Bucco Bruce Arians talks special teams

Yes, Bucs fans, head coach Bucco Bruce Arians said today that the biggest signing of the offseason is the new punter.

What the Michael Koenen is going on?

Well, Arians explained over a breakfast session with Joe and other media in Phoenix that special teams were a huge concern of his after he arrived at One Buc Palace. (For the record, Joe shared Arians’ deep concern about special teams three weeks ago.)

And as a result, punter Bradley Pinion was signed last month just after Bryan Anger was booted from the roster. Anger, 30, remains unemployed.

Pinion doing double duty as a kickoff specialist will free up kicker Cairo Santos to just focus on field goals, Arians said, adding that should keep Santos healthy because he has gotten injured on kickoffs through his career.

Back in 2011, coming of a 10-6 season, the then-frugal Bucs’ big offseason signing was a punter, too, Michael Koenen.

It was unthinkable then that a Tampa Bay team yearning for veteran leadership would go cheap and just grab a punter on the market. Eight years later, it seems that was the strongest upgrade they could afford.

Of course, the Bucs made other free agent signings this season, including a special teams guy like DE/LB Shaq Barrett.

Again, it’s Arians (not Joe) who called the punter the top offseason signing. Joe gets it, but it sure is unsettling.

While it is probably “tongue in cheek”, Special Teams is an important aspect of the game. See every season since Matt Bryant left the team! AND, until they do away with kickoffs, this particular punter will take away some of the duties and instances where a kicker can be preserved.
The top offseason signing is Bruce Arians!

Perhaps a new ‘holder’ will improve the kicking results. Still can’t believe every kicker over the past 8 years was a bust.

  3. BuccOff Says:

    Gotta love special teams.

I wonder (rhetorically) what another more accomplished general counsel’s opinion might….be….when posts on here, are withheld, either for a minute, 60 minutes, or in perpetuity….especially when no supposed “violations” occur.

    Somethin’ to really consider…

  4. rrsrq Says:

Dang, they just approved offensive and defensive pass interference reviewable, Mike Evans might rack up some frequent flyer penalties. He does use his hands to separate quite a bit

  5. straightcashhomey Says:

    Yep!! We shall see

Punt on 1st down to prevent America’s turn over machine from giving the ball up on our side of the field.

For anyone who watched the hour long video with Arians…..you had to notice how many times he had to clear his throat……I don’t know if it is asthma or some other respiratory condition but it sure was noticeable.

As for the punter being an important signing…..I certainly agree….but I think Barrett & Perriman were also important.

  8. Greg Says:

Arians has a plan and we aren’t privy to it. Licht has to dance with it because Arians is the reason he has a job. We can whine and moan about these superficial transactions but he he has a plan and we will be aware after the draft and the following moves. We can whine or give hm the benefit of the doubt.

    Pollen perhaps?

  10. sandwichman Says:

I will believe it when i see. No reason to get excited bout the doomed team. Now they woman coaches. What a joke.

TBBF- I definitely noticed but I chalked it up to a cold or something, not concerned ATM.

Rrsq- every good receiver pushes off, Mike just over extends his arms instead of a quick compact push and he gets busted because he is one gangly Mofo and it’s more obvious. I think he gets beat up a ton too which might make this rule beneficial to him as well.

Sandwich man- I love the optimism. Make sure you tell your daughter one day she can be anything in the world! (Except a football coach or the daughter of a wise man)

  12. scbucsfan Says:

Sandwichman stellar thoughts. I hope your shifts at Subway don’t interfere with your English as a second language courses.

Best highlight of 2011 season was cancer93 trip to IR….

This is where I call bullspit.

If Arians was so concerned with Special Teams, Santos would be out of here. He was horrible on field goals last year.

Better to bring in Matt Byant. At least he will make his points.

    @rrsrq

Doesn’t that just means it’s reviewable AFTER it gets called? (So they can see if it’s really a foul or not)

I don’t think they can review a play and then throw a new flag after the review…

Hmm,so he wanted JPP. Couldn’t wait to get his paws on Jameis. VH3 was high on his draft board. And O.J. makes his mouth water. I don’t know about y’all but it seems very clear to me he wanted this job because so many players he wanted to coach while in zone just so happen to already be present on our roster. We bout to be a problem next season.

  18. Jamaal Stanley Says:

See while you sqaurycubes b:/$& and moan about what didn’t come inn in free agency,in this man’s minds eye he walked into basically everything he needs to win. I see some of y’all record predictions. Ima remind ya when the time is right.

  19. cmurda Says:

Yeah man. It’s not like BA hasn’t been saying it all along. Without trying to humiliate Dirk, BA is basically saying our coaching was dog turd. We about to find out how much talent is already on this roster and how we look with a real staff. I’m pumped about B.A. but I think I’m even more amped about Todd Bowles. He walked into a disaster with the feeble Jets. This man knows how to run a defense. Lefty looked the part too when given the chance as O Coordinator. This staff is legit.

  20. D1 Says:

    TBBF,

Yes, pollen in Arizona. As people from other states moved to Arizona they brought their preferences for more green trees and green grass and flowers. I’m referring to non native plants, trees, grass, flowers, You’d be surprised by the amount of business z Lowe’s and Home Depot garden dept does weekly.

It wasn’t that long ago that Arizona was a relocation preference for people suffering from allergies . That is changing.
