“Damn Good Job”

August 23rd, 2019

Strong game.

No, Bucco Bruce Arians was not talking about the offensive line.

Lost in the freakout over the lack of blocking in the first half was that the Bucs defense didn’t play too badly. In fact, the secondary was refreshingly strong, especially knowing they were going up against the loaded Browns offense.

One guy who stood out is hard-hitting second-year safety Jordan Whitehead.

“He made a couple of real good plays throughout all those series,” Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians said in his halftime remarks. “Our whole defense – when you give the ball up inside the 50 five times and only give up nine points, it’s a damn good job.”

Yeah, the defensive backs were flocking to the thrown ball tonight. Joe had to do a double-take.

For a while there, Joe thought Bucs defensive backs making plays on the ball was an optical illusion.

Griffin is coming on now…i was disappointed the 1st game but these last two he’s looked very calm and poised.

  2. MadMax Says:

oops, wrong thread, jit, sorry….and yeah, the DB’s looking good tonight.

  3. DB55 Says:

wanna bet Jordan Whitehead would be better

    Big fan!

    This kid can ball.

Saw it last yr but he looks dialed-in rn.

The pick was nice but the PD in the back of the end zone was stellar! Not only does he blind the receiver he muscles the ball out all in one motion. Fn BRILLIANT and the dude was literally 9 inches taller. I’m Looking at you VH3, you scrub.

  4. Jean Lafitte Says:

The offensive line will be our achilles heel

  5. DB55 Says:

Sorry Joe you got it wrong, the DBs were getting burnt for the most part, the 3/4 shots to the end zone were way overthrown. Davis was beat in the corner, somebody else was beast in the back of the end zone. And Higgins has them all beat in the middle of the ez. Baker missed them all! But yea we won’t talk about that.

VH3 was ghost, Davis was slow to the spot tonight. White looks like he’s never seen a ball being passed before and idk who the other starting db is lol 🤷🏽‍♂️

Whitehead and the dline showed up tonight. I Especially liked watching Suh effortlessly out play McIceCream in every facet of the game from run stopping, to pressure, to accidentally making a play about 9 yards down field to push the rb out of bounds. Nassib s a player. Nunez wants the bag and Spence (formally known as Spawn) is fast, real fast idk. Minter looks like a starter along side LVD and I even saw Beau Allen make a play if not an effort. Gholston doing what Gholston does.

That front 6/7 looked decent but those corners are going to get us beat if they don’t learn the route-tree quickly.

  6. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

If that was our defense of last year those 9 points would have been 21. Great job D!

  7. BucEmUp Says:

Doesnt whitehead kinda look like tupac?

  8. Bucfan33 Says:

    Freeman = Winston

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If it were a fair competition, Griffin would get the backup job.

“I get around”. – Tupac Shakur

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  11. MadMax Says:

@DB55, yeah, agreed. Im telling you, if Baker had his boys Beckham jr and Njoku along with Chubb as rb, it wouldve been a different animal….and maybe we still couldve passed the test and eeked out a win at the last seconds, but i dont know about that….especially with our crap dOh! line….good gosh we better go O line shopping!

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

Stacked Browns offense, without OBJ and Landry,

  13. Cobraboy Says:

I’ve seen more Bucs DB’s contest balls this preseason than I’ve seen the last three years combined.

    Refreshing.

Man BA is a genius. Who else could create this scenario??? Have the offense be lackluster, efficient but not great and to have a game-plan-that straps it to the defense and the kicker. Two areas that have lost us how many games-in the fourth quarter the past few seasons??? Can’t simulate that urgency in practice. In the end they both showed up BIG TIME! Now there is also no way to simulate that bull$hit of an offensive line. That was sone bull$h!+. JW3 will be alright though. WE ALL WE GOT! WE ALL WE NEED!

    ROO TO THE BRUHZ

While the post-game focus of many will certainly be the abysmal play of the OL and Jameis’ ongoing inability to hit the deep ball & take what the defense is giving him (the greater of #3’s evils, in my view), let’s all take a minute to acknowledge that over the course of these 3 preseason games, there’s an NFL caliber Defense in Tampa Bay.

No, it isn’t perfect. Not by a long-shot…but the tackling is significantly better; DBs are making plays on the ball (the fact that they’re even in the vicinity of WRs is a major improvement); there’s disruption through Xs and Os. It’s been a VERY long time since we’ve seen anything resembling any of that here. Hat’s off to the entire Defensive coaching staff. They’re making chicken salad out of chicken spit.

  16. Cgmaster27 Says:

@madman yeah you’re right ,they didnt have chubb, they had Kareem hunt! So that doesnt hold any water. And maybe Mayfield’s passes were off because of coverage? Not sure exactly what game you were watching that the rest of us weren’t.

  17. MadMax Says:

^ um, youve never watched Chubb, thats ok.

  18. firethecannons Says:

Baker looked awful, his stats were awful and he wasn’t under near as much pressure as JW Baker lost that game on the 5yd line with a first down and he gets 3 points Baker was the problem and our defense was good not great but good and good to watch

  19. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Say what you want about some of the best misses by Mayfield, but that dude is a good quarterback. The difference this year is we are making the quarterback make tough throws to beat us. Gone are the days of playing pitch and catch up and down the field through soft coverage. As we have seen for years even career nobodies looked like Hall of Fame quarterbacks under the old philosophy. What you saw is that a quarterback will need to be dialed in to beat us, Baker didn’t have his best game if he had the game would have been different, but the defense we played last year would have given up 21 in the first half.

  20. hamilton Says:

where everybody who said whitehead would not be first team.

  21. BringBucsBack Says:

Conté, nice post! Folks are looking at Baker’s stats, only. He was BARELY missing his guys because, for the first time since Schiano was here, the defense is making the O beat them!
