Bucs Shopping GMC “Hard”

April 3rd, 2019

Trade bait?

More and more it appears Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has played his last snap for the Bucs.

He was a no-show at voluntary Bucs conditioning sessions this week as the team gathered for the first time on Monday under the Bucco Bruce Arians regime.

For a guy who is all about team, it seemed a tad odd that GMC was not there. We know why now.

This offseason, both Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and Arians have refused publicly to say GMC will be on their roster this fall. It is obvious the Bucs are trying to get GMC to renegotiate his $13 million a year salary.

Apparently, they are hitting a wall.

Per former NFL suit Michael Lombardi, who still has his tentacles within NFL circles, he hears the Bucs are trying to trade GMC “hard.” But no team wants anything to do with his salary.

Why is Joe fairly certain we have seen the last of GMC? Well, is he a fit for defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and his style? One would hope a guy making $13 million either would be a perfect fit or that Bowles would build a defense around him.

It is starting to smell as if the Bucs are not willing to build a defense around GMC. And that may spell the end of GMC’s days in Tampa Bay.

Bye GMC thanks for the wretched lifeless defense with zero leadership and accountability

Good luck finding a winner willing to pay you half of what Licht would’ve

  2. THETRUTH Says:

Suh got paid more than McCoy after a 4 sack season ,

Joe : you think Suh performance actually hurts McCoy grade value , I think McCoy is better all around player than suh

  3. ben Says:

Buc fans appreciate you for being so good in the community and the excellent player on the team. Maybe next time you can finally play for a winner!!

  4. THETRUTH Says:

Should cut him to 8million a year (if not release him )and Cut Gholson immediately he has been being paid to do nothing for a few years now. That will give you about 9mill in cap space

  5. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Suh is still a free agent…

  6. sunshine Says:

Thanks for being a great player and hope you land with a winner!!

  7. Bird Says:

In a trade , can you offer to pay a portion of salary ?

For example – Here is GMC for a 4th round pick and we will pay 5 mil of salary and new team pays 8?
I know a team is just waiting for him to be released so new team can pay around 8 mil. Rams or patriots ? Suh replacement for a lot less

  8. Lubby Smith Says:

    Who cares about his play?

Surely some team will pay him $13 million for being a “good guy” and his “work in the community.”

Oh wait, that’s only the loser Bucs.

  9. Polkfan Says:

With this news Ed Oliver is the pick. Disruptive Dt with Aaron Donald/John Randle potential. I’m happy.

  10. Tbbucs3 Says:

About 4 years too late Licht.

These reports are embarrassing for Jason Licht as he actually thinks that another NFL GM is willing to pick up that contract…..the only GM dumb enough to do that is Jason Licht who has done that the past 5 years.

  11. Joe Says:

you think Suh performance actually hurts McCoy grade value ,

Not sure. Apparently GMC has really slipped if the Bucs cannot find a suitor.

  12. The Buc Realist Says:

Tbbucs3 hit the nail on the head!!!!!!!! Why does the gm licht weight have the answers years to late????????? There was even a pretty good offer last year for Gmc!!!!!!!! But they decided to build around and dictate the scheme around gmc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Should cut him to 8million a year… “The

    Completely unrealistic.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I would imagine the barriers being face are length of contract and amount of pay cut.

Those suggesting he restructure to $8,000,000 per year are suggesting his pay be cut nearly in half. No player will agree to that.

    Ever.

The only restructure we’ve seen was only a million saved.

A more realistic number is $10-11 million per year.

And he won’t be traded during the draft. It must be fun to fantasize about such a thing, but Jason Licht has NEVER traded an actual player during a draft.

More likely scenario: Bruce and Jason are purposefully delaying talks until after the draft. If they get a GMC replacement, they’ll have all the power.

And if they don’t, eating his contract one more year is not a big deal. It will give them the freedom that restructuring takes away.

  16. Bucnjim Says:

Can’t change what’s on tape. He’s been a check casher for more than two years now and other teams know it. Paying him that money last year was a disaster since everyone outside of the organization called it. Makes them look like they don’t know WTF they are doing when fans can say told you so!

  17. tmaxcon Says:

“What Hurts gmc value is a huge, deep draft of D-line talent!!!!!!!!!! And the gm licht weight should have seen that last year, and traded gmc when they had value!!!!”

This is something we both suggest last year, yet fans scoffed at us.

  19. SCBucsFan Says:

When you read thru this forum, starting with the leaders, its clear GMC is not appreciated here. You know, because we have so many 6 pro bowl players. I hope he goes somewhere where he is appreciated. Because on this forum the fans love, ummm, no one. Except for the strange love from the top of Grimes and his wife.

  20. K2 Says:

McCoy was a solid player. I agree around 8 million would be fair. However, I think both parties have moved on. Given the talent in this years draft…Bucs need to move forward. If McCoy wants to play, several teams would pay 7 or 8 million to have him. He is not going to get 13…so holding out on the Bucs is silly if he wants to play.

  21. Anonymous Says:

Knowing the Bucs, they’ll get nothing for him, cut him, he’ll sign with a good team for half the money, and have his best season ever.

  22. Doctor Stroud Says:

The Bucs probably asked him to take a pay cut, and the situation is escalating fast. If Team Glazer had their way, they would prefer to extend GMC’s contract, a clear sign that he would be on his way out. Team Glazer must suffer from some kind of collective guilt when they have to fire coaches, GMs, and players. Paying those people not to coach, manage, and play might be a way to make them feel better about themselves. Licht has a windfall coming his way.

Nice try, One-Trick-Dimwit, but timing is everything.

I wanted McCoy traded last year, when he had value…but not because of the same racist reasons you want him gone.

Deciding when the time is right to trade a player is important. For example…trading Lavante David right now would be smart. He’s productive. Waiting until he has a down year is not smart.

I say this not because I expect you to grasp it, but because others will. You will remain one-dimensional as usual.

  25. tmaxcon Says:

Pro bowls are meaningless people…. nothing more than a popularity contest completely unrelated to on field play…

  26. Negative Nancy Says:

Winston and McCoy to Seattle in exchange for Russell Wilson and then pay him what he wants.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I bet if GMC gets cut, he’ll get more than $15 million from another team.

  28. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    Actually, this is great news!

If “Dunce Cap” Licht was still in charge, we would not be shopping GetMyCash, because, you know, “Dunce Cap” is smarter than everyone else.

It’s clear BA has final say over this roster now.

It’s a shame “Dunce Cap” screwed the cap and BA has to fix it.

  29. tmaxcon Says:

All you people crying about good in community GARBAGE….staged public relations propaganda visits with camera crews is a pr stunt not helping community… cancer93 is a fraud and nuthuggers that support the fool are equally as foolish.

  30. tmaxcon Says:

    Bonzi

15 million lol do you try hard to be so stupid or does it just come natural…. wake up fool stop living in denial

  31. Pickgrin Says:

If the Bucs decide to just let GMC go because they need the cap space and there are no trade offers – my guess is that Gerald’s value on the free market will be about $7-8M.

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t believe (like in MLB) a team is permitted to absorb part of a player’s salary…..the new team must pay it…….since there are no guarantees the new team is not stuck with the $13 million and could renegotiate a salary with GMC…..but GMC doesn’t have to accept.

The problem, as it was with Djax, is one of timing……Licht has waited to long to make a move….holding out hope for a playoff appearance last year…..now he is too old vs. his salary.

Also, GMC would have to be given at least a two year salary guarantee to take a cut and Bucs probably don’t want to do that.

So, goodbye GMC and we may get nothing but the $13 cap space in return….but that may be good enough at this point…..Sorry for all concerned.

  33. Bucnjim Says:

someone will cough up a 6th or 7th rounder after the draft if he’s willing to renegotiate with that team. Right now no one will give him the time of day. The only chance he has is a team one DT short to make a Super Bowl run.

  34. Bruce Blahak Says:

Bucs are obviously totally going to 34 defense with talk of JPP playing over a guard, Nassib as OLB and bulking up Gholston. The soft ice cream man doesn’t fit anywhere. Strictly a one gap under tackle…
His disappearance and departure is a welcome sight for the franchise. Loser mentality reduction…

  35. miken Says:

noway you get more than a 4th… realisticly a 6 or you have to cut.

  36. SCBucsFan Says:

If I’m GMC I don’t renegotiate; he will get more than 8M on the open market.

  37. wausa Says:

GMC is a good player, but if the Bucs ever thought they could trade him with a $13MM per year salary they were living in a dream world.
If his salary was $7MM per year then I think they would have a number of teams that would want him.

I would guess his personal pride will get in the way of him restructuring to stay in Tampa.

  38. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

and in the name of “truth” and “transparency”, word on the street, was that last year, a potential of a trade was just beginning to be explored, when gmc and his agent freaked out, and ran it up the flag pole!!!!!!! The higher ups panicked because of the potential fall out of trading the ” fan favorite” and ” great in the community” !!!!!!!!!!!! which lead to the duct taping a defunct defense that was only supposed to be ran for 1 year of 2016 NOT THREE YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!! But gmc got his way, and would pout if he was not used as the defacto 3 technique!!!!!!!!!!!

and that hurts his value as well!!!!!! That is well known throughout the league, that if you ask gmc to do anything but play him as a penetrating, disrupting, three technique, that you will get eye rolls- back handed grumbling and other disruptive complaints in the locker room!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer is yes. I read earlier this year that the Dolphins agreed to pay part of RT’s salary in a trade to the Titans. Now the difference is McCoy does not have any guaranteed money. Not really sure if that’s relevant though. If a team trades for McCoy they can renogiate just like the Titans did.

Schefter has added Miami agreed to pay $5 million of the guaranteed $7 million from the Titans as a signing bonus.

  43. TampaBay55 Says:

  45. straightcashhomey Says:

Just like DJax but MUCH worse due to the residual playing value that GMC has to other teams, THIS IS yet another example of poorly, rather pitifully-timed attempts at trading a player that should have been dealt LAST YEAR during the season, to acquire whatever reasonable value we could obtain for GMC in return!! When JPP/Nassib/VV were supporting the line just fine by themselves.

But doofus Licht got cute AGAIN, just like he did with DJax.

It is so infuriating, how much better anyone qualified could be performing in his place in roster management, pushback on salary cap stunt management, and scouting personnel changes.

    EFFING shame.

  49. Todd Says:

Trade up to get SF’s #2 pick, a 4th rounder in 2020 plus GMC, subsidizing $4MM of his salary. Thus, we secure the #1 defensive pick in 2019. And free up all the cap space necessary to pay for our 2019 draft picks.

  50. gotbbucs Says:

Four coaching regimes have tried to build a defense around this guy, all have failed, been fired, and cant sniff another head coaching gig. He wont play a 5-technique, so get rid of him. He has no scheme flexibility.

How anybody still thinks this guy will suit up for this team this year is beyond me. Arians and Bowles dont strike me as idiots. They arent going to allow this guy to gobble up another massive paycheck from their team to watch him disappear when the season is on the line.

At the very least licht should have traded him and djax last season when they would have gotten something for them…..again why is licht still the GM?

  56. Joeypoppems Says:

“Do I feel like I could be more effective in a different way? Yes. But I’m a team guy. It’s not about Gerald. So whatever coach calls is what I’m going to run.’’

You are/were a good soldier for a failed cause.

  65. Defense Rules Says:

@TheTruth … “Should cut him to 8million a year (if not release him )”. A contract is a contract, and the Bucs can’t unilaterally cut GMC from $13 mil to $8 mil. They can however release him outright & renegotiate a NEW contract with him if both parties are willing to do that. I don’t blame GMC for sticking to his guns right now; let’s see who blinks first.

Problem that no one seems to be addressing is that if they release GMC, Bucs are left with Vea & Allen as our DTs. Whoopee. What we will have done is created YET ANOTHER STARTING HOLE that we’d either have to pay $$$ to sign a veteran for OR use a precious high draft pick to select a rookie DT. Bucs already have too many STARTING HOLES & creating another really screws us. For those willing to start the season with Benenoch or Cappa at RG, RoJo or Ellington as our second RB, Minter as our MLB and VHIII as our starting outside CB, I’d say ‘Good luck, and welcome to yet another 5-11 season’ … at best.

Trading GMC is NOT simply about the acquiring team just taking his current contract, yes or no….it’s far more sophisticated than that in their options to make GMC happy with new guaranteed $$$, in exchange for tearing up the current deal to thus complete the trade.

McCoy making 15 million on another team 🤣🤣🤣. Clueless

  80. 813bucboi Says:

    lol….

@realist wanted 2 more years of 5win seasons, lack of development and incompetent coaching….lol…..

realist, ask youself, if smitty was so good or got a raw deal dealing with cry baby GMC, why didnt he get a sniff at another NFL job?…..DC, LB coach, run game coordinator something…..because they know smitty’s scheme is updated and passive…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  81. Bucsfanman Says:

Ya’ll need to stop throwing that BS around like you know or knew something. I will simply say this, and it’s not to say it didn’t happen but, GMC or any other player should not be dictating to the coach, to the GM, and to the owners what should or shouldn’t be done personnel-wise. If it is or was, that is an organizational failure of epic proportions.
Koetter was not a good HC. He probably didn’t have the spine to tell Jason Licht what to do, and when. So, maybe we missed out on trading GMC. Maybe not.
The bottom line is that this organization should have been preparing to replace him all along. It’s no secret that Father Time is undefeated. We can debate his worth as a player all day long, but facts are facts.
His tenure will forever be tied to a history of losing. I for one, cannot put the blame squarely on the shoulders of ONE player. That’s not how team sports work.
IMO, McCoy will go down as one of the better, more consistent players that we’ve had on defense over the span of his career. His memory, like that of these losing years, will hopefully be long forgotten behind one of the biggest franchise turnarounds in the history of the NFL!

    16-DASH-0!!!! Say it with me…..

  82. The Buc Realist Says:

    @813broccoli

The defense was trash!!!!!!! But Smitty had a much harder schedule, more injuries to deal with!!!!!!! And loser lovie still was a full point higher in points allowed, even though in most blowouts the other teams were running out the clock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The defense the last 2 years was trash!!!!! but was even worse in 2014-15!!!!!!!! and what is worst!!!! Not only was loser lovie an incompetent coach, but was even a more bumbling gm who had the “juice” at the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! even worse than Coach Smitty not fixing loser lovies mess, was that they never moved on from incompetents lovie mess and just did a horrible patch job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So to simply this so you understand, read it slowly three times!!!!! Coach Smitty defense Trash, incompetent loser lovie, worst defense in buc history !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  83. tmaxcon Says:

    Bucsfanman

I am worried about you brother…… say it with me 16-0 in same sentence with bucs = BAKER ACT

  84. CalBucsFan Says:

Hey Joes, were there any other players not attending the voluntary conditioning sessions, or only McCoy?

  85. GhostofSchiano Says:

I was a big fan of McCoy, until I read so many, many negative comments here in recent years. So I focused more attention on #93. I finally saw what so many here have said all along. Good riddance Cancer93.

  86. Snook Says:

He’s not worth $13M. The rest of the NFL agrees. This is news?

Real Bucs fans have been screaming this for YEARS now.

Maybe someday Joe will wake up. It reminds me of his Manziel blindness a few years back.

  87. Jim Says:

The real issue is the Bucs changing coaches every three years. The players then get recycled and there is no continuity

  88. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

Who does GetMyCash think he is?
Why does he think he is owed something?

He’s not showing up because his feelings are hurt?

Hey, the Bucs cut Brooks without warning or negotiating.

Mr. GMC…you are NO BROOKS, so quit acting like you’re some super player.
    News flash…You’re NOT!

  89. 813bucboi Says:

    @realist

smitty had more talent than lovie…..simple as that….

smitty had 3years to do what he wanted to do with the defense and couldnt “fix” anything…..

smitty had the worse defense in bucs and nfl history 2years in a row….you cant defend that…..

if lovie was so trash and incompetent, why is he a college HC that just received an extension while smitty is writing in his diary…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  90. DB55 Says:

Hey but Tmax and I are just trolls!

How many morons said we could get a 2nd or 3rd round pick for McIceCream?

We tried to tell you we couldn’t get a bologna sandwich but wtfdwk!!!

  91. Blind Melon Says:

I think he’s gone – and something happens at draft day.

  92. Anonymous Says:

You can’t build a defense around the most talented player in football at any position if he isn’t a leader and it’s twice as bad if the player relishes being a leader ( check) . It Doesn’t work and I’ve been saying it before T max celebrated his birthday in 2015 .

Shame on the Team Management but I was confident that he wouldn’t pass the Arians test , to much film and def performance history . He needs to go to philly or the Rams and would do so for prob 8 mil . He would play much better and be a force just fitting in and not being / trying so hard to be the face!!! The man can play but his brain gets in the way and Licht just isn’t a good negotiator, McKay would have had him gone and Happy at 8 to 10 mil for a late second . The guy can bring way way Way more to a contender than the Bucs and given the right middle man McCoy would jump at the opportunity!!!

  93. tmaxcon Says:

    DB55

Hope you and family are well… visionaries and forward thinkers that judge on results not feelings are always falsely labeled unti the truth is realized

  94. DB55 Says:

    Tmax

It don’t take a genius to see he’s a bum. Which says a lot about the fan base but wtfdik.

Sad part is that the kid could dominate if he had a heart the size of the grinch but he doesn’t. He don’t have NO HEART!!!!

  95. Bucsfanman Says:

DB55- After seeing what most would say were better players being traded for 4th, 5th, and 6th rounders, it really hit home.
Consider that we traded a #3 for JPP. Far better talent.
Our problem now is that in addition to not garnering anything near a 2nd or 3rd, what team in their right mind would take on his salary?! Even for a 5th or 6th round pick!

Troll? You’re no troll bro’. We disagree sometimes but you have good takes. Tmax on the other hand…..

  96. Bucsfanman Says:

tmax- Hey man, my wife already thinks I’m crazy! My TV room/man-cave is padded for this reason!
Besides, during football season, those “time outs” are my sober times!

  97. Snook Says:

Here’s how the trade phone calls go:

Licht: “Hey – are you interested in trading for Gerald McCoy?”
GM: “Maybe. What’s his salary this coming season?”
    Licht: “Thirteen million.”
    GM: “No, seriously.”
    Licht: “Thirteen million.”
    GM: “Aaaaahahahahahahahahaha!!!”
    *GM hangs up*
    Licht: “Hello?”

  98. Snook Says:

Its amazing to me that people still make excuses for McCoy.

Too many coaches? Sorry, but he’s been a big part of the problem.
Not enough talent around him? JPP arrives and now its “its too late”

So sad. He’ll be gone in 2019 and this franchise will march on.

Like someone else said here, McCoy could be a beast but he’s got no heart. He’s just one of those guys that plays for money, fame, anything else other than the love of the game. Great guy. Nice guy. Just not a winner.

  99. Jean Lafitte Says:

GMC’s play does not match his pay so you would think he’d be willing to restructure for less before being dumped because of his salary. I don’t see his logic in his posturing. If he gets released, he will only see offers for less anyway, and probably on a one year deal. Maybe even far less than a more than generous restructured deal with the Bucs. On the surfaces it just gives the appearance of greed, and not what’s good for the team. All aging players are asked to restructure at some point.

  100. Joe Says:

Like someone else said here, McCoy could be a beast but he’s got no heart. He’s just one of those guys that plays for money, fame, anything else other than the love of the game.

Joe hasn’t seen too many guys who can barely put their pants on after a game because they are so beat up just playing for a paycheck. Joe *has* seen guys just play for paychecks. Myron Lewis springs to mind. Dude stubs a toe in the bathtub and he’s in a boot for two months.

  101. Eric y Says:

Buc fans are blind … no one wants to pay McCoy 13 million .., hes not even worth 8 million … hes overrated

  102. Bobby M. Says:

McCoy’s strategy is simple….if he has to take less, he’s at least getting the option to pick where he plays. He may play for the vet minimum if it’s with Tom Brady or Drew Brees where he can run deep in the playoffs a few years. But to stay here…can’t blame him to demand $13 million. The organization is terrible, nobody is coming here on a discount.

  103. T REX Says:

He’ll get cut and go play for a winner. Why stay here and be disrespected? This is loserville. Go Bolts!

  104. DB55 Says:

Dude stubs a toe in the bathtub and he’s in a boot for two months.
    ————
Let’s not forget that McIceCream stubbed his pinky and was on the sidelines for a month. In all my years I’ve never seen a DT/DE or even LB miss games bc of an injured hand.

  105. Mike Johnson Says:

If i were GMC, I would NOT renegoiate my contract. Screw’em GMC! Make your paper my man. He can easily get 8 to 10 mil on the open market. Loyalty my A..!!!!!

  106. DBS Says:

It’s what happens when a team tries to kick the can down the road. maybe he does not see why he should pay for their failures. They made the deal. F them. Hope he goes to a winner because just about any team can get to a Super Bowl before this one.

  107. Jean Lafitte Says:

good grief .. In my world 8 – 10 million is a helluva lot less than 13 million. Give us that deal or move on. We’ve been losing with you and we can lose without you as well.

  108. Wright Says:

“I bet if GMC gets cut, he’ll get more than $15 million from another team.”

World class thinking there. That quote right there is how you can pretty much decide everything else that comes out of your mouth ain’t worth anything.

If that quote were true, teams would be lining up to have McCoy. Why? Because they can have him now for 13 million….

That is why you are typing on your keyboard, and not running an NFL franchise.

  109. Eric y Says:

Teams will not pay 13 million … they will wait for the Bucs to cut him which I said inevitable… and then he will be signed but not for anything close to 8 million… he’s been a average DT … buc fans swear he’s all that… it would be a disgrace to put him beside names like lynch barber Sapp and the rest in the ring of honor

  110. Anonymous Says:

Oh let’s see mike , play for my choice of champion potential teams for 7 or 8 mil or hold out and get cut and maybe try and get 10 and still hv to take 8 and your choice of teams may lessen after the draft .

I would like my position hear to renegotiate to a team of my liking prior to the draft . Gerald has made allot of Dollars and he ain’t Sapp in that regard .

    —————-
Exactly how I feel about Jameis. Weird huh?!

  112. Bucsace Says:

He should have been unloaded long before this….JPP showed the fans what a true impact player looks like….and totally exposed GMC for the pedestrian talent he is….there aren’t many other NFL franchises where a player of this caliber could have gotten so rich

  113. Howard Cosell Says:

I scroll though this thread just to read all of tmax’s comments Lol
Apparently he was somewhat right all along.
Speaks volumes that the first qualified HC the glazer brats ever hired wants to restructure or trade GMC yesterday

Ding dong the witch is … almost dead?

It’s also interesting that he apparently refuses to restructure…..
    Nice guy???
I think not….petulant brat…maybe that’s why the glazers relate to him so well?

  114. Buc believer Says:

When the trash in the can starts to stink you throw it out. BUH BYE Batman….

  115. jmarkbuc Says:

Once again the Bucs have gotten themselves into a position where no one will trade for a guy that could very well be cut. How many times before the front office learns to quit shootig themselves in the foot?

I’d say there is a good possibility that Gmac just retires..he has no love for the game, only having fun and making money.
