Missouri DT Heads To Tampa

April 27th, 2019

Bucs DT Terry Beckner.

Joe has never met Terry Beckner of Missouri before. But Joe is just going to bet the defensive tackle has dog in him.

Why does Joe write this? Beckner is from East St. Louis, Ill. Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of driving through that pearl of the Midwest knows what it takes to get the hell out of there and into an SEC school.

Puppies don’t get out.

Beckner is likely little more than camp meat as a seventh-round pick by the Bucs today. However, he may have the attitude to survive. He’s already a survivor in the game of life.

Beckner was a team captain at Missouri, which is a trait admired by Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

He’s not a DB, or kicker that’s good.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Don’t think you can count on him as GMC’s replacement….but he is cheaper.

  9. Tonguepunchmyfartbox Says:

Maybee they plan on moving him to RG

Say Joe, my 1st yr college roommate was from East St Louis. I did not..believe the tales he use to spout. And then I went home with him for Thanksgiving…I mean..good thing he had my back. cause the Sh..I witnessed there. Lets hope Beckner is as tough where he came from.

  11. mark2001 Says:

    E. St. Louis..makes bad parts of Chicago look soft, comparatively. I’d bet the guy is tough as nails.

  12. mark2001 Says:

Weren’t the Spinks boxing brothers from E. St. Louis, as well?

  13. stpetebucsfan Says:

At the bottom of the draft we should be happy to just find decent “projects”. Some of these guys may have to work just to make the practice squad…but if we keep them they may develop.

See Brate…how long was he on the practice squad before emerging? In fact didn’t he even spend some time on NO’s practice squad. Not all guy show their talent or even given the opportunity to show their talent without the time and hard work to earn it.

  14. Ludicrous Speed Says:

We have a need at DT and could have had Gerald Willis from the U, top overall ranked player left with Position Rank: 10, Overall Rank: 104, Grade: 71

and we take a guy with Position Rank: 17, Overall Rank: 195, Grade: 56
He’s listed as a a tall (something you don’t want in an interior lineman where you’re trying to get under your opponent) defensive tackle with below-average weight, length and top-end speed.

How is this what you want when you could have had the top rated player left, who’s listed as a highly disruptive interior defensive lineman with a quick first step and shock in his hands to quickly penetrate gaps. He locates the ball and chases with good effort.

  15. Joe Says:

Spinks bros were from St. Louis proper.

    Mike:

East. St. Louis is the only place ever heard of where judges regularly throw out tickets to people who roll through stoplights at night to avoid car jacks and getting shot.

  16. Ludicrous Speed Says:

I would wager that Gerald Willis from the U has some dog in him as well to have been evaluated as that much better of a player than Beckner.

  17. Mitch Says:

Great, great pick. If he had been healthy during his career he would have been a 1st or 2nd rounder. NFL.com had him projected as a 3-5th rounder. I am excited to see how he develops.

  18. Skywalker Says:

He isn’t good at all. Watched the Florida game film just now. Didn’t do much but a poor mans spin move. Here is the link. https://youtu.be/QrAan7dhlEk

East St Louis, I remember it well. It was 100% Black back in the 1960s when I would go there to play basketball. It was a very tough neighborhood then, I cannot even imagine how tough a life it is now with all the drugs, etc.

  20. Frank813 Says:

Didn’t you refer to Adam Humphries as camp meat at one time? And also Peyton Barber? And Cam Brate?

  21. ThunderSack Says:

Dude was highly touted going in to college. Unfortunately blew out his knees and doesn’t seem to be all of the way back yet. Hope he can contribute.

    @ Ludicrous

I am with you re: Gerald Willis (his brother is Landon Collins), don’t know why he has fallen so much, but I am just stunned here. The guy led all of FBS with TFL’s. I was good with Devin White pick because I thought that we would continue to build the trenches with a deep D-line draft. I’m thing Jaylen Ferguson equal production, I thought he came in for a visit, I am thinking E. Jenkins on the O-line (mean and strong player) that could come in at RG and then move to C when Ryan Jensen contract got too fat. Gerald Willis an option, Joe Jackson both from the u, how do you think those guys on the backend got those turnovers to wear the turnover chain.

  23. ATLBucs Says:

Dude is fast. Maybe they should make him a linebacker, or a corner

  25. YucLife Says:

I’m a fan of the of the last couple picks ( minus the kicker ) and @Joe he will be playing on Sunday’s !!! I’m from the Lou and the east side isn’t a place you want to venture in to..

I just looked and there is clearly plays off which I hate but there are some good things in that film bro also. What DT looks good every play besides Donald.

PLEASE don’t cut and paste large excerpts of other people’s work here. Thank you. –Joe

Dude plays with some energy! Flies around and tackles with a mean streak.

  29. Magadude Says:

Sorry Joe, crap article, but in your defense, what else is there. When driving through St Louis and surviving is attribute for why someone can be drafted into the NFL, sad. Yeah, team captain, yada yada yada. You covered it. Which is more than others do, and more than he deserves..

Sad draft. Sad day. This season ticket holder is already drafting an email for Brian Ford explaining why once again, ticket prices are too high and decisions are too bad to sell out a single game…unless the other team fans wake up.

  31. Magadude Says:

Joe, when I emerge from my draft depression, likely Monday afternoon, I’ll check myself. Just curious…

Man, I am stoked we addressed the D line in the lower picks. I can hardly keep my enthusiam to myself. Yahoo. Wow. Jumping up and down. So excited I can’t stand it. Yeah, you get the point. Sad.

So my question, if you know….is what are the historical chances of these stellar late picks actually making the squads over previous (also “stellar”) picks of making the squads?

Such info will go well with what I’m sure you willl report on Monday about all the UDFAs that have upside.

Pardon me for being flat. I feel like puking with this draft….

  32. Magadude Says:

Thank God the draft is over. Amen.

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m lazy so I don’t have the info…..but I would be interested in how Cam Brate, Adam Humphries & Peyton Barber ranked against others in their position…..

We have received great production from all of them so far….and they weren’t drafted.

I find it hilarious that posters freak out about late round picks as if there is an exact science in the rankings.

I don’t think players are ranked by heart, effort, attitude and other immeasurable qualities.

  34. Gooberton Says:

    Excuse me Holmes!

  35. Magadude Says:

@TBBF…the point is clear. Licht basically last year’s draft of failures and checked the box with real needs in the late rounds. Doesn’t cut it. I am betting he wasn’t even there today.

It is RARE for an UDFA to perform. Yes, Brate and Hump are exceptions. Hump…couldn’t afford to keep…management failure. Barber. Not a starting RB and we continue with that charade because of not being able to afford anyone else. Add to that…Jones…drafted…not good so far.

The occasional lucky find in UDFA should never define a succesful offseason.

Everyone from the Midwest that has ever traveled around the area knows about E. St. Louis. Remember the scene from National Lampoon’s Vacation, where Griswold drives the Wagon Queen Family Truckster through E. St. Louis? A little exaggerated for humor, but not too much.

Lichtenstein likes to draft guys that aren’t Cornerbacks ONLY after round 3….

He knows how special it will be when one of them finally turns into that “hidden gem” that only a pool jumping, stupid Alabama roll tide looking blazer wearer, fat slob super talent evaluator would be able to spot. I feel like these guys are scratch off tickets that I buy Gold Rush NFL Draft version, just spend $20 every time because you Might just get the $100,000 right Jason???

You and anybody who signed off on this draft are an STD and a (TMAX CON CANCER) forget BUCBALL this is a new thing. CANCER-BALL

Licht is a puppet. he had nothing to do with this draft. No GM with a sane mind would have redrafted 3 no name DBs in rounds 2-3 and top it off with a kicker.
This is BA and his staff having a laugh in the war room while JL is facing media.

Or, it is something the team’s franchise quarterback often refers to.

Not to mention forty- and fifty-something NFL coaches.

  50. Joe Says:

Didn’t you refer to Adam Humphries as camp meat at one time? And also Peyton Barber? And Cam Brate?

That’s generally what sixth- and seventh-round draft picks and undrafted free agents are. Feel free to research the odds of those guys making it to their second contracts in the NFL are.

But yeah, someone wins the lottery twice a week, therefore it’s a sound retirement plan, right? The Bucs actually do better with camp meat than the third day of the draft. Coincidence why this team is garbage?

  51. Anonymous Says:

Wow, 120 tackles, from a DT? Impressive. Also 32TFL and 13.5 sacks. Those numbers, for a guy who was recovering mid-career from a major knee issue, that’s impressive production.

For a reminder Via had 99 tackles, 15TFL and 9.5 sacks, so production wise, this guy way out produced Vita.

    Just saying.

Anywho this guy is a former 5-star recruit from what I read and it was really injuries that knocked him off course. I wonder if, for once, the Bucs take one of these injury values and actually get something out of it.

  53. BigMacAttack Says:

He reminds me of Warren Sapp. Don’t count this guy out just yet. The 4,5,6 picks on top teams like the Pats often end up available.

  54. BA FAN Says:

Lindy’s lists Beckner a fourth round pick and if he hadn’t been injured twice he would have likely been a second pick; so this was a great seventh round pickup by Licht and the DE he got from Iowa was a good value pick too. Licht was thinking BA being a former offensive coach before he was a HC in Arizona would favor offensive picks and Licht was prepared to make them but BA’s thinking was the real weak link was the defense and he had decided to fix that first. Licht obliged. With his outstanding defensive coaches and the new defensive talent Licht got them expect a big jump on the defensive side this year. If we had that last year we would have had a good year. I think Liedtke can be the answer at RG. If BA can develop Cappa to play RT, a position Warhop never prepared him for, we should be better at Offense too!

  55. Isaac haggins Says:

Heck of a 7 th round pick, has talent and isn’t lazy , kinda looks like Levon Kirkland flying around on some plays ( yes we know he was a Lb ) . To do what he did with three major knee surgeries is great and I think some of his film is pretty good .

Prob not the next Sapp but with time and coaching ( disciplines and effort) he can be a player in the NFL for 5 to 10 years .

Now trade McCoy for a O lineman or Lb and sign Suh or even Wilkerson .
