Target On His Back

August 28th, 2019

Offensive line thoughts.

If Alex Cappa thinks he has a big job now that he is the starting right guard for the Bucs, a former Bucs starting right guard said in so many words Cappa better buckle up.

Former Bucs player and current popular local sports radio personality Ian Beckles was horrified at what he watched from the Bucs offensive line Friday night.

Now the Bucs have said in recent days — shoot, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston said it in his postgame remarks — that Jameis was in part to blame for the five-sack first half (Beckles agreed).

But Beckles, speaking on his podcast “In the Trenches,” is of the mind that the awful performance by Cappa has put a bulls-eye on the second-year player’s back.

Now that teams have the latest tape on Cappa, Beckles said, they not only will target him but they will come at him with everything including the kitchen sink, beginning with the stout defensive line of John Lynch’s 49ers a week from Sunday at the Den of Depression.

“I gassed up Alex Cappa. I’m taking it back,” Beckles said. “Terrible! He looked worse than almost Caleb Benenoch out there. That’s hard. I watched Alex Cappa give up a spin move clean. That wasn’t a sack — should have been. I saw Alex Cappa get beat on a simple T-E step, which is tackle-end. It is as simple as can be. He did not see it coming.

“You know what is going to happen? You know what is going to happen everybody? When you go out there and you are playing San Francisco or Carolina or whoever it is and they see your film, boy they are going to stunt you to death! Then they are going to spin you to death! They are going to bullrush you to death! And you are not going to know what’s coming. Cappa got smashed on the second sack.”

It wasn’t just Cappa who Beckles thought had a rough game Friday. So too did right tackle Demar Dotson.

“Demar Dotson on that first sack? Eeewww!” Beckles said. “That’s as bad as I have ever seen Demar get housed. He got housed! Demar is not young. Demar needs rest. Problem is, you have 16 games to play.”

Yeah, Joe thought the offensive line had the worst game he’s seen in quite a while. Beckles went on to detail why it was awful.

“The offensive line was pugh-TRID!” Beckles began. “That’s as bad as I have seen in a while. … You give up five sacks, a holding penalty and a hands-to-the-face, which negated a big play, in a half? That’s a bad game!”

The regular season kicks off in 11 days.

As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and encourages listeners to submit Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

For a second there I thought he was going to leave out Dotson. That right side was awful. Vernon owned the two of them.
Beckles is right too, unfortunately. Teams are going to throw the kitchen sink at the one side all game. Then when we cheat help over, go after the left side. That’s what I would do.

  4. Bob in Valrico Says:

Its no secret that the right side of our line is a weak link. Steps need to be
taken to shore it up. IF no changes are made in the preseason then we need Auclaire or another O lineman to be an extra blocker.

We also need a RB that is not a liability in the blocking scheme. Ellington seems to be a weak link in that area.

  5. Bob in Valrico Says:

Hopefully the regular season will also bring better game plans, because this
O line doesn’t do vanilla well. The offensive staff has to figure out a way to get
more first downs on first and second downs, if this level of blocking becomes
the norm then 3rd and long will be tough against a good D Line.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Just a thought, but we’ve known that the right side of our OLine stinks for quite awhile now. No big surprises there. Cap pa isn’t the answer, and neither is Dotson. Whistling in the dark won’t make the boogeymen go away.

Trade for some help Jason. Look at other teams practice squads. Bring in some help when OLinemen get released next week. In short, DO YOUR JOB.

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

Defense Rules- I agree, we’ve known this for at least 2 seasons. The way I see it is that we have some collateral in the form of future picks, TE, and maybe WR. None of which will be of any use to us if we can’t protect the QB.
I still argue that the play-calling needs to be short/screen passing, getting the ball out more quickly. The long developing plays are going to get our QB killed.

  8. Buc4life24 Says:

Quick releases and screens is our only hope…not confident the line will mysteriously get better!

  9. Sarasota Garey Says:

Your only as strong as your weakest link.

  10. Bob in Valrico Says:

Arians as much as said there were short passes open. Jameis has to do a better job of seeing and taking advantage of them against the better D Lines.

More teams than the Bucs will be looking for good O lineman on the waiver wire.
So a trade might be the best option. Jensen will be getting 10 mil for 2020 and 2022. The team may also be looking for a less expensive option at center. Good teams manage to shuffle their O Line to deal with holes in their line. I wonder if its possble to move Jensen to guard until we correct our O line deficiencies
    in 2019.

First Licht forces Benenoch (his draft pick) into the starting spot. Hevsucked.

Now, Licht is forcing Cappa into the RG spot.

Anybody remember our line with Marpet and Mankins?

    Best O-Line in Bucs history.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Bob in Valrico … Was wondering about moving Jensen to Guard myself. That’s the position he’s most experienced at anyway. We’ll still end up needing 2 other OLinemen anyways, but might be easier to find a Center than a quality Guard. And maybe we could work trade with the Titans for Pamphile. Oh wait…

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The answer to all of our problems at RG is Stevie T…..

  15. Bob in Valrico Says:

    DR,
Good chance our backup center with seven years in the league and less than 10 starts will see a lot of action in next game. Might be interesting to keep an eye on him. I did notice in the last game RG4 had to field a high snap one handed before he got off the pass Tanner Hudson that he caught with one hand.

That play and others by Griffin , made me wonder why Griffin didn’t get a fair chance to compete for the backup role.

I was thinking last night…the Bay Area has no critical media voice on the Bucs (since Big DoG left the airways)…..the Buc franchise STINKS and has been given a softer gentler message for far too long

  17. Pittsshore Says:

They will clean up the OLine. Communication issues

  18. Ra'Shad Says:

If yall feel that way, then why not go find another team. No one is asking you to be a fan of the bucs. No one is talking about how Dotson trashed his man on another rep, cause it wasn’t on the highlight reel. Maybe 10% of yall even watch what goes on in the trenches anyway.

@ Valrico I think this is the last year of Jensen’s guaranteed money.

  19. Bobby M. Says:

The issue with our line is you have THREE!!! guys in a row that are at best avg….AT BEST!

Jensen is the most overpaid player on the team, probably in the league…AVG
    Cappa is avg AND inexperienced….MEDIOCRE
    Dotson is old and slow….AVG

Teams are going to tee off on that side because those three cant put together consecutive plays where they all execute. There’s always going to be a break down or penalty.

The best hope we have is Arians installs screens to the RB that takes advantage of a defense’s aggressiveness.

  20. SCBucsFan Says:

I wish Beckles had been able to review Beckles’ play when he was on the roster. In his words, “Eeewww”. Same way I review his “writing”.

Good thing we have Jason Licht to fix the problem…….

  23. RawDog Says:

Offensive line critique is about the only thing we can trust Beckles opinion on. Interesting to hear him break down how each guy got beat.

  24. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Just a side note……the Ron and Ian show is MUCH BETTER when Ron is on vacation.

  25. Jim Says:

Jason has only five more years to fix this problem…

  26. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

Fire Joe Gilbert now! We can fix the line with good coaching. If this keeps up, Jameis will be retiring midseason!

  27. WyldKat Says:

I was feeling OK about the season until that preseason game. Sure it’s preseason, but bad is bad.

  28. 813bucboi Says:

yeah…licht has to make something happen….this team can win 10+games IF the oline is solid…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  29. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Weird selecting D2, D3 and lazy OL players doesnt produce a good OL..so weird…and OJ Howard…seems another wasted pick, good thing jason lichts 10 year plan will round in to shape just when the glazers get ready to move the bucs to manchester

  30. RustyRhinos Says:

I want to compare Beckles play against all the fluff and stuff he talks. If we are to believe his talk he should have been an All Pro with Pro Bowls every season. As I recall he was not all that dominant as a player for us. He was a starter for the Bucs but last year so was Benenoch. Not saying he was as bad as that but he had his own moments that he got spanked. So he does have that experience to share with Cappa. For a player who played 9 seasons, while only making all 16 games in a season 4 times. He sure talks a good game.

  31. Ben real Says:

It’s no secret the right side of our line is weak? Not only the right our left is weak also

  32. D1 Says:

    RaShad,

Lol…Funny .. Ive been looking for someone to mention Dot stonewalled Vernon when tried to use that same move. Cappa, got beat but he had a few decent plays as well. Now everyone is freaked and believe we’re signing 2 new starters before game 1.

Give them 3 games …and that’s every team in the league. Then things will have gelled or not. Preseason, is there to get a head count on how many fools follow the team.

  33. Ben real Says:

Jason litch only has 5 more years to fix this? I promise you and I see it now litch won’t last 2 … because if we win only 3 games … I give arians 1 more year here if that and he retires … when he does litch will be fired … this team on paper and from the previous years are light years away from the playoffs … same team that went 5-11 … there has been no upgrade to the line … our only bright spot is receivers that is it!!! I see a slight improvement in defense but once this team gets 1-4 everyone is shutting it down

  34. NPRSageBoy Says:

I’ll continue to say it: our starting RG and RT are currently on another teams roster. I sure hope the Light/Arians duo is adept at dumpster diving this Labor Day weekend.

  35. D1 Says:

    NPRsage,

Sorry, no offense but that’s just F ing ridiculous!

A backup who could help by game 4 is the most probable result. There’s not 2 starting offensive linemen who’s going to be cut. Even if santa crapped his pants and you got hit by lighting on the way to cash in your fantasy 5 retirement fund …it’s not going to be lucky enough to outbid other teams who are looking for the same guy. That and oh…the most obvious fact in the city..
Zero knowledge of the playbook means you don’t start….duh!!!

    NDOG. ..you ain’t always right……but you’re not wrong either….

Gee it’s almost like some of us have been saying since frickin January that we have no right side to our offensive line.

I guess some people wanted visual proof first… well there you go folks.

Good luck to Jameis and our running backs this year.

  38. TOM Says:

First off Dotson will not make through 16 games. Second Jensen may be overpaid but he is the second best lineman after Marpet. SAD.
