“Informed Speculation” On JPP

May 28th, 2019

Orthopedist speaks on JPP.

The biggest question with the Bucs defense right now is what will happen with sackmeister Jason Pierre-Paul.

JPP, who had 12.5 sacks last year, the first Bucs defender to get double-digit sacks since Simeon Rice in 2005, was involved in a car wreck just after the draft and fractured his neck. As of this date, the loose timetable for JPP’s return is October or November. Prior to that, JPP is to be re-evaluated by doctors and there may be an update on the timetable.

Of course, neither the Bucs nor JPP’s camp have specified what the injury is. However, an orthopedic surgeon with a great deal of experience treating NFL players believes he knows what the injury is.

Dr. David Chao is a former head physician of the San Diego Chargers and a practicing orthopedic surgeon. He took to his podcast earlier this month, “Pro Football Doc,” to describe what he thinks JPP has.

Per Chao, the nature of the car accident combined with JPP being treated and released from the hospital the same day suggests it is an odontoid fracture.

Chao, who regularly appears on SiriusXM NFL Radio, stressed he has not spoken with JPP or examined JPP, nor has he seen JPP’s medical files. But he added he is offering “informed speculation.”

An odontoid fracture is common in whiplash cases involving car accidents, Chao said. And the current timetable reported for JPP’s return is consistent with the recovery time one who suffered an odontoid fracture, Chao maintained.

“If you read all the [national media] reports and descriptions that Bruce Arians is saying, the coach, I conclude he likely has a Type-2 odontoid fracture,” Chao said. “I’m not making a diagnosis. This is speculation on my part. Informed speculation. Medical examiner stuff. A hunch. A theory.

“It can’t be a very bad or a displaced fracture because if there was, there is no way the hospital would have let him go.

“It was clearly a non-displaced fracture.”

Chao noted in the medical community there is controversy whether a non-displaced fracture needs surgery or not.

Chao added that if JPP suffered a displaced odontoid fracture, the result could have been catastrophic for JPP and playing another football game would be one of his least concerns.

“I don’t even want to say it,” Chao said of the severity of a displaced odontoid fracture. “I think everyone is being cautious here. And my interpretation of this amount of caution to me indicates it is a high cervical fracture, likely odontoid.”

Chao saluted the Bucs and JPP’s medical team for leaning on the side of caution with JPP’s injury.

Let’s just say Joe feels a little better now learning this information.

  1. SCBucsFan Says:

What makes me happiest about all of this is from the start the guy stresses he doesn’t know what’s wrong with JPP. So many people giving opinions who don’t know what’s going on with him, this guy is upfront about it.

  2. BucdInTheHead Says:

Good read! Great to finally have some specification on the injury. I think we’re gonna take our time near the end of his recovery process, better safe than sorry, unless we’re looking like a team that is pushing for a postseason berth. I’d hate to rush him back in with something like that, and with the type of injury luck the Bucs have had this decade, there’s no need to tempt fate. My guess is he’ll be back in a limited role for our home game against the Saints 11/17.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The Bucs must feel that JPP will recover…..they are investing $7 mil on the hopes that he will have a full recovery and play this year.
Otherwise, it is a very risky decision.
Not that JPP needs motivation….but the Bucs showing loyalty ant patience with him will surely motivate JPP as a Buc.

  4. SmoothBayRider Says:

JPP needs to be in Germany right now getting the latest and greatest stem cell therapy .

  5. adam from ny Says:

another doctor stated jpp prolly just has a sore left nutt and all will be fine…it’s the car that’s screwed…

  6. Concerned Oneyed buc Says:

Why do they show loyalty to some and not the others. Looks like a two faced organization to me.

  7. stpetebucsfan Says:

I truly feel sorry for JPP. He has had some truly bad luck off the field. On a personal level I wish him the best.

Here is some “non-informed” speculation…actually a hope for a best case scenario.

JPP comes back in November and can actually play. By December he is close to his former self and all of this happens in time to add a true gem to our roster for the playoff run we plan to make.

Get better JPP….whether you make it back or not we are with you.

BTW Am I the only one? When I see Devon White on his horses it’s a cool thing however I’m perhaps scarred by Christopher Reeves. Of course White hopefully is not jumping his animals.
Still I hold my breath and hope he remains safe.

  8. Snook Says:

JPP at 50% is still way better than McCoy at 100%.

  9. 813bucboi Says:

was his “several” doctor opinions related to the diagnosis or surgery?

    GO BUCS!!!!

  10. Slugglife Says:

No way they can lean on him returning. That luxury shat the bed already.

  11. Siege the Bay Says:

JPP is the type that heals fast. So if we can get him back by November that would be great. JPP, VITA, and SUH, and NASSIB will have teams scared.

  12. Slugglife Says:

    One eyed

That’s complete speculation at this point. No one knows if he’ll be on the roster come game 1.

  13. Concerned Oneyed buc Says:

    True slugglife

  14. John Sinclear Says:

Joe: Check out death by hanging. It severs the odontiod bone. The odontoid bone is what protects the brain stem from severing in the event of head/neck trauma. If JPP is smart, he has played his last football game. For his sake, I hope so.

  15. Marine Buc Says:

I hope JPP is able to heal up and join the team by mid season. That would be great. I would welcome him back with open arms. JPP, Nassib, Vea and Suh would be a decent starting DL.

  16. Magadude Says:

I wish him well. The lawyers weigh in along with the medical community. Advice would be to stand down JPP. Cut him, let him rest, put him on IR to save cap space but that is not a wash. Win-win for all in the end–part ways now.

  17. Todd Says:

    Magadude–
I agree on your take. Unfortunately, I think cutting him is way best.

I speak from a bit of experience in that fractured my C7 in HS football my junior season. I was a highly recruited Strong Safety and was determined to recover and play ball. Long story tolerable, I had a year to rehab and come back stronger than ever. Ended up with a 19-inch neck.

I was captain my senior year and started. Was benched after two games because I tackled like a pu$$y. I just couldn’t get over the fear of another fracture, and what that might mean.

So with JPP, I have NO doubt he’ll recover and come back strong. I just might question whether or not he might live with the same fear I did. Probably not. He’s an animal…but, I wouldn’t bet on it if I were the Bucs.

  18. PBarber4President Says:

    Nice find Joe!

  19. JGhoti86 Says:

How’s in the world of football did you find this Joe? No stone left unturned with JoeBucsFan. Great job gentlemen, per usual!

  20. JGhoti86 Says:

How ** in the world of football ^^^

  21. Jean Lafitte Says:

Too bad. I think with Suh and Vea manning the NT position, he was primed to have a career season in sacks. HOF type numbers just like Aaron Donald had last season with Suh at NT.

  22. NOSBOS Says:

Lafitte seems to get it. This signing was all about spring-boarding Vita Vea. Go to the Bucs app the latest segment breaks down Dlinemen. They see Vea as a four football player people. He will destructive with the mere presence of Suh. Vea=s the most important component of the entire defense.

  23. Brandon Says:

FYI, back in the late 80’s, college basketball player, Jay Burson, broke his neck in a game. He finished the game and was later diagnosed with a broken neck. Obviously, it wasn’t the life-altering break that most people assume. He was able to continue his career, albeit in professional leagues, after his neck healed.

I have no concern about JPP’s neck and I have no concern with his physical readiness for the season. He will be able to lift and run and do drills all the way up to being activated. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is active in September.

  24. BucEmUp Says:

Jpp will be playing with nassib, suh and veah come week 5. White, david and spence will be blitzing animals, the corners will ve playing press coverage and all the Jason Licht haters will go suck.a big fat one.

    ITS ALWAYS BEEN COACHING!!!!!!!!

  25. ElioT Says:

Can they somehow reduce or restructure his salary now, being as it looks like he’ll be gone for half the season?

I like JPP but the Bucs are cash strapped and this injury had nothing to do with football…

They’ve got to free up some $$$ and hopefully land some more help on the D-Line and the O-Line. Guys are going to miss games, it’s inevitable.

If Vea, Suh or Nassib, Smith, Marpet or Jensen go down for any period of time, they are screwed.

They need more depth and guys who can contribute in the trenches.

  26. Allbuccedup Says:

Yeah we will be 1-4 so we will definitely need him 😂

  27. unbelievable Says:

Sorry but you just can’t count on him being available, slugglife is right.

It will be a bonus if he can come back and play this year (assuming they don’t cut him). But certainly not something we can bank on happening.

  28. Allbuccedup Says:

Might as well cut him before June 1st save some money he will be 31 next year cut off she if you make over 12 mil.

Bring him back Week 10 or so to help with our Playoff push…

U got this JPP! WE NEED YOU BRO.

  30. Allbuccedup Says:

Cut off age of you make over 12 mil.

  31. D-Rome Says:

There’s no way this team has a winning record without JPP.

    6-10.

I think all of our rookies are going to be Studs and we are going to vastly outperform expectations!

Here’s a few things you can Bank on this season:

    1. Devin White is going to be one of the best (if not THE best) LB in the NFL right out of the gate, and a Perennial All-Pro starting in Year 1.

    2. Vita Vea will be a Perennial All-Pro starting this season, and will be a Perennial DPOY candidate starting this year as well.

    3. Our Rookie DB’s will perform like Seasoned Veterans and showcase the ability to actually cover the Elite WR’s in this league.

    4. Rojo will become Great. At least as a runner. (Youtube Jamaal Charles highlights and you’ll see how Rojo is going to look this year)

    5. Our offense will be Top-3 in every major category, including points/game.

I could go on, but you can take those 5 things to the Bank.

And I put my name on everything I say here.

  33. NOSBOS Says:

But not a one of you willing to bet sum.

  34. NOSBOS Says:

Stand by those weak @$$ record predictions. Put some money up MOs.

  35. Gary B Schwartz, MD Says:

    wont ever play again.

  36. DooshLaRue Says:

I know most of you want to cut JPP, and I get that, but the guy has sack and I wouldn’t bet against him.

Tough call for Licht and BA.

  37. Allbuccedup Says:

He won’t be the same player after the injury. When they check him in September it’s possible he could be done for the year. Then what do you do pay him for being out. They are paying Beckwith for two years none football injury. But if course it’s not 14.9 mil. If they would not pay Mccoy 13 mil for playing how could you pay someone 14.9 mil for not playing?

  38. Todd Says:

    Allbuccedup—

Yup. Exactly. I think BA et al will make the calculated wise move.

  39. BlogTalkFootball.com Says:

  40. Doctor Stroud Says:

OK, guys, move over! When it comes to giving medical advice and dishing out “informed speculation” miles away from One Buc Place (and Fort Lauderdale for that matter), my diagnosis is proprioception. Definitely. No doubt about it. I stake my reputation on it.

  42. Rads Says:

Take a quick look at Sam Cane’s story. He’s a star All Black (New Zealand Rugby) who had a non displaced fracture of his neck in a game last November. His fracture required surgery- a fusion of the broken vertebrae and the adjacent one. He just returned to action a couple weeks ago and hasn’t missed a beat. He’s a complete workhorse flanker that loves making heavy contact every game. His recovery was 6 months, with an important hurdle in April where they did a bone scan to check the density. Once he passed that he was cleared for contact.

    Food for thought.

  44. Mike Johnson Says:

O linemen have ways..of attacking guys with neck injuries. Don’t care how tough you are. Drop JPP now like a bad habit. He’s never coming back full strength. He will be..in and out until he retires. Salvage that cap space to sign us a DE.. I smell another….Easy Money Sweezy here.

  45. Bucnjim Says:

Nosbos what over under are you using fans the say 5-6 wins?

  46. Bucnjim Says:

The Bucs offense with limited defense support should win 7 games (with very few mental mistakes) Given top 20 D 8 wins top 15 D 9 wins top 10 D 10 wins+. The most painful problem the last two years was the constant mental mistakes that cost us games especially in the red zone.

  47. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Here we go again….. wishing on a phucking star. Smh!

Didn’t we go through the same Bullsp!t with Carl Nicks a couple of years ago?

I wish the brotha well in all of his future endeavors.
But c’ mon, the time is now to make roster upgrades. Not during training camp when other teams will be bidding for defensive line help; because injuries pile up.

    Be Proactive, Not Reactive.

I can drink a cup of coffee (without a lid) while racking, and not spill a drop. Feel better? (btw: Reeves wasn’t an experienced enough rider for his mount. Very sad situation, someone should have been honest with a “star”.)

  51. BigMacAttack Says:

JPP will be suited up on opening day, ready to go. You can’t keep a good man down. It’s all smoke and mirrors to throw off opponents. I minor crack will heal in 90 days. Another 30 to get out soreness. He’ll be ready even if they hold him out for a couple games.

  52. Old Sombrero Says:

Dens fracture is nothing to fool around with and if indeed that’s what he suffered by God he should walk away from the game. It would be irresponsible to allow him to continue IF he has such an injury even if it’s only Grade I.

  53. Barbosa Says:

Cut JPP and go get Clowney.

  54. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The bright side is that there is a chance he can come back just in time for a playoff hunt…if we’re in one.

  55. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Barbosa, I don’t think we could afford Clowney even if we cut 3 players. Still gotta pay the rookies and have about 4 mil going into the season.

We only saved 3-4 mil by cutting McCoy…because we signed Suh.

  56. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I wish Joe would look into and do an article on whether JPPs salary will count against the cap if he is placed on IR (able to return) or PUP (does it even exist anymore?).

Because if JPP’s salary does not count against the cap, there is no need to cut him now. We would get his entire $14m instead of the $7.5 because of IR. But if he is cut, we only get the $7.5.

Some clarification would be great…not just fan opinions.

  57. firethecannons Says:

This is the article I have been waiting for–thankyou Joe!–I told you it must be a nondisplaced fracture that was non lifethreatening. I work in a trauma ER in Phoenix valley and agree with Dr Chao. The basics are this –it is a stable fracture as evidenced by no need for surgery or staying hospitalized past several hours. Informative article on this!
