“He Still Picks Up The Phone And He Calls Me”

June 19th, 2019

Gerald McCoy was talking Bucs today on national television. And per the recently fired and re-hired Pro Bowler, he is still mentoring America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, and is wondering who will step up to lead the Bucs in his absence.

“I mean, when you’re in your fifth year in the NFL, it is time to grow up,” McCoy said of Jameis on FS1. “I believe I laid a big enough foundation for him.”

Jameis was talking to McCoy in recent days and their relationship runs deep, McCoy said, “he still picks up the phone and he calls me.”

McCoy continued: “You’re in your fifth year as a starting quarterback, it is time. I believe everything he’s been through up to this point is for a reason. And where he’s at now, me knowing Jameis, he’s ready to take the next step.  It’s just about, Will he do it?”

It was interesting to hear McCoy sort of reference Jameis as a question mark while he went on to say he believes DeSean Jackson will be a key cog to help put the Eagles back among the NFL elites again.

Jameis and other Bucs have talked recently about how McCoy was the gameday prayer leader and was a huge influence on players in many ways.

That’s great. But Joe feels a little weird about the thought of McCoy talking football with current Bucs. Joe hopes that’s not happening.

When will Gerald stop acting like he is the hero to everyone, he is the toughness… You led a piss pore defense year in year out. Shut your mouth

  2. 813bucboi Says:

fans couldve said the same thing about GMC….in his 5th year, it was time for us to reach the playoffs….it was time for GMC to take the next step…..and he never did it!!!!!!

SUH will show GMC how its done….he’s helped 3 teams make the playoffs and is about to do the same with the bucs!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  4. Stonedbuc Says:

Very telling stuff, basically Jameis is immature as hell and let desean walk all over him. MCCOY saying Winston needs to grow up is a big look in the mirror. If Jameis is not being vocal and is still goofing off 5 years in how long will it take for him to finally realize it’s a big dogs game.

  5. tye Says:

Sure hope one of the other Florida teams is worth watching this season or it’s going to be a miserable football season (NFL anyway)..

  6. Barbosa Says:

Joe knows some insider info on how badly behaved Jackson truly was. Evans wants to win with Winston. I’m hopeful that the Bucs play slightly better defense (not asking a lot) , run the ballmore effectively (asking a lot until I see otherwise), and limit Winston second half oh my God die are down 20 points scenarios. Is it too much to ask Glazers?

  7. Succaneers Says:

IT IS GREAT HE IS COACHING UP AMERICA’S BUST

  8. SOEbuc Says:

It’s bad enough with the continues McCoy articles, Joe. But McCoy is also now a Carolina Panther. My most hated team in our division. It’s like these national media idiots than can’t find anything other than the Golden State Warriors, even though they lost, to talk about and you and Zach are so much better than that.

  9. Bucsfankev Says:

Oh no not another article bout that bum gerald McCoy

  10. DBS Says:

Winston is still a Buc right?

  11. Todd Says:

TMZ has the recording of the call.

Jameis was asking McCoy for the password to the Madden console he left at his house.

  12. Bucsfankev Says:

GERALDINE we have a no return policy here in Tampa and the door hit you in the rear on the way out. It had more hits than you did.

  13. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

If Jameis is turning to McCoy for advice this team is doomed

Draft a replacement and let Jameis backup Cam

  14. BucsBandit Says:

MCCOY & JAMEIS WILL BE TEAMMATES IN CAROLINA NEXT YEAR.

    BOOK IT!

McCoy holds the most records for falling down and getting hurt.cant wait to see barber run all over the place against the stinking Panthers.

  18. Bruce Blahak Says:

OK, I’ve laid off WinSTUNNED for a bit, but any McCoy pleasantries just rattles my chain. WinSTUNNED has used every excuse in the book and finally run out them. He has possibly the best group of receivers in the league and a multitude of coaches – just for him!
4 years is plenty to advance his play and my prediction is that nothing will change and Ryan Griffin becomes our new saviour. He’s getting a 5th year to prove himself. If it’s much of the same(probably), cut the cord, and quick!!!!

  19. Snook Says:

Ugh. More McCoy drivel. So tired of his martyr act. So glad he’s on another team finally.

He’ll last 1 season in Carolina after they see him loaf and see he’s not even worth $8M. They’ll have that benefit as there won’t be a group of fans so emotionally tied to him and coaching staffs worried about what it would do if he’s cut.

Definitely the best off-season move by the Bucs. Other than signing BA.

  20. SOEbuc Says:

^^But I also understand it’s a slow time in the NFL world at the moment^^

-I found this info from a May 22 Bucs.com article so it’s not up to date but I’d like to hear what you thought of the things like new comers Zack Bailey (undrafted free agent), Nate Trewyn (undrafted free agent), Earl Watford (unrestricted free agent) on the O-line in underwear football.

-I can’t remember if you wrote something up about Anthony Nelson. Finding a good DE is very important for the 2019 season.

-Apparently Liedtke was working out at all spots, which makes me happy cus I’m a Liedtke fan.

No doubt that it’s your rodeo Joe and I’m not a professional sports analyst such as yourself, but I would prefer Bucs small talk over GMC Panther talk any day of the week.

  21. Bruce Blahak Says:

@SOEbuc ….much agreed, there are lots of other things going on with the Bucs. I like this site but the McCoy stuff seems to be click bait or something. Nobody WANTS to talk about that clown and black mark in Bucs history…

  22. Lamarcus Says:

Good. GMC is part of the DJX mob. Glad that all of them are gone playing elsewhere. We didnt need division in the locker

  23. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @Barbosa

Some have heard it the other way around!!!!!!!!!!! We did see the fold like a lawn chair qb freeze out Djax of the offense!!!! We did see Djax running wide azzz open, while jmiss was staring down another target!!!!!! We do know that jw3 camp has leaked info to pass the blame!!!!!!!!!

until we know other wise, other rumors will be taken with a grain of salt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Excuse for Jameis #7,492 Learned too much from GMC on how to be a leader

  25. Race to 10 Says:

Dude is clueless and I knew he would say something stupid which is why I didnt want to listen. He laid the foundation hahaha. He actually think he was better than he really was. So glad he is infecting the panthers

  26. Mike Johnson Says:

Players make lifetime friends with former teammates. Good to see he and Jameis are still kicking it. Of course, you haters here will jump on anything GMC. The guy has a great attitude about life in general and will do well in Carolina. Stop all that hatin and start prayin..Our Bucs do not..repeat their cellar dwelling
    existence.

  27. 813bucboi Says:

@realist says: We did see Djax running wide azzz open…..

    not so sure about that…

but we did see wrs running wide a$$ open against sh!tty smittys defense…..

what week was he canned again?……

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  28. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete (formerly known as 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs Fans') ***Rhealist, louden annoying, & tminimum are the worst posters ever!!! Says:

Stonedbuc was obviously too stoned and missed the point. Gerald said Jameis is ready to take the next step now, and everything he’s been through has been for a reason. Now Jameis and the rest of our team just need to go out there, execute, and Be Great.

  29. Race to 10 Says:

Winston let Jackson walk all over him? It was as bad as letting chris Baker walk in and own Geraldine locker room. Shows how stupid people are to take what this poser is saying as some kind of reveal. Dude is basically grandstanding and I hope they are all paying attention and not gonna allow this guy to play us and look like the all star he never was

  30. Hodad Says:

The guy who has a life size Batman doll thinks it’s time for Jameis to grow up.

  31. Buczilla Says:

McCoy was good and sometimes very good, but I didn’t see much, if any leadership from the outside looking in. A leader would have never allowed HIS quarterback to be bullied (that’s my guess from the snippets I have picked up) by some crybaby, diva, entitled d**chebag receiver. Hell, he couldn’t even keep that tree humping lowlife in check that he shared a meeting room with.

Tough love in a leadership role is mandatory and sometimes confronting someone head on who has gone way off the path is required. Being nice and encouraging folks is easy in my opinion and doesn’t cost you anything. Putting your own skin in the game is what makes a true leader. IMHO McCoy failed miserably at this.

  32. SCBucsFan Says:

Buczilla I think McCoy was a very good player but not a good leader. What some on this board can’t fathom is you can be a very good player but not be a good leader.

  33. passthebuc Says:

Back to the cap space problem, if anyone pays JW more than 10K a year, they are crazy. They are crazy to pay him this year. They cannot compete with the cap space problem and paying JW that kind of money. But I guess who cares

  34. Durango 95 Says:

As usual, more self-serving comments from McCoy. The local media eats this crap up. And has for years. It’s actually comical who well he’s got ’em bamboozled. It’s disappointing but I get the sense he’s got Joe hoodwinked as well.

  35. Jmarkbuc Says:

    SCBucsfan

1 tackle per game is neither a very good player, nor a good leader..not for 13million per.

  36. stvcl Says:

bwah ha ha ha ha ha! Leader?…what the eff do you know about being a leader geraldweenie93? You were NEVER a leader on the team. So happy to see you in another uniform.

“He has, possibly, the best group of wideouts in the league.” Lmao!!!!!! I just CANT WITH STUPID FANS. AND ZERO O-line, or run game, means wideouts mean ZILCH, dummy. Football fans are remedial. Sorry, Jameis. 😂😂😁😁

  40. Tval Says:

Jameis will get around $20-$25M a year. FROM THE BUCS!!! $10???? What WORLD are you living in??!

  41. Dlavid Says:

The only foundation he gave JW was s**** ! Please someone in the locker room keep that loser out of our building !

  42. DooshLaRue Says:

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

    Where’s Fancy Man?

He needs to be defending his hero.

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

  43. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Gerald,, i have stood up for you many times…

But I do not NEED you to tell me about how Jameis needs to step up.

Really?? This team has badly needed YOU to step up more than you did, over the past 2 years.

Frankly, i have a TON more confidence in Jameis competing and performing….. than i do you.

  44. Pit of Misery Says:

What foundation? It’s ok to take plays off? It’s ok to say “my bad” if he throws a touchdown? It’s ok to lose and still dance on the sideline? It’s ok to take a hit and say “ I know you didn’t mean it”?

  45. Tom T. Says:

Please stop posting about panther players.

  46. down in the dirt doug Says:

BRUCE LOOKED AT MANY HOURS OF TAPE ON GERALD AND HE DIDN’T LIKE WHAT HE SAW.I think they just went through the motions of offering Gerald a reduced contract.I never got the impression that the Bucs wanted Gerald at more than 6 mil.I never remember saying,”ok Gerald ,take over the game, big guy”.He became the invisible man in most games. Now he acts like he was a great warrior leading the team into battle.

  47. Bucnjim Says:

If Winston has matured as a man I have huge expectations for him as a player. Yes it has taken him longer then most would like but boys become men at different rates. It’s his passion for the game that has kept me WISHING he would become the man and leader this team needs. If this entire team can play with both passion and maturity we will surprise a lot of fans this year.

  48. Bucnjim Says:

Also Jameis if McCoy calls transfer him to the nearest DQ! Tell him the new flavor is the McCoy Mud Fudge he will love it.

  49. Bucsace Says:

GMC should be a cautionary tale for this franchise……pouring $100 million into a player who vastly underperformed…..hope they remember this episode when the decision to sign Jameis to a massive contract comes around

  50. pick6 Says:

I would take brotherhood lessons from Gerald all day. Leadership lessons, not so much.

  51. Patrick in SC Says:

I was pretty indifferent about him for a while in terms of the impact of him not being with the team anymore and going to a division rival. Everything that I’ve seen and read since he left really just drives home Beckles’ point before where he basically said who cares about the heart and soul of a bad team moving on. This dude’s attitude is trash. I’m not interested in what he says anymore
