“When He Wants To Be A Dominant Player… “

May 22nd, 2019

Too much loafing?

Gee, here’s something you never heard about former Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

Joe has heard a whole lot of respected NFL types talk about the Bucs virtually flipping GMC for Ndmamukong Suh. And there is a clear, consistent pattern from virtually each one:

Suh is not a big effort kind of guy unless he is motivated. And when the mood strikes him, he puts out and when he does, he’s a beast.

That, on face value, doesn’t seem like a Bucco Bruce Arians/accountability guy.

Field Yates of BSPN discussed this on “NFL Live” yesterday.

“Here is the reality of Ndamukong Suh: The book is fairly well-read and pretty obvious here to us,” Yates began. “When he wants to be a dominant player, he has it in him to crank it up and be a dominant player. We saw it at times during the playoffs last year. Fantastic against the Dallas Cowboys in that game that [the Rams] won. Fantastic or solid in the game against the Saints that they won in very dramatic fashion.

“When he doesn’t want to be that dominant, there are times where it looks like he hasn’t been that dominant. He looks like he is checked out. That’s part of the reason he departed and was a castaway from Miami.

“On a one-year deal, you would think — you would think — the guy will be motivated. So ultimately, these paydays are numbered for veterans who are on the wrong side of 30. So if he plays his best, this could be an impact addition.”

Since Arians came to Tampa Bay he has been preaching accountability. He has a reputation for getting in guys’ grills and reaming them out for loafing. So Arians brings in a guy who across the league has a rap for blowing off plays if he doesn’t feel like putting out?

Joe hopes Arians works his charms and magic that have done so well with veterans in the past and that rubs off on Suh.

The Bucs’ defense is bad enough. Last thing the defense needs is for another Albert Haynesworth, who excelled in two things: face-stomping opponents for 15-yard flags and cashing checks.

BS Joe you have been living in denial over cancer93 for a decade.. cancer93 loafed his entire career against the run but for whatever reason joe is blind to his mancrush…. so if cancer93 was as perfect as you want him to be why did all the coaching staffs fail building around him???? Why did all the free agents brought in to help her REGRESS???? You have given this bum a free pass for a decade and all he has done is lead basement title run after basement title run with 3 to 5 blown leads or blowouts per year. you act like this pos was perfect when he was the undisputed leader of the losing culture. i simply don’t get you and your love of losers.

Son of a biscuit too much is being made out of the Suh pick up.

He’s a stop gap. Not long term.

I’m sure Arians is more than aware of who Suh is and what he’s getting.

  4. Buc1987 Says:

    7-9

  5. Larry Says:

D-Rome…why are you so optimistic? ;-(

  6. TampaBay55 Says:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, WHATEVER!!! As far as I see it, any loafing by Suh is nullified by the fact that Gerald’s used to get gassed and ask to come out of crucial moments in games…. the game against Oakland (with the playoffs on the line) in 2016 comes to mind. All we had to do was keep the Raiders out of the endzone late on the late in the game, yet I saw Geraldine wave the sideline MULTIPLE times so he could get a blow. The Raiders drove right down the field and tied it up then proceeded to put the game away, thanks largely to a JAB penalty. I had tickets to that game and was sitting in the south endzone. I was in complete disbelief that our “Star” DT would ask to come out with the season essentially on the line. Everybody remembers the JAB penalty from that game but no one talks about Geraldine’s soft mentality…..

Suh does what Suh wants… even BA and Bowels knew/know this…. better get him some help on the interior because he ain’t going to carry anyone else’s game

  8. Mort Says:

I just wanna see a one on one between Suh and EDS. If I remember the garbage, I’m sure EDS does too.

  9. DB55 Says:

Unlike McCoy who excelled at one thing: cashing checks.

Gimme a break! You trying to tell me McIceCream went 100% on every play? CHILD PLEASE!! NEXT!

Fast forward to 1:30- watch Clinton McDonald hustle down the field to try and make the play then watch McIceCream quit on the play completely.

the way joe blindly supports cancer93 and the fact both bonzi and joe are writers I am 100% convinced joe turns into bonzi after a few bud lights…. the real question is will joe make an appearance in the next midget elf erotica novel. maybe has Hawaiians lover, just saying it all fits when you look at the big picture.

  11. Costa Rica John Says:

With all these 1 year prove it deals I sure hope they all excel. When they get signed by other teams we can get a few extra draft picks as compensation. That is if we can stay out of free agency for a year. Drafting your own guys and good coaching are the proper way to build a good team.

  12. Tye Says:

When they are 1-4 or 2-6 this season, I guess he’ll have plenty of times ‘taking plays off!’

every player is a stop gap when the average career is less than 6 years therefore it makes no sense at all to fall in love with players that will be gone in 6 years or less. bucfan has had so little success they fall in love with any POS who makes 3 or 4 plays per year and can’t let go of players that should be upgraded it’s a sad cycle of failure

  14. pelbuc Says:

GMC is a class guy but an average player and certainly not a leader. BA must have seen the dancing GMC and KWON did after stopping an opponent for the first time while down by 3 tds. This defense has needed a mentality change for quite some time. Bucs need to grab another Dlinemen, cut JPP and possibly trade Brate.

what’s the difference pal…. they have been worse than that for a decade with cancer93 and lvd wearing the C’s…. stop falling for losers…. raise your standards…

  16. Joe in Michigan Says:

He woulda chewed up and spit out Koetter. Won’t do that with Brucie Boy in charge.

  17. GoBuxFla Says:

The hilarity of it all? We still have Jason “I luv Kickers” Licht as GM.

We are screwed as long as he is in charge.

  18. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Tmax … that was funny but I was thinking that McCoy is probably one of those off that record sources that Jose wants to keep open for Bucs insights as well as elsewhere…. or you could be right:- You guys crack Joe up. –Joe

  19. Clean House Says:

    Suh= Answer93. ???

Time will tell. Maybe He’ll face plant Evan Smith off the roster.

  20. Eric y Says:

Keep writing these negative articles about suh… I hope you ask this question to him and he does an Evan smith to you lol

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

I don’t why my fellow Buc fans are so excited. Suh is just about at the end. He will play well in spurts. But he ain’t sackin no QB’s.

  22. tmaxcon Says:

joe she’s gone you don’t have to be afraid anymore you can drop the facade and accept reality.

  23. MarkV Says:

Albert Haynesworth? Now that is a stupid comparison Joe…

  24. Getaclue Says:

I’ll take that and a player that turns it up during meaningful games and makes impact plays vs someone that isn’t available every game cause they have boo boos Suh and JPP play through

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There is some good news and bad news here……the good news is….at least he has a higher gear when he cranks it up……the bad news is that he decides when to use it.
Unlike JPP who cranks up a higher gear on every play…..I suspect Devin White is that way also.

Here is where good coaching comes in…..if Suh wants to play for Bowles, there is a good chance he wants to play well.

  26. unbelievable Says:

McCoy vs Suh stats from the last few years…

    McCoy
    2018: 6 sacks, 6 TFL, 21 QB hits
    2017: 6 sacks, 13 TFL, 24 QB hits
    2016: 7 sacks, 5 TFL, 14 QB hits
    2015: 8 sacks, 8.5 TFL, 17 QB hits

    Suh
    2018: 4.5 sacks, 4 TFL, 19 QB hits
    2017: 4.5 sacks, 9 TFL, 12 QB hits
    2016: 5 sacks, 11 TFL, 17 QB hits
    2015: 6 sacks, 17 TFL, 20 QB hits

So McCoy was better at getting to QBs, Suh is better at getting to running backs.

Good thing we’ve got a bunch of other pass rushers! Oh wait…

Fingers crossed he’s “motivated” this season. #ItsABucsLife

  27. Wesley Says:

Starting to wonder why he isn’t signed yet? Has another team showed interest at last second?

  28. Chris K Says:

Tmaxipad, WTF is wrong with you? Serious question..

  29. Lamarcus Says:

    Joe

    Get outta here man.

  30. Bird Says:

    Unbelievable

I’ve been trying to make this point all day
    Stats almost identical
McCoy maybe a little better at getting to qb
Suh a little better at stopping the run.

It’s obvious though that Suh was on better dlines
McCoy had zero help except JPP last year
Is Suh nastier – no question. And Bucs need to toughen up.
But being meaner doesn’t mean better

Now it’s clear McCoy was not worth 13 mil a year based on recent production.
And we save 3 mil with Suh who is very similar in what they bring.
I just hope 3 mil is worth the potential headache of Suh
He has been a headache everywhere he has been
Teams can’t wait to get him out of the building. He has problems with teammates . He has problems with coaches. He has problems when he is not labeled “the guy”

Louis riddick whose opinion I listen too … said the same thing this morning “ Suh is a good player when he wants to be “

  31. El_Buc941 Says:

MM if Vita Vea has a break out year and Suh shows up and dominates this defense could be a force to reckon with. Now imagine if JPP gets back on the field this year along with another great year from Nassib. Lets hope those rookies fit right in and that LVD and White can dominate the blitz. This team seems to be building up a great defense on paper. Lets see Coach Bowles Magic.

  32. LakeLand Says:

I wonder how Evan Smith feel about the signing of Suh?

He was stomped by Suh on a dirty play

  33. Jean Lafitte Says:

Suh will stay fresh. He’s not asked to be an every down player. He will work in a rotation. Taking plays off shouldn’t be an issue.

  34. Bird Says:

    Db55

And I honestly can’t think of one signature play that McCoy won a game.
You found one kinda for suh. One. Big deal.
They are very similar players. But one is a dik and you think that makes a difference That’s fine.

It’s funny. That has highlight Is when he played for fins.
My buddy is a huge fins fan.

When story came out about Suh to bucs … he texted me “ good luck with that overhyped guy”

  35. Jean Lafitte Says:

So what. If Evan Smit wants to make a deal out of it, I’m sure he’ll get stomped again.

  36. DB55 Says:

McCoy had no help last year yet Vita Vea had more solo tackles and only played half a season or so. Nassib had a career year and JPP cane with 12.5 sacks. But yea no help.

    Smh!!!

  37. Bird Says:

I will say from what I read up on Suh that he can rush from outside as well
    So there is another plus.

  38. DB55 Says:

This is how insane these McIceCream fans are some dude said McCoy belongs on the ROH over Simeon Rice. Super bowl winner Simeon Rice! One of the leaders of one of the BEST defenses in NFL history Simeon Rice.

  39. tmaxcon Says:

getting rid of cancer93 and signing suh was a beautiful step in the right direction and also two legs of the ultimate goal…

winston leads team to 11-5 and suh get’s 12 sacks along the way… that would be the only thing that can top the last couple of days of reading low standard choirboy loving bucfan melt down over the loss of the crying clown… watching the winston haters eat $**t this season is going to be equally as enjoyable as cancer93 being gone.

    hey bonzi,

i am confused where are the multiple high round draft picks???? You promised — LOL

oh I see the bidding war is awful intense to pay cancer93 15 million.

  40. Pittsshore Says:

Looks like the Bucs will be handing out free money again for a washed up vet. That’s what they do. The players and their agents laugh about it all the time. Doormats always get stepped on and that’s what we are, a damn doormat.

  41. Ndog Says:

That’s the key difference he actually can be dominate when he wants to.

  42. PriMech54 Says:

I’ll keep screaming it from the mountain tops

it’s not about “who’s gonna get more sacks” between Suh and McCoy in this defense

Suh is the better fit schematically because he’s A)cheaper and they need to sign the rookies, B) he’s the better run defender with better gap integrity which is more important for down linemen in Bowles defense C) he has more of an alpha mentality being tough nosed in the trenches, D) he’s MUCH, MUCH more durable and E) he’s actually experienced in playing in a 3-4 and was somewhat productive doing so even.

It’s almost like simple math. Say it with me guys… “2+2=4…..”

  43. Totally Exonerated Says:

We can’t do any worse with Suh. The worst we can do is the same but more entertained.

  44. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

Until he officially signs, he is not a Buc yet.

  45. Defense Rules Says:

@Lamarcus … “Joe, Get outta here man.” You win the prize Lamarcus. All I’m seeing is silliness lately on JBF.com about who’s better, Suh or GMC (as if it REALLY matters in May), BUT … to tell THE OWNER of JBF.com to ‘get out of here’ is a gem.

  46. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

McCoy said he’d be back… so maybe he and Suh will play on the same DL this year… that’ll make the McCreamer’s happy and the Suh dogs… then we can sort it out again in 2020

  47. unbelievable Says:

@clod, that’s true. LOL that should actually be the new Bucs team slogan:

    “We can’t do any worse”

  48. BigMacAttack Says:

Hey Joe, you’re staff is killing it. I’m so proud of what you two have accomplished. Ira, DB55, and others. The Bucs owe yo a big debt of gratitude for keeping fans on board. You’ve really built an awesome brand. I think this offseason has been your best. Not as good as getting butt dialed by Rachel Watson, but pretty darn good.

  49. Race to 10 Says:

Man you comparing dude to Alberto Haynesworth based on media talk and you don’t think something is wrong with that? Poo pooing every move this offseason has been the staple here. You know something you didn’t hear about Geraldine, he was a beast against the run. Suh and I dare say DeSean Jackson would never do to BA what they did or would do to say Dirk Koetter especially with the guy saying what intrigued him about coming here was the defensive coach. I understand the reporting but I’m not calling them out I’m pointing to your analysis because they didn’t go that far.

  50. LongSeason Says:

  51. webster Says:

How can anyone say that mccoy and suh stats are relatively the same? I guess you can get away with that when you are an uneducated buc fan speaking to other uneducated buc fans. Sure sack numbers are similar, but its more than sacks. Last i checked, suh has 481 combined tackles to gmc 296 combined tackles. Thats almost 200 more tackles. Tell me in what world is 200 tackle difference considered close? Only in jbf land i guess. Smdh

  54. Bucnjim Says:

Huge Changes needed to be made and the team is making them. The entire D top to bottom had to be gutted because you can’t cure quitting. The only constant we’ve seen these last ten years is blowouts from the D rolling over. Not sure if Suh will help hope he does. I would have like to have gone 100% young and let them run with it.

  55. Isaac haggins Says:

No doubt Suh plays average at times and then turns it on and dominates when motivated or pissed …………. The reason that is great is because Gerald was never pissed, never dominant ( lil flashy but never dominant) and could never ever stop a third and one !!! At least Suh can when he decides and he does decide much more than McCoy to whip someone’s ass , just ask Marpet !!!

  56. DBS Says:

Just hire a defensive consultant. He can help keep an eye on that side of things.

  57. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“The official NFL transactions report for Wednesday does not reveal that Suh has joined the Buccaneers. And, as we’ve learned time and again over the years, no deal is done until it’s done.” – PFT

  58. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If the deal goes through, the Bucs only saved $3 million according to reports. That isn’t much.

  59. Isaac haggins Says:

@ DB 55 , I’ve been seeing and watching that sht since Year two when he was coddled and told sacks aren’t important just affect the play !!! Typical dip sht jock coaches trying to win a friend and this is where it went south and Gerald was allowed to become an actor !!! AND he never looked back !!!

  60. Clean House Says:

The only thing better than signing Suh, would be him pulling a Parcells on Licht, and standing him up at the altar.

This would be a great way to see Licht crash and burn and finally be shown the door.

This would be 100 times better than even a playoff birth this year.

  61. richbucsfan Says:

  62. BigMacAttack Says:

DB55, Simeon really did it right. I miss him and we was so cool as a person. Beast on the field.

  63. Totally Exonerated Says:

    Unbelievable lol

Say Suh kicks a guy in the dik on a play. Joe is very talented and can write dozens of articles about that play alone. An article about what Beckles says. One about Sapp high fiving his boy. Ome about Pete Schrager taking off his Bucs hate in disgust. One about Screaming Steven A screaming about it. One about how popcorn eating… Peter King clutching his pearls and being absolutely appalled by it. All the commenters will take their predictable sides like a middle school dance and fight for the whole season. Even if we go 4-10 we’ll still be totally entertained!!

Clean house yes you are a true bucs fan. You would rather have suh ditch the bucs and Licht get fired. Than have the bucs make the playoffs. So you would rather us have a losing record and fire Licht than have a winning record make the playoffs and keep Licht. If we make the playoffs that means he has put together a good team that was just badly coached. We can all agree koetter and his staff did not even come close to getting the most of the players. You could even say they held them back by trying to make the players fit into there defensive scheme. Instead of changing the scheme to fit the players.

  75. Snook Says:

Its amazing how this site stumps for McCoy. Even after he’s gone.

If Suh takes plays off, the McCoy took even more plays off.

Funny to publish all of the Suh criticism but fail to acknowledge what most of us already know about how McCoy plays. But Gerald bought movie tickets for kids so it was ok for him to loaf.

    What a joke.

  76. One of the ham and eggers Says:

    JeffBuc-

The jury has long been out on me for Licht.
That statement says that I clearly don’t believe in his nonsense and incompetence. He’s always the last one to the party. I am a fan and it seems easy to play armchair GM, but we should have gotten Suh a long while back and if we felt MCCoy was the wrong personality

, we should have gotten some value long ago. This guy is a reactor and should be dismissed. Just as people saw the writing on the wall for Mcoy- It’s easy to see for Gump. The owners have absolutely no foresight except when it comes to raking in cash.
