The Lowdown On Sean Bunting

April 26th, 2019

Breakdown.

Joe has noticed a lot of folks freaking out about the Bucs drafting Sean Bunting from Central Michigan.

Joe also understands that few locals are glued to the tube watching MAC football. So Joe turned to Dane Brugler, the NFL draft analyst for The Athletic.

Let’s just say Brugler thinks the Bucs got a steal as Brugler believed Bunting could have been a first-round pick.

A two-year starter at Central Michigan, Bunting lined up at left cornerback for the Chippewas, playing both press-man and zone coverages. He recorded multiple interceptions in each of his three seasons, adding several impact plays on special teams, including a blocked punt and 60-yard scoop-and-score after a blocked field goal. Bunting has the athleticism to run better routes than the receiver and although his undisciplined mechanics lead to mistakes, he is usually in position to recover. Despite his thin build, he competes with a cover-and-clobber mentality throughout the lifespan of the route and can eliminate the mismatch advantage larger pass-catchers usually have vs. cornerbacks. Overall, Bunting needs to get stronger and become a more technically-sound player, but he plays loose and suffocates the catch point, projecting as borderline starter as a rookie and full-time starter in year two.

Joe has to confess he has seen maybe three Chippewas games in the past two or three years so Joe cannot speak confidently about Bunting.

But if a guy like Brugler thinks Bunting was at worst a second-day pick, this Bunting may not be that awful.

Hey, Antonio Brown played at Central Michigan.

This kid is a day 1 starter and was 26 out
Of 100 ? I love this pic and he will be a STUD !!!

  2. DI Says:

Just another case of people looking to draft names they know rather than talent.

  3. Rod Munch Says:

    Sounds solid, hope he’s right.

  4. walkergodeep Says:

the guy did not allow one td all 2018

  5. Hodad Says:

Lord, I hope he works out, did they move him to safety yet?

  6. Capt. Blighe Says:

SMDH At Least we will be in position to get the top QB next year

  7. Joe in Michigan Says:

I was surprised, but he’s big and fast (unlike MJ Stewart last year, hahaha). We’ll know in a few years how it worked out for us. No sense in worrying now.

  8. Miketb19 Says:

This kids legit I’ve watched a lot of MAC Games and he definitely stood out plus with his size he will be our other outside corner and put Hargreaves back in the slot where he plays his best plus with the kind of Defense Bowles plays all 3 of our main corners will be right up in people faces playing press coverage so much the only thing he need to get better at is not getting so handsy down the field but with our defensive coaching staff that can get coached out of him

  9. Slugglife Says:

He’s not afraid to tackle. That’s a plus.

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

    “You sheep never learn

The Day Jason Gump gets fired is the day the Bucs Franchise gets better”

  11. Dreghost Says:

I’m so done with the Bucs! Year after year the scouts chose to get high while picking the second round players for some reason! Thanks Jason Licht

  12. Buc68 Says:

The larger issue we need to draft a corner in the second round after selecting two corners last year. I guess it’s water under the bridge.

  13. Buccfan305 Says:

Freaking out is an understatement !! I’m S#!ting bricks..

  14. fail Says:

BULLSP!T Shame on the Joes 4 posting this garbage. THIS WAS A TERRIBLE PICK! Two in a FREAKIN ROW! #FireAriansNow

Hey man, if one of those guys moves to safety or at least is backup depth for safety, it’s all good.

  16. Slugglife Says:

    Fail

Why are you so down on this kid? He’s fast, physical, and tackles well. What’s the problem?

  17. Slugglife Says:

Dreghost- there’s always the dolphins, jags, of falcons. Pick one and GTFOH.

  18. Unimpressed Says:

    Yes, polish the turd

  19. Joeypoppems Says:

Size and athleticism is appealing. Add in 4.4 speed. Bunting is something we dont have in our CBs right now.

A lot of people, including me, wanted Greedy in that spot. If the defense is gonna be aggressive, the CBs are gonna have to be able to tackle and support the run. Thats not what Greedy does.

Bunting might fit this defense better than Greedy

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Bleacher Report did a piece back on Mar 12th titled ‘Best 2019 NFL Draft Prospects Nobody Is Talking About’. Sean Bunting was featured in there as having 1st Round potential, although they do say that he’ll need some ‘refining’ before he’d become a starting CB. And yet at the same time other draft outfits like Walter Football rank him well down on the list of CBs in the draft this year (Rnds 5-7).

Hard to know what to think at this point. It looks too familiar … another of Jasons’ 2nd Round foibles? But I doubt it this time. Odds are that Todd Bowles evaluated our defense VERY thoroughly and came to the conclusion that the outside CBs we have don’t cut the mustard. He must’ve also felt that our DLine can put enough pressure on the QBs as they now stand, since we passed on several potential stud DEs (like Jaylon Ferguson) to draft a CB. Here’s hoping his instincts are right-on.

  21. Ugotrobbed Says:

Walter Camp rated him as the 35 ranked corner. Unbelievable!

  22. Ready2bucball Says:

Getting real tired of all’the negative people on this site..tgis kid has not played one snap and y’all want to fire everyone…the kid is physical and covers well and fast and already the bucs defence is getting better with speed and range yet y’all think Todd Bowles and crew know nothing ! I’m about sick of the joes and of the people that comment and I am tuning out and off this site for a while.. You guys so k like the picks you think will and good luck being miserable..pretty soon your wife’s will leave your miserable @sses 2..

  23. Slugglife Says:

Joey- that was the knock on greedy- he was scared to tackle. This kid puts his head down and thumps. And he’s FN fast! Some of these “fans” just need something to cry about since their lives suck.

  24. Slugglife Says:

    Readytobucball

Boom. Nailed that one. These guys need to get laid. Can’t use em around here.

  25. Brett Says:

Skeptical of this with the 7th pick in round 2. MAC has placed a lot of people in the NFL… we will see.

  26. Capt. Blighe Says:

He would be a great pick in the 4th round

  27. Gooberton Says:

Way too many Goobers on this site. Idiot so called fans.

  28. WhatTheBuc Says:

The reason most of you guys don’t know anything about Sean Bunting is because you just don’t know anything. This is a top 4 corner rated in 1st or second round. Do some research. You cant just turn on the TV on draft day and think you’re a GM. You don’t know 70% of these players admit it.

  29. WhatTheBuc Says:

Brugler puts out one of the largest player evaluations “the Beast.” He has Bunting rated 4. “Fail” sits on her couch and cant pick Ed too tall Jones out of a lineup of horse jockeys but thinks this is a bad pick.

  30. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @What the Buc

“You don’t know 70% of these players admit it.”

I can admit it brother. And like you I suspect with the possible exception of LUV most others don’t either.

I had enough trouble keeping up with the top picks.

I do know however Pittsburgh did pretty well with MAC players…Antonio Brown…also from CMU and Big Ben who played at my son’s alma mater Miami of Ohio.

  31. BuccoBoras Says:

    He’s a 6’ press corner with a 4.42 40. And a ballhawk with a 41.5 vertical. I don’t know why guys are complaining.

  32. Arian Nation Says:

Watch his highlight reel, he’s constantly out of position playing against high school kids. The announcer said they were picking on Bunting tonight.

They were picking on a CB playing on a 1-11 team at Central Nowhere U.

Trayvon Mullen, the best CB in the draft was still on the board.
Mullen was the MVP in the National Championship game against freaking Alabama with 6 tackles, a sack and an interception.

He played on an island at Clemson because nobody was stupid enough to throw his way.

Then Gump trades Darrell Henderson (70th pick) to the Rams for the 94th and 99th pick. Somebody needs to change the locks at One Buc Place and fire Licht tonight.

I pity the Joes for having to put a positive spin on this sh!t show.

  33. Scott Says:

It’s all a gamble licht sucks could have drafted him round later -could have got greedy Williams and this guy Lets face it Why does licht still have a job- he drafted Roberto pk FSU. We are a joke still the glazers get my money_ I’m a idiot

  34. Arian Nation Says:

‘I think a Jaws reference would be appropriate at this point.

“We’re gonna need a bigger bench!”

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

    My first reaction was, “WHO?!”
Kid’s got the accolades and the measureables. OK, lets go.

  36. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

Walkergodeep that better than any of our current dbs can say about their play last year. Hope he dominates in tampa GO BUCS
