“You Better Be Ready To Cover”

Jets safety Jamal Adams

Re-posting of Joe’s now-telling exchange with Pro Bowl New York Jets safety Jamal Adams in January in Orlando. The Bucs drafted two press corners and a safety tonight …

Jamal Adams screamed at Joe today after the AFC Pro Bowl practice at Disney World.

Joe is not exaggerating. The question posed to the No. 6 overall pick in 2016 was simple: “What would you tell guys on the Buccaneers defense if you could address them as a group about Coach Bowles and what to expect from him?”

“Be ready to play man, man-to-man, zero, you better be ready to cover,” Adams barked about his recently-fired head coach.

“Because he going to make you cover and he wants guys that can cover and that can blitz and do it all. He not the head coach now. So I can’t anything more. But on defense, just expect a guy that’s going to give it his all and a guy that you definitely want to play for.”

Adams and Bowles were known to be tight, despite having clashing personalities. Adams is a character; Bowles is reserved. Joe watched Adams do a complete spoof interview with a European media outlet earlier in the day. Joe’s pretty sure they bought it, too.

If Bowles wants to play tight man and blitz, the Bucs are going to have to be active in free agency or in the draft, as Joe wrote this morning.

  4. FrankPillow Says:

7 DBs (3 safeties and 4 corners) in the top 3 rounds over the past 3 years. What do we have to show for it. Where’s the investment in the trenches, outside rush and at RB? I love the White pick, but c’mon Jason, the edge rushers and some solid OL prospects were right there for the taking.

  5. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

Welp we’re all in need of something stiff after this..

    A drink that is 🥃

  6. Rayjay1122 Says:

Be glad we didn’t just draft 2 kickers and a punter tonight.

  7. MadMax Says:

    ^ Yes sir! Gentleman Jack!

    Drink uP!

  8. Arian Nation Says:

The Glazers need to lay down the law,”NO MORE DRINKING IN THE WAR ROOM!”

Get better locks for the liquor cabinet, maybe armed guards.

    Holy Sh!t Show Batman!!!

I think a Jaws reference would be appropriate at this point.

“We’re gonna need a bigger bench!”

  9. DayOnePaul Says:

Tomorrow we restock the offensive live.

There just has to be a method to this madness…..or someone on meth…i dont know yet

  12. ATLBucs Says:

Are you guys noticing the speed of the guys we drafted? If nothing else, we are gonna be fast!

    Hargraves
    Smith
    Evans
    Stewart
    Davis
    Whitehead
    Bunting
    Dean
    Edwards

  15. JimmyJack Says:

We got a new Captain and now basically have a new secondary to play behind him.

If they made good picks our defense will be much improved from our last place fininsh.

  16. Arian Nation Says:

Someone tell Licht there’s a crack dealer in Tarpon Springs, he runs a 4.15 40! Cops can’t catch him!

    .
    .
the offensive guys are just as fast
and if the QB has all the time in the world…the DB speed does not matter
I would have been happier with the G’Boyz making picks based on mock draft consensus rankings of players….they should take away Jason Licht’s access pass to the building @ OBP….

  18. catcard202 Says:

The NFL is a passing league… Bowles is going to bring the pressure & put guys on an island. Need the right kind of depth to do that & not get toasted over the top.

I hate to admit it…but Licht just might pull of a miracle & put the pieces of the puzzle together by the end of Day 3…Even if it feels like he’s going about it in odds & frustrating ways!

  19. Dewey Selmon Says:

    Somewhere Mike Smith is laughing.

  20. BigZ Says:

So this validates his other DB selections sux. Irony is I joked with friends we draft 2 DBs tonight. Nice OL we have. Way to protect the franchise and the running game.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

If we can cover this year the draft was a success.

  22. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Well the herd of UDFA OL & DL will be giving Tampa a lot of thought when signing…Jason has cornered that market…brilliant !
Hey! maybe he can trade out of the top of the 4th round and get 2 late 4th round picks

  23. JimmyJack Says:

BigZ it does not validate that.

That gets proven on the field buddy. Not in a chatroom.

COMING RIGHT UP FOR THE BUCS:

WILL GRIER, QB, UNIVERSITY OF WEST VIRGINIA!

    Where you at Bandit???????

    WRONG AGAIN LITTLE BUDDY!!!!!!!!!!

  25. passthebuc Says:

    Grades for draft
Devin White, LB, LSU Grade A- or B+
    Sean Bunting, CB, Grade D
    Jamel Dean, CB Grade B+
    Mike Edwards, S, Grade D
    These are not my grades.
My grade for the draft is F. Not because of selection but for failure to move up and down as necessary.
They may just get the lowest draft grade in the league after it is all said and done.

I am begining to think the Glazers want to move the team to London.

  26. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

    What the actual Fack!!

Seriously what happened in mini camp? Did Cappa prove himself a worthy RG in underwear football?
Is Noah Spence the next coming of Khalil Mack?
All we needed was Dean for outside, we had Davis and VH3/Stewart in the slot. This is just out of hand.
I have been given Licht the benefit of the doubt but I’ve come to my senses. Licht is hot garbage and not worthy of a job as an area scout.
Call us all “internet GMs” or whatever but I guarantee I and many others could’ve done so much better than Licht Weight.

  27. JabooBuc Says:

Where is the idea coming from that we can’t generate a better pass rush with the players we have? If they keep McCoy with Vea and JPP on one side, that’s pretty formidable. They have new coaches and a new scheme. May have CB’s that can cover and LB’s with speed.

I think you have to give the new regime a chance. Team speed has improved tremendously already. My guess is that they add some OL and DL depth with the remaining picks.

If you really want to finish the night on a depressing note…listen to Licht gargling in the toilet in his 7 minute video on the Buc’s website

  29. Joeypoppems Says:

All the DBs drafted bring something to the team that isnt currently on the roster.

Bunting and Deen have elite speed and athleticism. Edwards has the skill set to be a poor man’s Jamaal Adams or Mathieu in Bowles defense. Plus Edwards is another leader type of pick.

We can complain about all the DBs we just picked all we want, but the reality is 1 CB or S wasnt going to fix this secondary. At least they are going all the way in trying to fix it.

  30. Mord Says:

I’m sure when they start their burgeoning army of Davis/Stewart clones at DE, RB, OG and OT next year, they’ll be considered pioneers, like the Rays with the “opener”.

I look forward to seeing which corners and safety they’ll draft tomorrow.

  31. passthebuc Says:

yes, the back end is going to be fast. however, we could have moved back half dozen spaces with our 2nd pick, got a 4th rounder in exchange and still had the same #2 pick. that is just mismanagement.
Maybe we can package the current pack of D backs from the last 2 years and get a 7th rounder. That is how we will pay for this year’s crop cap space.

  32. MadMax Says:

Alright, PERSPECTIVE! NE Pats put more into DB’s than they do pass rush…and look at them…so lets see what happens….of course they have brady and Belicheat too, meh….i need another sip of Jack and im out….oh well, back to the bar….glad im walking, er, staggering lol

  33. Kobe Faker Says:

“You need 8 defensive backs to replace me”

    Chris Conte

  34. passthebuc Says:

Draft is capital. We just do not manage capital well. Licht just paid 10k to take a bus to the airport.

  35. ElBajito43 Says:

Yeah that’s awesome that SucBANDIT is away for the moment I just want you to be safe Bandit. Remember that people still love you somewhere just not here, and if you don’t get help at charter PLZ …… get help somewhere!!!

  36. MadMax Says:

Yeah Joey, I get it. But that reach of the the 2nd pick….. Great player, i got it after getting to know him, but still couldve got him a few picks later (the run on CB’s spooked them) But then to go all in and get more while ignoring other needs? Of course I hope it works out, and yes, it says a lot about our DB situation….But we signed a 2014 1st rounder in Bucannon for crying out loud.

Were our DB’s really that bad? I guess so…

Only so many roster spots tho…adios Hargreaves, Stewart and Davis if these guys turn up and you dont!! What ANOTHER WASTE of draft picks if this is what happens when we also needed other positions addressed!!

  37. Greg Says:

    Kobe, that was funny!

  38. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

JabooBuc- keep GMC? Ok where do we dump 13 M from if we are keeping him?

  39. JabooBuc Says:

Alaskan: seems pretty clear if they were to keep McCoy then they will need to restructure contracts and make some cuts. Not saying they need to keep McCoy but it’s a possibility.

  40. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I’m just curious how, that’s all.

  41. WhatTheBuc Says:

Passthebuc, We could not have moved back and gotten Bunting. We were in the middle of a run on the top corners that started at the end of round 1. 3 more corners were drafted after our pick. Bunting was one of the most coveted corners in the draft whether you know who he is or not. This is not an MJ Stewart here. Do a quick Google search and you’ll see how much information is out there. Everyone wanted this guy and draftniks didn’t realize it until days before the draft.

  42. Tim Says:

You guys understand we lost our number 1 corner, our number 2 corner didn’t play all last year. Our number 4 corner is moving to safety. So these 3 picks were actually great. We added speed and competition at safety. Instead of plugging holes when we had the worst secondary in football you draft a bunch of them and build. Next year we will focus on DLine and Oline. Then we can “fill the holes”. Our secondary needed 3-4-5 players. Y’all wanna go into the season with Smith as our number 2 or 3 corner? He’s a special teams player at best. Stop all he crying now we have Hargraves/Davis/Bunting/Dean. That’s 4 Corners worth while. Then MJ Stewart/Mike Edwards/Jordan Whitehead all compete for safety spot with Evans and we have depth. How can you guys not appreciate that. We’ve been putting DBs on the field that shouldn’t be in the league. Open your eyes people.

  43. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

No DB can cover for 6 seconds, JS.
Jameis can’t throw in 2 seconds.
But hey, we have a great track team.

  44. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

It is eye opening to see that no one seems to want McCoy, even though the entire league knows we are in Cap trouble.

  45. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Bucs get and F- for the draft. Fireeeee Licht!

  46. Arian Nation Says:

I don’t think a single draft pick from last night makes the 53 man roster.

Miguel Grande should be the GM. These are my Friday night picks.

#39 Trayvon Mullen CB Future All Pro went to the Raiders 2 picks later. His finest game was the most important game of his career, the NCAA Championship Game vs Alabama’s Crimson Tide. Six solo tackles, one sack and an interception.
Voted MVP of that game . Most of his career at Clemson opponents refused to throw in his direction. Bunting was a 4th round bust.

#70 Darrell Henderson Future All Pro stolen by the LA Rams while Gump staggered drunkenly around in a state of confusion. Henderson is a first team All American RB from Memphis who scored 27 TD’s last year and accumulated over 2300 yards. By far the best RB in the draft, who is also one of the best kick returners I have ever seen. Remember Desean returning that punt for an exciting TD, only to have it called back for a penalty? That’s DH al day long!

This could have been the best draft in Buc history with 3 All Pros instead it will get Gump fired for outrageous stupidity. Ever see the attendance figures for track meets? Sometimes both parents show up and the attendance tops 150.
