Sour Punt Return Data, Gunner Blocking

September 24th, 2019

Not Mike Edwards’ strength

Bobo Wilson is among the NFL punt returners with three or more tries at the craft this season.

Who wants to guess where he ranks among that group?

Wilson checks in at No. 25 with an average of 3.3 yards per return. His longest is 11 yards.

Former Bucs punt returner Adam Humphries averaged 8.3 yards per return during his Bucs career.

Bucco Bruce Arians himself called out the Bucs’ punt returning against the Giants as being poor, specifically the blocking of the New York gunners.

Joe went to the All-22 film and those blocking duties fell on rookies Sean Murphy-Bunting and Mike Edwards, and veteran safety Andrew Adams to a lesser extent.

The quick scouting report would say Edwards looks slow, almost tired. Perhaps he’s not in shape yet after missing a lot of preseason with injuries? Murphy-Bunting isn’t as aggressive-looking as Joe has seen other guys in that role. He made a couple mistakes but also bounced back in the game. Adams was meh.

Arians has boasted about his special teams coaches and the emphasis there, so Joe is very hopeful things will improve. For some reason, the Bucs, from a personnel standpoint, haven’t made the returner position a priority in many years.

Bobo also looked very indecisive on a couple of returns…..ran straight forward into the tackles instead of moving left or right.

I will say this……Pinion’s kickoffs were all very deep….that’s a positive.

  2. Figures Says:

    BOBO SUCKS

  3. Mike10 Says:

Bobo has shown nothing. Even when he’s got space he moves backwards at times.

Didn’t we sign a guy specifically for return duties?

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Pinion ranked 3rd in the NFL in touchback percentage.

Too bad we couldn’t stop NY from the 25 or the 20…..

  5. PUGS&BUCS Says:

Bucs Special Teams is largely terrible. Never a factor in any game except if it’s to hurt us.

  6. Anonymous Says:

Maybe “You should remember his name” averaging like 14.4 yds per kick return TJ Logan could give it a try?

And @BetterBucFan that stat isn’t accurate just a joke before you go spend like 30 minutes refuting it!! LMAO

That QB Whisperer is really impressing. From the play calling (that he’s not doing), to the real-time coaching mistakes, to his explosive special teams (I mean, who’d have thought Bobo would amount to anything? So glad they got rid of Hump for chump change), and he’s really turned Winston around. And so many were thinking he’d not turn this thing around quick wih his great coaching. So effective. We must add he’s also revolutionalized coaching techniques from the the distant golf cart. I new meaning for phoning it in. Yeah, it let’s him see the whole picture. I am sure Mike Evans will have a SB within three years. For another team. And Winston? Who gives a f**k?

Thank God they stumbled across Shaq Barrett or there would not be much to talk about at all. How pitiful too if we didn’t have Bowles making some difference on the D.

  8. BUC CHEEKS Says:

I’d say throw Scotty Miller in there but one of the last times we seen him catch a punt he called a fair catch with guys 20 yards away from him!

  9. Etzel Says:

May be a bad idea to have our starting safety blocking gunners on punt return. He very well may be tired from the extra snaps. And being tired leads to injuries. He needs to focus everything on coverage. He did not have a good game yesterday.

  10. Ndog Says:

Who are we kidding it’s Jameis’s fault.

  11. thunderchunkyPA Says:

It’s OK Joe, they haven’t made winning a priority in years either.

  12. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

Bobo had one good return but Dizzy Dean blocked someone in the back.

    Gumpster Fire!

    Yup… TJ LOGAN also meh

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Logan is only doing kickoffs now…….sort of been like the Maytag repair man.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

LEADERSHIP on Special Teams is a BIG DEAL. Over the years we’ve had several who were VERY GOOD at their craft. Russell Shepard was another, as was Bobby Rainey, Jonathan Casillas, Adam Hayward, Dekoda Watson & Keith Tandy. All those guys made a name for themselves on Special Teams & excelled. Our young guys need to step up and do the same.

On looking at our first 3 games, SMB has gotten the most S/Ts snaps (72), followed by Cichy (58), Dare (58), Watson (56) & Auclair (54). Bucannon is in the mid-40s but everyone else is 30 or less. None of those guys strike me as being S/T LEADERS, at least based on S/T experience. But shortly Ryan Smith will be back, and he does have excellent S/Ts experience. Maybe that’ll help.

  16. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Time to start scouting below average special teamers as the Bucs will be picking high in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

  17. Figures Says:

Lmao here comes Ndog the dumbas s with the whiny I didn’t get my way 2 year old comment. Same comment on other posts lmao.

Every analyst every commentator every single person that is paid to analyze games and film are ALL WRONG. Ndog, Rod (as s) munch, Tmaxipad, and Lamarcus are the only ones that know football lol.

Lmao. Sometimes when you’re in the minority it’s YOU that is wrong lmao.

Ha hahahahahahahahahaha bunch of idiots lol.

Everyone laughs at you morons every single day.
I love it. I can always count on one of these sh it for brains idiots to provide a good laugh lol.

  18. Figures Says:

I have zero trust in Winston.

He will more than likely crap the bed a few more times this season.
Accuracy has ALWAYS been an issue lol. Hope for the best but not counting on it. I gave him props in the first half I was super happy he was playing well. But it’s not something you can count on from week to week.

Anyone who denies his accuracy and ball placement problems literally knows nothing about football and is just an FSU homer. Fact.

  19. Figures Says:

Seminoles in the toilet lmao hahahahahah pathetic

    Go Gators lol. Hahahahahahahahahaha

  20. adam from ny Says:

let’s all think about michael spurlock for a minute…for a feel good moment

  21. Clw JB Says:

Why is Mike Edwards playing gunner, probably because Dean is hurt still, need that speed on the edges keeping the gunners off our returner

with that said, BoBo is a NoNo as a PR

  22. Cgmaster27 Says:

Ahh figures is a gaytor fan. That explains everything, Jameis and the noles owned that a$$.

  23. Pittsshore Says:

Bobo is only year because he is JWs strip bar buddy and has been assigned to make sure JW does not get arrested while out

  24. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

How about the special teams is a joke. The captain of the special teams basically caused a punt to be blocked, no punt returner, blocked extra point, missed FGs and no kick return yards…I heard that this is the greatest coaching staff ever established what a crock

  25. Dom>Licht Says:

Kick and punt return in the NFL are a WASTE of time ! Every F in play block in the back or holding. I watch dozens of college games every weekend NEVER a F in block in the back penalty??????? SO is it not called in college or when players turn Pro do they turn stupid to that rule??

  26. Touchdown, Tampa Bay Says:

Bobo is boo boo. Why is he even wearing a jersey? Dude does absolutely nothing.

  27. Petty Officer Buc Says:

I can’t remember the last time the Bucs had a decent special teams.

  28. Nptbuc Says:

I have been saying since game 1 that we have a serious problem with our ST. Remember our first punt? Blocked! Punter under pressure almost every kick since. Punt coverage? Watch the game. Punt “returns” ? Watch the tape. We were taught in high school (54 years ago) IF YOU CAN READ A NAME OR NUMBERS ON THE BACK OF A JERSEY NEVER RAISE YOUR HANDS! Not brain surgery. Don’t have to understand any x’s Or O ‘s. Just be able to identify letters or see numbers. Pros with four year degrees can’t grasp that? Also, calls are often away from the play that makes it even more brain dead. Teams should start instituting fines maybe. Jeeze

  29. dmatt Says:

What’s up with Scotty Miller? Get him some PT to see what he can do. The Giants tightend Engram play as if he has a grudge against O.J. Howard being selected ahead of him in the 2017 draft. Howard n Brate didn’t play hungry, violent, n aggressive as if they really wanted to win the game. Brate should’ve fought harder to get the half yard or so for the first down, he gave up. No fight in him. Engram n DJones respectfully played the “next man up” role once Saquon got hurt. Even the no name wr for the Giants stepped up to the plate. Will someone explain the reason Jameis just dances in the pocket when no one is open after five seconds in the pocket…Hello, someone other than ur teammate is in the pocket. “Run Forest Run”. Com on man, five years in the league n the newbies QBs such as Giants DJones, Jags Minshew, Bills JAllen n others r out playing Winston. I’m trying to be patience n support Jameis but this is getting old. Please get MJ Stewart outa there he’s lost in space.

  30. Billy_45 Says:

Honestly, these pros would rather have a penalty than give up a bad tackle or HOPE they don’t get caught and a score happens.

Who knows maybe they are so starved for attention they just want their number called.

No explanation for a Special Teams that actually looks worse than ever.

Didn’t BA say it was a priority?

And it’s some of these guys ONLY job.

  31. Jaywill Says:

I know for a fact Jameis is being told not to run until the last second. Remember when we all praised him for running for the 1st down against Pittsburgh well he was told he missed a dude down field by running. Arians don’t want Winston running so that is why you see the indecisiveness in the pocket. Last year after benching he would just take off. This year he isn’t.

  32. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

BA has brought us his own version of complimentary football at its finest. Special teams sucks, Defense sucks, Offense sucks. Oh yeah, lets not leave out coaching…

  33. TOM Says:

I think the Bucs need to hire a few more coaches. As a matter of fact each player should have his own personal coach. Thats it more coaches. Problem solved.

  34. unbelievable Says:

Special teams has been abysmal so far this season in every phase.
