Miserable Pass Rush

August 28th, 2019

Can’t blame him.

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians this spring waved off the need to go get a pass rusher because, by gosh, they are going to blitz.

Well, Joe hopes Arians and Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles have the magic elixir because when the Bucs did not blitz, they couldn’t pressure quarterbacks for s(p)it last year. And this was with Mr. 12 1/2 Sacks, Jason Pierre-Paul.

The good people of NFL Films, doing research for BSPN’s NFL Matchup, found that when not blitzing, even with JPP, the Bucs were one of the sorriest teams in the NFL in getting at the quarterback.

The Bucs pressured quarterbacks when not blitzing 22.7 percent of the time, fifth-worst in the NFL. That’s just a hair better than the Stinking Panthers.

The Bucs simply must get better heat on quarterbacks if they ever hope to escape Buccaneers Cove.

Blitz? Did you not see White get stuffed on all of his blitzes? Might want to consider minter as the starter but wtfdik

  2. Anthony Says:

Well, Jadeveon Clowney is there, but he’s only interested in the Seahawks & Eagles.

    Maybe, Andre Branch? IDK!

I’m not saying that he’s the answer, but this team needs both more pass rushers & OL help.

The only saying in the NFL: Games are won by the big guys in the trenches.

Not surprised by the Rams at all especially since they had Suh , Donald & Fowler jr & such . They have no specific need to blitz much also , bears I bet most of that percentage came from the one man wrecking crew himself in the form of Mr. MACK DADDY . with running a now 3-4 scheme I have no problem with the bucs sending guys from all over behind vea , Suh , & whoever will be our 3rd d-lineman most of the time . I have faith in most of them to get all the way home to the QB while blitzing & gives us the chance to change it up and fake a rush to hurry a QB into thinking one is coming and so just may force a ball in there to someone to soon for a pick . I am really excited to see what this year is going to tell us fans because the last few years I was placing bets with myself on how soon the defence was going to make me puke ! We are in for a good / not great defence for the bucs & if jameis just cuts down on mistakes & turnovers & our running backs can make any kind of difference , then we will make the playoffs ! Even with the current on-line we have..GO BUCS !!!!!

  4. Christopher Schiefen Says:

But this year we’re playing a 3-4 hybrid, we have Suh, a better Vita, Spence playing in position, Devin White, a bunch of new and improved secondary people, and also, we no longer have the worst secondary defensive scheme in recorded history. A humongous pet peeve is when “analysts” try to tell you what a team is through the years, even after big scheme and player changes. Last year basically didn’t happen according to August 28, 2019.

  5. Buc1987 Says:

    Nope you can’t blame JPP.

But you can blame Jameis Winston.

The reason the Bucs have no pass rush is because of Jameis Winston.

Jameis’ fault #1 : Crappy offensive line. That’s Winston’s fault.

Jameis’ fault #2 : No Pass rush. That’s Winston’s fault.

    Go Bucs!

  6. Bojim Says:

    Hey! Let’s see what happens?

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

New AGGRESSIVE scheme, new players. This defense already looks night and day from what it was a season ago.

DB55- I saw White get swallowed up too. Not sure how much ILB blitzes in this scheme but they may want to clean that up.

  8. BucEmUp Says:

I dont give a crap how they get to the qb….just get there..Images of Press coverage and blitzing have been dancing in my head for many moons now

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Not sure what we’re supposed to get out of that list Joe. Rams did good on the year overall. Jaguars did poorly. Steelers were meh defensively. Pats were quite good. Chiefs were a meh defense, but the Ravens were very good. Dolphins did meh on the year, as did the 49ers. Bears were very good and Seattle was quite good.

So what exactly does that chart tell us? Does ‘pressure on the QB when not blitzing’ guarantee anything? Does it guarantee a winning record or a trip to the playoffs? Doesn’t appear so … Although it helps. I think it takes some semblance of BALANCE between offense and defense. Pats showed that. So did the Rams. Bears are improving in balance. Chiefs and Steelers and Ravens? Not so much. Our Bucs? Improving in terms of BALANCE? Yes. But still with a long ways to go.

    Defense,

I believe you may be looking too hard. The stat is not something that you can extrapolate from …. and into…well, anything.

There is one thing that may prompt you to look at additional information. That is, if a team can create pressure with 4 defensive lineman, that gives the defensive secondary a numbers advantage and a lot of flexibility in how they cover.

Basically, it should translate into better pass defense. But I don’t know if that list of the top teams would remain the same if you looked at passing yards.

  11. D1 Says:

    Buc 87,

Bucs pass rush improves. So does Winston’s accuracy.

Kicking game goes top 10, Winston is top 5 yac.

  12. Todd Says:

Hey, let’s be histrionic! Because, hell, nothing has changed since last year. Same coaches, same non-schemes.

Yeah, let’s just dwell in the past as an excuse to cast a negative shadow on this year’sBucs.

GREAT fricking idea! Great with our mourning coffee!

    Todd

  13. Pittsshore Says:

We will get pressure, the DBs just need to do their part.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

D1 … Wasn’t really trying to extrapolate. I just believe that some modicum of BALANCE in team construction is necessary to have a consistently winning TEAM. And oh yes that MAYBE there’s more than one way to skin a cat. Pressure on the QB for instance can come in a number of different ways, and may not even be categorized as ‘pressure on the QB’ in the traditional stats. It can come from outside (DEs), from inside (DTs), from blitzes coming from various positions, can even come from great coverage that leaves no one free for the QB to throw to. No substitute for 11 guys playing good solid football together.

  15. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Can’t compare this year to last year. Different scheme, different coaches and several different players, not to mention, our speed on defense is now top five in the league.

  16. Conte Piscatelli Says:

It’s awfully hard to get pressure on a QB when he is able to play pitch and catch with a wide open receiver on rhythm because of the 15 yard cushion.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

    smitty is gone!!!!!!!

thats all you need to know about the defense……it got better once smitty got sent packing…..now we have coaches that will play to their strengths, develop players and have a flexible scheme unlike smitty’s trash @$$!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  18. JimbobBucsFan Says:

    Understand your frustration, Todd.

SOME of our posters don’t’ realize yet we have an all new coaching staff with all new schemes and approaches.

SOME can’t understand you don’t judge first year players in their first off season preparation and who have never taken one snap in a “real” NFL game in comparison to vets who have been in the league for more than two years. You can’t have the same expectations for all alike.

We must also understand that SOME that “YELL!!!!!” the loudest and post frequently don’t necessarily represent the majority of loyal Buccaneer fans.

Take heart. This season will be the game changer for Tampa Bay.

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

A great pass Rush has been the Bucs Achilles heel ever since winning a Superbowl which was..by the way..A big reason why we got there in the 1st place. Yet yr after yr, fans demanded the aerial show other teams had. Well, we got some of that offensive show over the years and went completely backwards in the pass rushing dept..as did our wins. It will be the same this year. sure, Jameis will complete a few bombs here and there. But I can tell all of you definitively…Our pass rush is gonna be dismal for at least those 1st few games. Arians is Spinnin
right now. But I know he witnessed that Clev Browns pass rush and thought, Ohh my god, now that’s what we need!

  20. Gerald McBezos Says:

Hopefully drafting the undersized 3-4 MLB over the type of DE we’ve been dreaming of for 15 years now doesn’t come back to bite us in the ass.
