Talent Question Addressed

Answers talent question

The Tampa Bay talent pool was thinned by the losses of big names in Adam Humphries, Brent Grimes, DeSean Jackson and Kwon Alexander this offseason. (Can’t put Gerald McCoy in that category yet.)

But the Bucs did add lesser names in Brashad Perriman, Deone Buchanon, Shaq Barrett and super-valuable punter Bradley Pinion.

Are the Bucs better than they were a one year ago before the NFL Draft? Joe asked general manager Jason Licht that question yesterday and Licht didn’t give a resounding, ‘Yes!’

“I’d like to think so,” Licht replied. “We think we have a talented team, but we know that we have some pieces we need to add, too. We need to add to it. We are not a finished product yet and, you know, we have the draft coming up, we have moves that we can make all the way up through training camp. So you gotta keep that in mind too.”

Yes, there’s plenty of talent on the way and that could be on the way. Remember, the Bucs added two starting offensive linemen after the start of preseason in 2015, Joe Hawley and Gosder Cherilus, and then proceeded to be a dominant running team and put a starting quarterback in the Pro Bowl.

Are the Bucs better than they were one year ago? Absolutely not, which is depressing. But it’s early in the process and Joe isn’t crying.

I don’t find generic coach-speak / Gm-speak to be very newsworthy or noteworthy, personally.

  4. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Last year the JPP trade happened on March 22nd. Does Licht have another acquisition up his sleeves just before or after the draft?

  5. tmaxcon Says:

the bucs roster is right where it needs to be to capture another coveted basement title

  6. tmaxcon Says:

the real question is will BA bail before he surpasses loser lovie on the wins list….

  7. Defense Rules Says:

tmaxcon … Refresher: regardless of how long BA decides to remain as HC, his replacement is already on-board … Todd Bowles. And when that happens, BA will move UP to become our ‘President of Football Operations’ (or whatever they decide to call it). This 1st year or 2 let’s Bowles focus on FIXING THE DEFENSE, without the bullcrap of being dual-hatted as the HC AND DC. (That doomed Koetter)

I doubt this’ll be a winning season, simply because of all the ‘hassles’ that BA & Bowles have inherited. Takes time to raise a Pirate Ship that’s taken on as much water as ours has. But we haven’t gone under yet and I do have high hopes … FOR THE FUTURE (as in probably 2-3 years away). Just want to see improvement this year. (Actually that’s a pretty low bar now that I think of it).

  8. Pickgrin Says:

BA and Bowles are going to win with Dirk’s team – THIS YEAR!

There’s a good bit more talent already in place than many seem to think…

2019 will reveal answers to the pessimists, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Not there yet Says:

Yes you can’t say your team is talented at 5-11 so he was smart to dodge the question that way. Talent we will find out for sure but at least I think the players will be better prepared.

He we go with media leading the charge and putting the hopes of the franchise in the hands of rookies. It ain’t gonna happen, if we get one game changer in the draft even two that’s great but if it ain’t quarterback it won’t matter. Rookies have average seasons for the most part so it comes down to the talent licht has added up to this point before the draft that really matter since you do need a complete team not 2-3 rookies

How can you even put Grimes ne up there? What y’all smoking?

  12. catcard202 Says:

I’ll go out on that limb & say the Bucs are better today, than this time last yr..Bucs will win 3extra games (min) just by cutting Anger.

(His punting was fine but he couldn’t hold for schit…His holding cost the team 3 Kickers alone!)

  13. JA Says:

    Defense—

You actually try to engage him with civil dialogue?
Personally, I think you’d have more luck with a household pet.

    But that’s me …

  14. mark2001 Says:

Defense…what doomed Koetter is that he is a nice guy…like Rah is…but doesn’t have the winning respect and disciplinary coaching characteristics to be a good HC. During the game where Jameis “thumped the helmet” and Mike lost it, I said that the players felt they needed to take it upon themselves to deal with what was going on the field and with the Refs. Koetter should have stepped up before that and read the Refs the riot act and backed his guys. And they never should have thought to take that into their own hands to receive justice. And what was Koetters response? I didn’t see it. It isn’t rocket science…. At that moment, and in seeing Koetter’s response, I knew he was toast. It is straightforward management or HC criteria…you back your guys and they don’t step beyond the directives/ lines and take things into their own hands. You can’t have that.

  15. jerseybuc Says:

DefenseRules You better hope that Bowles is NOT our next coach. He was so over his head with the Jets fans couldn’t wait to get rid of him. Horrible clock management, no real sense of running an offense, very slow to react to game situations and he let guys get out of control in the locker room. NO thank you on TB. Guy knows his D, but he is not a HC.

  16. passthebuc Says:

One thing you do not know. how the team will jell under the new administration. If all the theory worked out according to plan, the lightning would still be playing

  17. Clw JB Says:

I recall very clearly an astute coach coming into an under-performing team, adding a host of second tier FA on one side of the ball and then winning a Super Bowl.

Not calling for the SB this year, but could easily jump to 9-7 and be on the cusp of turning it around for real…

The coaching has been bush league at best, no discipline, no accountability, just an inmates running the asylum overall mentality.

Watch all this change before your eyes

Did we offset our FA losses, NO

Did we need Hump/DJax, NO – $19 mil saved BTW

Kwon, love the heart not the player -asinine contract he got, more power to him

This coaching staff will be the difference eventually

  18. Clw JB Says:

and the next HC is Harold Goodwin IMO – remember the Glazers interviewed him last year and Bowles persona is not HC as he showed in NY

  19. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Ol’ Licht Weight…job security beyond belief, curator of the best offense ever and a robust winning percentage of .3375%. Why not another 5 years of this?!

  20. Destinjohnny Says:

It’s hard to win with an awful gm

  21. TOM Says:

Well Licht. As Reagan said to Carter. “Well there you go again”
