Wishful Thinking?

April 30th, 2019

Trade speculation.

If Joe didn’t know any better, he’d wager this is a made-up-story by a guy whose editor wants something, anything, written about the Browns.

The rumor that Steve Doerschuk of the Canton Repository — how’s that for a name of a 19th-century news delivery service? — pushed where he believes the Browns and Bucs are talking turkey and Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy’s name is in the middle of the chatting seems like a whole lot of nothing.

And what may the Bucs want from the Brownies? Could be disgruntled running back Duke Johnson.

Now before people get hot and bothered, there is not one quote in the story from any source, named or unnamed, that this is happening. Doerschuk drops the word “believed” so many times it’s like he’s using the word as a pickup line at a thumping hotspot in Cleveland’s Warehouse District.

If the Bucs could get any halfway decent running back for GMC, since the Bucs seem fully intent on dumping him, Joe’s all for it.

Could it happen? Sure. But this story is like Joe writing the Bucs could be interested in a pass rusher next year if Carl Nassib reverts to a pumpkin.

And yes, Joe would argue that Johnson is an upgrade over Jacquizz Rodgers.

  1. Magadude Says:

Unless McCoy is working to restructure with the Bucs now on the cusp of the having to sign their rookies and be postured to pick up other plays cut from other teams due to the draft, then it is likely McCoy does not really want to play at all. He will cut outright by the Bucs within weeks if not days. They Bucs know they can’t sit on this forever as they need to pick up some veterans to shore up the RB and OL and maybe even DL.

  2. Bruce Blahak Says:

He’s just a distraction and dark cloud hanging over this team now. The sooner he is cut the better. Just end this chapter of Bucs history and we can move on without talking about past players….

  3. Bird Says:

But you wonder why the browns would trade for him when he is gonna be cut.
Assuming that if he was cut he would automatically want to go to the browns
When he could go to pats for 5 -7 mil a year to win a championship

    That’s the story
    That’s what’s funny

  4. Defense Rules Says:

All I’m seeing is a bunch of smoke & speculation, on a bunch of different folks’ parts. Odds are just as good right now that we keep GMC as that we release GMC. Money, age & scheme fit seem to be at the heart of the ‘GMC issue’. Well, that and the fact that tmaxcon doesn’t like him (ooohh, we’d better release him quickly).

Start backwards. Anyone who thinks that Todd Bowles wouldn’t love to have GMC on his DLine is smoking dope … he’d make him fit in his scheme because McCoy is still an excellent DT. Yes, age is a factor, IF we’re expecting GMC to play 80-85% of the defensive snaps like he has been doing … I wouldn’t see him doing that in Todd Bowles defense, particularly with us having Vea (50% is closer to reality IMO, which would keep GMC a lot ‘fresher’).

Which brings us to MONEY. Bucs COULD make room for him at $13 mil by releasing Gholston (he might be released regardless). But $13 mil for a rotational player (IF he stays) is a bunch of $$$; money that’s desperately needed to sign at least a couple of other FAs (RG & RB). I’d be willing to bet that Gerald stayed home from the VOLUNTARY camp this past week for one reason: the Bucs haven’t committed to him, so why risk injury at this point if you might have to shop around for another team?

I think GMC would love to finish his career with (1) a playoff team; and (2) the Bucs. If he believes that the two can make the playoff this year or next, he may very well be interested in re-negotiating his contract to a 2-year deal at whatever (say$15-$20 mil fully guaranteed, based on reduced playing time).

Let’s say we keep 3 DTs … right now that’d PROBABLY be Vea, Allen & Beckner (who the Bucs list as a 295 lb DE). IF Vea goes down for any period of time, we’ve got big problems. IF GMC stays, we’d keep 4 DTs, but I’m guessing that both GMC & Beckner would be used some in the DE role in the 3-4 with JPP or Nassib as the other DE, with Vea (or Allen) as space-eaters in the middle. Now THAT could be a fun 3-man DLine. Once again though, all speculation at this point.

  5. Buc believer Says:

Bird the Pats are much to classy an organization to have the distraction of a robe wearing look at me player in their organization. Can you imagine Gerald trying to pull the attention getting scene of kneeling in “prayer” in the middle of Gillette stadium on game days? Bellichek would send out and assistant to grab Batman by the scruff of the neck and drag his sorry arse back into the locker room! NO PLAYER ON THE PATS IS BIGGER THAN THE TEAM! That’s why they have won 6 Super Bowls!

  6. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

One has to wonder if Doerschuk is related to that Johnchuk monster, who threw his little girl off a bridge to her death ?

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Quick question related to the Bucs’ salary Cap situation Joe. Seems like it’s irrelevant until the final 53-man roster is made up. If I read correctly, the rookie ‘hits’ count as soon as they’re selected, not when they’re actually signed. But because of the Rule-of-51, the lowest paid players in the Top-51 would be bumped off the list, saving us $$$ (although not as much as the rookies will ultimately cost). IOW, seems like the Bucs will only need to come up with around $4 mil (we already have $1.7 mil space?).

Reason why I ask about the final 53-man roster relationship to salary Cap is because it would seem perfectly doable to make enough $$$ available to sign a RG & RB before the season starts (preferably earlier) WITHOUT releasing GMC. Am I missing something here?

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Thank you, Joe.

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As to you other guys, you are wrong about this, just like you were wrong about him being traded during the draft.

    McCoy is going nowhere.

As I said last week, the Bucs don’t need to cut him, and they need him on the team. Everything you have heard is media or fan generated rumor.

    Sorry, Haters.

  10. Phil Says:

If they can trade him for a ham sandwich and a cold beer I would say do it.

  11. Billy_43 Says:

Looking back at Arians statement about GMC losing a step falls more in line with all the other motivational things he has said to guys STAYING on the team.

Don’t be surprised if GMC has 10 sacks for the BUCS next year.

  12. Dirty Bucs Says:

You wouldn’t have to argue that Duke is a better back than Jazquizz. There’s no argument to be made. He is leaps and bounds better.

  13. Buchanan4life Says:

We hands down have the worst stable of running backs in the history of the NFL. Sorry guys but it’s the truth, let’s face it.

But you wonder why the browns would trade for him when he is gonna be cut.

Because if he is cut and hits the open market he can choose to go to any team that wants him…..maybe he wouldn’t want to go to Cleveland…..

It gives a team guarantee….and if they are trading a player they really don’t need or want….it works out. Trading a draft pick is another matter altogether….much harder to do.

  15. ATrain Says:

Yes Bonzai the Bucs need lockerroom poison like they need to draft another kicker

PLEASE IF MCCoy was sOoooo awesome he would have been traded

    BUT NO ONE WANTED HIM

  16. Bird Says:

    Tampabay bucfan

Yah. I was being sarcastic with the joes

  17. ATrain Says:

    🤔🤔🤔🤔

  18. Totally Exonerated Says:

    Good catch, Joe

When something smells fishy, trust it.

    “If true…”

  19. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

If they could get antonio calloway and duke johnson for GMC now that would be a coup for jason gump

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This is the problem with a great deal of news today…..no sources at all….not even “unnamed” sources…….a reporter can simply make up something, write about it…..and usually suffer little consequences.
    Wishful Thinking, exactly.

Does this trade make any sense…..yes….and that is why the story has very tiny little legs.

  21. Go Bucs 72 Says:

I wish they would get rid of the soft overpaid crybaby now so we can talk about non cross dressing Bucs players.

  22. OneBuc55 Says:

Wishful thinking…That we can put an end to the McCoy talk…

His best years are behind him…Last off-season Jason went out and traded for JPP thinking it would open things up for McCoy and he sucked this year…If he was really interested in staying he’d restructure his contract…if we cut him he’d be lucky to get 7 mill per on the open market anyway…

All these years I can only recall a few games where he was unstoppable the entire game…imo he always disappeared in crunch time/4th quarter…he’s a nice guy and all but he’s no alpha…for me personally, hes the face of a losing culture that has plagued this franchise since he’s been here…time to move on and turn the page…

  23. Joe Says:

    Defense Rules:

Way too technical and complex of a question for Joe this early in the morning. 🙁

  24. tmaxcon Says:

Well if bonzi says cancer93 is going nowhere you can gurantee his release is imminent….. bonzi ill give you credit for one thing no one can match your consistency for constantly being wrong….

They cant let this clown near those new young players not even for a second.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    ATrain Says
“Yes Bonzai the Bucs need lockerroom poison like they need to draft another kicker”

That is completely made up and ridiculous. You want him gone, so you claim he is poison? He;s one of the best guys in the locker room!

We’ve both been here a number of years, and there are times when we’ve disagreed, but you’ve never been the type to straight up lie to support your way.

McCoy is an encourager. He doesn’t put anyone down. He may not be the kind of mean motivator like Sapp was, but he’s done nothing but try to encourage his teammates and bring them closer together.

If you want him gone, fine. That’s your opinion. I can respect that even if I do not agree with it.

But don’t make crap up just to support your biased opinion. Be honest about it.

    McCoy Pros:
    • Fast get off
    • Plays through injuries most of the time
    • GREAT Locker room guy
    • LED THE TEAM in Quarterback hits last year (better even than JPP)
    • Prowbowler Substitution
    • No off field issues
    • Suh never even came close to being as good

    McCoy Cons:
    • 31 years old
    • Makes $13 million per year
    • Sack have dropped (but still getting hits on QB)
    • Has not gotten ten plus sacks in a season

Thing people want to hold against him but should not:
    • He isn’t the sort of bully leader Warren Sapp (the criminal) was.
    • Did not show up to the first couple VOLUNTARY CAMPS (he may have been advised to stay home)

As to him not being in camp, two things:
    • No one holds that against JPP, even though McCoy has given his heart and soul to this team since we drafted him
    • If he was advised to stay home, for all we know Bruce Arians told him to stay home because he is 30+ and Arians wants to preserve his health by letting him rest longer. McCoy might even show up AFTER rookie camps, which is the usual time of year he shows up.

  26. D-Rome Says:

If Joe didn’t know any better, he’d wager this is a made-up-story by a guy whose editor wants something, anything, written about the Browns.

This morning I thought, “Ok, I’ll see what the article says in the Cleveland Plain Dealer about the trade” and then I found out it was a story written the Canton Repository.

    I was like, “The who?”

  27. Maze Says:

I don’t think Joe realizes how good Johnson is. This would be phenomenal and a steal for the Bucs

  28. 813bucboi Says:

    make the deal…..

give them GMC and a 7th round pick for duke and a 6th round pick….

    go bucs!!!!

  29. tmaxcon Says:

Bonzi you write like you have personal experience in bucs licker with mccoy…. just because you and he attend similar sunday cults doesn’t mean you know him personally….

  30. Todd Says:

lol this is how Jason would do the trade. Duke Johnson and a 7th for gerald Mccoy and a 5th rounder.

  31. Greg Says:

    Never trust a suppository….just saying….

  32. Defense Rules Says:

“Way too technical and complex of a question for Joe this early in the morning. 🙁”
For me too Joe. I see so many conflicting articles it’s amazing. Finally came to the conclusion that it doesn’t mean a whole bunch UNTIL the 53-man roster is finalized.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    tmaxcon Says
“Bonzi you write like you have personal experience in bucs licker with mccoy…. just because you and he attend similar sunday cults…”

And there it is…the fallback plan of the common troll. When you can’t beat your opponent, do your best to insult him to try to save face in front of the masses.

So now the truth comes out…you don’t hate McCoy because of the color of his skin, you hate him because of his faith. You’re a bigot.

  34. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe i have a hunch that trade talks for McCoy have been going on since the NFL combine. I mean rumors swirling say the bucs want duke johnson in a trade for GMC. And i dont think its a coincidence that we didnt get a rb in the draft worthy of taking the #1 spot. This leads me to believe they been talking this out quite a bit now. Im guessing we get a 5th and duke Johnson in exchange for gmc and our 4th rounder next year.

  35. Mike Johnson Says:

Ok so we got a an average, (at best) center named Ryan Jensen making 10 million this season. And I don’t see one Buc fan sayin a WORD. If he can get 10 then GMC is worth 10 or 11 at least. You guys crack me up. Nobody said anything when we paid a washed up ex-seattle player named Easy Sweezy millions for 2 or 3 yrs just to smile and rehab. If I were GMC I would not ask but demand a trade. He’s put his time in here faithfully.Move on GMC and get paid. And some team will pay him.

  36. Mike10 Says:

    “Stud DT” lol

.. give a look at crouching tiger. He just oozes stud

  37. pick6 Says:

my first thought was that this was a writer playing fantasy GM. the browns have more than enough young and veteran talent up front, and a $13 million 31 year old is not worth giving up draft picks for

also working against the bucs and mccoy is the fact that Suh is out there and at this point will probably have to take $10 million or less to get signed. that’s bound to water down demand and definitely makes the salary a sore point

  38. tnew Says:

I’ve been heavily critical of GMC, that’s not going to change, but until I hear JPP saying that GMC is specifically one of the guys not taking care of his responsibilities, I want GMC on the team. I do think he should be restructured down to $7mil or so.. If he doesn’t want to do that, he WANTS to leave. For as much as the organization has given to him, he should be willing to do that. Trade a fifth for Duke Johnson and call it good.

I keep hearing how fifth round picks are just throw away picks around here.

  39. tmaxcon Says:

    Bonzai

I hate all selfish hypocrites that play god card like its a shield…. i could careless about the person cancer93 is … I HATE THE RESULTS HE PRODUCES ON SUNDAY’S…. you pathetic little pansy arse pc police that turn everything into race or bigotry have rendered those 2 words meaningless…. your boy has not produced anything but blowouts and basement titles yet continues with the holier than thou selfish bs

I should expect nothing less from a weak little boy. You played race card last weak and it blew up in your face… keep trying it wont change the fact your hero has never won a single meaningful game in her career…. faith is nothing more than a crutch for the mentally weak afraid to deal in reality

  40. THETRUTH Says:

Joe !!! Duke is not half way decent he is damn good back and go every carries he could be elite. Your comment question how you rate backs

  41. ATrain Says:

    Bonzai

What did the ATrain say that was false?

    I gave opinion

McCoy does not get upset when he loses
He has shown poor leadership even being called out by Fans, players, ex players

Winston even sat him behind closed doors with a problem ( as reported here)

I don’t care if McCoy is Sapp. I thought Sapp was good but became a cancer

McCoy has had Good stats not Elite Stats

I have watched and rewatched games and have seen him take plays off

All I have heard is he had no help. This year he had JPP and Nassib stepped up 6 sacks is better that a lot of DE we have had

McCoy is done 31 years old

  42. Tony LA Says:

    Yo fans,

The salary cap is not our problem. That’s Licht’s.
Who cares if the Bucs are under the cap and suck.
They can easily get out of cap hell next offseason. You sheep are only spouting off about it because all you can do is mimic whatever a sportwriter writes and how he slants it.

Simple question: is the Bucs D better with or without McCoy THIS year?
The right answer is better with.
If they trade him, it damn well better be for a pick and not the most overhyped football player I’ve ever seen in Duke Johnson.

  43. tmaxcon Says:

    Tony LA

It has not mattered with him for 9 years why is she so important this year

  44. THETRUTH Says:

    Tony

Where has Duke showed you he is not a good players. He has been consists since college.
I think he owns many records in Miami where some top NFL backs played
Look at career stats 4+ average carry on part time play
And massive amount of receptions on worst team in league most years 1-31 2 seasons

  45. Mike Johnson Says:

    Great post Buc Bonzai!!
