Lessons Start Early For Sean Murphy-Bunting

May 11th, 2019

Bucs second-round pick, rookie cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting

If there’s a lot of pressure on a specific Buccaneers assistant coach, it’s cornerbacks coach Kevin Ross.

He’s got two rookies in his stable and Vernon Hargreaves is the veteran player the newcomers are leaning on for guidance.

In addition, Ross has to mop up the mess left by former Bucs cornerbacks coach Jon Hoke, who was overmatched.

According to second-round pick cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting, Ross has come firing out of the NFL Draft. The rookie painted a picture yesterday at One Buc Palace of a position coach determined to extract everything he can from his players.

“[Ross] called me every single after the draft and just talked football. He’s called me at 6 a.m., 6:30, asking me questions about the playbook, making sure I was on top of my game early on. Because he told me the way I’m coming in, you got to be ready to compete.  You can’t be complacent. You can’t think that you made it. You can’t kind of get that mentality that you don’t have to work hard.”

Murphy-Bunting (who wears the full last name on the back of his jersey) even gave detail about how Ross was barking out defensive calls through the phone in those early morning hours and demanding Murphy-Bunting to reply with his assignment on the play.

Cool stuff. And Joe even thinks it’s great that the kid answered the phone.

I sure hope the D line coach doesn’t think like this….. Softie May start crying!

The secondary players appear to be very good players. It’s only one day but it was a good introduction. I like that they have good length and speed. With CB Carlton Davis being the exception – very different than what we’ve drafted before. Go Bucs!

  5. TOM Says:

People are so naive. Ican’t believe people fall for this BS. Did anyone ever stop to think that the coaches job is also to boost ticket sales. Yea I know, don’t tell me they drafted the next Deion Sanders.

  6. Jean Lafitte Says:

Just from what I watched in his presser, I’d have no problem with him dating my daughter. He seems like a very smart young man. Actually I think all the picks came across as knowledgeable intelligent players that’ll hopefully pickup the pro game without much drop-off.

  7. J Says:

I’m happy for Carlton Davis(as well as everyone else) because of the coaching he will receive and the competition he will have to face. I believe he will thrive and be a much improved player because of it.

3-13 roster with 0-16 owners every year optimists get excited and every year glazers make the optimists look beyond foolish

  9. SCBucsFan Says:

Tom if you think a defensive back coach is concerned with ticket sales to then maybe, just maybe, you are the naive one.

  10. Wesley Says:

Good for him, at 6 a.m. i’m not answering phone calls.

The sun is finally breaking through this offseason at JBF.

This coaching staff is already making an impact on their new leaders.

This draft class will set The tone for our team.

In BA and this Coaching staff I Trust!

Did bunting seem receptive to it or was he kinda immature and annoyed kacy is doing that? Nothing more draining or unmotivating as a coach than having your words continuously fall on deaf ears.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

    Sport

same bs and false hope every damn year sir…. remind me again how many wins BA has in Tamapa????

they deserve NOTHING until they earn it on the field on Sundays everything is meaningless BS that will lead to more nutpunches…. it’s not hate when it’s true

  14. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

I hope we become a consistently winning team with a few more rings. If for nothing else to see if us being a top tier team would get tmax n realist to have any positive comments 🤷‍♂️😂
Love the new motto the #endthedrought from a couple of posters GO BUCS!!!

Tmaxipad and Tom are the same person

  16. AtlBuc Says:

This is what we have been lacking: coaching up. We have the talent but previously, not the coaching.

Its all beautiful nice and cozy..prior to the season. Strawberry fields forever…..
Tip=toe thru the tulips. Until the season starts. I’ll wait..to see if this Defense has changed. Talk is cheap. Find us a QB killer and get off the field defense!

Vernon Hargreaves is the veteran player the newcomers are leaning on for guidance

This may be the scariest / saddest thing I’ve ever read on JBF.
