Browns Still Kicking Tires On GMC?

May 13th, 2019

More speculation.

The man who typed up a speculative story but claimed it wasn’t speculative has rehashed his previous claim about Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy being courted by the Browns.

Steve Doerschuk of the Canton Repository (Joe just loves that name for a 19th century news delivery service) has typed up another story that the Browns have their eyes fixed on the saga and drama of GMC’s status with the Bucs.

Of course, like his original story, Doerschuk offers no quote from any source, named or unnamed. Just after his original story, Doerschuk took to Tampa radio claiming his story was not speculative. Yet his original story was long on speculation and barren of attribution.

In his latest, Doerschuk offers this dubious line:

We believe the team remains quite interested in adding the six-time Pro Bowler [GMC] to what could be a championship defensive line.

“Believe?” That’s a fancy word for “guess.” As Joe used to ask sources while working for a 19th century news delivery service after they said they believed something, Joe would ask, “Well, do you believe or do you know?” Often, that question elicited a far different answer.

Again, per Doerschuk, the Browns are willing to play the waiting game and the $13 million of GMC’s contract due this year is a little tough for Cleveland general manager John Dorsey to swallow.

So basically it sounds like the Browns — if you believe Doerschuk — are willing to play a game of chicken with Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht. Either the Bucs rework GMC’s contract to make it easier to trade him or the Browns are ready to pounce when/if the Bucs release GMC.

That is, if GMC is willing to rework his contract.

He plays for the money only. He’d rather go to a losing team and make more money.

He’ll be cut and go to the highest bidder. Then he’ll be that teams oversensitive loafing problem.

GMC has bee a great player for the Bucs. He has been stuck on some really bad teams. I believe the Bucs would do GMC a great favor by letting him go to another team where he has a REAL chance to win a ring. The Browns, the Rams, the Patriots are all good landing spots for Gerald. He deserves better than what he will get playing for the Bucs, at least for the foreseable future.

  4. Clean House Says:

I now realize why we suck-
I challenge any reader to go to our current roster, and look at the names of the colleges our players attended. Our brilliant BM is so busy trying to find gems that he has completely ignored plyers from major, competitive programs.
Our roster is an absolute debacle. Fire Licht today. Garbage in Garbage out. You don’t piece together a championship competitive professional team with a ton of guys who couldn’t even hack it at major schools. PAC 12 and Auburn suck, along with the rest of this crap you’re feeding us. What a joke.
    CLEAN HOUSE

    Licht’s a total buffoon

  5. Clean House Says:

    P.S

BM was not a typo for GM, it stands for Buffoon Moron or Bowel Movement or Brain Missing

Fire this clown, this guardian and architect of the most embarrassing dumpster fire circus ever known to man

Just export this trash to London for God sakes,
I don’t even want to watch football anymore.
You’ve ruined the sport for me.

  7. Clean House Says:

Trade the whole franchise for a bowl of soup, or for 1,000 UDFA’s with exciting story lines- and maybe we can get all of the players with major injury histories too, and every tunstyle OLineman.

    Licht will be in paradise

Coach them with an army of women

    Glazer sister in heaven

    Kill me

  8. Clean House Says:

Too bad Culverhouse Isn’t still alive- we could give the team back to him-
His orange suit made it worth while

He may be better than this debacle

  9. Clean House Says:

[Relax. There have been football teams that have won the Super Bowl owned by women. Bears and Rams spring to mind. The Saints are currently owned by a woman. Don’t be a knucklehead. — Joe]

Oh it’s not our team, it’s the Glazers, I forgot-

Where did Kalil Mack go to school again?

  12. Clean House Says:

Ed. That is a good example, we do have 3 players
from Buffalo jr college just in case there are 3 more missing Khalils we’ve got it covered. By that logic Jerry Rice went to Mississippi Valley State so let’s go all in on division 4
    and NAIA

  13. ATLBucs Says:

    Clean house;
The roster has a lot of SEC players. Florida. Miss stare, Auburn. LSU.
And why all the negativity when you know you are going to be rooting for and following the Bucs like you’re doing now on this blog

  14. Clean House Says:

    ATL
Perhaps you are right, I am like an addict, much like all of us, This negative purge is like a failed attempt at trying to go cold turkey after 32 years as a fan.
Forgive me all…Too many downs….one big upswing….back at the bottom…..
I just have to stop for the summer some how, if only so could…noooooo…I’m stuck.,

I’m starting my own site- BUCS Anonymous- we can have small groups and sponsors- no offense to those struggling with real things…

  15. Clean House Says:

    You’re right Joe- thanks,
    I should absolutely relax
    🙂

  16. ATLBucs Says:

If it’s one thing we’ve learned over the years is that bad coaching does not improve. We’ve had some really bad coaches and that in itself is a light at the end of the tunnel seeing that we have a new coaching staff with a good pedigree. As a buc fan from the beginning I have to find some straw of hope to grasp onto

  17. Magadude Says:

There is the also the third, option…rework GMC’s contract so they can keep him. I’m not saying whether they should or shouldnt–I’m about ready to cut him loose personally. However, losing JPP does change things a bit, and of course he’s opted not to have surgery? Looks like question marks well into the season.

  18. TDTB Says:

Time and money are on the side of McCoy and the Browns.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

@CleanHouse … “I don’t even want to watch football anymore. You’ve ruined the sport for me”. Actually, sounds like you ruined it for yourself CleanHouse. Change YOUR focus; don’t let the negativity of some other fans and especially the Tampa media drag you into their hole with them.

There are a LOT of quality, talented players on our Bucs team … just not enough of them. Reason being, in my opinion, because the Bucs are NOT a well-built team, especially when it comes to depth. Injuries are a fact of life in the NFL, and teams without depth end up being losing teams. Licht has put far too much $$$ into our starters, many of whom he drafted, and not enough $$$ into bringing quality depth players on-board. Add in a constant turnover of coaching staffs that’ve done a marginal job of developing players and voila … the perfect storm. That’s on ownership AND on our 2 GMs this past decade, Dom & Jason (their predecessor, Bruce Allen, didn’t help the situation any either).

But still, THIS coaching staff gives me at least a glimmer of HOPE. I think I can see a very intentional, well-conceived PLAN unfolding, and IMO that’s why Bruce Arians got the job. He came in with a PLAN to fix this MESS, the mess that Jason Licht AND his predecessor created IMO. IT’S NOT A ONE-YEAR PLAN, nor should anyone have ever expected it to be. IF we win or break even this year, that’s awesome. But I personally think this first year is much more about changing a CULTURE, just like Tony Dungy had to do when he first arrived. It worked then, and it can work again, But probably not overnight, regardless of what BA has said. Disregard the hype and disregard the negativity. Watch what this coaching staff DOES, not what it SAYS.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

@Magadude … “also the third, option…rework GMC’s contract so they can keep him”. At this point, what’s behind Door 3 looks like our best option to me. And in reality it probably always was our best option, even without JPP’s injury. Commenters like tmaxcon can bash GMC all they like as being the ‘face of a losing franchise & culture’ BUT … he and JPP are our 2 best DLinemen. Yes they’re BOTH getting older, but there’s no other Bucs’ DLinemen whose PERFORMANCE to date has even been close. Let’s not ‘cut off our nose to spite our face’ as they say.

Reworking GMC’s contract CAN result in a Win-Win for BOTH the Bucs & GMC, IF done properly and IF both sides negotiate in good faith. It’s not rocket science.

What to do about JPP now that HE has elected not to have surgery is really the bigger issue IMO. That changes everything, because IF the ‘no-surgery option’ doesn’t work and he requires surgery at the end of the 6 months, he loses not only this year but probably also a good chunk of next year (IF in fact he stays a Buc). This is the Carl Nicks situation all over again … LOTS of Cap $$$ tied up with an undetermined outcome. And in Nicks’ case, nothing to show at the end for the $$$ tied up. Injuries to any player stink, but injuries to your best players REALLY stink, especially when you’re the Bucs.

Given our salary Cap situation & our NEED to find an adequate replacement for JPP quickly, I think the Bucs have no choice but to exercise our NFI option to not pay JPP (at least part of his salary) while heals up. Crappy option IMO, but it was HIS choice NOT to have surgery. Bucs have very little wiggle room at this point.

  21. ATrain Says:

Browns are waiting for the Bucs to cut GMC no one wants to pay the 13 million

    Big Surprise

Why such loyalty to a player who had no loyalty.

A TRUE TEAM LEADER OR FACE WOULD RESTRUCTURE LIKE A TOM BRADY

A spoiled brat sits in the corner and yells

Difference between NE and the Bucs
IN NE the PLAYERS ARE DEMANDED TO LIFT UP THE TEAM
WITH THE BUCS the players demand the TEAM lift them up

    Great players make great plays
    Great TEAMS make CHAMPIONSHIP

    READ IT GMC !!!!!!!!!

It looks like Muppet Man feelings are in this picture.

  23. Sherman Perigo Says:

File NFI on JPP release him rework GMCs contract sign the rest of your draft picks and sign two free agents a 34 defensive end and 34 edge rusher problem solved.

  24. LakeLand Says:

I got 5 on the Suckaneers wins 5 or less!

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Clean House clearly hijacked things here.

Steve Doerschuk is a man trying to maintain credibility, probably because his local fans are giving him flack. There is little chance of the trade happening, and I personally don’t believe there ever was a trade in the works.

Rookie camp is done. Traditionally, McCoy shows up AFTER rookie camp. He’ll be here.

If Arians had not held a camp before rookie camp, none of this would even be an issue.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I really do not understand how commenters who establish themselves as non-Bucs fans and trolls are not IP Banned here…just make zero sense to me.

  27. TBUC North Carolina Says:

Lakeland… it’s well documented that you’ve got em at 3 wins after the draft… not that I disagree on a well below 500 team!!

  31. Steven007 Says:

Bonzai, Joe values their supposed loyalty. They may never buy a product from any of the advertisers on jbf but the mere fact that they stuck around for a while Joe considers loyal.

  32. Joe Says:

    Joe values their supposed loyalty.

Joe values spirited debate. So long as they do not commit Crimes Against Joe, anything is fair game. Joe also believes the comments on this site are partly what separates this site from others.

  33. Mike Johnson Says:

If I were GMC, I would not rework Sh.. Let them release me and I can go to the Browns or the highest bidder. Just to spite these Sorry a.. Bucs. Thats right, I said it. Somebody will pick up GMC and pay him. Maybe not 13 mil. But more than the Bucs will. They won’t look after you GMC. So why look after them. And Just-us for all baby.

  34. Lord Cornelius Says:

Man just cut this guy or extend him. The idea of getting anything valuable in a trade is a joke. And the idea that Licht even knows how to game the draft system is a joke.

We are not going to get any compensatory picks next year.

Kwon is valued at a 3rd and Humphries at a 4th currently.

But we just HAD to sign a punter and guys like Breshad Perriman.

Would anyone in their right f*cking mind trade a 3rd or 4th round pick for either of those 2 players?

    Because that’s what Licht did.

  35. Dan McLaughlin Says:

It sounds like nothing to me. Some clown from the Canton Repository with a whole lot of wishful thinking. Araians said McCoy is their starting tackle this year. Nobody has said any different. Move on.

  36. Clean House Says:

    I’m not a troll,
I got overly worked up fixating on incompetence. I did feel like an ex gf on a rant. I actually felt stupid and embarrassed letting myself get to that point.
    Sorry everyone.

We’ve once seen a steady rise to beautiful defensive football dominance and a nice ball control offense, that got the job done. This long running debacle is nothing like that blueprint. This isn’t working and seems like a whole lot of trial and error. Unfortunately, the nature of it is that windows of opportunity are missed due to age, injury, momentum shifts, and now contract timing. The GM job is to manage all of that and this hasn’t happened- the owners supposed job is to manage the management of this by at least making sure there is competency and proper stewardship. These guys have failed and drank the Licht Koolaid. Hopefully this Arians is somehow different.
