Arians Says “Probably Should Have Kicked The Field Goal,” Explains Reasoning

September 8th, 2019

No biscuit

At the 49ers’ 2 yard line with 13 minutes remaining in today’s loss to the 49ers, the Bucs had a fourth down and passed on an easy field goal that would have brought the Bucs to within three points of San Francisco.

Instead, they went for it and threw incomplete. Bruce Arians explained how he — and the players –screwed up.

“I go for it on fourth down; I probably should have kicked the field goal ad got it into a three point game but I trusted us,” Arians told the Buccaneers Radio Network. “The play was there. I think [the 49ers] actually busted the coverage and surprised us and we don’t make the completion.”

Arians went on to say Cameron Brate was the first option and Chris Godwin was the third option. Godwin “came clean” and “should have stopped,” Godwin said. “He kept running and Jameis was ready to throw it to him and then threw it too late and the backside safety makes a play on it.”

To sum it up, Arians trusted his offense and they weren’t worthy of his trust.

No biscuit.

No victory.

I’m beginning to wonder if this was the right hire offensively.

  2. Pittsshore Says:

Second guessing is for losers. Common sense would have told you to not out the ball in Apples McGoos hands

  3. Pittsshore Says:

Arians is here for the check dummies.

Always a good idea to trust the Soiled Messiah!

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will not win with Winston at QB. They have to get rid of that guy!! They have to just forget the fact that he was the first pick. They must give someone else a chance it is what it is at this point any other QB wins that game for there team. No nice way to put it he just flat out suck!!!!

  7. Pepsi Says:

First game under the insanely hyped Arians offense – under 200 yards passing and 4 total picks, only 28 yards for Evans, 30 yards for Howard, 8 yards for Brate. And overrate looked uncomfortable and bland. This was a big regression from the koetter and monken let offense. Hate to say it

  8. Pepsi Says:

    3* total picks

  9. Pelbuc61 Says:

Same old undisciplined Bucs. Special teams and offense were horrendous. JW cannot be coached! He is a turnover machine disguised as a football player. He also can’t throw the long ball if his life depended on it. Is the Clemson QB eligible for next year’s draft?

  10. Anonymous Says:

They can’t and won’t win with Winston!!! It is time to cut bate!!

  11. Jean Lafitte Says:

OJ was open toward the corner. A lofted toss to the corner and OJ had it.

  12. gotbbucs Says:

Dont care anymore, fella. Just go cash your check and figure out a new way to explain it away for next week.
We’re all used to it, trust me. Those of us that have been around for a while will sleep just fine tonight.

  13. Tampa Bay Bucs love Says:

We can’t and we won’t win with Winston he has to go now! Play another QB he is very very bad.. I tried to support him but it is what it is…

  14. theodore Says:

Forgive me lord for what I’m about to say, but the Bucs should have ran it.

  15. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Stop defending Jaboo Brucie

    JAMEIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Jean Lafitte Says:

instead America’s Quarterback threw it into a crowd

  17. Tye Says:

‘Arians trusted his offense’ … He learned the hard way that to do so is a bad idea… Until you get a dependable qb, you will see more of the same..

  18. Wesley Says:

To be clear I was never in favor of hiring Arians.

  19. NPRSageBoy Says:

    Arians mistake was trusting JayMiss

  20. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Relax People, there are tons of Franchise quarterbacks that take more than 5 years to fully develop.
Poor Arians. Winston will single handily ruin his self appointed “QB whisperer” moniker.

Only positive is the defense isn’t an embarrassment like last year, even if Devin White is invisible.

  21. BucEmUp Says:

Arians screwed up hiring leftwhich to have total control of the offense. First they hire Arians, then we find out Leftwhich is going to call the plays then just the other day we find out Arians isnt even part of outtinf together the game plans and everything is 100% in Byrons hands.

I am.with ira what he said on todays pregame. We paid for Arians and we.want Arians calling the plays. Jameis was under constant pressure today and not once was an adjustment made.on offense other than rojo getting all the carries in the 4th quarter..Despite The oline getting man handled, byron continued to call plays with five step drops attempting to push the ball down field..Minimal.rb screens and not one single slant route in four quarters. I called this from the start. There is no reason for the offense to regress with the same roster other than playcaller

  22. Snook Says:

Week 1 overreactions around the league are the best.

  23. Figures Says:

    Hello

    Earth to ROD, NDOG

Silence. Hope both of you stay gone all season.

Crawl under your rocks and suck your bit ch as s thumbs

  24. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I wish we had a real football team with a real Franchise QB to root for instead of Jaymiss……

  25. passthebuc Says:

The HC has no blame in this loss. You cannot second guess the decision as both options were acceptable. What was not acceptable from my perspective is allowing JW to play after 3 minutes had gone in the 2nd half. It is ok though, I will watch the Rays and the Lightening plus college football. I just will no longer waste my time with JW. at the helm.

  26. BA just WHISPERED Jameis SUCKS! Says:

Probably should have benched your QB ! It’s not coaching !

  27. Zzbuc Says:

Things are so evident!!Even Steve Wonder can see it!!
We probably played against without counting the Dolphins the worst team in the NFL and we lost!!!
Are we gonna blame Koetter now?
Remembre when he benched JW because he sucked?
    Well he sucks!!!
Wich Will be the excuses now?
Sooner or later we need to grow up!!
JW is not an elite qb!!!!

  28. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Joe

    STOP WITH “AMERICA’S QB” too

    IT’S OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. Rayjay1122 Says:

Kicking the FG would not have changed the outcome because America’s Pitcher was pretending to be a QB.

  30. Petty Officer Buc Says:

As big as a dumpster fire Oakland is right now, at least Gruden can say he is in control of his team.

Arians is just collecting paychecks and providing soundbites to the media while Leftwich and Bowles run the show.

  31. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    Jameis was too late

    Story of his career

  32. Jeagan1999 Says:

NEVER take points off the board. Even rookie coaches know that…..Arians should have.

In other news, the Jameis Winston experiment is over. He actually looks worse than he did last year. Time to start scouting the kid from Oregon or Georgia, and looking for a new General Manager…Licht needs to go too.

  33. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Look

    I like Brucie……..I really do

……….but Jameis is a coach killa

don’t let em kill ya rep Brucie!!!!!!!!!!!!

Koetter knew it all too well

  34. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    I want Trevor Lawrence

  35. Figures Says:

Paid for Bruce arians got Leftwich lol.

    What a scam.

  36. BA just WHISPERED Jameis SUCKS! Says:

This may have been our most winnable game. Could be a looooooong season! Still coaching right Jameis apologists???

  37. passthebuc Says:

I would watch Thursday’s game but there is a re-run of a movie from 1919.

  38. Petty Officer Buc Says:

D-Jax had an excellent game today with “young” quarterback Carson Wentz btw. It’s all about Chemistry though, right guys?

  39. Pete I Says:

    21-34 America’s QB

0-1 No Biscuit and his Golf Cart

  40. Big Z Says:

What abot Dot? He single handedly took 2 TDs off the board. Cmon. Poor organization all around.. Dot wont make 6 games..nor should he but hey SMB pick paid off. Draft straight OLINE next year to protect Lawrence. Dont do our next QB like JW.

  41. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Why watch thursday night just to get disappointed again????

  42. Hodad Says:

If you use a first round pick on a T.E. to stay in, and block, then you should’ve used the pick on an O linemen. We are stacked at T.E. right now, and a lot of us have been calling for trading Brate. Better we trade O.J. before he flames out, or gets injured. Our rookie leading receiver in preseason Hudson, has better hands, and Auclair is a better blocker. Besides, when Griffin replaces Jameis this year, him, and Hudson already are on the same page.

  43. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Trade Jameis to Miami for 3rd & 5th and Fitzpatrick…….

    Brilliant?????

  44. Rayjay1122 Says:

Winston is ultra competitive. Jimmy G threw a pick 6 so Winston had to outdo him by throwing 2 pick 6’s.

  45. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

I feel a Fred Sanford/Jeff Tedford faux heart attack coming on. And I wouldn’t blame him a bit.

  46. JimmyJack Says:

It doesn’t matter. By scoring zero freaking point taken in the entire first half, Again!!!, we were only going to win that game if we could do it on the last possession.

We got the last possession and it lasted one freaking play. Our QB was awful today and we never had a chance at winning with him under center. At this point it is clear that Winston is holding the team back. He is just a bad QB.

  47. Bucamania Says:

The whole Leftwich offense looked sloppy and unimaginative. I expected better.

  48. wantstastayabuc Says:

wish we still had the beard. Yes I know that he had his clock cleaned today, but he was fun to cheer for.

  49. Blow the whole thing up Says:

QB whisperer my arse!! Fire Licht Fire Bruce the fake and make the Glazers sell the team and then we might stand a chance to be good again.

  50. Oneilbucs Says:

Oj Howard is not good eather. He fumbled and caused a interception the ball hit him right in his hands. So I don’t want to here about OJ Howard no more on how good he is.

  51. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

glazers and dummy licht should never have hired arians if he is just going to sip arnold palmers & watch nfl good morning, this is bs to the bucs fans

  52. Adrnagy Says:

Turnaround starts today watch. We will win division and go to playoff. Flying out from LA to go watch my bucs vs. giants.

  53. Oneilbucs Says:

Man Fiz suck. I rather wait to see how the college season turns out with quarterbacks. The play calling was trash the first half. All those bunch wr sets and all of the wr going the same way do not work. But at least we have a running back now. No more Barber Please!!!!

  54. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    put down the crack

  55. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Adrnagy

    don’t be a crack head

  56. Oneilbucs Says:

And it was still just 1 game. Matt Ryan looked bad as well and I know ain’t no body going to blame him. But still go bucs!!!!

  57. The Mamba Says:

Well, Winston did his usual thing and Devin White looks to be a wasted pick. Most of you have been blaming coaching and Winston for the last few years. It’s clear to me that Winston is the common denominator. He’ll be gone next year, so here’s to the future without you Winston 🍻

    NO MORE EXCUSES!!!

    Go Bucs!

  58. The Mamba Says:

    Put in Ryan Griffin

  59. Coburn Says:

Meh it is what it is. I might have went for it too. Chances are pretty high you make it that close to goal line and when they turned it over it had them pinn d right against their own goal line. Reality is if they make it the other team has much better field position and then your drive after that is much longer so no guarantee the next drive still results in a field goal. End of the day hardly the reason they lost. Jameis still would have blown it the way he was playing. Don’t blame Arians or leftwich other than trying to sell Jameis. Can’t fix stupid. Guy lacks it between the ears. Sick of hearing people talk about his supposed intelligence… i,shouldn’t get worked up and personally insult someone over s game.. just tired of losing and rest of team looks like it’s starting to come together…throws so many picks and yet they are somehow never his fault

  60. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Right on JimmyJack
If Jameis wasn’t a no 1 pick or making $20 million would he still be playing?
He doesn’t win in the NFL – that is the reality.
The last pick 6 is what his career is about -with the game on the line, he is terrible

  61. Greg Says:

From what we hear JW is intelligent and and uber hard worker. However his decision making is pop warner ish. How many years of this? Is there any more proof needed? A franchise killer and I so much wanted him to succeed. Brutal as you don’t want to tank the season but we need a new leader.

  62. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Trevor Lawrence

  63. Gman Says:

Ya think….smh…you risked it and hence, no damn biscuit.

  64. doctor_berto Says:

Trevor Lawrence isn’t eligible this year.

  65. Jmarkbuc Says:

    BA spewing BS

  66. Pittsshore Says:

HoDad: how you feel now dummy. Give HOMom a hug for me.

  67. Old School Athlete Says:

I was ok with BA going for it. I was not ok with Dotson dancing and both ends of the line collapsing in a blink. Now my biggest question is are they gonna wait until we are mathematically eliminated before Griffin gets a chance.

  68. Buccfan37 Says:

Every Buc fan will be back to feed their Buc addiction in 4 short days.

  69. unbelievable Says:

    Jameis throwing it too late?

    Nah, doesn’t sound like him…

  70. Jmarkbuc Says:

I’m not sure that BA realizes that real Buc Fans know BS when we hear it, and we don’t wait a long time to tell coaches that they are full of it.

He should end this tap dance and be straight with players and fans.

Know one knows bad coaching like buc fans, he’s insulting our intelligence and embarrassing himself in the process.

Bottom line is if JW wasn’t as slow as molasses in seeing things develop, we had a TD right there.

  71. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Byron was going to kick…then Arians jumped in and even told him what play to run. He should have trusted his OC there.
