Jameis Clarifies Comments

February 15th, 2019

Responds.

Joe wishes more Bucs players would be this classy and upfront.

Yesterday, Joe brought word about America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, answering a question from Tampa-native and nine-year NFL veteran Leger Douzable at the World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta during Super Bowl Week where Jameis suggested he went rogue and decided to just be his best self — and not try to be a quarterback he may not be — in his quest to regain his starting job back with the Bucs.

The money quote is below.

“I had to look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘Hey Jameis, what do you have to do?’ And that was simply, ‘Get back to playing Jameis Winston football. Be yourself. Have that swag. Don’t try to be something that a coach is trying to get you to be.’ You know, you gotta go and be you.”

Joe took that as Jameis knowing what kind of a quarterback he is and shunning advice from coaches who may have been trying to change his game or his style.

Of course, a number of Joe’s readers took offense to this and thought Joe was trying to invent things or mock Jameis. Nonsense! Joe wasn’t trying to belittle anyone.

In a classy move, Jameis yesterday afternoon reached out to Joe on Twitter and offered a clarification into what he meant by his words. Jameis wanted to make it perfectly clear he had no intention whatsoever in being subordinate in any way to his coaches.

So there you have it. And Joe really appreciates Jameis making sure Joe and all Bucs fans know of his selfless intentions. Anyone who knows Jameis knows he wants to win terribly. If only Joe could take photos in the locker room after losses to just show fans how emotionally torn up Jameis gets after a loss.

One more wasted year and we can finally move on.

Too much drama and a divided fan base…for what?

A losing record and no playoffs. How many times has this idiot had to walk back comments?

I knew your faux outrage was too good to be true.

  2. Tampabucfan88 Says:

Stfu Rex damn stop being negative

  3. ATLBucs Says:

I still say he shouldn’t have listened to the coaches. The coaches are supposed to coach a young QB up. The only improvement Jameis has made has been on his own.
I think he will learn a lot from this next batch of coaches and so will our other talented players.

  4. BrianBucs Says:

Looks like Winston heard from the Bucs PR department or his agent. Had to walk back some immature, selfish comments that dont go with all of the new spin.
The original comments were more accurate and telling.

  5. Joe Says:

Looks like Winston heard from the Bucs PR department or his agent.

Neither of the Joe’s heard from the Bucs — and trust Joe, they have the cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

  6. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

It’s hard for these guys to do so many interviews and have their words under a microscope. I don’t think Jameis puts a lot of effort in preparing what to say, I think he is just authentic and goes in with a couple bullet point statements.

He has a propensity to misspeak at times, I think of the time when he was at the school volunteering him time to the youth and said that girls should be soft and bla bla and it got all blown up.

It’s obvious Jameis didn’t feel like his coach had his back and probably at times he questioned the support of the front office and ownership when they took his picture down and allowed him to be benched for way too long.

I think for his coach to come in and say you are the man to him is immensely impactful on his psyche.

Cmon guys . You already drank the entire store full of cool laid and are looking for more.

This makes it look even worse.
No question which joe this is. Dude. I mean wow.

Also , I wonder which poster name Jameis pretends to be or his pr person /family members pretend to be. I have good idea

  10. 1sparkybuc Says:

It must be tough rooting for the team to win and the QB to fail. I prefer to root for both to win.

  11. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Joe wishes more Bucs players would be this classy and upfront.” Hmmm, ‘upfront’? More than likely, and obviously great fodder for the media. ‘Classy’? In what universe is it a classy thing to do for a franchise QB to tell a national audience that he tuned his coaches out last year? The very fact that Jameis followed up this mess with a tweet that said “I have the up most respect and very grateful for ALL my coaches” … with ‘ALL’ capitalized … tells me that Jameis realizes (or more-than-likely was told) that he screwed up by saying what he said. It’s called what? ‘Walking it back’?

And Joe, the ‘selfless intentions’ thingie in the last para was hardly how I’d describe Jameis, or probably most NFL players for that matter. They’re not warriors; they’re entertainers. This is the career that they’ve been blessed to be able to pursue, and they’re ACCOUNTABLE for everything they do AND everything they say. Through his actions AND through his words, Jameis seems to have this propensity for starting firestorms in the media. Youthful indiscretion may have worked as an excuse when he was an NFL newbie at 20-years-old. He’s 25 now and if he expects to be viewed as THE team leader, he’s gotta stop starting fires.

  12. Bruce Blahak Says:

How many apologies/corrections do we have to endure? See the trend? He’s a con man now. Putting a spin on everything. Go Bucs in 2020! No McCoy, No Jameis, No drama(maybe)…

  13. Loyaltotheend Says:

    He’s use to apologizing

Apologizes for every turnover, every loss, every lawsuit he settles, every fumble and for every immature comment

Just limit his media appearances until he grows up

  14. Bob in Valrico Says:

What wasn’t clarified was Jameis’s unwillingness to be what the coaches wanted him to be as he put it. Even the hint that Jameis has not fully cooperated with his coaches is cause for concern, IMO. Protecting the football is an issue that has plagued
Jameis and caused him to be benched. Hope Arians gets the cooperation he needs from Jameis to put a winning football team on the field.

  15. Marlow Says:

What… JW is having to clarify himself again… let’s resign him. SMH!

  16. Jrbigd0g Says:

What makes me laugh is the fact that all the so called “bucs” fans continue to put this man down. He is a kid and needs to learn from his mistakes plain and simple. Granted it’s taking him longer than most but he will get it. My question is if we finish with a winning record would all the haters be hating? NO. Route for our team…..we’re about to see some great football!!! GO BUCS

  17. Anonymous Says:

So what happens when the “franchise” decides he does not want to be told what to do by the new coaches at one buc place? Will he just do “his” thing again? Will we again hear how these coaches have not “coached up” Jamise they can’t coach. When after the fact we find out Jamise Winston chose not to listen to the coaching he is given. Will it again be the coaching staff not helping the most NFL ready QB in this generation to blossom? Do we all agree that a player who does not listen to his coaches instruction is not a team player? One who sounds very much like a player who needs to be cut before they poison the locker room.
Yeah I know he wont do that to Coach Arians. He respects Coach Arians. Right up until when he looks in the mirror and as that appiffany that he is like Frank Sinatra and is going to do it his way. Good luck this season Jameis. You too coach Arians. Hope we do not read about how poor you and your coaching staff are in building up the “franchise “.

    Go Bucs!

  18. AlteredEgo Says:

    Dwayne Haskins

  19. gotbbucs Says:

    Just. Stop. Talking.

How many more times does this guy need to put his foot in his mouth?

  20. Ndog Says:

You people are all just so clueless, let’s look at facts, before when he was doing what he was told by the coaches he stuggled when he came back and focused on what he believed he needed to improve on he was outstanding. So which one do you as a Bucs fan prefer, him playing scared and too cautious thus making mistakes by trying to be perfect or a guy who plays under control yet throws 11 TDs vs 3 picks? It really isn’t that hard but twist the words and read into things that aren’t really there cause you are the same people that have been doing that since ESPN told you how to feel 6 years ago.

  21. Bobby M. Says:

Back to the other side of his mouth…..No different when he said he didn’t do anything in the Uber car, but then said he was working on avoiding alcohol and settled quickly out of court. If i’m the Bucs, i’m drafting a QB and sending a message that fun and games are over.

  22. Ndog Says:

Lastly you people keep saying stop. Stop what being honest, stating facts, let’s be real did you not watch his coaches press conferences where he would defend everyone on the team BUT the QB? My favorite is well LT’s get judged by one bad play but did you see the rest he was awesome, then in the next breath he says, Jameis played great but that one played just killed us, we can’t have that. Or DJAX is open we just have to hit him. But completely ignores that half ass effort, no blocking and crying on the sideline after every play that’s ok right?

The answer is clear but that’s ok still rip him cause you seem smart. Oh that’s right you don’t have a choice cause the media told you too.

So take all that and you just got benched doing it the coaches way, you know the guy throws only you under the bus for everything. Now you come back what are you going to do listen to the guy that got you there and clearly doesn’t like you or take matters into your own hands?

  23. scbucsfan Says:

Nothing says classy like grabbing a woman by the crotch.

  24. Bruce Blahak Says:

I/we have lived through 2 horrible eras of Bucs football > the 85-95 crap show and post Gruden disaster. I’m not into trying a one year fix, worried about the long term team. So, to change the culture and start anew, the cash grabbers, crotch grabbers and whiny excuse makers need to find a new address. Fire sale and start with a horde of draft picks and build a new base. That’s the only way to fix the culture. No Winston, No McCoy, No Djax or anyone with similar traits to these franchise killers!

  25. Jim Says:

Ignoring coaches when you have a losing record is not a good combination. Draft a QB in the 3rd round, please…

  26. TexBuc Says:

    In Bruce I trust

  27. Defense Rules Says:

Ndog … I think the vast majority of JBFers want Jameis to succeed as much as you seem to, for one simple reason: if your QB isn’t ‘successful’ your TEAM won’t be ‘successful’. Don’t know about you, but I’m not a Bucs’ fan because of Jameis Winston, or any other single player on this team. I’m a fan of THE TEAM and I think that’s how most fans would categorize themselves.

I personally love Coach Arians’ philosophy of holding every player ACCOUNTABLE, but it’s not unique to football by any means. I just wish folks would stop with the EXCUSES, not just for Jameis but for other players as well. It’s bizarre that in our present-day culture folks don’t think twice about holding police & teachers making peanuts for pay (just as an example) ACCOUNTABLE for their actions & performance on the job … no excuses … and yet those same folks don’t seem to apply those same high standards to ‘entertainers’ like sports figures and Hollywood actors/actresses making mega-millions for their job performance.

Like I said earlier, Jameis is “25 now and if he expects to be viewed as THE team leader, he’s gotta stop starting fires”. NO EXCUSES.

  28. Pickgrin Says:

Damn – It never ceases to amaze me – how many of you that comment on JBF just don’t like this young man.

Best QB this franchise has ever had – just turned 25 – hasn’t come close to his ceiling – yet so many would rather run him out of town and pay Case Keenum or Nick Foles $20M I guess…

    Keep the faith Jaboo!

Can’t wait till the Bucs start winning so all these haters can just magically vanish…

  29. OneBuc55 Says:

Wow, someone put Dawayne Haskins name on this post…SMH

There isn’t 1 QB in this draft or Free Agency that’s better than Jameis…Even Nick Foles played like dodo once he left Philly…Bucs fans are true QB killers…

  30. zzbuc Says:

Joe, what you say classy I say impolite…….Why in the hell you have to say that about your coaches??? That is very immature and ungrateful…. Coaches weren’t responsable of many of your decisions in an off the field…….Even more, coach Koetter was tired explaining the media about the importance of being patience with your poor decisions and your turnovers…Shame on Jameis, and with all due respect very innacurate analysis. Even more if you take Jameis best games were AFTER he was benched, he played pretty solid…..so do Jameis has to be benched in order to play good ball? Was Koetter decision better for Jameis? Well I think so!!!!! So stop blaming other for your own disgrace, and be more greatful for those who protected you!!!!

  31. From76 Says:

Draft a QB. If he looks good go with him from the first preseason game. Winston is a playground QB and will not progress to a consistent passer.

He can talk, or not talk, clarify his statements, But most of the “real” fans don’t real trust his words anymore!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully a black coach (Jameis said he was happy to have one) will tell him to shut up and just hike the football, so he can relate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The great part of the draft this year will be, once that it is done, Bucs fans will get to see the top QB prospects are for the 2020 draft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 season will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. BucsFIRE Says:

    Bruce,

It just gets old man. We know you hate Jameis. We get it.
Think just maybe you can wait and see how he does with a new regime?

  43. J.T. Cross Says:

Jameis has said something stupid and had to walk back his comments numerous times. Pretty common among “celebs” and liars in general. And given his track record of slamming others who turned out to be right (Uber driver as the biggest example) and his deception from his team, his coaches, ownership, fans, and could very well even be his fiancee…he just realized what he said made himself look foolish…yet again. Nothing more. Jameis talks about something being on him all the time, but he’s yet to own up to anything. But he is a good BS artist…plenty of media hacks trying to get exclusives (or claiming them–the real media laughs at him) when they are nobodies. Given what we’ve seen out of his full body of work and behavior, Winston doesn’t respect anyone but his own self, and it’s pretty clear all his BS about caring about all the above is proven as BS given his actions. His words mean nothing. I like this: “So there you have it. And Joe really appreciates Jameis making sure Joe and all Bucs fans know of his selfless intentions.” Can’t say one can claim “all Bucs know anything” by this. I’m not fooled. But OMG, thanks for the laugh on a Friday morning.

  47. J.T. Cross Says:

Anyone calling this guy a kid, classy, honest, or the best anything are just fooling themselves. Winston does what any BS artist does…looks for an outlet that will listen to his BS and hope they disseminate it. Yup, someone will buy it. America’s great…everyone gets to say what’s on their mind.

  48. SOEbuc Says:

Jameis finally got tired of the coaching BS and started using his own swag that won him a national championship and heisman week 6. With Bowels behind the wheel on defense, very excited to see 2019 offense. You fake fan, non believer bandwagon haters need to take that sh!t somewhere else because we haven’t even got to FA yet and he is no doubt going to be our starter week one (barring injury in TC or PS).

  49. J.T. Cross Says:

Sadly (sad because some people buy Winston’s BS), in two years, as Arians is on his way out, the Winston apologists hailing Arians as the guy now to let Winston be Winston or fix his problems, will be blaming Arians for something when Winston fails to lead, impress, and win. No, this team’s got many problems so it’s not fair to blame Winston for most of them. But he’s got his share and his lack of honesty and ability to truly lead is going to continue to set this team back. And Winston’s apologists will still be saying this “kid” just “needs a chance” in his 7th year.

  50. Tony LA Says:

    This is such nonsense.
Sorry, Joes. But the comment yesterday was zero big deal and was used in hopes of stirring up stories. Jameis’ answer is pure PR 101 as well in a world dominated by disposable quick trigger social media reactions and responses. We live in a world where we expect athletes to be available all the time with full access. They say tens of thousands of things over and over and over again and the media sits waiting for one of those tens of thousands of things to be off the PC mark so they can quickly pounce on the story.

It is what it is. But that doesn’t mean we have to swallow it and applaud it when it happens.

  51. Jeebs Says:

He’ll never be good enough for most, as you can tell when he has a good game and the trolls aren’t even on the site for a week.
