Jason Licht Wasn’t Kidding

April 26th, 2019

“Jason, you sure you know what you’re doing at cornerback?”

Joe detailed this when the Bucs drafted cornerback Sean Bunting with the No. 39 overall pick in Round 2 tonight.

But it bears repeating with a little more depth now that Tampa Bay has selected another “long” corner in near the end of Round 3.

Carlton Davis’ former teammate and current friend Jamel Dean is the pick. Similar to Davis, he’s 6-1, 206 pounds, while Bunting checks in at an even 6 feet.

Back at the NFL Owners Meetings in Phoenix, Bucs GM Jason Licht dropped this unique take on SiriusXM NFL Radio with Friend of Joe host Alex Marvez.

Licht explained that big athletic corners are more important than ever because receivers don’t run true routes any longer.

“So the corner that had all the great change of direction and all that stuff, you know, that’s still a valuable asset. But if you’re long and you can run a little and you’re instinctive and you can tackle, you know, you’re going to be able to cover these guys now,” Licht said. “So that’s just the way the game has kind of morphed.”

Well, now Licht has bought two of them with his first three picks of the 2019 NFL Draft. Joe hopes Vernon Hargreaves doesn’t have a two-year lease. And it appears the Ryan Smith era is over.

they’ve clearly decided all our corners basically suck…

hargreavances is so outta here after this year if he doesn’t practically become a pro bowler

  2. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I really like this corner, I would like it even more if we worked on the trenches in the second.

  3. Arealbucsfan Says:

Another CB!!!???!! Wtf!!!! Could have stayed where we were at and picked Jaylon Ferguson. Licht is a F’NG MORON!!!

  4. adam from ny Says:

wow now a safety…revamping the entire secondary…with no words at all, they’re throwing the back end under the bussssss

  5. Dom>Licht Says:

Will start season with same online and dline as last year both weaknesses…. 4-12 at best.

  6. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

This draft is trash after the first

  7. Dashriprock Says:

I hope all these DBs can play offensive line what a joke

  8. JL Says:

Look at all these Computer GM’s……

  9. adam from ny Says:

wow…after reviewing film, they believe the secondary has been basically rendered useless

  10. Dewey Selmon Says:

Not much difference in 3/4 4/3 secondaires. I invisioned a front 7 change. But to have to revamp the secondary has to say something about the GM’s draft the past 5 years.

  11. BucsScout Says:

Licht straight up fell asleep and his laptop is auto drafting DBs.

  12. MadMax Says:

hmm…kind of crazy draft so far…out of left field fo sho!!!! Guess we’re saying to hell with trenches, lol.

    trenches signed? nobody
    trenches drafted? nobody

um, this is crazy! Love my D. White pick tho!

  13. LJS4th Says:

Ok over the last two drafts we have taken 5 DBs!!! 3 tonight!!! No Olinemen, No RB, No Edge Rushers but we have DBs!!! Superbowl here we come!!!

  14. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Replace the movie usher with the Buc legend in this pic…Licht Weight makes Matt Millen look like Ron Wolf.

  15. adam from ny Says:

    i’m stunned

  16. Arealbucsfan Says:

I hate a “look at all these arm chair gm’s” chump. We all jus suppose to be happy with losing and bad drafts?

  17. rich Says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but in the last 4 years isn’t that:

    1 1st rd pick
    3 2nd rd picks
    1 3rd rd pick
    1 4th rd pick

spent on cornerbacks? It sure seems like we should have 2 or 3 solid starters out of that….hopefully.

  18. Arealbucsfan Says:

I like Devin White pick. That’s about it

  19. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

I thought BA would solve our drafting woes. Instead we took 3 secondary players who were not even the top ranked on the board at the time, at positions we have already drafted extensively last 2 years. We will not have any linemen on either side in 2 years…q

  20. ElBajito43 Says:

If I only knew someone with enough money for the FIRE LICHT billboard to go up tomorrow.

  21. Unimpressed Says:

Lol ok, so no O-Line, no pass rush, no running back, just replacements for our garbage secondary that was assembled by the same guy?????? Oh, and a replacement for Kwon??? How are we BETTER today??

  22. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs literally had no issue rushing the passer last year, they had an issue with their DB’s not being in the same zip code as receivers. Love the idea of blowing up this God awful secondary and rebuilding it.

  23. lowercaseg Says:

looks like gerald mccoy is staying on the team

  24. ElBajito43 Says:

Rod I love the idea of you being smart but it’s just an idea 💡 cuz your really an IDIOT

  25. Dapostman Says:

Lots of speed added to the secondary. You know there are things called coverage sacks. Let’s see how these guys do once training camp starts before the draft gets ripped by the arm chair GM’s.

  26. Givinup! Says:

Worst draft ever! Or at least since last year! Can’t wait to see who we get from sw Louisiana st tomorrow💩! Light is toast 5-11 , Jameis not resigned and arians re-retires! Nice work glazers! Total rebuild coming next year! I’m done with this team!

  27. Dapostman Says:

Bucs must think that Watford, Liedke and Cappa will contribute on the OL this year.

  28. Boogey Says:

OMG can we fire this guy already. He just picked a guy with 3 knee surgeries and the 5th best safety on the board behind Bamas Deonte Thompson and Florida’s Chauncey Gardner Johnson 🤷🏻‍♂️ Where’s the go fund me for the Fire Lich Billboard?

  29. Buccaneerscotty Says:

5 cornerbacks 3 or 4 safeties throw in a kicker great job! How much is a billboard? Anyways? Can we start a fund on this site and have it up by training camp?

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Lol.

Remember way back when I said we had our future OL guys on the team? Cappa and Liedke? They are the future RG and RT. Everyone said I was wrong….

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

All this time we thought it was DB coaching problems…….this sort of proves its the players……
These picks are Bowles picks…..not Licht….for all of you who are screaming at Licht…….scream at him for his previous picks….not these.

  32. Mord Says:

I’d post a confused travolta gif if I could.
    Special teams?

  33. TDTB Says:

Should have drafted DK Metcalf to play rushing OLB.

  34. Mord Says:

These two compare directly to Stewart and Davis, right?

We’re obviously gonna need more corners at every position

  35. Destinjohnny Says:

So we have 67 defensive backs now…..
    #worstgminnfl

  36. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Only thing worse than Licht Weight’s picks is Bonzee declaring victory/ “I told ya so”. Broken Clock Bonzeeeee.

  37. Dashriprock Says:

Gump is playing pocket pool in that picture.

  38. BA FAN Says:

At least Scott Reynolds was with Licht and BA during the drafting. Perhaps Scott will suggest Linemen to them both that he chose if we didn’t get them in the first three rounds and BA can still turn this around. But we will have to keep GMC to play DE and eat the 13 million dollars. He will need to learn how to not only rush from the outside but he will have to play the run as well as PFF and get double digit sacks too, unless we get smart and grab Omenihu in the fourth round and get him to add five pounds of muscle so he can replace GMC and then trade GMC for a decent RG. Then get Byron Cowart in the 5th round to backup Omenihu and PFF, and then 6th Rd. Benny Snell as our third down back, and then TE/FB Trevon Wesco, a clone of Mike Alstott, in the 7th Rd. to pull it off.

  39. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … You’re right; these are Todd Bowles picks. With several potentially plug-and-play DLinemen, OLineman & RBs STILL available at the start of Round 2 & 3, we (1) pick a CB; then (2) trade down for an extra 3rd-Rnd pick; then (3) proceed to draft yet another CB AND a Safety.

So we come away with NO OT Dalton Risner in Rnd 2 (he was there in Rnd 2), NO DE Jaylon Ferguson in Rnd 3 (he was there in Rnd 3 IF we’d stayed at #70). Not to mention that RBs Darrell Henderson, David Montgomery or Damien Harris were ALL there at #70 if we’d stayed there.

So we didn’t build the trenches & we bypassed fixing our running game in favor of adding ANOTHER THREE DBs in the early rounds … for the second straight year. More than anything else Joe, Licht’s quote in your article tells me that he has ZERO idea how to build a TEAM.

Drafting DBs who are “long, run a little, instinctive, can tackle” because “that’s just the way the game has kind of morphed” didn’t just pop up in 2019 Jason … WHY DIDN’T YOU FIGURE THAT OUT LAST YEAR? No, instead he’d rather pay a king’s ransom for an OLine AND a DLine, and put us in salary Cap he11. Makes perfect sense … only in Bucsville.

  40. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

The better we cover receivers, the better our existing pass rush is.
I don’t mind all the defensive backs drafted, but I am still bummed out that we lost the 2 big Offensive Tackles from round two, because teams traded with Oakland, right in front of us.

  41. rrsrq Says:

How you gonna pass the ball when we got are running a 2-2-7, who is gonna be open

  42. jjbucfan Says:

Better question is how are we gonna run the ball and protect JW3? At this point unless Cappa and Benonoch turn into great RTs and we have a true RG on our roster, how will anything change. At this point, I expect JW to be running for his life and having to try to win games on his own because our run game will be non-existent. That means turnovers people…for any QB in this league with those conditions. I still say if we can get the O-Lineman from Elon- I will breathe a little easier. Still need a shifty back that can catch not just speed guy. I think RoJo will be fine this year, gonna surprise a lot of people, IMO

  43. BA FAN Says:

Jjbucsfan you are right about getting a Tackle from Elon; I forgot how well he did at the Senior Bowl. However, I think Licht depends too much on the Senior Bowl and players from small schools instead of getting players from top competitive leagues. Cappa did great at the Senior Bowl but was not NFL Ready last year because our OL Coach couldn’t develop anybody and played favorites even though they were awful. I am looking forward with our new OL Coaches trying out Liedtke who is a Veteran OG at RG. Something that Warhop never did because he saw Liedtke outplayed D. Smith at LT last preseason (no sacks or holding penalties even though he had not played OT before—BA does have him in his chart as D. Smith’s backup now) and Liedtke might have showed up Warhop’s other pet Benenoch if he had ever inserted Liedtke at RG.

  44. BA FAN Says:

By the way Warhop got hired as the OL Coach at Jacksonville with the Jags. Even though they have been drafting very well with help from their Sr. Advisor I expect Warhop to mess up their OL like he did ours!

  45. wideleftandright Says:

Licht to Arians ; I know what to do,lets draft a whole bunch of DBs to finish off the fan base !!

  46. TOM Says:

White pick ok, but I liked Allen & Oliver better. We’ll just have to wait & see. Rds 2 & 3 sucked. But thats Licht for you. Grin & bear it. Its a Buc’s life.
