Unimpressed With Bucco Bruce?

May 8th, 2019

NFL.com scribe thinks Bucs will regress

Joe cannot remember a time when so many Bucs fans have been turned off by a recent draft.

While the NFL draft is a time for hope and new blood, and while some fans love the pick of Deacon Jones/Jack Lambert/Ronnie Lott Devin White at No. 5 overall, the way the rest of the draft played out sent many Bucs fans into a deep depression.

And that seems to have spread to the greater Los Angeles area, as well, where NFL.com is housed.

Now last year even though the Bucs were bad, the offense was sizzling. Well, one element of the offense was. The Bucs’ passing offense led the NFL in passing with 320.3 yards a game and overall the Bucs offense ranked third with 415.5 yards a game.

But despite adding one of the best quarterback gurus in recent years in head coach Bucco Bruce Arians, Chris Wesseling of NFL.com is unmoved. Picking the top-10 offenses for the 2019 season, Wesseling doesn’t have the Bucs anywhere in the top-10.

Joe isn’t sure why. Is it because the Bucs basically did nothing to the running game?

Is it because malcontent wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who basically did nothing after the third week of the season aside from destroying the locker room, is that popular of a guy for the PlayStation crowd? Or is it because of the real loss of underrated Adam Humphries?

  1. Bruce Blahak Says:

I don’t know, maybe a barren roster and overrated QB come to mind…

  2. Seminole Bill Says:

Adam Humphries was a real loss.

  3. Bucnjim Says:

The Bucs have the offense needed whether it’s Barber at RB or not. What they didn’t have last year is discipline! If we scored every time we were in the red zone last year instead of stupid penalties we’d would have been in much better shape.

  4. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Many fans me included want desperately to address THE TRENCHES !!!!
OL & DL with first 4 picks 2 of each for me please….

  5. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Losing Hump and Djax takes away a combined 1630 yards and 10 TD’s (receiving and rushing)

Who did the Bucs replace that production with?

Perriman? His combined career yardage isn’t even 1,000…

I know our fanbase is truly moronic but it’s easy to figure out why the National writers are down on this team

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

Joe- You seem to be leading this charge of late. I mean, what gives with the under-handed knocks on Devin White?!
People are whining because the Bucs didn’t draft who THEY wanted, that’s why!
    Too bad! I’m all in.

  7. Jean Lafitte Says:

They better put up a lot of points per game if they want to win. 22 points a game won’t get it done, especially now that opposing QB’s will have all day to pick apart an infantile secondary. There may be some future diaper dandy’s but most are 1st and 2nd year players that’ll be pitted against veteran QB’s in Brees, Ryan, and Newton.

  8. Lord Cornelius Says:

It’s because the Bucs freaking suck and have sucked for a long time.

You’d have to be a nut job to be a national reporter and randomly predict great things for the Bucs when history proves otherwise.

It’s the safest opinion in sports.

That’s why I am wondering who all these “sheep” are that Realist refers to? Do you really even have a pulse on this fan base?

We are all mad / confused / concerned and at best hopeful (which you should be if you’re a fan. Hope does not have to equal delusion). That is the state of the franchise right now.

  9. Todd Says:

Who cares about this dipsh!t’s opinion?!

  10. wausa Says:

Actually Joe NFL.com was impressed with the Bucs draft. They ranked it the 9th best draft and gave it an A- grade.

  11. miken Says:

We Weren’t a top 10 Offense last year. We were 13thin points and that sucks considering the firepower we had and the almost 50 spot we put up in week 1.

  12. VA Tom Says:

I think it’s just the repeating optics. New Coach. Hires staff he’s worked with. Coaching moves don’t appear outwardly innovative on the surface. Drafting (largely questionable talent) to fill obvious holes. Unable to draft effectively to shore up future areas of need. Star player hurt in offseason. Solid division rivals. SEntrenched high quality player on the outs with the organisation. Lack of success with salary cap and free agency. Free agent acquisitions signed short term. 2+/- months of striaght away games.

  13. BucsBandit Says:

It’s obvious what the Bucs need to do this upcoming season…

    It’s TANK time.

The Bucs are like one of those NBA times (like the 76ers and Bucks used to be) that were trapped in mediocrity for decades.

The Bucs need a major reset and new Cap Management approach to build a consistent winning foundation to build upon.

Step #1: Get rid of Winston, the ultimate underachiever. Just can’t pay this guy $30M/year in a long-term contract. That would destroy the team from being able to build a competitive, strong foundation of a team.

Step #2: Tank the 2019 NFL season in order to draft Tua or another QB in the Top 2.

Step #3: From here forward, utilize the Belichick Method of building your team. Strategically do deals that land you Compensatory Picks so you can replenish your roster with low-cap talent on a consistent basis in addition to your own standard Draft picks. Dump players at their peaks right before they turn the ‘age’ deteriorating corner. Patriots have been masters at this.

Step #4: Focus on Free Agent signings for positions that have the highest risk (and longer odds) of being able to develop into dominant players… corners and DE/DL players. Those players consistently are the hardest to draft for all teams. So just BUY the top proven talent after they’re proven.

Step #5: Immediately get rid of any cancerous locker room players if they ever occur. Maintain the mindset of the team without distractions. Build a culture around professionalism.

  14. Jimmy Says:

Hard to disagree. Coaching can only do so much and the roster is worse than last year. And now JPP is gone.

  15. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

DJAX did nothing after Week 3?

    Week 4 -112 yards
    Week 6 -77 yards
    Week 8 -68 yards
    Week 10- 67 yards

Come on Joe do your research before spouting off in accurate stats

  16. BFFL Says:

Who cares…Not worried about the offense. They’re good enough for playoffs.

  17. wausa Says:

    @miken

It is hard to score points when you have a bad kicker and a poor running game to go along with a horrendous defense that does not give the offense a short field to work. Bucs had a great passing game, but were not a well rounded team.

  18. stpetebucsfan Says:

Another “furriner”. Dudes from LA are more familiar with what is going on at the Mons than at OBP.

  19. Bob in Brandon Says:

Maybe someday a positive article may appear here…..wait, who am I kidding lol

  20. westernbuc Says:

Probably losing Koetter and Monken has more to do with this than anything, but not to worry, we still have RoJo!

  21. T REX Says:

The offense wasn’t that good. Who honestly thinks this is a playoff team?

  22. LakeLand Says:

    3-13

    Book it

  23. miken Says:

Odviously Chris Wessiling at nfl.com has game footage of Jameis Winston and Rojo and access to the 2019 draft records to write something like that.

  24. Todd Says:

    @trex

I think the Bucs are a playoff team!

    10-6, Baby…10-6!

  25. Dewey Selmon Says:

I was under the impression out new coaching staff was so good they could coach up the secondary with what we had, I understand drafting a CB, but to go CB,CB,Safety and not improve other areas of the roster is reckless to me. So we couldn;t coach up the secondary and now I’m to believe they can coach up the OL and RB’s? Not buying it. Risner and D Henderson would of had the fan base more excited than what we went with. All eyes on on new and (maybe) improved secondary.

  26. Jim Says:

Is there any stat other than yardage gained that proves the offense was good? And didn’t Fitz pump that up by passing over 400 yards per in the first three games? Fitz is gone, BTW…

  27. SkBucsfan Says:

I am not overly excited by our seemingly lack of growth through free agency and the draft. I also don’t have a lot of faith in the coaches based on their limited success. However, I will wait and see and hope I am proven wrong

nobody at one buc place has any clue what is going or control over any aspect of the franchise so yes once again low standard bucfan shoots the messenger. this franchise can not be defended. the on and all field results are jerry springer esque not a normal professional sports franchise. bucs are small market nfl charity case but that fits perfectly with your wealth redistribution ideology so how’s that working out in the win loss column. the only column that matters….

  30. SCBucsFan Says:

Todd, re the first article on JPP today and the conspiracy theories in this forum, believe me now?

  31. Buccfan37 Says:

Opinions are like elbows and a●●holes, everybody has one.

  32. SCBucsFan Says:

Actually Buccfan37 I have 2 elbows, not one

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The offense needs a better running game…..better production in the red-zone, fewer turnovers and penalties….other than that, it’s fine.

  34. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

@ T REX – “The offense wasn’t that good. Who honestly thinks this is a playoff team? ”

Offense was 2nd in passing and 5th overall for offense. Yes we have a legit offense. If the defense can improve to league average, yes it is possible to make the playoff.

  35. Clean House Says:

Humphries should have been a huge priority.
This dunce clown king Licht is beyond dumb, His blank look should be next to the word Incompetence in the dictionary.

    Clean House

  36. SCBucsFan Says:

Clean House who you cutting to sign Humphries? Don’t say McCoy, he’s getting cut to sign draft picks.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

    7-9.

  38. Buc4evr Says:

You win in the trenches and the Bucs didn’t really address the O-line or D-line problems in the draft. Now with the cap situation, GMC, and JPP, it looks like the Bucs are in the tank yet again. I truly expect Jason Gump to do very little to address this situation other than get a few guys with little experience off of some other team’s practice squad. Our GM is ranked next to the last in the NFL and it shows.

  39. passthebuc Says:

people need to learn to chill

  40. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

If this season starts going south fast then it ultimately sucks that there is a GM who is probably done after this season. Realistically if we had a legit GM and or president and the season is going south then you trade winston to a contender who needs a qb due to injury and get a #1 from them. The bucs start sliding it is time to take the ride and grab a few stud defensive players and tank for trevor lawrence in 2021

  41. doolnutts Says:

Guys… FYI… Everyone is entitled to their opinions but I want to point out something that is not up for debate and needs to be realized. The NFL metric that decides what “rank” a teams offense and defense is yardage, not points scored for or aginst. Yes, that is a very important thing to consider overall but the way the NFL grades a defense/offense is by the yardage so Joe is, in fact, correct we were the 3rd offense out of 32… period end of story.

  42. No expert Says:

For those who said it was good we passed on Greedy William’s because he didnt tackle I would encourage you to watch some Central Michigan game film. Sean Bunting could certainly be on the list as well. Didnt watch every game but did not see him come up to make a tackle, usually dragging some one down. Not endorsing Greedy just not sure what we say in Bunting. Hope he works out Go Bucs.

  43. T REX Says:

doolnutts…how many games can you win by winning the yardage? Help us out…

  44. Dan Says:

Joe. Our roster is significantly worse. Why wouldn’t we regress?

  45. Negative Nancy Says:

Because Licht is a dummy with a lucky resume, and even if they get rid of him, the Idiot Sons will sign some other dummy.

  51. jmarkbuc Says:

The Glazers (Malcolm) got their start as slum lords of Fl. trailer parks, while residing in Rochester.

Now they run a low budget trailer park known as OBP, while residing in Manchester.

The UK is where the real money is, the Bucs have just become a very well paying side hustle.

  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Don’t blame Licht for this off season. His moves were never this bad. This is all Arians.

Even historically, he has messed up drafts.

  53. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We should have kept Monken and hired Mike McCarthy.

  54. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

3-13 sounds about right as the bucs gave ZERO depth up front with any adequate backups anywhere. The bucs have rbs that are all at best 3rd team or practice players. Have Mike Evans on offense and then maybe OJ and that is it. The defense is horrible and drafted a bunch of dbs that will not contribute if they are any good for at least another year…O/U on Barry Arians getting health problems by August 1

  55. doctor_berto Says:

Unless Jameis somehow turns into an All-Pro this year, its gonna be another loonggg season.

Truth is 98% of “fans” are morons that just repeat what other people say. I hate fan voting with things like the Pro-Bowl and I certainly don’t want fan voting running the GM spot of the team.

  62. T REX Says:

    Munch, repeat this…Mark Dominik…
    Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2009-2013 28 52

    Jason Licht
    Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014-2018 27 53

That is THE SUCK. Rainman can see those numbers suck and suck harder.

  63. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Joe cannot remember a time when so many Bucs fans have been turned off by a recent draft.” Everyone has an opinion Joe, and it is your website, so you get to lead the negative takes on this year’s draft … just like you’ve been doing since April 25th when the Bucs selected Devin White. Sniping & whining is unbecoming for both journalists AND fans.

I see that you let loudmouth louden out of your dungeon. Understandable decision since he makes you seem not QUITE so negative nowadays.

  64. Sport Says:

I’ve stopped taking any of you Negative Nancys seriously, including ‘Shill Joe’.

TBBF remains a steady hand, but it looks like we’ve lost Lord Corn to the dark side.

Until real football 🏈 starts, to keep my own sanity, I forgive and will hold space for all my JBF Brothers and Sisters to exercise their God given right to speak there mind. Even you louden.

Let it Rip!!! The offseason sucks for all of us.

  65. LargoBuc Says:

Any fan thats paying attention can’t help but be concerned. Regardless if we run a 3-4 or 4-3, how exactly are we going to rush the qb? Which one of our rookie/2nd year corners is going to step up? Is Hargreaves going to be the leader of this group or is he still best suited as a “nickel” corner?
And what about the offense? We did zero to upgrade. Is Jameis suddenly going to be able to carry this offense, with no run game, a sub par oline and fewer weapons?
I get the coaching will supposedly be improved but jeez. Hope Arians dosen’t have health problems come December.

  66. SCBucsFan Says:

DR, until White shows he was the pick and Allen/Oliver were media darlings who make the occasional big play this site will say the draft was horrible. Had we “built the trenches” the same naysayers would complain watching Joe Dirt chase McCaffery and Kamara next year and the secondary repeatedly get torched. Its the Bucs fan way.

  67. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs and Excuses are synonomous with each other! Alls I can say is Bucs better win. If not, we will ride Arians out of town on a rail just like his predesessors.
jason Licht gotta go with him to..Head 1st.

  68. MadMax Says:

I just dont know and have stopped putting much time into it anymore. I love the pick of White of course, but the rest left me frustrated. Either Arians and Bowles are def on their game and we’ll see at least a .500 season, or we’re back around a top 5 pick again. But watch the joe who hates the pick of Mr. White, who keeps using the underhanded insults in lofty expectations, blame our pick of Devin as the resson for a losing season if it happpens….unreal how deep seeded temper tantrums can run in a supposedly grown fn man…

  69. down in the dirt doug Says:

Lord Cornelius–your last paragraph sums up my feelings.I would add “deeply hurt”, to the statement. We must add a quality runner and a defensive end or we will not exit the basement of our division.

  72. Oregonbucsfan Says:

In the past I have obsessed over the Bucs draft. Read articles, mock drafts, blogs, etc. This year with so many “hot” prospects it was a let down drafting Alexander’s (who many raved about last year) replacement. So much for a team upgrade.
Many of you think it was a good pick, so we’ll see. What really struck me was the second pick>>>”Who?” Same for the rest. This is Licht’s last stand. If the Bucs stink it up again (as I believe) the true fans should boycott the stadium until the “kids” hire a true Pro football GM.
Reading about mock drafts do not make me a pro, however, I have seen year after year of gross mismanagement. I think I could draft from my armchair and do as good. I’m losing my enthusiasm that makes a person a fan. This year may be the time I’m a fan of a different team.

  80. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Anonymous, put your name on it.

  81. TOM Says:

PLAYOFFS! PLAYOFFS! Are you kidding me? BA is living in the past with the coaches he hired & the ex players he coached. Time to get with the present. Then there’s are great GM. Maybe the worst in NFL history.
