Bryon Leftwich Says Tough Situations Are Planned, Intentional

July 30th, 2019

Byron Leftwich is demanding all kinds of pressure on Jameis.

Offensive coordinator/playcaller Byron Leftwich pulled the curtain back a little this morning on what’s happening behind the scenes at One Buc Palace.

Leftwich painted a picture of defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and himself working closely together to make sure the offense is under extreme duress in practice. The goal is to put everything on the offense so they learn how to react.

“Hey, what you got in today? See if you can do this,” Leftwich said is an example of how he works hand in hand with Bowles on practice planning. “They disguise well. We probably won’t see a team that disguises as well as [Todd’s defense] does all year.”

“Normal” mistakes are what the Bucs offense is making, Leftwich said. “Once they know how to respond to the danger,” then it’s all downhill from there, he added.

As for America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, Leftwich said he has a target on his back in training camp. “Every play I’m trying to make it as hard for him as possible,” Leftwich said.

Jameis Winston is one of the biggest mistakes this Franchise ever made!!!!

  2. UnderMeBucin’Hat Says:

Wow real coaches! I’m more excited than last year but also more skeptical. I am NOT getting my hopes up until week 4!

He doesn’t look sharp out there and this is year five. It’s not like he’s been on vacation for the past six months. He’s still overthrowing receivers, has bad ball placement, throwing passes to the defense. In many ways he still looks like a rookie. His “normal mistakes” are the same ones he’s been making for years. I don’t believe the QB of the future is on this roster.

The best QB on this team is probably Byron Leftwich at this point.

  4. BucsBandit Says:

    LOLZ.

As if this is anything difficult for NFL QBs. As if opposing Defenses don’t always try and make things difficult for QBs they face. That’s their #1 focus EVERY SINGLE GAME.

    #morejameisexcuses

  5. Buc4evr Says:

Exactly what should be happening. Throw the kitchen sink at Jameis and the O-line. Steel sharpens steel. This strategy can only help Jameis when the real bullets start to fly.

  6. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

More people defending jameis, you mean bowles is playing NFL defense? Pat Maholmes or Mitch T would be lightning these rookies up right now

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Mark my words,

Jameis will go down as one of the most over-rated bucs player in Bucs history……..ranking up there with candy azz GMC.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

    Good stuff.

    Go Jameis!

  9. Raceto10 Says:

Obsess much @bucsanthem? Dont answer you’ll just seem even more delusional. I can think of much bigger mistakes and most of them have to do with decisions by the owners, uniforms, coaching hires and firings. Guess you wanted Mariota also.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

Same old pathetic Winston Derangement Syndrome LOSERS!

Look at them all…..prolly frothing at the mouth like rabid dogs.

    Bunch of fools.

You guys have a WHOLE freaking season to watch Jameis.

You must be excited about that….

Excuses? What’s your excuse for regurgitating the same old tired crap every day.
Anthem you say nothing new. Go back and read your posts. Troll-like much?

  11. Raceto10 Says:

Mitch T would be lightning these rookies up right now?

Lol uh ok I’m gonna take that as a typo, couldn’t have possibly been serious about that one.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Joe…you should just type the words Jameis Winston and just leave it at that….no need to type anything else for the comments section. That’s all it takes. You could write a positive article about Jameis (rare)or a negative one. The same fools will come out with their “stop making up excuses” line. Then they’ll go on about what they hate about Winston from accuracy to Uber. Wash, rinse, and repeat. YAWN!

Come back tomorrow and do it all over again….yipeee!

  13. firethecannons Says:

wtf is wrong with you people! Jameis gets this year to prove he can do it and if not then we pick a new QB in a great draft year! It is all good–no lose proposition–jameis sux-gone jameis plays great and we win games then maybe playoffs. stupid commenters–try to find the silver lining and get a fcking life!!!!!!!!

  14. firethecannons Says:

and Joe stop with the moderation!!!!!!!

  15. Joe Says:

and Joe stop with the moderation!!!!!!!

If you know how to write code, please e-mail Joe. Might even make a buck or two.

  16. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

    Sounds good!

  17. Magadude Says:

Wow, that’s two more Jameis apologists excuses added in a week.

    Leftwich adds:
    – We are intentionally making him look bad.

This goes with the one Arians offered a few days ago:

    – His arm his tired.

  18. BetterBucFan Says:

Joe does this website use bbcode?

  19. WestChap Says:

We probably should ask Joe to stop all articles on JW. At this point we all know that nothing matters but his performance the next 16 games. Over the years we’ve endured the overly harsh and the outright fanboys… time to perform. I’m hoping but afraid. Can’t wait to see some live action… even if preseason.

  20. bkgrime Says:

Jameis will go down as the best QB this franchise has ever had

  21. Buc1987 Says:

    WestChap…Bravo!

If the kid doesn’t continue to improve (which he has season to season)then he’ll be gone and there’s some REALLY good looking QB’s coming out in the next draft. Go get one then I say. KEEP trying until this team finally HAS it’s QB!

I’m hoping none of that transpires of course and the reason why they are keeping Winston around is because they see the same things that I see in his play/talent.

The kid has oodles of talent imo….that’s always been my opinion.

    He’s still here as well.

We’ve seen some turrible QB’s suit up for the Bucs over the years. I don’t put Winston in that category at all.

I hope he has a phenomenal season. I think every other fan should hope so too.

    Go Bucs!!

  22. TexBuc Says:

What I understood the OC say is the DC knows what plays are coming and the OC wants the DC to blitz the hell out of Winston.

Now I don’t how ANY QB would be able to beat a defense that knows what play is coming on a consistent basis. Better the offense to practice against pressure than throwing against DB’s playing 10 yards off in zone 90% of the time.

  23. BucsFan727 Says:

Its early in camp really cant predict anything yet. There doing what they got to do to get better. Let these coaches get some time to train the players before raining judgment on them. But so far its looking like will go as far as are oline can take us. Its up to them to clean there pants up. Get some of those adult diapers for them. Lol will send it to 1 Buc. “To the oline…for when you crap your pants. Love the fans.”

  24. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

I can’t wait for week #4 as well. When we will finally see the legendary Darrell
Henderson running rough shod over the hapless Buc defense.

I just hope that Jameis can throw for 500 yards and 5 TD’s to over come the Ram’s super rookie.

I’ll be in the JBF chat, either dishing it out or receiving some sh!t!

  25. Ptwalk Says:

Love this type of coaching, keeping the pressure on and the ones that make it will shine like diamonds. This team is about to shock some people.

  26. BucsFan727 Says:

Jamies this your year to shut the haters up. Win or lose. I will be here with the same name. Dont run and hide or change your name. Come back to celebrate the eating of the W cook out. Thats right will be eating Ws all the way to the playoffs. Im really glad Winston is the QB of my team. Cant wait for the season to start. Go Bucs

  27. Ptwalk Says:

@Ghost of Darrell Henderson, you can’t be a Bucs fan.

  28. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

    Ouch!

  29. Bucsfanman Says:

If this is “new” to Jameis or fans, for that matter, then previous coaching staffs should be ashamed. You WANT your QB under duress because it’s what defenses are going to bring on gameday, none of this twinkle-toe B.S.!!! This is STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE for every relevant coaching staff and team.
The difference with the Bucs is that Jameis is now looking at a young, hungry, attacking, and aggressive defense. One he hasn’t seen before, at least in practice anyway.

  30. Tye Says:

That could be a dangerous gamble to take…
A guy who is strong mentally may be able to learn to react and respond quicker by become use to or ‘comfortable’ being in those situations so often..

    or

A guy who is mentally weak will have his confidence destroyed, become ‘shell shocked’ and constantly flinch at every movement always terrified of the next mistake which will cause more mistakes.. ‘quicksand’ as it is known in football!

  31. TexBuc Says:

Practicing without a variety of pressure packages is like weight lifting at the same weight every time, then wondering why you are not getting stronger to lift more weight.

  32. Timbo Slice Says:

I wish my boss made excuses for me when I mess up at work over and over again and still got to make a $20mill payday. Must be nice.

  33. Oregonbucsfan Says:

727, make sure those W-burgers you plan on eating this year are not made mostly of armadillo meat. That W you are going to get from the 49r game is going to be possum from what I hear.

  34. T REX Says:

Not sure Winston is mentally tough enough.

  35. gp Says:

    Ghost
I’ll be in Cali for a wedding that weekend
I will be representing at that game and look forward to watching your boy get stuffed all game long

  36. Rod Munch Says:

Not a bad plan, throw everything at the offense, make them learn to react quickly, then when things slow down, when they face a Mike Smith defense, they feel like they have all day to read and react.

Yes, there’s the other school of thought that if your offense is filled with mentally weak cupcakes that they might fold under the pressure, but this isn’t a young offense so I don’t think they’ll have too many issues with that.

  37. Defense Rules Says:

Will say it again. Folks need to chill for awhile. We’ve just started training camp; mistakes WILL be made. No biggie, UNLESS players don’t learn from those mistakes.

Love that BA & TB are ‘throwing the kitchen sink at Jameis’ and the offense right from the git-go. Two of Jameis’ biggest ‘issues’ IMO have been (1) staring down 1 receiver too much too often; and (2) slower than desired decision making & release. I might be wrong, but I surmise that the solution to that cooked up by BA & Byron is to put extreme pressure on Jameis from the start of training camp so he has no choice but to speed up his progressions & decision making. Very quickly that’ll become second-nature to him.

The other thing that this defensive pressure is accomplishing is ‘culling the herd’. Anyone who thinks that BA & others aren’t noticing who’s stepping up to the pressure the DLine is putting on the OLine isn’t really paying attention. BA wants to find out right now who can hack it and who can’t. Those who can’t WILL BE REPLACED. Bravo BA. Cull the herd!

  38. Blind Melon Says:

Watching that PC, Byron really impressed – and is believable. I had some doubts, but those are gone. Coach Leftwich is doing it right if JW can take the heat and learn from training camp, He’ll do well to move into preseason, regular season and this team could end up in the post season! (I had to say it.)

(Note: These guys are smart… Bowles and Leftwich especially so IMO.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

It’s fine be be critical about Winston at practice. But many of you have lost total perspective with major league overreactions.

Results of preseason football & practices have been proven completely meaningless year after year. Proven to not be a accurate guage in the slightest.

You are allowed to make mistakes in practice. That’s what it’s there for.

It’s training camp and if not even a week in. If you can’t be patient and let players improve during their train then we should really petition the NFL to do away with TC all together cause it’s now meaningless.

I get the negativity and critism because, well, we are the Bucs. But y’all really take that down a creepy little path when your resorting to proclaiming how awful somebody is after a poor practice………First off gain control of yourself and emotions. Second try to enjoy the ride for a change.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  40. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Long year and yes Mitch T is a better QB than Jameis and led the bears to the playoffs and if bears had a K would have won a playoff game last year. The bucs are 2-3 years from being a winning football team

  41. Old School Athlete Says:

Jimmy jack, nice post. Some guys have been complaining on here for years about how we need a proven NFL coach, not a college guy or some recycled has-been stuck in the 90’s. Now we have that coach plus a experienced, proven staff under him and they are still complaining. I expect many will eating crow in December.

  42. Magadude Says:

Well, here is the full list covering all those delusional Winston apologists. Because I am completly fair and eternally objective, I have dropped the “torpedoed by DJax” excuse. Sadly, we’ve added three more just this week? Who knows what else? Before long, the number of excuses will exceed the number of INTs, and that is a LOT.

    Why does Jameis Winston suck?

    – It’s the plan; we are trying to make him throw picks! (Leftwich Special)
    – Joe torpedoed Winston.
    – It’s a new offense.
    – His arm is getting too much work (BA Special).
    – Lies! He’s HoF!!!!! Unfair media and false narratives!
    – He tries too hard.
    – The D sucks.
    – The O Line sucks.
    – The coaching sucks.
    – He can’t idenitfy with his coaches.
    – The software sucks.
    – The weather sucks.
    – The WRs can’t run their routes.
    – The receivers can’t catch.

  43. Magadude Says:

Poor at practice? No, poor after FOUR FREAKIN’ YEARS!

  44. jim burns Says:

Unfortunately our best quarterback now plays in Miami . Want to bet Fitz has more wins and better stats than never-ready jameis ? I kinda feel bad for you guys , another 5-11 season on the horizon . Yuck!

  45. Reach87 Says:

Lots of fake @$$ Bucs fans on this site. You literally cannot help but deride the QB of the team you claim to be a fan of. Slice it any way you want…it’s bush. Queue the we have a right crowd….Go Bucs!

  46. Dapostman Says:

Soon as Winston throws a couple of TD’s without a pick Magadud will flip flop to the other side of ‘I knew Winston had it in him’. Bank on it!

Magadud is the Bill Clinton of Joebucsfan

  47. Oneilbucs Says:

I think I’m done with this hold Jamies thing now it’s football season and I can’t wait to see my bucs play . This site is not for bucs fans it’s for fans of other teams. All yall talk about is how bad Jamies is and the only reason why we suck is because of Jamies. If yall not going to root for the team to win games and that also means Jamies cause he is apart of this team. Then yall need to go find another team to root for as long as Jamies is on the team. Please all I see when I come on this site is hate . I’m just trying to figure out how is the team doing in practice . The national media don’t talk about the bucs and if they do it’s to bash Jamies for this team losing and nothing else cause they don’t watch bucs games. They talked about the Falcons defense and running game and every thing else just like they do with other teams but ours. So Joe can you just tell the real fans what’s going on in Practice ????? And all the Jamies hate and how we gone be 5 -11 man let’s just see what they do when the season starts. Go bucs!!!

  48. orlbucfan Says:

Got some whopper dumbbells on here this season. How exactly is this football team supposed to practice and prepare for games? The offense plays against the defense. It’s a new HC and staff and the start of preseason, idiot brains! Good luck to Leftwich as a coach, BTW.
