with him this year until the past few games.

Again I get it…we’re Americans…we need INSTANT gratification. I want it all and I want it NOW.

    Patience grasshoppers.

  43. SOEbuc Says:

VH3 is a joke. He has to play Smitty CB because he isn’t big enough to cover man.

  44. SOEbuc Says:

    AwShBucs

MJ Stewart is most definintly playing better than VH3. Stewart has been playing much better coverage and getting tackles than last year. VH3 has no size and strength. He has to play Smitty CB because of this and he still gets toasted.

  45. SOEbuc Says:

    Bucsfan1988

That would be sweet. Work out a deal and trade JPP for Peterson. A multi pro bowl vet teaching these excelling young DBs how Bowles defense works.

  46. adam from ny Says:

okay…we have a real problem with the 3rd level of defense…

the solution potentially is peterson the cardinal…

arians likes his cardinals…we all know that…

around midseason, if we are in the hunt, we should swap a couple of our defensive backs and a pick for peterson…we have an overload of averageness to swap out…

he will fit in fast under bruce and be a quick fix to some issues

  47. adam from ny Says:

    forget ramsey

  48. Buccfan37 Says:

A new Bucs record for points scored. I remember a game lost in the past against the Jets that was high scoring. Can’t exactly remember which game the Bucs scored their previous high. New Orleans last year, maybe not.

  49. AwShbucs Says:

    Soe..

Idk wtf game you were watching. But Stewart was getting burnt left and right all day. The one play he made had to be reviewed for potential pi.

Vernon is a much better slot corner than Stewart he just sucks on the outside. That’s why we need to trade for Ramsey or Peterson so we can have a legit number 1 corner.

  50. July Joe Says:

TRADE FOR PATRICK PETERSON OR JALEN RAMSEY NOW AND THIS DEFENSE CAN BE REALLY SCARY!!!!!!!!

  51. unbelievable Says:

That secondary is still a mess but at least we’re forcing turnovers and bringing pressure more consistently.

MJ Stewart should never see the field again, dude is just awful.

SMB is pretty bad too, but he’s a rookie so that’s understandable.

VH3, as most of us have known for years, is just too small and too slow. Giant liability.

Shaq, Nassib, Gholston, LVD, Minter and Whitehead are all playing great!

  52. bucs4ya Says:

A trade for Peterson I’d say is more likely and would make more sense. He’s played for the coaches before, his a shut down corner, a true vet with great leadership qualities. Don’t get me wrong Jalen is a beast but I think he’d cost too much and I just believe PP would be better for the secondary in the long run.
And this is coming from an FSU fan.
