No Surgery For Vea; Extended Absence Expected

August 9th, 2019

MRI results are in.

[UPDATE: 1:57 p.m.] Bucs fans can breathe easier.

Bucs defensive lineman Vita Vea will not need surgery on his right knee. That’s the word from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Vita went down in practice Tuesday while working against guard Alex Cappa and he’s had multiple tests of the knee.

Now the missed game time is unclear. Speculation going around was that if Vea did not need surgery he could miss a month. Again, that is just throwing something against the wall.

The good news is Vea won’t go under the knife. Now we know what Bucco Bruce Arians suggested when he said initial tests did not seem severe.

[UPDATE: 1:57 p.m.] Jenna Laine of ESPN reports Vea has a sprained LCL and could miss up to eight weeks.

Not perfect, but much better than what could have been. Next man up.

  2. Buczilla Says:

    Whew.

  3. LordCornelius Says:

    THANK YOU FOOTBALL GODS

Don’t rush him back. Make sure he’s 100%. Hopefully new scheme creativity and the lack of game film on new Bucs 2019 can give us an advantage early.

    GO BUCS

  4. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Definitely no need to rush him back and then have him ending up like Kevin Durant and then the guy will be gone for parts of 2 years

  5. tmaxcon Says:

poor vea now he gets to suffer through another basement title run in tampa.

  6. NOSBOS Says:

Stay in the hot tub during your time off Big fella, get ya body back some. Kinda like that month before the National Championship game every year. You,LVD and JPP are major components. Looking forward to seeing you and the other two Beastie Boys Suh and JPP week 1.

  7. NOSBOS Says:

Dusty you slow, most of these injuries are smoke and mirrors. KD will play next season. Bank on that.

  8. SteveK Says:

    Get well soon big man!

Watching you maul dudes at the line of scrimmage on Sundays brings me joy.

  9. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Fingers crossed…the Bucs have not have much luck recently with the “no surgery” gamble/decision

  10. ChanEpic Says:

Glad he’s OK. But we’re entering “injury prone” territory with this man. Two seasons, and two pre-season multi-game injuries. I’m scared and relieved at the same time.

  11. SteveK Says:

Durant is not playing next year. He ruptured his Achilles. He should be given a medical redshirt to fully heal.

Durant is too good to rush back for a few games at the end of the season. Let him get strong, rest, and build his confidence in his body back up.

I would doubt he plays next year, NosBos.

  12. JimmyJack Says:

I am on Cloud 9 and I am feeling fine…….Im so happy I just did a jig!!

  13. OneBuc55 Says:

    Nice…

  14. Lubby Smith Says:

Sounds exactly like last year when he missed preseason with a non-serious injury but needed 3/4ths of the season to return to form.

    Sapp may have been right.

  15. Sarasot Garey Says:

    Thank God

  16. allhailJPP Says:

  17. bobbo Says:

Honestly I’d rather him miss 49s and be ready for Thursday Carolina game

  18. 813bucboi Says:

    CHAN

a buddy of mines said the same thing….

im not willing to go that far…

if you think he’s injury prone, you’ll have to give OJ that description as well….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  19. JimmyJack Says:

I heard them chime in on the radio on my way home from work that they had an update. As soon as they said it my heart sunk and I prepared to turn for the liquor store, fearing the worse.

I thought it would be another restless night that only a bottle of Jack could cure……..Now my heart is a flutter awaiting some Bucs and beer this evening followed by sweet sweet dream of Vea and Suh dancing in my head!!!!!

    GOOOO BUCS!!!!!

  20. DB55 Says:

Dude is not built for this heat.

  21. T REX Says:

    Saw 6-8 weeks

  22. DB55 Says:

    This roster is pathetic.

  23. NOSBOS Says:

SteveK you one of these people believe these folks actually went to something called a moon right??? You believe that’s a rock out there in so called outer space. Is actually a hologram but that’s neither here nor there. As far as KD goes we’ll see next season broski, and trust me ima remember this date.

  24. Sydney Says:

So, best case scenario the Bucs will be 1-3/0-4 heading into a big loss in New Orleans.

    Exciting stuff.

  25. JimmyJack Says:

DB55 go on one of the many negative articles with that nonsense.

This page is intended for celebration and jubilance.

Not cool to rain on Our parade bro.

  26. JimmyJack Says:

Sydney if you take a look at this schedule and don’t see 2-0 you’re just a horses ass.

Don’t even know who our third opponent is but we will absolutely cheap shot Carolina who has no ability to study us in that short week.

Then we got a long week to prepare for whoever we play next and we’ll coached teams almost always take that advantage. Whoever we get week three outta be nervous about that game if they know what’s good for em.

Or well just blind side em coming in with a head of steam at 2-0……either way.

  27. Greg Says:

Thank God! Its also noteworthy that Allen and Gholston gained weight to be more physical. Tonight will be a great test for both lines.

  28. Sarasot Garey Says:

So, is he hurt or injured?

  29. LordCornelius Says:

lol in JBF comment land heat causes LCL sprains

  30. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Pretty much Lord apparently heat is the main cause of LCL sprains. Who would have thunk.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Missing a month would put him coming back around September 9th.

That;s the start of the season. So I guess the four games missed will be the preseason games?

  32. Buccernutter Says:

    LMAO heat causes lcl sprains.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I mentioned the other day that I was concerned these northern coaches did not realize how important it is to keep players hydrated down here.

On the Bucs website, Arians was wearing a microphone and I heard a player being told it wasn’t time to get water yet. That;s not something to mess with.

Remember Mike Evans going down? Dehydration.

    Minor injuries? Dehydration.

Heat Stroke is a big concern here.

  34. JimmyJack Says:

Greg cool stuff…….I defientally think Allen could be a .uch bigger factor in Bowles defense opposed to Smitty’s.

I can’t wait to see this defense live and learn more about it. From what I can gather our DL will be asked to play a more physical game in this system………It won’t be about just getting to the QB at any costs, there will be more of a focus on pushing and throwing bodies and creating havoc around the pocket for our DL…….allowing backers and blitzers to swarm in this style seems to fit Allen really well…….I wanna say Gholston too but he has disappointed for too many years on end to have much hope for. I have seen him play violent football before. Opening Day 2017 was maybe his best game ever but haven’t saw him come close since. 31 games later it’s really hard to believe he could ever do it consistently.

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

My first prediction of the year: Fans here will be 80% negative in the game day thread tonight.

    Moderation Joe?

  38. CHRIS Says:

why would he be out he 4 preseason games and almost 4 weeks of the regular season if it wasn’t something serious ? if walks and talks like a duck it probably is.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

Dehydration leading to heat stroke is almost nearly a wife’s tail. It’s actually extremely rare that dehydration is a leading cause of heat stroke. Much more prevelant causes include diet, lack of sleep, drug/alcohol use, stress & prolonged exposure………dehydration is a very rare cause of heat stroke & when it is a cause it’s typically from severe dehydration………..Not because I’m thirsty from my water break half hour ago.

  46. Br luceletdadogsloose Says:

Guys , I’m stuck here in Canton Ohio and had herd that the bucs were doing free live streaming of the pre season games and was hoping yall can help me…can my cell phone work ? Do I have to download anything onto my cell phone ? Or can I simply click on the game at buccaneers.com ? Does anyone know the best or easiest way to watch tonight without having NFL Network ? Thanks

  47. macabee Says:

Jenna Laine went on to add – “Typically, it would take 6 to 8 weeks recovery, but [his] injury is so that he could be back 4 to 5 weeks,” the source said, leaving the door open for Vea’s possible return as early as the regular-season opener against San Francisco on Sept. 8.

  48. Greg Says:

JimmyJack I completely agree with you in regards to Golston but one reason for optimism is that he has been more valuable when he rotates inside for the Buccaneers than he ever was as a defensive end. In a 3/4 defensive ends are built more like three technique defense of tackles as opposed to a 43 defense. Again I’m trying to be optimistic LOL.

  49. pelbuc Says:

Another Licht stellar draft pick that gets paid to NOT PLAY. Sapp was right.

  50. TonyC Says:

8 weeks is the high number so probably sometime in between. I’d bet week 2.

  51. theodore Says:

Take the over in every game Vea misses. Once Vea returns, continue to take the over because this defense is going to suck regardless.

  52. oxycondoms Says:

never been a fan of using a high draft pick on someone morbidly obese

He will have a relapse on it as long as it stays hot and muggy. As soon as the weather is nice he will be “healed”

  55. LordCornelius Says:

    Hey LUV!

Good to see you and thanks hope all is well with you too. Excited to have some freaking football soon

  56. DB55 Says:

    LC

Play with me if you want but you know much better than that, right brother?

Fact remains 2 preseasons in a row have knocked VV out. Call it what you want but when you compare it to his game vs Baltimore that was cold and wet (just like yo mama, lol jk pimp) he dominated however this heat got him sidelined 2 years in a row. #Facts

  57. DB55 Says:

    What up luv

Thank god you’re back. We need a voice of reason and who actually has a clue.

  58. NOSBOS Says:

Coolin in the cut LUV, same to you my friend.

  59. DB55 Says:

Football players at 350 pounds can’t exist in Florida, especially west coast guys. “He’s very adamant about this,” Beckles said of Sapp.

    https://www.joebucsfan.com/2018/05/sapp-skeptical-of-vita-vea-questions-jason-licht-bucs-blog/

    Hey but wtfdik….

  60. Bucsfanman Says:

LUV- I don’t see my name on that list but I ain’t mad at you!!!!
    Where you been?

  61. Bucsfanman Says:

I’m glad it’s not too serious but this is reminiscent of last year where we didn’t have his services for like what, 4-6 games?! I remember it took a while for him to get going.
    Get well soon big man!

  62. Tampabaybucfan Says:

[UPDATE: 1:57 p.m.] Jenna Laine of ESPN reports Vea has a sprained LCL and could miss up to eight weeks.

By 8 weeks instead of 8 games….I take that to mean he will miss about 4 games….

  63. Wesley Says:

That still sucks, every game us so important. They can’t afford to miss him for 2 weeks let alone 8.

  64. LordCornelius Says:

“however this heat got him sidelined 2 years in a row. #Facts”

You know I love you man but those are simply not facts lol.

A fact would be saying heat does NOT cause LCL sprains or Achilles injuries. Heat can cause cramps / fatigue / heat illnesses and even death. But I can’t find anything to support the idea that heat can even be a contributing factor in tearing/spraining/breaking anything.

If anything I’d think the cold is worse for that. With any joint pain for example it’s typically more painful in cold weather. You’re typically more stiff which is when people are more prone to injuries most the time.

  65. Joe Says:

    Hey but wtfdik….

    Again, not very much.

Sapp claims stamina is an issue for these guys. Stamina has nothing to do with an LCL sprain.

  66. Pickgrin Says:

    LCL sprain

6-8 weeks in a bad case scenario

3-5 weeks in a not so bad case scenario

I’m hoping Vea’s knee sprain is of the lesser variety – there were reports on jbf and elsewhere about him being seen since – walking around and not limping.

We shall see – but I’d bet he’ll be back no later than week 3 (Giants – Jimmy Jack) and potentially even start the 1st regular season game.

  67. LordCornelius Says:

I’m nerding out on LCL knowledge.

One site saying a grade II sprain is up to 6 weeks before returning to activity, so that is what I’m guessing it has to be, since that’d mean 6 weeks of healing worst case + a few weeks to get back into shape on it.

Grade III is 3-4 months or 12-16 weeks so it can’t be that unless these 4sholes are lying to us. If he’s in crutches for a few weeks then I’ll be concerned that it’s more of a grade III than II. At least based on some quick google research

    GO BUCS

  68. T REX Says:

I’m more concerned that he’s missing his second training camp in a row

  69. Mike Johnson Says:

Here it is fellow Buc fans..Raw. I’m not going to sprinkle sugar on it either. You are right TRex..He’s missing yet another training camp which means…when he does come back say the 4th game or so..Its going take his outta shape A.. another 3 to 4 weeks to get into shape. Perhaps even longer. So there you have it. No JPP, No Vita Vea..and No McCoy. Ohhh yeah, this team has improved alright. They just changed the..icing on the cake. Thats all. 6-8 for the season. Outright Pityfull. SOB’s (same ole Bucs) With the,,Same ole Sorry A.. Defense.

  70. Pickgrin Says:

Yea – LC – I should have put that but was assuming Grade 2 sprain at worst based on reports of him not even visibly limping around OBP.

    Grade 3 and its 10>12weeks+++

Grade 2 – 4>8 weeks depending on severity

    Grade 1 – 2>4 weeks

Hopefully Via’s sprain will heal quickly – whatever the severity was.

He’s young, strong and has access to experts/Doctors as well as healing/rehabilitation methods that the average person doesn’t…

  71. Rod Munch Says:

Injured last year, injured this year, that’s 2-for-2.

OJ was also injured last year, and injured the year before that. He was 2-for-2.

Before that it was VH3, who was injured last year, and the year before that…

The Bucs should just trade their 1st rounders for 4th’s, they have pretty good luck there.

  72. DB55 Says:

LCL is moot. Homie can’t make It past camp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meanwhile, Darin Payne and Derwin James haven’t missed a game.

Best ability is availability. I’m not even mad at VV honestly could care less. I’m pissed at Licht and how he can get it wrong all the got dam time. See Greedy Williams meanwhile the CB we select prior to him won’t even start day 1. But hey ….

  73. Rod Munch Says:

Vita was injured on Monday, right? So the clock starts ticking from there, meaning in terms of the NFL season he could be back for game 1 on the short side, or game 4 @LA Rams on the long side. They’d need him for that Rams game in particular since they’re just going to jam it right up the gut of the Bucs without him.

  74. LordCornelius Says:

Vea had no injury history like this in college and it’s completely unrelated to the heat but yeah Jason Licht should have known he’d have an Achilles injury and an LCL tear unrelated to heat or his past nonexistent injury history lol.

Licht’s an idiot for many things but we can’t expect fortune teller GMs when it comes to being able to predict sh1t like this. OJ Howard / VHIII did not have injury history either in college.

It’s easy to complain with this team tho I get it.

    GO BUCS

  75. J Says:

So is the update in the article header or what? This is nothing new.

  76. 813bucboi Says:

    LUV

    whats good bro!!!!!

    we’re getting close!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  77. Pelbuc61 Says:

Licht is an idiot bc he had a much better player or players available when the Bucs traded down. Whether it’s 1 game or 4 he misses, Vea will be out of shape when he comes back. Wasted pick.

  78. Jeff Says:

Smells fishy. Leg will probably need to be removed…completely.

  79. Rob Says:

Injury prone player developing a reputation for potential stardom handcuffed by ill timed injuries. Another 30 for 30 feature in a few years if he can’t stay out of the trainers room. This is getting old. Go Bucs

  80. Rob Tanner Says:

Just make sure he has dry socks on in the cryochamber!

  81. Figures Says:

    Can’t stay healthy

  82. Destinjohnny Says:

We aren’t a playoff team so no need to rush

  83. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have an unfortunate injury history with several of our top draft picks….

VH3, Spence, Justin Evans, OJ, Vea…….simply bad luck…..heat is irrelevant.

  84. Mike Johnson Says:

Somewhere Deep in the Carolina’s.. theres a guy named GMC..Sitting at his crib after practice..smokin a stoggie…smilin..sayin, How Y’all like me now Tampa
    Bay? LOL

  85. Figures Says:

This will be a dude they waste 3-4 years on always saying “if he can stay healthy he’s really something”

Meanwhile he will miss multiple games per season have one or two games and they’ll say “he was really coming on those last couple games”.

Then the following camp he will get hurt again and repeat.

Can’t even make it through a couple weeks of practice.

    Pathetic.

  86. Pit of Misery Says:

Although Vea is out a few weeks, I am encouraged Cappa evidently held his own against Vea.

  87. LUVMYBUCS Says:
