The “Instinctive” & “Athletic” Bucs Secondary

Talkin’ rookies

The rookie Bucs defensive backs have the attention of their fellow defensive teammates.

Ever since the Bucs took three DB’s in this year’s draft and Bucs head coach Bucco Bruce Arians said the secondary is “totally fixed,” many have been anxious to see how the DB’s would perform come training camp.

Through two days, they have been fast and impressive.

A fellow  rookie, fourth-rounder Anthony Nelson, was asked by JoeBucsFan.com about the secondary and what he has seen from those young DB’s. His words should help Bucs fans sleep well tonight.

“Yeah, I mean they’re instinctive players, they’re athletic players,” Nelson said. “I mean they’re just making plays out there, doing what they do, you know, reading routes, getting hands on balls … and disrupting the quarterback and stuff like that.”

A fellow rookie, Nelson noted the adjustment from college is a challenging one, but he believes he is moving along and making progress, along with the rookies in the secondary. He noted that while they’re all making mistakes on the practice field trying to adjust to the new defense, they are getting better every day.

Growing pains are expected from any rookie, especially when learning a diverse, complex defense such as Todd Bowles’.

But even with the growing pains, this secondary should be better than the one the Bucs put on the field last season.

It would be incredibly hard to be worse.

Man …Anthony Nelson looks super young. Think he did come out year early?

So far … along with Noah Spence …the next two players that have shined are Sean Murphy – bunting (who needs good shorter nickname ) and Carlton Davis.

Let’s see how the dbs play in pads today.
Keep us posted on camp notes joez and Zach.

  2. rhenry Says:

    I simply call him SMB.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

rhenry … SMB works for me. Rhymes with JPP & EX-Buc GMC. Easy to remember.

Joe … You’re starting to sound (almost) enthusiastic about the Bucs’ new Secondary. Scary. Next thing we know you’ll be (almost) praising our LBs. I don’t even want to think what’d happen if the Bucs showed even a semblance of a pass rush.

  5. Jim Says:

    “Bunt”

  6. Bird Says:

Bunt would be good nickname if baseball player.

  7. Bird Says:

    Is SMB down with OPP?

  8. NOSBOS Says:

A major plus when it comes to this group is they’ve entered this league and are learning this system at the same time. Will they be perfect next season, of course not. But they will make plays(too long too fast and too athletic not to). I’m excited about seeing them next year but even more excited about what they’ll look like as a cohesive unit once they fully mature after a few seasons. See, everyone became familiar with the legion of boom once they came of age. But when you do a little research you come away realizing they had been together a few years prior to the “you mad bro” game that launched that team’s rise.

  9. NOSBOS Says:

It’s not just about next season. It’s Bigger than that.

  12. BucEmUp Says:

Been hearing “We’re just trying.to work hard and get better everyday” for too many damn years. Difference is its actually happening with

    REAL COACHING!!!!!!

  13. Defense Rules Says:

WhatdaBUCisthis … Oops, my bad. The enthusiasm about the Secondary should’ve tipped me off.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

BucEmUp … ‘REAL COACHING’ yes. Have you noticed yet how many of the players getting accolades (like White, SMB & Edwards) are NEW TALENT? Taller, faster, more instinctive than the OLD TALENT (like Grimes, Elliott, Conte, Kwon, Taylor, Lynch etc) who all started at various times last year but are no longer with us.

  15. Race to 10 Says:

I’d be very instinctive I was practicing against my own defense every week too. I love the hype and hope for the best but there is a reason starting jobs are not solidified until preseason games are played

  17. BA FAN Says:

Trust BA. What have I been saying all this time? Licht has picked players with great potential and BA can develop them faster than anyone and you are now seeing the results! Long time serious Bucs fans are going to love this coming season and we are going to shake up the NFL this year. Spense is no bust now and neither is Jones or even VHIII. And when Smith comes off his suspension he is no bust either. Just look at how much BA increased the win numbers in his first year each place. We have won the Coach Lottery! Enjoy it!
