Chatter Linking Bucs To Star WR

February 15th, 2019

Reunion?

Would the Bucs ever think of replacing a malcontent with a quitter?

That question springs to mind after listening to former Steelers quarterback Jim Miller discuss the potential landing spots for mercurial, quitting wide receiver Antonio Brown.

Brown, an eight-year veteran wide receiver, is easily the best wide receiver in the NFL. He is lightning fast, can get past any defense, and makes catches that seemingly are not humanly possible. Sometimes, he just toys with defenses.

But as good of a player as he is — and he is absolutely elite in the pure sense of the word — Brown has also turned into a world class headcase. For reasons not quite clear, he went into Operation Shutdown in the final week of practices for the Steelers this past season and missed the final game.

It is believed Brown has likely played his last game in Pittsburgh after invoking Operation Shutdown and recently publicly demanding a trade. But trading a guy who already has a deep reputation of being a supreme diva, and now add to that the well-earned label of quitter plus his $12.6 million salary, that’s going to be a tough deal for the Steelers to consummate.

Speaking on the show he co-hosts with former Bucs scout and Jets linebackers coach and pro player personnel director Pat Kirwan, “Movin’ the Chains,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Miller believes the best place for Brown to land is with your Buccaneers, baby, a reunion with his old offensive coordinator, new Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

“If I am the Steelers, I wouldn’t even want him in the AFC quite frankly,” Miller said. “Again, I think his best spot would be Tampa if DeSean Jackson is out of there. I think Bruce Arians can manage him.”

Because of his antics and his contract, Brown could be had cheap, Kirwan believes. He said if he was a general manager he would offer the Steelers a conditional set of draft picks. The first would be a fifth-round pick. And, Kirwan said, if Brown plays for his new team in 2019, then Kirwan would cough up a third-round pick in 2020, but only if Brown plays a full season.

Joe has to wonder which is worse? A guy like DeSean Jackson who gets into hassles with coaches, tries to get his quarterback benched if not run out of town on national TV, sleeps in meetings, loafs in practice and is generally a malcontent, or a receiver who may be one of the best ever but seems to be one step from an involuntary stay in a mental hospital and already quit on a (good) team?

Would Brown settle down playing for Arians again? Or would he finish what Jackson started and totally tear apart the Bucs locker room?

  1. Mike Says:

Keep DJax and get Antonio Brown too to go along with Evans
That seems pretty good on paper, and I’d like to see it.

    Actually seems quite unstoppable.

Let Winston figure it out with this bunch and if he can’t hit these guys down field….

Relocate the team to Antarctica- it’s a dumpster fire-

    Happy Friday everyone!!

  2. canadianbucsfan Says:

Nope. That money would be better spent on other positions .

  3. FairMinded Says:

I think Arians already nixed this a couple weeks back and AB even responded on Twitter?

  4. FairMinded Says:

Tried posting the link not sure what happened. Google Antonio Bryant Arians diva

  5. Andrew Says:

Don’t forget that massive salary he has.

  6. tiredoflosing Says:

This makes no sense whatsoever. We already are paying Mike Evans top dollar and so now we will bring in a second, # 1 receiver to pay even more too? How do you manage the salary cap in that scenario knowing we have several other holes in this roster? No way, especially for a guy who just quit on his team in week 17. NO THANKS!

  7. Jonzey Says:

We don’t need Brown it won’t be a good fix we have other needs

  8. Buc believer Says:

We already have a head case selfish malcontent receiver what the hell do we need another one for? Right Desean?

  9. Bucafan951 Says:

    No thanks…

  10. ArmyBucsFan Says:

Omg you guys amaze me how quick you all are to judge Brown without knowing the whole story. We may never really know but from the looks of it the Steelers are falling apart because of mike Tomlin. Le’Veon bell, Antonio brown, and a few players in defense all wanted out so without us knowing what really happened how about we WIN FOR A CHANGE WITH PROVEN PLAYERS!!! Get rid of D-Jax and hump for AB. With Evans Brown and Howard the only piece missing is a rushing attack on offense. On defense get rid of McCoy and anyone not names Nassib or JPP and bring in Lawrence to cover the other edge, grab Ford I at OLB, Landon Collins safety, oh and let’s. Or forget about getting rid of grimes. Yes there are a lot of holes but we can’t win because no one respects our offense. If it was up to me I’d have both brown and bell on this team get rid of the under producing dead weight and grab every star player available at their position.

  11. Bird Says:

    0 percent chance.

And guys , this is the best receiver over the last 5 years
Someone will risk it …no question to put up with diva behavior.

Someone will give 1st or second round pick. Something more than what is listed above A team middle or end of first that needs receiver as main priority it. This receiving class is really weak.

The guy flat all balls on the football field and has not shown signs of slowing down

  12. Bucs Guy Says:

Armybucfan has good ideas, but forgot to look at his checkbook. I think we would be about $50M over the salary cap, so that’s not going to happen.

  13. Marlow Says:

Go play with a an who does not follow coaching advice… great idea

  14. ARGH_M8E Says:

Doubt it happens but DJAX would have to go of course. Financially impossible in this scenario of have both on the roster. AB is a freak, u take him over DJAX 10 times out of 10. Him and Evans?! What?!!!! Nasty!

  15. Colonel Angus Says:

Do it. If Arians is this great leader of men we keep hearing about, and Brown wants to play for him, why not? Good luck covering the Bucs WR’s. Swap DJax’s and Gholston’s salary.

  16. dmatt Says:

    ArmyBucsFan,
No way to Brown! Or, as we say in the Army…NEGATIVE!
Would u want someone with the best weapon on the team in a foxhole with you knowing when things don’t go his way he retreats n bail out with his weapon leaving u to defend on ur own? Com on man, he breached his contract? Can’t trust him. He signed a contract so regardless of how he feels, honor ur duties n responsibilities then handle it in a professional manner later. If he quits on his team n shows no respects for one of the most infamous n successful franchises in the NFL, what do u think he’ll do to the Bucs when things don’t go his way. I have no patiences for QUITTERS.

  17. Phil Says:

I hope not. Brown is a good player but he’s an a$xh@le. Don’t need him.

  18. gbobucsfan Says:

Who knows what’s going to happen??

  19. tbbucs3 Says:

Amazing how many Bucs fans are against the possibility of getting litteraly the best Wide Receiver in the NFL.

Instead we would rather get an average player who does drive the speed limit.

News flash, most good NFL wide receivers are Divas.

Just shows that the losing culture for the Bucs is widespread not just for the players and front office, but for the fans as well.

  20. tbbucs3 Says:

Comparing AB to Desean Jackson to laughable. AB is the #1 Wide out in the league, Desean Jackson is the #30th.

  21. Loyaltotheend Says:

Jameis probably couldn’t hit him either

Both he and djax are smaller receivers who need accurate throws

Bigger receivers can catch high balls or bad throws and bail inaccurate qbs out

  22. AlteredEgo Says:

Who is going to hit in on time, in stride ?

  23. passthebuc Says:

Trade for Brown, then package Brown, JW and Jackson for 2 seats to watch New England

  24. scbucsfan Says:

Sure, if I was the Steelers I’d ship him Tampa. No Steeler would ever again speak poorly about the team after a star got shipped to NFLs version of Siberia.

  25. Ndog Says:

Who is going to hit in on time, in stride ?

The same person that hits Evans, Godwin, Humphries, Bobo, Howard, Brate, Watson and every player in stride that is not named DJax.

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We are so bad every NFL pundit suggests every player would be good for the Bucs…….Bring ’em all on!!!

    We don’t need WRs…….It’s the Oline, Dline & RB…..STUPID!!!

  27. wrom buc Says:

Go get ab, we need play makers. We don’t have anyone on his level who is able to create yac in space.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Miller’s idea is a bad one, and here’s why:

Aside from the hit on the cap…aside from AB’s diva attitude…the real issue is Jameis’ accuracy. I’m a Jameis guy, and I think he is more accurate than some people believe, but he does need at least some improvement. That’s one of the things Arians is supposed to fix.

    And the other reason?

Jameis would be expected to focus most of his efforts on connecting with AB, if not by the coaches, then by everyone else. We saw how that worked out for the rest of the offense. Everyone elses production we t down when Jameis kept trying to connect with Jackson.

  29. Bruce Blahak Says:

Pay an idiot malcontent player big cash? Boy, that would be the stupidest of all the stupid moves by this franchise. CULTURE CHANGE is item #1 for Arians, not spending money on garbage.

  30. AlteredEgo Says:

    Dwayne Haskins !

  31. Wausa Says:

If the Bucs did that they would move on from Humphries and Djax.

Bucs could trade DJax and fourth round pick in 2019 and conditional third in 2020(if AB has 1,200 yards receiving or more in 2019).

  32. Tom Edrington Says:

    Simply Balderdash!

  33. Not there yet Says:

Unless your a Steelers fan and follow that team closely not sure how anyone can judge AB like we do D Jackson and d jack has pulled this crap with any other teams except us so don’t blame him for being malcontent blame the weak arse coaching staff for not having any balls. Only weak coaches like the ones we hire worry about locker room culture and it’s really overblown

Want to know why the locker room has been weak sense Chucky left? Look at the sorry arse coaching hires. It’s actually a good thing we have a few players on the roster BA can make an example of. The contract for these guys isn’t to far off but obviously guy isn’t on Twitter and realized BA burned that bridge can won’t be getting AB in a trade but he is a good fit just not a realistic one

  34. zzbuc Says:

No more egos in the locker room, I hope mesean is on his way out, and better Jameis start being a better teammate if not you are next!!!!! This selfish players out of Tampa, more than proven that they only care about their stats and dont care about W……..We need more Kwon’s or Marpet’s or Lavonte’s, and less of this divas

  35. From76 Says:

Bucs need to draft a QB.

  36. Waterboy Says:

Bucs already have a #1 WR, I’ll pass.

  37. Juggernautical Says:

Simple economics, trade DJax and his $10mil for AB84 and his $12.6mil. You’re telling me $2.6mil isn’t worth the “upgrade”? Plus, AB is younger

  38. SOEbuc Says:

Negative. Swap another, more expensive diva for another. Mike is our #1 WR and Godwin is #2. Send DJax packin’. PAY HUMP! Give Watson some reps. We have to stack the trenches and BA and Bowels are going to being swapping out a lot of other guys on defense to switch to a hybrid 3-4. We could get a good CB and good olineman for AB dollars.

  39. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Pass. Give Chris Godwin a shot as #2 and Justin Watson a shot at #3. We have other position more in need. Every position on Defense needs a player or two and we need a revamp on the right side of the Oline.

  40. joestang Says:

rather have Bell than Brown. I dont see either of them ending up here, we have to many other needs. Money will be better spent on defense

  41. DB55 Says:

Can’t we trade djax or gmc to Pitt for AB? Salaries would offset.

Or release Grimes and Curry to open up the salary.

ME, AB and DJ would be crazy

  42. BucsFIRE Says:

    NO.
    No interest WHATSOEVER.

  43. BucsFIRE Says:

    ArmyBucsFan Says:
“Omg you guys amaze me how quick you all are to judge Brown without knowing the whole story.”

    ——-

First of all, thank you for your service.
Second of all, no offense, but seriously.. “quick to judge”???
This guy is a complete and total cancer, and a waste of a locker room space.
He has done PLENTY to show who he is.

  44. El_Buc941 Says:

Massive salary?I would rather pay Antonio Brown $12.5 mil than pay McCoy $13mil. Also I think brown would be all in to come play alongside possibly one of the top 3 WRs in the NFL in money Mike Evans. Man if we get Antonio Brown and pair him with Godwin,Evans and Howard we could be thee #1 offense for years to come. That move would make the NFC South very interesting. We would become the NFLs Golden State Warriors.lol

  45. Bucsdelight Says:

I’d rather get Bell than AB as it is more of a need, but sure, if we can afford it, why not try to bring both on.

  46. Pickgrin Says:

If Arians was actually serious about wanting to keep DJax – why not spend $2.6M more along with a mid round draft pick for a MAJOR upgrade?

AB, ME and Godwin would without question be the best trio of receivers in the league on one team…..

That move would negate the need to pay Humphries the $7-$8M he is looking for as well.

Perhaps Arians’ seemingly “random” shot across the bow directed at Brown a few weeks ago was intentional? Because he already knew that Licht had designs on bringing AB to Tampa Bay? Hmmmmm….

  47. tbbucs3 Says:

    SOE

So your solution to making a football team better is automatically passing on the best WR in the NFL and “get Justin Watson” some reps. Sounds like you’d be a great GM.

  48. BucsFIRE Says:

    You never really know, tbbucs3.
At one time, Steve Largent (in his era) and Shannon Sharpe (in his era) were thought less of than Justin Watson.

Don’t get me wrong, I am NOT saying J Watson will be in that class.
All I am saying is that the kid has an “it” factor about him.
    You never know.

    But AB?
    Sorry, NO. — Not ever.

  49. StoutGospel Says:

    @DB55…

Umm, Grimes isn’t even on our roster, never was this offseason. He’s an UFA now, so…can’t cut the guy, ain’t on our payroll. Curry was cut 2 days ago, it was on here multiple times. C’mon now…

Amazing how many Bucs fans are against the possibility of getting litteraly the best Wide Receiver in the NFL.

I say the exact same thing every day that you posted. maybe not as politely or as eloquently but same end conclusion. no one fears personality and talent like a low standard glazer trained bucfan.

  51. DB55 Says:

Yup that’s what I said now that Grimes n Curry are cut it freed up the money.

  52. Mort Says:

Uh, yes please! Trade D-Jax and a pick. That’s one hell of an upgrade for everyone tbh. DeSean gets to play with a pro bowl vet QB, they still have a burner who can open everything up and they would be fine with that I believe. Tampa would then have two of the best WRs and a coming on Elite TE. Not much more in cap cost, and I believe AB would be better for Jameis than DeSean.

  53. theodore Says:

“He is lightning fast” is the type of WR Jameis can’t connect with.

kinda like giving Mr Magoo a Ferrari

  55. tmaxcon Says:

I am assuming magoo is Jameis winston the most important buccaneer of all time and 3rd most talented in franchise history…that magoo???

  56. BucsFIRE Says:

    Or giving AlteredEgo a platform…

  57. Thegregwitul Says:

Where the heck are the Bucs going to come up with the money to acquire Brown? Yeah, I understand that the team will make cuts, but would Brown be the ideal option over a RB like Bell, if the Bucs wanted a big name offensive weapon, or should the team look to fill other holes? I’m interested to see what happens.

  58. Tim Says:

Will never happen, AB is still salty about BA calling him a diva.

The bucs need to focus on G and RB in FA to free them up in the draft to take BPA. Let the be OT, DE or DB. IF the Bucs fail to address these positions in FA then the 1st RD will be RB (if one is graded that high or trade down and get) or an OL with versatility to play inside or out.

  59. calbucsfan Says:

The guy is the best receiver in the NFL, I would much rather the Bucs take a chance with him than Jackson. DJ has worn out his welcome here, just as Brown has in Pittsburgh. I would do a straight swap without hesitation………and then turn around and talk to the Steelers about Bell too.

The Bucs need to start winning MORE than losing, let’s give HC Arians as many weapons as he needs to win!

  60. ateonetree Says:

NO. i rather spend the money on leveon bell

  61. calbucsfan Says:

Add Brown and Bell, then use all draft picks for the defense and OL.

  62. BucEmUp 7 Says:

    hell no

  63. Pruritus Ani Says:

Yes of course.. let’s give rid of one idiot and bring in another.

  64. BucsFIRE Says:

  65. lambchop Says:
