Meet Your New Linebacker

April 26th, 2019

“God makes no mistakes.”

Damn, this Devin White has a career when his football days are done. TV and radio beckon.

But first things first.

He’s your new Bucs inside linebacker and Bucco Bruce Arians sounds like he’s going to use White as a spy on the best player an opponent has on offense.

Buccaneers.com Casey Phillips caught up with White as he arrived at One Buc Palace today.

Dude bleeds good vibes. Let’s hope that translates into quarterbacks having rough Sundays playing the Bucs.

As White told the local pen and mic club today about him playing for the Bucs, “God makes no mistakes.”

  1. Pete Mitchell Says:

Can’t wait to watch this dude break Christian McCafry in-half.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

In college Vita Vea had 9.5 sacks and 15 TFL in in 37 games, White had 8.5 sacks and 20 TFL in 34 games.

Also, for the record, James had more sacks last year than Vita, just saying.

So if Vita is more than just a 3-4 run stuffing NT, then you’re getting production there. If Nassib is more than a flash in the pan and can do it again, then you’re getting production there. Also JPP is still there. Additionally if you’re keeping McCoy, then he’s your DE in a 3-4, and moves back inside when you play nickel and you’re getting pressure there. Finally, the big one, if they let David rush from the edge, you’re getting production there. Who knows, maybe Spence, playing as a true stand-up edge rusher, maybe he wakes up from his 2 year slump (doubtful, but not cutting the kid at this point).

The Bucs really didn’t have issues getting to the QB last year, they had problems covering receivers. That’s why the Bucs need to get a corner at the top of the 2nd. They literally have, by far, the worst depth chart in all of football – and even Sapp and Rice couldn’t save the 2003 Bucs when Brian Kelly went down and they had no depth at corner. For those that think pressure makes corners better – well that’s true, but you can’t turn a pile of turds into a diamond no matter how much pressure you apply.

    Nice young man.
    Great personality and composure.

3 phrases he didn’t use that really impressed me were:

    “Like I say/said”
    “Ya know what I’m sayin”?
“I am just blessed to be here/ God is good”

Really look forward to him being the new leader of our new defense!

  4. Lamarcus Says:

In this particular draft of 2019 (weak draft) choosing Devin White was the right choice. No need for justifying

  5. Mike Johnson Says:

We will see. But I do get the feelin this guy is the real McCoy. On film he is quick, hits hard and moves from sideline to sideline with ease. Welcome aboard Mr White.

  6. Buc believer Says:

@Mike Johnson.. I agree he does appear to be the real McCoy. To bad Mccoy hasn’t been the real McCoy

  7. Wng Says:

He speaks a little like Derrick Brooks, let’s hope he plays like him. Only time will tell if he becomes a better player than Allen or Oliver. So far what i’ve Seems and heard from him, looks like he is going to be decent pick! Let’s hope we don’t screw up the 2nd and 3rd rounds again. Jason, please don’t try to top your pick of aguayo and pick a punter in the 2nd round! Haha

  8. DRFEELGOOD Says:

I am thrilled with this pick because it checks all of the boxes. Great leader. Can sack and harass the QB. Can run like a deer sideline to sideline. Can cover downfield. BIG hitter!! Go watch his highlights as I am sure many of you have done and it’s immediately apparent that he is special. When was the last time we had someone be assigned to “spy” the other team’s best player? When Mr. Brooks used to torment Mike Vick. That concept hasn’t even been part of our plans since then. So, if he is the next R. Lewis, D. Brooks, P. Willis, B. Urlacher, or L. Kueckly, or even in that ball park, then this plug and play badass will be a MAJOR reason why this defense gets turned around. Tonight, SO many excellent prospects remain that we should get a valuable player at a position of need (again) in rounds 2 and 3. GO BUCS!!

  9. rrsrq Says:

Hopefully Devin White is the culmination of:
    Derrick Brooks smarts
    Scott Brantley hitting
    Hardy Nickerson toughness
    Hugh Greens tenacity
    Batman Woods style
    Kwon’s field temperament
    His own speed

  10. Joeypoppems Says:

I love this guy. Just listened to his press conference. Extremely impressed with the person he is. He is a face of the franchise type of player and the Bucs should be damn proud to have him

  11. AlteredEgo Says:

rrsrq…..if he hit like Brantley did to the Lions QB ( Eric Hipple) it think….he’d get a 2 year suspension…

  12. adam from ny Says:

excited for the pick…but, honestly he he does not speak the english language too well tho…hopefully that comes with time…he has about 10 years or more to fine tune that, before he becomes a talking head… joe if you call him well spoken — well then joe you must be buggin out…
the good thing is he is here to put on a helmet and play football…a la derrick brooks

  13. AlteredEgo Says:

I just searched for the Scot Brantley hit on youtube…..search under Scot Brantley “The hardest hit a qB has ever taken”
for all you wussified youngsters…when LB’s and DB’s owned the tuff on their side of the LOS

  14. AlteredEgo Says:

perhaps Joe will allow this to be posted….Old School footballhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UE2fk1pHYU&fbclid=IwAR2b8DTFLMb5tqS7ZqfToQen-NkGnGJIo4TJhiUsYVYI-sq2Zmo93hNxbOM

  15. Capt Kidd Says:

Walterfootball.com says the Steelers tried to trade up to #3 for him.

  16. Bird Says:

This kid is gonna be special.

Class act. Genuine. Loyal. Happy to be here. Stud.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Now I’m glad Gruden & Mayock didn’t pick White…..

Put him on Mccaffery…..put him on Julio 4.39….White 4.42
    Put him on Kamara…….4.56

    Fastest Buc Defender……

  18. Cobraboy Says:

@ Rod: I’m not going to pass judgement on the Bucs “inability” to cover receivers based on a horrendous coverage scheme.

The way the CB’s were told to play off the ball at the snap made sure there were receivers open from the beginning of their route.

I mean, at least two DB’s, Hargreaves and Davis, were PRESS corners in college, that’s what made them good. So what does Smith have them do? Play 10 tads off WR’s and let those WR’s run wild.

    Idiot.

Wanna bet we’ve seen the last of butter-soft coverage by Bucs DB’s?

  19. adam from ny Says:

just watched the devin white press conference…i was a little critical in my above statement – that was from listening to him talk briefly with casey phillips…maybe he was a bit nervous or something…

his press conference was great…seems like a terrific young kid and a very exciting piece to add to the bucs defense…and he sounds like he genuinely wants to be here too

  20. gilhealy Says:

    good job @adam ny.

  21. theodore Says:

    Nice cap!

  22. Architek79 Says:

    Homerun

  23. Architek79 Says:

Once he gets up to speed – it’s gonna be game over

  24. Architek79 Says:

    Kuechly on steroids physically

  25. MadMax Says:

    Love my pick, Mr. White!

  26. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Rod Munch

We may disagree on social issues but I think your football analysis in that post was spot on!

  27. WhatTheBuc Says:

Finally some positivity. Rod, good analysis. The Derwin James take is technically correct but Vea missed all of training camp, was recovering when he came back, and had to get into playing shape. Vea was a rotational player and had his 4th sack called back on a penalty. I know, those are excuses but let’s see how they compare after a full season from Vea.
