Collecting Safeties

April 26th, 2019

Bucs add another safety

No team in the NFL seems to have more two-bit safeties and nickel corners than the Bucs.

It appears it isn’t enough.

Just a few weeks after announcing second-year corner M.J. Stewart was being moved to safety and with a slew of other safeties on the roster, the Bucs had to add another one with the 36th pick of tonight’s third round of the NFL Draft, this time Mike Edwards of Kentucky.

Edwards showed ball skills at Kentucky over his four seasons with 10 interceptions through 48 games.

You can make up your mind about the guy from his video below.

This is malpractice by Licht Weight…walk him off the property. He’s awful.

  2. Tbbucs3 Says:

Definitely better than Jordan Whitehead. Thanks Bowels!

  3. Blackmagic00 Says:

I can’t wait until next year when we draft a couple corners and safeties.

  4. MadMax Says:

Arians wasnt kidding when he said if you have 3, well then get a 4th!

Wow! Im hoping theres some sense to this madness going on in the draft!
    We’ll see.

  5. 2020 here we come Says:

I’m convinced arians is drafting guys so we can run the team like peewee football and have the guys play bothways. Maybe one of these DBs can play the line better then Dotson…

  6. Colin Says:

His comp on NFL.com is actually MJ Stewart

  7. Buc Raybolt Says:

All this draft tells me is that our secondary was worse than anyone thought lol

  8. JP_09 Says:

    Maybe we’re going to run a 1-2-8 defense….

  9. DooshLaRue Says:

His tape looks pretty good but I’m still baffled by Licht’s choices.

  10. MadMax Says:

    LOL JP….HAHAHAHAHA

  11. MadMax Says:

Theyll be triple teaming Big V!

  12. Unimpressed Says:

Get ready for even more blown assignments than last year

  13. MadMax Says:

Its def going to be a 3-4 D fo sho!….2-5 maybe!

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Obviously Licht isn’t making these picks because they are replacing his previous draft picks.
Bowles isn’t happy with our DBs…….it is obvious.

  15. Radsy Says:

    NFL.com comparable…. MJ Stewart loooool

  16. catcard202 Says:

    Finally a pick I love!

Hard nosed Ohio kid…4yr starter in the SEC. Combo Safety that can play the slot & come down hill tackling in space.

Had a couple breakdowns & got slipped with stutter juke /stiff arm that looked ugly…But a real SOLID late 3rd rd pick. Has that DOG in him.

So far… I see some commonality in each of the Bucs picks so far…They all have twitch & all tackle in space.

(May not agree on some players they passed on…but coming out with a instant starter at MLB / Slot Corner + 2-deep depth at outside CB (behind HG3) & S that will also be a ST nightmare for opponents.

  17. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Collin

LOL I just saw that. Is Jason Licht trolling us at this point?

  18. John Mason Says:

Wow…Will Greer was picked up by the Panthers right after the Buc’s picked….damn I thought we might grab Willin the late 3rd round…looks like we are stuck with Winston for the nx few years…no young QB to bring up…hope Winston does not flame out!

  19. SKBucsFan Says:

I hope it’s Ariens and Bowls that were making the picks. Licht has tried tdrafting a backfield player(s) each year for the past 5 years and it hasn’t worked out well. 6th time a charm?

  20. diddler Says:

This dood I like. Good pick Gump.

  21. Kobe Faker Says:

“Are we going to run out of defensive back jersey numbers?

I wonder which FA corner and safety Gump is going to sign end of training camp”

    Kobe Faker

  22. Tom S. Says:

DB was by far the biggest weakness on the team outside of RG. Unfortunately Licht is essentially proving he hasn’t been able to evaluate the position in the past and is just hacking away at DB’s now.

  23. Givinup! Says:

    Ouch

  24. Clean House Says:

    26 sub par defensive backs
    87 coaches
    1 utter moron

    Go Bucs

  25. QBKilla Says:

Bowles must think that they all suck.

  26. Tbbucs3 Says:

Draft and pray, the Jason Licht war room strategy

  27. Shooters Says:

Maybe now you guys realize why we need to concentrate on defensive end and pass rushers We have no depth and linebacker or defense of tackle or defense event and we have a bunch of apparently bad draft picks from prior years that we are already giving up on.

  28. Colin Says:

Honestly, our defense has been crap, so lets just get a bunch
of new DBs and have some competition and depth.

  29. PriMech54 Says:

These picks have Todd Bowles fingerprints all over them… some of you have absolutely zero idea what you’re talking about when you’re b!t*hing about Licht.

Elite prototype Middle Linebacker who will hold people accountable

Tall, long, fast and rangy corners that can be extremely physical and press (Dean has an extremely high ceiling)

and a guy in Edwards who is a really good football player, always around the football, has good ball skills and is really instinctive. Versatile.

They already told everyone what they’re about to do, but most won’t listen. They’re going to press, blitz, and pressure; and they’re going to do with guys who actually CAN and THRIVE in a press, blitz & pressure scheme.

“We’re not gonna read and react, we’re gonna be physical and attack. Yes indeed, baby” -BA

  30. PriMech54 Says:

Never in my life have i seen a GM take the heat for such badly coached football players as Jason Licht. The previous regime belonged in D2 college football at times, like when Mike Smith made no adjustments after giving up the 4th wheel route in less than one half of football, for example. Or when Dirk admitted that he challenged a play knowing that he had no timeouts left, thus resulting in a critical penalty on a late drive that helped seal the game. I could go all day…

but seriously, some of you guys sit there and try to evaluate players when they had ^^^THIS?!^^^ for a coaching staff and your verdict is that they’re all trash football players? That’s twilight zone type stuff.

  31. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

PriMech- I LOVE the White and Dean picks! But the others are very confusing. The Bunting pick was a huge reach and your write up on Edwards is exactly how people justified the MJ Stewart pick. We already have one of those.
I just feel like we are poorly distributing our assets into one part of the defense and neglecting other parts of the team.

  32. Clw JB Says:

It went off the rails with a major reach at 2, then a better prospect at the same position and another mediocre safety –

Wasted a high second rounder again

Collecting average safeties from around the country

Ignore obvious needs over and over and triple up at positions already filled with youth and inexperience

    Not impressed at all

  33. adam from ny Says:

    bowel movement in effect

    what about “More Juice” Stewart…

    what about “Just Despicable” Evans…

what about Andrew “Most Pickeroonies” Adams…

what about Chris “freight train” Conte

what about…if i just suit up and throw on a cup

  35. adam from ny Says:

and what about the dude…number 39…who got an inordinate amount of playing time with koetter…and ran practiclaly thru the endzone wall…

    i forget his name…

and so on and so on…

lol what if the tandyman can???

  36. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

    Isaiah “crash” Johnson bwahaha

  37. adam from ny Says:

licht is clearly one crazy mofo…his actions warrant medication…he’s a wild dude…at least he figured out ater 3 years to lose the ron burgundy coat

  38. adam from ny Says:

    he figured out after*

  39. adam from ny Says:

the funny thing is the bucs will always be the bucs…we might look back and this will somehow someway be the best draft in team history…a real long shot…but you never know with the bucs

  40. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Another MJ Stewart. Fireeeee Licht! This is the most disappointing draft in Bucs history. Picking Central Michigan and Kentucky DBs…. Fireeeee Licht!

  41. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Jason Licht must be immediately removed. All of his DB picks don’t add up to Derwin James! Fireeeeee Licht!

  42. Jameis Almighty! Says:

    Stewart Hate trending soon…

  43. Jameis Almighty! Says:

I’ve begun to realize even more…. even more… that stupid people think they are smart. Freaking Fire Licht and bring in a real GM.

  44. Clean House Says:

Guess what pri mech- if the coaches sucked that bad, which they did- he should have fired them- and plus he hired them

  45. Defense Rules Says:

@adam from NY … “bowel movement in effect”. LMAO … good one. This has been Todd Bowels draft so far (aahh yes, the ‘price’ for him joining BA to FIX THE BUCS). Everyone was so excited the Bucs are moving to a 3-4. Guess what: THIS is the cost. Todd evaluated our LBs & Secondary and it’s now quite obvious what he figured out: No way Jose … it needed much more speed & more height (Duh).

It’s also obvious that BA might SAY that we’re not rebuilding, and that may be true on offense, but our defense & S/Ts will see a LOT of new shiny faces in 2019. THAT’S sorta-kinda the very definition of rebuilding. And since most of our LBs & Secondary are VERY young, I’d suspect that it’ll take awhile for this defense to gel. Rookies & 2nd year players in the Secondary especially (with very few if any veterans to learn from) WILL make mistakes as they grow together. And since we have yet to FIX our running game, I suspect that a break-even 8-8 season should be counted as a MAJOR SUCCESS in 2019.

  46. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

One common denominator of all these defensive backs we are drafting is, they can all FLY!
Hopefully, they can all cover too, because covered receivers greatly improve a pass rush.

  47. rrsrq Says:

The difference in this years group is take-aways. If BA and company watched all the games last year and they saw two take-aways the first three games then not another until week 12 or 13, I get it. You have guys that FF, INTs and are fast. Bowles saw that the Bucs have a need for speed.

  48. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Although this draft feels a repeat from last year, I do believe licht was trying to address our weakest holes. I honestly feel like we went from one of the weakest passing defense to slightly above average. Give it a few years and we will be strong in this area.

I know many of you believe that the Bucs should have addressed our Dline but in a 3-4 defense, the linebackers and DBs are the most important positions. Now ponder the picks, I think this was a smart draft.

I was hoping we would have picked up 1 or 2 offensive linemen to fix our right side, but according to Arian, the problem on the Oline last year was bad coaching on the running game. If the Bucs draft Oline in the next few picks, I think we’ll improve overall.

Again this draft wasn’t about rebuilding but retooling. If Arian was rebuilding then we would have had another losing season, but by fixing our weakest area then he can build upon the weak areas and improve our winning column.

  49. Havingfitz Says:

Once we trade McCoy for a DB we’ll almost be set in the secondary.

  50. Bucsfanman Says:

LOL! I’ve never seen so many draft gurus/JBF posters! Ya’ll got some strong opinions for something I’m pretty sure that you have ZERO knowledge. This ain’t Madden! There isn’t 3 rounds of Deion Sanders, Reggie Whites, Orlando Paces, or Barry Sanders.
This team got a LOT faster and deeper on the right side of the ball. So quit your effing whining, those players are Buccaneers now.
You don’t belong here if you think you can do better. Yeah, I’m talking to the armchair GMs.

  51. ManzielMadness Says:

    @Bucsfanman

Lol not taking shots at you, just curious, who’s our Edge? Are we relying on Spence/Barret? Scrapping the 3/4, or asking JPP and Nassib to do something different? Is that not a need to you or something that’s considered important to draft in the top 3 rounds?

  52. ManzielMadness Says:

Oops wrong threAd.. had to much to drink last night lol…

  53. jjbucfan Says:

Fanman- everyone is entitled to their opinion- this is a forum to voice those. I don’t like the fact we have drafted 6 dbs in the last 2 years in high rounds. I think the guys we have will be ok in a real NFL defense. However, if we are just a DB away from the playoffs, why didn’t we get honey badger or anyone else in FA? Don’t give me that salary cap crap, we still have a lot of dead weight on this team salary wise that we are gonna have to cut anyway because we can’t sign our rookies. We are addressing 1 area out of multiple areas that need fixing. To do that 2 years in a row is unthinkable.

  54. TOM Says:

It makes me sick to see who they could have had & to see what they actually picked. For God’s sake Glazer’s wake up & fire this worthless GM or sell the team to someone who cares. Of course the Glazer’s are laughing all the way to the bank, at the fans expense. I already lost faith in BA also.

  55. I’m a Tandyman Used to be Bucsfan Says:

I’ll say it again!! Should have never cut Tandy and played him when he was hot !!! Smith screwed this team up that has still yet to recover!! The Edwards kid was good at Kentucky but not a Tandy or Honey Badger!!! What up Bucsfanman My Man!! Good luck this season. Will be checking on you!!👍

  56. Joe Says:

I’ll say it again!! Should have never cut Tandy and played him when he was hot !!!

    Isn’t he out of football?

  57. I’m a Tandyman Used to be Bucsfan Says:

Yep just like Smith who could have won like he did in 2016. But decided not to play Tandy and took Keith down with him when they finally fired his incompetent arse!! Licht will take care of you guys with his fabulous drafting!! Others have passed your Bucs up again!!! Sorry my man but don’t see things getting any better in 19!! Hope I’m wrong, you guys deserve a little success !! Get back to me when you do and I will eat crow! Until then the team of 2016 is still your best for a while and Tandy led you in interceptions and 2nd or 3rd in tackles and played only 6 games!!! Just keeping it real my friend!! I call a spade a spade!!!!👍👍

  58. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

Hes got speed n ball skills to take picks to the house plus great tackling. He could wind up being a starter. Arains n Bowles definitely decided our secondary was the problem. Let’s see how it plays out this year
