Telling “Tea Leaves” Part Of New Report On Gerald McCoy

May 6th, 2019

Subject of a new NFL Network report

One never knows who is in the ear of NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

Today, Rapoport told the world he’s been reading “the tea leaves” on what could be an escalating Gerald McCoy situation at One Buc Palace.

Now how exactly does Rapoport read “tea leaves?” Well, he talks to people — lots of them. And Joe knows Rapoport has had a very strong relationship with Bucco Bruce Arians through the years.

So it’s no surprise that Rapoport opened a TV segment today saying McCoy’s Instagram lash out yesterday was more about response to local criticism than anything directed at Arians … according to the tea leaves.

The Bucs want McCoy at voluntary workouts, per Rapoport, and this all seems like a money thing going on now that the draft is over and no other team wanted McCoy’s $13 million salary for 2019. Rapoport talked about how perhaps McCoy and the Bucs are waiting to meet “somewhere in the middle” on money.

Joe finds the whole thing comical at this point. Heck, last week defensive coordinator Todd Bowles couldn’t even find it in himself to say he would like to coach Gerald McCoy this year.

Rapoport’s segment on McCoy is below.

  1. BucAllNight Says:

We got a RB now Joe…let’s leave the McCoy mele alone for a min.

Since we have a competent staff FA’s NOW want to come play for Bowles/BA

How about a write-up on that?

    Go Bucs!!!

  2. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

GMC is probably super BAT mad at TMAX and the whole tirade was aimed at TMAX and the lifting al the weights it to get TMAX to be GMCs robin and bring love and ice cream back to the ray jay

  3. danr Says:

Thats why they are acting like they dont want him.

IF the BUCS dont want him. other teams will reconsider their desire for him.

We are trying to drive down what he might get offered from other teams, so he will restructure for less here, knowing we torpedoed his value on the market.

Dirty move. but I applaud it if works.

  4. bucsfaninchina Says:

Meanwhile, Gerald’s trade value is tanking.

    Good job, Bucs.

  5. danr Says:

IF the brass does it right, whatever he restructures for here, he will still see as more than he would have gotten on the open market, forcing him to stay or take a pay cut.

  6. danr Says:

yeah, thats the trade off. pursuing this avenue requires you to abandon hope of trading him.

  7. Dewey Selmon Says:

GMC is trying to hold the Bucs hostage so he can go to a contender, then he will drop his price.

  8. Isaac haggins Says:

How Dare anyone question me !!! Sure does suck to get the audience not giving a sht about how hard you practice, how many gold pieces define you and how many lil nice things you do when you never bring home a win and clearly don’t care about winning vs yourself, yourself , yourself and its image !!! The Audience is never wrong and that’s the one thing Gerald doesn’t Get !!!

How Dare anyone question me !!!
    .
    .

speaking of Dare…I liked the Bucs RB Dare last pre season…we’ll see what BA thinks when the pads finally go this summer

  10. Lamarcus Says:

He just made that Marvel End Game was a bad movie

  11. Ra'Shad Says:

Don’t understand why people are saying his trade value went down. After the trade deadline last season passed there wasn’t any. Nobody wants to eat that 13 mil even if they can afford it.

  12. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Why does anybody care about GMC at this point????

only the media does cause it can make more of story of it than it really is.

Now if GMC as somehow an impactful player, then maybe I would care………….but I haven’t for GMC since he stole 100 million dollars worth of the Glazers loot.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Wild Bill Shakespeare had it right … ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. It’s a business, they’re both posturing. If BOTH sides don’t find some way to turn this into a Win-Win situation, they’ll BOTH end up getting screwed.

  14. Lord Cornelius Says:

Most boring NFL standoff in history that no one cares about lol

  15. The Buc Realist Says:

he has declined for 5 straight seasons!!!! and the sheep are surprised that he has no trade value!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Isaac haggins Says:

You can’t win with a self proclaimed bully that has never been in a fight !!! Not totally GMC s fault the organization thought he was a leader , he’s not and needs a bad arss to take that off him but now it’s too late he has made more excuses and childish statements than A Fiction Super Hero !!!

He has made this team softer than butter on a car hood in August !!!

  17. doolnutts Says:

bucsfaninchina — Did you listen to the video? As many people have already said there is no trade value for a 31 year old 13 million a year DT with declining numbers. We are doing a decent job at playing hardball if McCoy will take more guaranteed money with less cap hit its a huge win for us…

  18. JimmyJack Says:

I thought they would get him out quickly to spare this drama.

We have a new locker room now. Doubt they care but this still isn’t a good look to start off with drama from the old leader of the old abandoned Tamp Two defense.

This is Devin Whites defense now. Let him start off with a clean locker room. Don’t be bringing back old disgrunted workers who call themselves All Pros(and can’t even make a probowl).

Devin White don’t need that BS…….He got alot on his plate. He don’t need this BS.

  19. JimmyJack Says:

  20. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Arians and Bowles don’t even mention him when talking about other defensive players. I can’t imagine him staying in Tampa at this point. If they had any intention of keeping him they wouldn’t go out of their way to humiliate him at every turn.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

Got this MF telling me that he works. I’m busting my ass over hear and gotta listen this this guy complaining about work.

Shut the freak up dude. Me and a few select good ole boys could work circles around you. Couldn’t beat you at much but I could sure as heck out work you…….I see you sitting and resting during key plays you can’t fool me.

How dare you tell me that you worked today and ever think I should give a rats ass. Working is not impressive and you are broadcasting yourself and puming your chest about it.

The funny thing is I don’t mind self righteous arrogant jerks as football players but you did it for all the wrong reasons………On the field it’s entertaining to watch and provides wins……….When you did it you were just being a self righteous arrogant jerk.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

This is the first I heard of the McCoy’s Instagram lash out. I missed it yesterday.

That said, know what I saw when I watched the video?

I saw the anger that his detractors claim is missing. An attitude change that may show up on the field.

But I still say this is really about the Bucs telling him to take it easy in the off season because of his age…that and he usually doesn’t report until after the rookie camp anyway, and it just so happens that the first camp was before the draft this year.

It’s the media and fans who are making a mountain out of a molehill.

    And btw…

“read tea leaves” translates as guessing. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Speculation. Again.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Oh, and btw…last year, Ndamukong Suh was 31.

    He made $14,000,000.

  24. Anonymous Says:

It’s all the Bucs fault for letting this get out of hand.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Nothing like American tax dollars being wasted on education, eh?

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    TouchDownTampaBay Says
“Arians and Bowles don’t even mention him”

It is Arians policy to only talk about the players who are showing up at any given time. Rest assured, if GMC returns, Arians will be throwing plenty of complements his way.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    doolnutts Says
“We are doing a decent job at playing hardball if McCoy will take more guaranteed money with less cap hit its a huge win for us…”

They can also shift a good part of it to signing bonus instead, without needing him to agree. This will only delay the cap hit, but also would not add guarantees. He wouldn’t fight it because it is more money in his pocket now.

That said, if they completely rework his contract to include guarantees, then you can bet he will insist on a no trade clause.

  28. pick6 Says:

as i said before if you are going to try to get an established 3 tech DT to play for ~$9 million, GIVING $9 mil to Suh might get you a more bought-in player than TAKING $4 million from McCoy. I know some say Suh is better, i’m not convinced of that, but Suh won’t be coming to work resentful of the Bucs disparaging him and boxing him into a corner

“ALL I’VE EVER BEEN TAUGHT IS THAT NO MATTER HOW FAST YOU RUN THE 40 OR HOW MUCH YOU BENCH PRESS, IT’S ALL ABOUT DID YOU MAKE THE PLAY, DID YOU WIN OR DID YOU LOSE. THAT’S THE WAY YOU JUDGE A PLAYER. YOU PUT HIM OUT ON THE FIELD FOR 30 PLAYS AND SEE HOW MANY TIMES HE MADE A PLAY OR WAS A FACTOR IN MAKING A PLAY FOR YOU. THAT’S HOW I’VE ALWAYS BEEN JUDGED, AND THAT’S HOW I JUDGE MYSELF. YOU CAN NEVER BE SATISFIED IN THIS GAME.”

Here is what I can say about GMC.

First of all Gerald McCoy was never going to be a Sapp clone. He always was a different talent, a different character and a different personality from Sapp.

He apparently was never destined to be a HOF player. He maximized the talent he had. He worked his ass off for us. He did perform at a top tier level for many years. He was excellent at his position and was judged as among the top five to top two NFL DTs for many years.

For some of you I must ask. What the hell kind of sports fans are you anyway?

The only opinions I care about are from those of you who can honestly say you followed Sapp’s entire career from the day he was drafted. Your opinions carry some weight with me. The rest of you can babble on as far as I’m concerned.

    Go Bucs!!!!! Win Now!

P.S. Gerald, I wish you nothing but the best. You are a man. No one can take that away from you. Have a good life!

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The time to trade him was 2 years ago. That’s when I was on board with it. Not because I wanted him gone, but because he had trade value back then.

One of the biggest failings of the Bucs (and their fans) is waiting until no trade value remains before they try to trade a player.

For example, Lavante David should have been traded before last season started. Think about it…we would have been able to draft his replacement last year…or this year. Not like the team didn’t suck anyway.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

pick6, Suh is exactly the kind of guy who will give less effort for less money. That is not a good idea. Not to mention, he has sucked for years now. And I mean really sucked.

As I mentioned above though…he is a year older than GMC, and he made $14,000,000 last year…at the same age GMC is now.

Was he worth it? Not even close. But he isn’t half as good as McCoy these days.

  32. Isaac haggins Says:

I will assure you every player on Suh s d is scared of him and not one is scared of McCoy and I’m sure you can figure out which player they will play harder around …….. now that being said you don’t hv to be a bad ass to have players respect your game but you can’t be in game- soft, fake, premadonna, full of sht and hide when needed !!!

Trust me my eyes don’t make this sht up !!!

All that said I still think McCoy is a Great pick up for a Vet team with leaders where only his skill is needed and DEMANDED , the guy can play lights out if his premadonna, camera / me brain isn’t allowed to get in the wAy !!

  33. Red86 Says:

Y’all should checkout the ESPN article. His own trainer threw him under the bus talking about it’s the first time in a long time McCoy was this motivatived.

SMH. Hall of Famers don’t turn their motivations on and off. It’s always on and reaching new height.

  34. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t the Bucs have an O lineman they are paying 10 mil this year. But Shhhh..
nobody wants to talk bout that huh?. If he get 10. GMC is at least worth that.
Now sit back and watch somebody pay him at least that.

  35. SOEbuc Says:

If GMC won’t come to an agreement to the Bucs, toss his a$$ right now. He’s 31. A more 4-3 DT when we’re moving to a 3-4. Barley any winning records since he was drafted and named the “leader” of this team. We have a very impressive second year DT that says he can play anywhere on a 3-4 dline.

Say $6-8 million max. You can’t come to an agreement with us than get the f#ck outta dodge cus we don’t need ya.

  36. Marine Buc Says:

I believe the Bucs will be forced to release Gerold McCoy. No GM in their proper mind would pay him $13 million. Why trade for a dead man walking?

  37. ATrain Says:

    Man I Can’t wait for tomorrow’s Tweet

    GMC SLAM THESE FANS.

    HAHAHAH

THEN HOW ABOUT SLAMMING A FEW QBS WHEN THE SEASON STARTS
Wait except the game the Browns play the Bucs

  38. SOEbuc Says:

“One of the greatest Bucs of all time”

    ???

How far does that list go back??? Not to say he wasn’t a great player at certain points, but has also been very much overrated by many in his career.

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Red86 Says:
“SMH. Hall of Famers don’t turn their motivations on and off. It’s always on and reaching new height.”

    • I don’t think anyone has ever suggested McCoy is a future Hall of Famer…though if he stays and we win a couple superbowls, he might start getting mentioned for it. Ring of honor? I think I may have seen that suggested once or twice, but he has not earned it yet. I think he would have had the bucs truly built around him though.

    • There are NFL players every year who suddenly look better than ever before in the later years. For example, Fitz started to (it didn’t stick though; so he turned it ‘on and off’).

The biggest knock on McCoy over the years has been that he didn’t play angry…like Sapp. This whole ordeal seems to be making him angry.

As to his salary and cutting it, no way does he cut to below $10m for those who think he should get less, and he’d probably make at least $11.5m on the open market.

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    ATrain Says:
“THEN HOW ABOUT SLAMMING A FEW QBS WHEN THE SEASON STARTS
Wait except the game the Browns play the Bucs”

    Why would you say that?

Are you really a Browns fan, Atrain???

  41. Eric y Says:

Lol one of the greatest bucs of all time TFOH

  42. Bucsfanman Says:

For the sanity of the fanbase and the safety of tmax’s remote control, GMC needs to be moved!
It’s not that I think the Bucs are in any position to let even average players walk out the door, but dang this is getting old!

Bonzai- Folks don’t like to look at the facts when we start comparing Suh and McCoy. The stats don’t lie. But, there will still always be that group that thinks Suh is better. Thank you, NO!

  43. JimmyJack Says:

He is great? He went a entire decade playing for Tampa Bay and never once said that ked Drew Bress. That is failure not greatness.

Oh, and btw…last year, Ndamukong Suh was 31.

    He made $14,000,000.

SUH is a MAN the same can not be said for cancer93 and his group of apologists…

  47. tmaxcon Says:

Considering the bucs have only had 2 great players in franchise history in sapp and selmon the rest just popular role players and backups…. captain blowout cancer93 is not even in the discussion…. cancer93 is closer to Myron Lewis or Scared Dexter Jackson then great.

Remember folks the object is wins and cancer93 is a career loser who never made anyone else better…. in contrast sapp carried the entire franchise and 2 bums to the hall of fame with him.

  48. stvcl Says:

Worst case scenario is we have to bite the bullet and keep him for one more year. I’d rather they didn’t but with that bloated guaranteed salary gonna be super hard, if not impossible to move this less than mediocre player. It’d be real cool if he’d just retire.

  49. Go Bucs 72 Says:

I’m so over this crybaby, cut him already. It would be nice if he actually got pissed off on the field once in his career. Don’t let your Kimono get caught in the door on the way out McCottoncandy.

  50. Bobby M. Says:

I’m starting to think the team is putting McCoy in his place…..If another team has a player go down and sees value in McCoy, then we’ll probably trade him but right now I think a message is being sent that McCoy is no longer untouchable and there’s a shifting of the guard within the locker room.

I’ve said this since Winston arrives…..McCoy seemed to go out of his way to remain relevant as the face of the Bucs. Its always seemed like McCoy viewed himself as an exception to leadership from other teammates….That dynamic will be ending this year. He’ll fall in line or he’ll be exposed. He’s no alpha male….he’s not elite…its put up or shut up time. That’s the NFL for you….what have you done for me lately.

  51. Jason Parker Says:

    @stvcl

McCoy’s contract is no longer guaranteed.

  52. BucEmUp Says:

What is the penalty for going over the cap?

  53. BucEmUp Says:

    Wow nevermind.

  54. GauisfrakkinBaltar Says:

Geez that guy on the left has got some big ass ears.

  55. Rod Munch Says:

It’s truly remarkable the idiots rooting for McCoy to be gone. You have to be incredibly stupid to think that is a positive for the team.

  56. GrayBalls Says:

Bonzai just shot a load of wisdom all over some faces today. Also, Isaac, it’s prima dona, not premadonna. You know, for future reference

  57. ElioT Says:

I wonder what the training video would look like with an average Guard pushing his a** and whooping him off the ball?

Or maybe a smart offensive lineman letting him and his “infamous penetration” totally divert himself away from the play?

I’ve benn watching the Bucs my entire life including Gerald’s entire career.

I wonder where this “fire” is when HIS defense is getting their a**es kicked season after season, and the big screen just shows him with his hands on his hips with a clueless and very beta look on his face.

    Good man, no doubt.

But he’s gotta be one of the biggest FAKE “tough guys” the league has ever seen.

Too many awful, non-impactful, do nothing plays.

But “every coach in the nfl raves about McCoy…”

Just not when he’s on the open market with a $13,000,000.00 salary.

Get this over with and just cut this dude.

    Please!!!

  58. Buc1987 Says:

    GayBalls Says:

“Bonzai just shot a load of wisdom”

    What???

    Bonzai and wisdom????

    What???

  59. Anglican Says:

Either GMC takes two men dollars or gets cut. 2 million is the high end of what he’s worth. Need to take the garbage out throw him away.

  60. Red86 Says:

    @Bonzi

I was referring to actual Hall of Famers in my post.

Also, it’s the wrong perception of why the so call “McCoy Hater” or “McCoy Truthers” consistently post the opinions about McCoy.

It’s lack of production when the team needs it the most. It’s that simple. There were several times the Bucs’ offense was winning on their final drive. Yet, McCoy couldn’t get the job done in obvious passing situations.

No hall of famer would not have made key plays in this moment. Many of them fail which is true. McCoy has only made a play in these conditions once or twice in 10 years. That’s just horrible for the amount of praise he get.

His issues isn’t lack of talent on the team. This past season proves that. It’s his lack of motivation, techniques, stamina, strength and production.

  61. tmaxcon Says:

Of course every coach raves about cancer93 they understand his soft arrse is not a threat and the on field results prove that regardless what meaningless bs the apologists spew

  62. Clean House Says:

I’m actually sick of all this talk about how the guy sucks- how about the franchise sucks

If I was him I’d tell the new coach to kiss my ass publicly. I’d tell them, go ahead and cut me now and stop f-ing around like little passive aggressive girls.
Say good luck winning with the dumpster fire roster you surrounded me with.
Tell them you’ve seen a new scheme every few years and that the one constant is your pro bowls. Even an all pro honor. Get your 13 mil as part of your signing bonus with a new team big man- I wouldn’t stand gor BA and Lichts BS

  63. richbucsfan Says:

I don’t know what kind of cat and mouse game the Bucs are playing with McCoy but it looks bad, really bad. Ultimately, this will cost Licht his job. If he wanted McCoy he would find a way to do it. If not, he would do the class thing and release him as now there is no trade value. Why Licht is playing this game with a player who gave his best efforts for years when the Bucs refused to build a strong defense around him is beyond me. This is a real black eye to the new regime…a very poor start for this group.

  64. Clean House Says:

    Extremely well put Richbucsfan

And Arians using Rappaport as his pawn stooge is beyond disgrace.

I think I’ve had about enough of this dysfunction

  65. Isaac haggins Says:

    Thanks, Gray

    Prima , I will practice

Pre does mean , before and McCoy is btw all planned and pre calculated , the whole skit ,camera to practice to interview to field it’s all part of the GMC mini series called …..Hey what about Me n my Ego !!!

  66. Red86 Says:

Pro Bowl argument is obsolete. Will Gholston had a better year than McCoy and McCoy still made it. Are you saying Will Gholston a pro bowler or better than McCoy? Why isn’t McCoy consider a top 100 nfl player as of late? (Retorical questions)

The delusion of GMC being a great leader and player is real. Somewhere Saggy Baker is laughing @ McCoy for not checking him earlier than the Panthers screw up. A real leader would act like a leader first and shut baker down right after the tree dance and he cussing out the out the rookies for telling the truth about his laziness.

  67. Tmazisamoron Says:

Latest gem from TMAX apparently Derrick brooks is a “bum” carried to the HOF by Sapp, that is priceless
