Confused By Sunday

September 24th, 2019

Questions.

There were a lot of reasons the Bucs lost Sunday to the Giants.

Clock management was not one of them.

But J.P. Peterson of Fan Stream Sports is wondering if the Bucs have another coach who has troubles with how to use a clock in the final minutes of a game.

Peterson believes, no matter what Bucco Bruce Arians may say, that gaffes late in games nearly have the Bucs at 0-3.

Joe gets Peterson’s point, but there are bigger fish to fry in this skillet than timeouts and a delay of game penalty. One is going backward seven yards — on purpose! — to set up a field goal.

The other would be why Arians suddenly took the ball out of the hands of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. Yet another question is why Arians didn’t try for a touchdown with all sorts of mismatches in his favor and time for a play or two before calling on a rookie kicker who was having a rotten day?

Grandpa Bruce pondering how soon he’ll retire again?? Can’t wait. He now realizes this isn’t the job he thought it was. Total hot garbage of a coaching job by him the past few weeks. He has never won anything as a HC why are all you sheep thinking he’s the savior?? He’s just here to pad his pension and keep Licht with a job.

So there is a GM who should have been fired last year. A QB who the Bucs should have moved on from at end of 2017. A HC “QB whisperer” who basically owns the GM and who allegedly is supposed to fix the QB (who probably can’t be fixed—“that’s just Jameis.”). But the HC clearly doesn’t trust the QB, and rightfully so. Sad as it is. Will Licht force Arians to open up the passing game and let Winston have more rope? No. He will let Arians live or die by that himself. Will Arians decide to do it on his own? Very good possibility we see that against the LA Rams. Will we see Winston make big plays mixed with awful decisions and turnovers? Probably. This cycle will continue. Perhaps three is little work with on Winston afterall, and it was actually Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer who made Arians look good, not the other way around. We may have Dirk Arians or Bruce Koetter here. Dump them all.

    3-13.

  5. TDTB Says:

What happened at the end of the game in week 1 is exactly why BA took the delay of game and didn’t try to score. It’s a very clear sign that he does not trust JW.

  6. Johnny Says:

I believe if the Bucs had simply used all 40 seconds of the play clock on every play in the second half, they would have won the game. I’m sure this sounds crazy but I think I can prove it, if I decide I wanna go to that much trouble!

  7. BucHead588 Says:

Idc what anyone says Bucs did enough to win Sunday An Should have I feel like We are the Only team in the League that doesn’t win that game it’s crazy our Kickers have been Cursed the same with our DEs last year JPP broke that curse now we’re waiting for Kicking curse to end Man I heard JPP was working out at The Bucs Facilitates which would be Huge imagine him an Shaq man I’m really getting excited for his return Bucs needed that win before this big Road Schedule coming up

  8. hizzieallen Says:

Before the game, I thought here’s the chance to show we’ve turned a corner. Let’s go out and show we can stop a rookie QB. We all see how that turned out. Still we were in a position to win. For the life of me I will never understand not taking a shot at the end zone. Evans or OJ should have gotten a chance. You don’t put a kicker on the field unless you absolutely have to. We weren’t there yet. They may have crushed what was left of that kid’s confidence.

That one play tells you everything you need to know about what the coaches REALLY thinks about Jameis. This team has one of the best receiving corps in the NFL. You are supposed to put the ball in the hands of your best players.

    No trust in Jameis.

  11. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

It’s time for another Arians “Confidence Poll” Joe…..

  12. Pete I Says:

The kicker had a rotten day? He had a blocked XPT is that only on him? Who was blocking the dude who swatted the ball?

He was 4-4 on FG’s prior to the miss. 4 for 5 on FG’s isn’t a rotten day.

He missed an XPT – and the FG that mattered so he let everyone down.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

I know that this will come as a shocking revelation to all the ‘Monday Morning QBs’ and media ‘Talking Heads’, but head coaches get paid to make decisions. The buck stops there (no, not The Bucs stop there). For reasons that he’s probably not gonna share with us, BA’s gut instinct told him that going for the FG at the end gave us the best chance of winning. And he did what he thought was most helpful to give Matt Gay the best opportunity to make that kick.

Matt Gay had made FOUR other FGs Sunday, and missed NONE. FOUR straight FGs. He was hot; he was kicking well, as in 100% on the day. Jameis was also having a good day … 23-of-37 (62%) with 3 TDs & 1 INT. But we were 4-for-14 (29%) on 3rd down conversions on the day (it was 3rd down after all), and Jameis does have a history of, shall we say, making faux pas at the wrong time.

BA made a HCing decision: go for the FG. It didn’t work out. Sucks, since we lost the game. THAT’S on our kicker, he missed the friggin kick. Had he made it, he’d be a hero and BA would be a genius. But could all the talking heads PLEASE stop second-guessing, and third-guessing and fourth-guessing every decision?

  14. Hodad Says:

When you use the 39th pick in the draft for a corner from nowhere, Bunt Cake, is it any wonder we can’t cover anybody yesterday? How about the slow midget from FL in the first round? How about drafting a kicker in the second round who was out of football after two years. How about drafting another kicker who missed on three attempts when you already had a capable kicker in Santos? You can’t win games with a GM who’s as dumb as a box of rocks. America’s QB is another Licht bust. They took the ball out of his hands because of what he did with it in the second half, no TD’s, and one pick. They didn’t trust him because they saw what he did against the 49ers with a chance to bring his team from behind for the win he threw a pick six the other way on the first play with 2 minutes left. As long as Licht’s drafting, and picking coaches we will continue to suck.

  15. down in the dirt doug Says:

BA—you are sending a clear message to Jameis that you do not trust him.It seems that you wish to go to the front office and turn the team over to an assistant coach next year.TAKE THE CHAINS OFF OF JAMEIS AND LET HIM SINK OR SWIMM.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m not quite sure any coach is going for a TD when he has a chip shot FG……I do agree that backing up 7 yards didn’t make any sense…but I’m not the coach. I think spiking the ball, running to pick up a couple of more yards and calling the time out was right.

And, Joe…..all this about throwing for the TD is simply a foolish wish wanting to prop up “America’s QB”……can’t you understand that he trusted Gay more than Winston…..but now….maybe not.

  17. LJS4th Says:

Well no confusion with the best team in Tampa…the Lightning! Signed one of their best and young players and it looks like they are going to have a great team again! Good GM, Great owner and good drafting is the reason why!!! I will be spending my time going to Lightning games as I gave up my Bucs season tickets for Lightning season tickets!! After Sunday’s horrible game I am glad to say Hockey is Back!!!! I am done with the Yucs!

  18. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

“…why Arians suddenly took the ball out of the hands of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston…”.

With all the negative things that happened during this game, its a big positive we can say the coaches should have kept the ball in JW’s hands!

  19. K_bassuka Says:

We shouldn’t have been in that predicament if the can’t miss talent of a kicker would’ve made his extra points. That falls completely on the kicker and dumb GM for not learning from his mistakes and drafting another kicker.

  20. Bob in Valrico Says:

Here is a possible reason why they took the ball out of Jameis hands at the end of the game.He is only completing 38.5 % of his passes in the red zone.

So far his splits by quarter show a downward trend
    1 st quarter rating 111.2 %

    2 nd quarter rating 110 %

    3 rd quarter rating 75 %

    4 th quarter rating 41 %

Every good team has to rely on their run game in the second half a good amount. Can we mix it up better on first and second down and try for a chunk a chunk, maybe.
on first and second down ,maybe. But at the end of the day Jameis must convert on third down in the second half to maintain posession more and create more scoring opportunities long before the teams’ final drive.

  21. Bob in Valrico Says:

    edit: chunk play

  22. lambchop Says:

    @Defense Rules,

I kind of agree with you. But, ultimately, you draft a #1 QB to step up in big moments. JW played extremely well and the ball should have been in his hands to make or break the deciding score. You have to forget about what happened before and take each play on its own. We have no backup QB that can play better than #3 at this point, so you gotta just rip it and go with it. How is this team going to build his confidence from the debacle of the Koetter fizzle? You are telling your team that you don’t trust your QB. If that’s the case, then you better find his replacement ASAP.

What if the FG was blocked again? What if JW turned the ball over? I mean it’s endless: the what ifs. Is it less salty that Matt Gay missed the FG rather than Winston turning the ball over? I keep going back and forth on whether the FG was the right decision, but there was definitely time for other plays before leaving the game up to the kicker.

This would never have happened if the Bucs kept the pedal to the metal the entire 60 minutes.

  23. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

Defense Rules, you nailed it! Gay missed a FG that a high school kicker should make. Period.

  24. Pittsshore Says:

He is 100% correct. Reminds me of the time we had to take the cell phone away from gramps when he became a little delirious in his old age. We may need to do the same with Bruce McGoos head set

  25. Pickgrin Says:

Once Big Mike caught the final long pass down to the 10 yard line – setting up for a short field goal was the ONLY play. Every single head coach in this league would have made the exact same decision.

You go with the odds in that situation. Just like poker.

Its like correctly putting your opponent – who just bet all in after the turn – on a pair of Aces when you are holding 3 Kings. He’s got 2 outs on the river. A 5% chance…

You call with confidence. Its a given that you call with a 95% chance to win.

Are you mad at yourself when that Ace on the river comes? You shouldn’t be. You made the right decision. But try telling that to your wife when you come home having lost 1/2 of the rent money to a “bad beat”….

If it hasn’t dawned on you yet – most of you “fans” are acting like the wife in this scenario…..

  26. Locked In Says:

He should have had Jameis run backwards 20 more yards to make it a 55 yarder. Gay would have made that one.

  27. Pewter power Says:

Having a delay of game penalty is the problem so are blocked kicks, maybe these special teams coaches wouldn’t have a job if not for BA. I think this is being overblown a bit because bottom line rookie or not gotta make that kick

  28. Defense Rules Says:

Pickgrin … “But try telling that to your wife when you come home having lost 1/2 of the rent money to a “bad beat.” Pickgrin, you sound like a man talking from experience. THAT’S scary. 1/2 the rent money? Riverboat Ron would’ve bet the whole house.

  29. Siege the Bay Says:

so if we took another shot in a stacked redzone and Jameis throws an int, everyone would be saying our coach is an idiot for not taking the easy field goal to win the game. It’s called risk management. Of course you set up an easy fg to win it. Our sorry kicker didn’t do his job. Period

  30. Buc1987 Says:

    Tampabaybucfan Says:

“I’m not quite sure any coach is going for a TD when he has a chip shot FG”

That’s exactly where I’m at. No where near the “they didn’t trust Winston” with 13 seconds left crowd. Bill Bellichick would have sent Brady to the sidelines and trotted out his kicker YOU and everyone know this except a select few idiots on this site.

  31. BA FAN Says:

Yes we have a Great Defense but we leaned on them too long in this game. Now when our young DBs all have more experience and we can put fresh DBs, Safeties, and LBs on the field, then OK, but we are not there yet. Finally, in the first half our Offense started catching up with our Defense. In that case, we should not have gone into trying to run out the time with our running game at the start of the second half. I would be for that the second half of the fourth quarter only. We should have kept Jameis in rhythm in the second half until their Defense proved they could stop it. BA simply played the odds at the end of the game as any other good HC would have. I understand we cut our most reliable short distance PK because of our bad need for money, but in hind sight, which is always twenty twenty, we should have kept two PKs and kept only two QBs on our roster. One for short kicks and one for long kicks. I still Trust BA!

  32. Buccfan37 Says:

Yeah the game had a Bucs special ending. BA and TB frazzled at NY Jones seeming unstoppable. Besides the kicking gaff the play I keep seeing in my mind is the parting of the Buc sea to allow that QB a run up the middle for a TD with nobody Buc in sight.

  33. Allbuccedup Says:

BA or BS we are slowly finding out. Did you ever why the Giants decided to wait to they played the Bucs to start their rookie QB? Now we know why. HAHAHAHA!

  35. Dapostman Says:

I’m confused by how an NFL defense on their home field can give up 4 drives of 75+ yards for TD’s by a rookie making his first NFL start.

  36. Mike Johnson Says:

I see this team putting Arians back on the unhealthy list or in the hospital.. He bit off quite a load taking over these sad sacks. Hope he makes it thru in one piece.

  37. lambchop Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan and @Buc1987,

Joe is talking about taking a FG with 6 something minutes left in the game. Not at the end of the game.

  38. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Still paying a decade later for firing Gruden! Morris, Schiano, Smith, Koetter, Arians???!!!! Gruden did the impossible by giving us a trophy and making us consistently relevant. Now the Glazer boys in their infinite wisdom are on their 5th coach and our so called “home” is consistently filled with opposing fans who disparage our own fan base because of our consistent irrelevance! I will always be a Buccaneer fan but the Glazers continue to embarrass our community!

  39. Rod Munch Says:

Taking the ball out of Winston’s hand and trying to run out the clock with 9 mins remaining was dumb when you’re only up by 3 points.

However saying we need to try to throw and get a TD instead of kicking a 29 yard FG is just a stupid hill to die on. It’s literally what no team in the NFL does, and lets say you even get the TD, you’re giving the Giants the ball back and they always have a chance with a hail mary. It’s just a dumb thing to keep saying.

  40. Losinghope Says:

Open ur eyes Joe… BA DOESNT TRUST JAYMISS!!! And I don’t blame him

  41. Losinghope Says:

So us fans are “idiots ” Joe? Yea we’re the idiots but ur still calling a 5thyr disappointing qb America’s qb. GTFOH! AND FYI, maybe belichick woulda went for the fg, maybe not. But its not a no brainer like u suggest when u got a rookie kicker that’s missing extra points, AND there’s 13secs left. Had we had a TRUE allpro qb (not an alternate that HABITUALLY turns the ball over) he likely woulda taken at least one shot at the endzone. Idiot
