Tale Of Two Pass Rushes

August 9th, 2019

Play No. 2 for the Buccaneers defense tonight featured Vernon Hargreaves getting torched on a 49-yard connection between immortal Steelers gunslinger Josh Dobbs and wide receiver James Washington.

It was as if the ghost of pass rushes past came back to haunt the Bucs.

The four-man rush with Noah Spence off the right edge had nothing and somehow Hargreaves let his man get way behind him.

Yeah, it happens; it’s not supposed to, certainly not to start a game.

But what really struck Joe is how the Bucs came back two plays later and rolled out a blitz look Joe hadn’t seen in Tampa for a while. Speed was on display. Rookie linebacker savior Devin White darted in, beat his man and there was Will Gholston to clean up while blitzing Deone Bucannon finished off Dobbs for an eight-yard loss.

White defended the ensuing 3rd-and-12 pass and the Steelers punted.

It was as if the old Bucs defense was swallowed up by the new Bucs defense. Joe felt a surge of hope before the Steelers cleared out their top offensive linemen.

Todd Bowles can’t blitz on every play, but Joe suspects he certainly could set some sort of new blitz-percentage record this season.

It was nice to see Spence getting pressure now if he can learn to finish that would be awesome

  2. Bobbo Says:

That didn’t look like VH3 blew that one, looked like Whitehead hung him out to dry and VH3 tried to catch up. Too bad his pick got called back

  3. LongSeason Says:

Hargreaves needs to be flat out released. He sucks bigger than any DB we have ever had. He’s a waste.

The defense doesn’t look any better. When a GM doesn’t know how to draft then he needs to be fired too. Please get rid of Jason Licht. He sucks, too.

  4. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Seemed like VH3 was expecting help over the top, can’t really blame him for that Joe.

Joe do you watch the All 22 tape of games?

  5. Greg A Says:

    Everybody misses on 1 play

  6. Greg Says:

Hargraves made some good plays including an interception that was called back because of a Spence penalty. I guess Joe Florida State fan forgot that while he was staring at Jameis with lustfull eyes.

Long season wow ready to throw in the towel in preseason game one. Did we watch the same game he got beat deep on first play but also had a pick and played great after that one play. Are first string offense went right down the field. The running backs had big holes to run through. And we had what 3-4 screen passes on the first drive about as many as last year all season. The offense looked great. And the defense was getting pressure. Looked pretty good from my eyes. If we released heargraves he wouldn’t make it past the first Waiver wore team.

  8. LongSeason Says:

Jameis is going to throw for 5k this year as Bucs will be playing ‘ketchup’ all season long.

Gonna be a two year build for defense.

  9. MadMax Says:

6th rounder LB Ulysees Gilbert, looking like THE defensive steal of the draft….stealers got lucky!!! Just wanted to point that out…smh.

  10. JimmyJack Says:

Umm Joe maybe rewatch that play cause you left out a major detail. Not sure who it was but we forced a fumble on that play………Unsure exactly what the call was on the field but the ball was defiently out and defientally a fumble.

We didn’t convert the turnover but defientally showcased big play ability on defense tonight.

Love the anology of the old Bucs defense being swallowed by this new one.

    Amen brotha!!

Welcome to the new Era of Bucs football!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!?

    Joe

    That wasn’t on VHG….that was on Whitehead….

    Take those FSU haterblockers off…..

    GO BUCS

Yikes…this team blows. I have never heard of Josh Dobbs. <>

  13. cmurda Says:

It would also be fair to say that VH3 showed some serious poise to bounce back only a couple plays after being beaten to have great coverage and made a sweet pick. Only to have it called back on a sheisty hands to the face call.

  14. Cobraboy Says:

    Spence played well.

The D offers hope, lots of motion and lots of flying around.

Not sure what game you people were watching. Sad buc fans on this site, all you need to know about this game is key guys didnt play on both sides and obvious contributors looked good (1st & 2nd string). I came away thinking the bottom of the roster is garbage, don’t know how morons come on this page and say this team will suck because iof players the no names behind our backup guys.

  16. Jeffbuc Says:

Every year same thing fans get all bent out of shape from a glorified scrimmage. First team on first team we looked great. Biggest disappointment from game was bunting. I thought he would shine tonight. He looked lost at times. But other than that it was a great first showing for the 2019 bucs in my eyes. Ronald Jones wins player of the game to me. He looked better tonight than his whole highlight real from last year. And Peyton barber has some pep in his step. He looked a lot faster tonight. He is like emit Smith. Not going to break long runs but is always going to run hard and fall forward. And Perriman looks like he will have some hige plays for us. When jameis let the ball go the defender was on his hip. Then he put into another gear and when the ball landed beyond him he was 5 feet past the defender. If they get there timing down this could be a special connection. I am going to take him in my drafts for sure because he is going to have several 100 plus yard 2 td type games on 3 catches. The offense looked crisp and I couldn’t predict the play. Which every buc fan has been about 90% right about predicting the play the last ten years.

Why does Whoopi Goldberg always look so pissed in that photo?

  18. tmaxcon Says:

Vh3bust excuses flowing lol people give up on the little fella he’s a pop Warner coach or 7 eleven clerk impersonating a football player…. you cant fix short, slow, stupid, and fragile put the playbook down little guy and start learning all the cigarette brands and varitions your future employer offers

  19. tmaxcon Says:

He’s too small for beer trucks and ups

  20. tmaxcon Says:

It’s never vh3bust fault always someone else lol you people are precious thanks for the laughs

  21. dmatt Says:

Will someone please explain why is Ryan Smith still on this team. He can barely cover 3rd n 4th string receivers. I give him credit on ST punt coverage but other than that he is once again awful at playing in the secondary. Will Gholston is the same player since b n drafted, slow reaction n no pressure. Isaiah “run into the wall” Johnson is a dud. LT #75 will get the QB killed. There’s a reason Ryan Griffin has never played in a regular season game. He is ur typical deer in the headlight person. He play scared. Spencer Schnell is a diamond in the rough, the dude knows how to get open n played lights out under pressure. Winston n the first string will set league records this year.

  22. Greg A Says:

Here’s a little secret guys joe doesn’t like getting called out

[You can call out Joe all you like. Get personal with one of the Joes, that’s a Crime Against Joe and Joe then clicks on the Goodbye Button, especially a guy that uses two different handles (ahem). — Joe]

  23. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

VHIII beat out both rookie CB this training camp. Everyone get beat in a game, this time the safety blew their assignment. He’ll be fine.

  24. OBP Says:

That play was mostly Whitehead’s fault for biting on an underneath route instead of giving Vernon help over the top, so I’ll give VH3 a pass for it.

  25. IsrBuc Says:

Ryan smith was the best db imo

  26. Red86 Says:

That 34 defense was very impressive. I’m liking the great plays on the run and pass. I hope they stay healthy and keep up the great work.

  27. allhailJPP Says:

If you are blaming VH3.. you dont know football. go find another hobby

  28. BucsFan727 Says:

Ya he got burnt. But atleaat he was in position to knock the ball out after some impressive make up speed. He looked alot better than always playing 10yards off the line. Defence will be competitive this year.
