Report: Buckner Is Out

January 9th, 2019

Gone?

[UPDATE: 9:59 a.m.]

A guy under contract with the Bucs and who previously worked for Bucco Bruce Arians in Arizona is reportedly not staying with Tampa Bay.

Per good guy Alex Marvez of SiriusXM NFL Radio, Arians will not retain the services of defensive line coach Brentson Buckner.

This is very much a surprise to Joe. Buckner did a wonderful job last year with a defensive line that had been really bad for the Bucs for too long. He helped Jason Pierre-Paul get double-digit sacks, which broke a Bucs drought dating back to Simeon Rice.

This bums Joe out.

[UPDATE: 9:59 a.m.] There seems to be some debate whether this is a done deal or not or if Buckner will be retained.

Hate to see him go, but best to clean house.

  2. Pryda..sec147 Says:

    Not bummed…

  3. NJBucsFan Says:

After seeing how JPP played, watching him get fired up on the sideline, and hearing him speak after the games/season….I fully believe he would have double digit sacks regardless of DL coach.

  4. Pat Says:

I liked Buck but Bowles is bringing in his DC from Jets. That is probably a good thing. Need info on Kacy Rodgers.

  5. Bradentonbuc Says:

Bucs going to a 3-4 defense?? What does that mean for GMAC and JPP?

  6. NPRSageBoy Says:

A new broom sweeps clean. I guess that means Duffner, too

  7. Bradentonbuc Says:

Are we switching to a 3-4?

  8. Not there yet Says:

I doubt he helped JPP that dude is just on a different level than everyone else on our d line so what could he teach that he didn’t learn from that great d line that beat the patriots in the super bowl. It just worries Todd Bowles is bringing his guy like we’re really going to a 3-4?

  9. James Walker Says:

He will have a job by Monday

  10. pepsi Says:

did he do a wonderful job? or did we just land JPP and Nassib? its not like McCoy had anywhere close to his best year, or Gholston did anything, or Spence managed to even get on the field, and Vea not much until reportedly talked to by Licht to not even worry about doing exactly what hes being told by Buckner… Nah im more concerned about the Dline personel then I am about Coach. something tells me Hayes woulda looked Okay with JPP and Nassib as well..

  11. 813bucboi Says:

time to talk playoffs i guess…..

Changing of the staff…not unexpected. Not bummed.

  13. Deminion Says:

    @Pepsi

Good point, no young guys developed under him, hard truth. I just wonder what happens with McCoy and JPP now does bowles force them into his system

  14. Bucsfaninchina Says:

D line didnt truly improve until Duff took the reins. Dude with a great personality but all is well baby.

  15. Joe Says:

D line didnt truly improve until Duff took the reins. Dude with a great personality but all is well baby.

    Or Duffner turned Buckner loose.

  16. AlteredEgo Says:

[There have been no reports Joe is aware of that have Warren Sapp joining the coaching staff. — Joe]

  17. BuccobruceJR Says:

McCoy is getting traded no doubt about it. He is one of the diseases in the locker room that ppl talk about. He there bark you on to work all three quarters and where is that dude ever lighting it up in the 4th quarter? Yeah never. He likes dancing on the sideline though while losing. I backed him up for far too long. Now he needs to go.

  18. Coburn Says:

Buckner talked the talk but did he actually elevate anyone’s game? Tough to say…. be interesting to see if any of thr new coaches think they can salvage Noah Spencer. Regardless of who dc was Bucker didn’t think2he deserved any playing time. Probably was right based on the little time he got and was invisible.

  20. Pat Says:

Just reading how Bowles defense with the Jets relied on tight coverage from cornerbacks. A lot of 1:1 coverage. Personnel may not be on the Bucs team right now. Could be a work in progress for a year or so… we’ll see.

  21. BuccobruceJR Says:

    All four quarters I meant.

  22. Lubby Smith Says:

    I blame Todd Bowles.

  23. 941bucsfan Says:

Bucs aint switching to 3-4 let that ish rest.. people automatically think that 3-4 means a good defense.. get over it. Todd bowles is here to make the best out of the pieces he currently has. The bucs dont have a Trillion $ in Free agency nor do they have a GM that can sign the right free agents or draft the right guys to run a 3-4 defense. When are yall gonna get that through your skulls. This team is not in rebuild mode, so getting rid of GMC and lavonte and probably JPP just to run a “3-4” aint happening. We have been talking this 3-4 non sense for the last 10 years. Give it up. And we dont need any of you “internet coaches” to tell me how u think lavonte can play inside or rush the passer in a 3-4 defense. When todd bowles press conference comes around and he says what every coach says, “we are going to be multiple, give multiple looks to confuse the offense, but we will be a primarily base defense”. You guys will then realize 3-4 is just a stupid dream

  24. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

Just what we need coaches from the loser Jets!

  25. 813bucboi Says:

gotta draft ed oliver or quentin williams to pair with vita….

    #DEFENSEWINSCHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  26. Kobe Faker Says:

“Multi tasking. GM and Dline coach. We have found out what Jason Gump is actually good at…

    Samoan Whisperer”

    Kobe Faker

  27. Bucnjim Says:

JPP is a professional that takes pride in himself and the job he does. Doubt very much he needs to be coached up or motivated to do his best on the field. Great players are great no matter what the situation or team played for.

  28. Iron Wombat Says:

The Commish said Bowles ran a hybrid 4-3/3-4 defense and i’m going to defer to him on that. Which I think would be fine. The D will be in transition. McCoy is probably gone no matter what scheme they run. 13 Million a year for 1.5 tackle a game and getting blown out of your gap on run plays sounds like a bad deal to me. JPP is a baller so he’s fine. Kwon being a free agent coming off a knee injury is a question mark. As for a guy like David, put that dude in a 3-4 and let him get after the QB. Either way the new defense should be aggressive. Hopefully no more corners lining up 10 yards off the receiver. I think we’re going to find out how bad our coaches have been over the last 5 years.

  29. stpetebucsfan Says:

I must admit I’m smiling a bit. There is a significant number of coaches in the NFL who are VERY good. There is also a number who are awful.

Making moves does not necessarily reflect on the talent of any coach or player for that matter. Do we believe Khalil Mack must have been damaged goods because Chucky let him walk?

It’s absolutely possible that Buckner AND the new DL coach are both very good. When you’re going into battle you want a comfort factor in the trenches that comes from working with your favorites.

If there is a damning fact in all of this it’s that Arians actually coached with Buckner.

  30. Locked In Says:

Definitely interested in seeing how the defensive coaching staff rounds out. Also very interested in special teams coach! Also very pleased to see Warhop out!

  31. VaTom Says:

The tweet reads new TB DC Todd Bowles…? Is that a done deal? Anyone heard that for certain?

He will have a job by Monday

Buckner was on the street unemployed when bucs hired. Buckner is nothing special just a last ditch effort to prop up get something out of the doll playing crying clown cancer93

  33. Bird Says:

Looks like kacy Rodgers pumped out 3 pro bowlers when Dline coach for dolphins.

He was defensive coordinator with jets last few years and defense was average ; and I think Bowles took away play calling duties at end of last year But some guys are better at certain more defined roles. So fine with Dline coach
After all. Appears Bowles was better defensive coordinator then head coach.

  34. Bird Says:

    Vatom

    Yah Bowles is done deal.

Go back to yesterday and all assistants to date listed.

  35. Bird Says:

    Joe

How long am I going to be in moderation timeout ?

    Cmon

There are posters on here that encourage other posters to go kill themselves. And Say much nastier things then I do.

  36. Fire Light Says:

    Good luck the Buckner

  37. Joel Says:

No one is trading for McCoy and his $13M salary. Sorry. Keep dreaming.

He’ll be cut. Thank God. Most overrated Buccaneer in franchise history.

  38. Dave5928 Says:

I’m disappointed Buckner was not retained but you have to think Bruce Arians knows him very well. This could well be something that ties back to their time together with the Cardinals. He was one of the very few bright spots on the Bucs in 2018.

  39. Joel Says:

Quick question – McCoy sympathizers always said that he needed help around him. Well, he got JPP and Nassib this year. But same ol’ McCoy.

    Good riddance.

Same with Buckner. Average coach at best. But so many in Tampa are used to mediocrity so when they see average, they think its greatness. Same with Todd Monken. Moving on.

  40. Christopher Schiefen Says:

How did he do a wonderful job. The sack increase happened literally because JPP walked thru the door. McCoy decreased, Spence was a non-factor, Allen decreased, Gholston was mediocre, Vita only woke up when Jason talked to him, and Nassib was on his last chance. I know the system called for holding players up for the linebackers to clean up, but I saw almost no pass rush moves from anybody all year.

  41. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

@ 941bucsfan – “Bucs aint switching to 3-4 let that ish rest.. people automatically think that 3-4 means a good defense.. get over it.”

I think otherwise. Although Todd Bowles has switched from a 3-4 to a 4-3 in back to back games he has always preferred a 3-4 defensive front – why? Because he loves to blitz. In fact, I think he is the most blitz happy DC in the entire NFL.

  42. Durango 95 Says:

    New broom sweeps clean

  43. Bobby Says:

McCoy was fine. Good DT’s force things to turn outside and DE’s clean up because QB’s can’t step up in the pocket. No, McCoy didn’t have a great year but he helped JPP have one. It’s not always about tackles and sacks. It’s about being disruptive and blowing up plays. He came into the 2018 season as the #2 ranked DT in the league.

  44. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

as stated above and I kept stating how great could buckner be if his own DC from the cards who got the DC in NY didnt hire him and the bucs did………another licht failure of a hire or a FA….this also shows that Arians in charge of the franchise and that is great news

  45. Mike Johnson Says:

No surprise here. new Dc’s typically bring their people on that side of the ball with them. Buckner will catch on another NFL team. Hell, he may even end up back in AZ for another yr or 2. Thats about how long their new HC will last.

  46. Zwak Says:

Please keep Sapp far away from One Buc Place!

  47. Getaclue Says:

Why do people question David playing inside a 3-4 when Mark Barron is mlb in a 2-4

  48. Getaclue Says:

    3-4*

  49. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Appreciate the work U put in Coach Buck.
Catch U on the flip side my brotha.

  50. LUVMYBUCS Says:

There are several teams out there with a ton of cap space.
That would Luv to have a veteran 3 tech like McCoy on their squad.
So don’t sell the Bucs short on retaining some type of compensation.
Be it a younger prospect or a draft pick.

Solomon Thomas & 4th Rd Pk for GMC?

  51. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Lavonte David is prototypical “Weakside ILB” in a 3-4 Defense

    Examples
    • Ryan Shazier
    • Darron Lee
    • Danny Trevathan
    • Zach Cunningham
    • Kyle Van Noy

  52. LUVMYBUCS Says:

i think at this point in GMC career he may not want to pick up and move his batcave….

but i do like solomon and the 9ers are about to wash their hands with him….

i would see if GMC would restructure for a 3year 18mil contract with incentives…..then call john and offer a 4th for soloman thomas….then draft ed oliver at #5….

that’ll be great depth and talent at the DT position….

Please keep Sapp far away from One Buc Place!

why would you want the only true legend not to be around team. he carried all those choir boy has beens you worship… let me remind you those has beens he carried single handedly never won a single playoff game without sapp on roster. simple as that.

  55. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I would rather keep Buckner.

    Jets sacks have been

    2018 – 16th (Up 12 spots)
    2017 – 28th
    2016 – 29th

    Bucs sacks have been

    2018 – 19th (Under Buckner up 13 spots)
    2017 – 32nd
    2016 – 9th

Kacy Rodgers has shown very little to prove he;s good at his job. True, he did better this year than Buckner…but still…

  56. Marques Says:

I’m not crazy about one assistant coach that has been reported and now Buckner out? I like Arians, the man, the teacher, the coach. So far I’m not impressed with any of the reported hires. I have an open mind but I just don’t like any of his choices.

  57. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    813

IMO Jeffery Simmons is a better overall prospect. So I would take him at #5.

Unless (Any) of the following would like to move up for QB
    #6. Giants
    #7. Jaguars
    #8. Denver
    #13. Dolphins
    #15. Washington

  58. Tony LA Says:

Buckner was overrated by the local media.
    Team went 5-11
Defense went from absolutely atrocious to only mildly bad at the end.
    Nothing worth retaining here.

The Bucs got Bowles. That’s what matters. Whoever he wants to implement his system is fine by all of us.

  59. Brandon Says:

All of these clueless people asking if we’re switching the 3-4… you realize that when Arians name came up as a candidate that he was going to run the 3-4, that Todd Bowles ran the 3-4 under him and ran it for the Jets. When Bowles left the Cardinals to coach the Jets, Arians’ defensive coordinator was James Bettcher, the same James Bettcher of the Giants that decided that JPP wasn’t a good fit for his defense and shipped him off to the Bucs for a 3rd round pick. He runs the same style 3-4 as Bowles does… and JPP wasn’t a good fit… so yeah, there’s the downside of this that I was dreading. JPP is a 4-3 RDE. Nassib is a very good young 4-3 base DE. McCoy, love him or hate him is still the protoype 4-3 under tackle, Vita could probably be great in either the 4-3 or 3-4. Then at LB, both David and Alexander are prototype run and hit 4-3 LBs, not 3-4 run stuffers or edge blitzers. Beckwith showed promise at MLB but he is also a run and hit guy, though he might be able to play the 3-4 as well. All in all, the better players on the front seven are best suited for the 4-3. BTW, Bowles defenses in NY haven’t been very good… nor were all of his defenses in Arizona. I’m not a fan of this move. It takes two full offseasons to switch personnel from 4-3 or 3-4. Maybe if this was Wade Phillips and he is able to let these guys excel at what they do best, we’ll be okay but I’m not holding my breath.

  60. Jerry Jones Says:

    Test

  61. Jerry Jones Says:

    You’re 100% wrong Brandon.

I researched every lineman we have after trade deadline and the draft to see if they ever played a 3-4 and almost all of them with the consideration of GMC(and GMC actually has played a little 3-4) has played in a 3-4 base. I was curious if Smith would run more 3-4 looks this year because he spoke about possibly switching it up but we all now what happened Mike.

  62. LUVMYBUCS Says:

If anything I’m on the phone Arizona for Chandler Jones for JPP + future compensation.

  63. TOM Says:

Is it for sure that Buckner is gone? I’ve been reading conflicting reports. And what about Duffner? Would like to see him retained as LB coach.

  64. JimmyJack Says:

Buckner did do a good job here but Joe I think youight be over inflating his value due to the fact of how bad our line has been since Rice.

Getting a 10 sack player is only a big deal to Bucs fans. He got handed JPP too. Not like he turned rust to gold there. Another poster mentioned a guy like Gholston did nothing for Buck……not a ringing endorsement. Buckner had little to show for Curry and Beau Allen as well. Don’t think we are losing hods gift to coaching here.

I’m more then cool letting Bruce handpick his own staff. Especially with Buckner since they are very familiar with each other. We wouldn’t let Buck go for no good reason.

  65. J dubb Says:

Bowles isn’t here for sure, he may go to bears and I would imagine would take Kacy Rodgers there with him. So would our new DC ( if not bowles) want buckner and would buckner want to stay possibly feeling slighted thinking he wasn’t wanted here by this staff originally.

  66. JimmyJack Says:

And yes…….We are switching to 3-4. We just hired a 3-4 guy, duuh.

This guy is not going to change his entire philosphy because that’s what got him here.

I would like to see him retain JPP and run some different wrinkles to utilize him. At the end of the day JPP is a very good football player who brings a rare and special mentality to his team. Guys like him are irreplaceable.

  67. J dubb Says:

Our “3-4 guy” hasn’t been hired yet….between us and bears

  68. gambelero Says:

Buckner did a great job in my opinion. If he could’ve worked with Duffner instead of “play soft” through training camp and at the start of the season, the year would have turned out a lot different.

  69. IE Buc Says:

I really wanted Brenston Buckner to be the DC, but that he won’t even stay on as DL coach is outrageous.

He is being replaced by Kacy Rodgers, the failed 4 year DC of the Jets who was responsible for the atrocious defenses the Jets put out every year. Bowles went through 3 OCs but could never fire his buddy. His failure to do anything about Rodgers is what made Jets fans furious and believe helped doom him as a HC.

The buddy over quality doomed Koetter, so I hope it doesn’t doom Bowles and Arians. Buckner is quality who deserves to be DL coach.

  70. JimmyJack Says:

IE……Kacy Rodgers was hired and promoted by the Big Tuna himself. Think there’s something to be argued about quality there.

If every bit of everything gets blamed on coach’s then Bill Bellichick would be a coordinator right now.

  71. Owlykat Says:

The reason Buckner’s DL did not look aggressive under Smith is Smith demanded Buckner teach his linemen to just engage and occupy the OL so the LBs could shoot the gaps. That is why Vea was just holding on inside and not getting off blocks. Duff reversed that and then you saw Vea bloom and production picked up all across the front. I am sorry to see Buckner go and thank him for his help this year!

  72. old time buc Says:

To all the coaches who have been let go let me say Thank you and I hope you all are successful in the future! There is no point in backstabbing any one of them!
They are gone now so get behind the coaches who are here.
    GO BUCS!

  73. Reach87 Says:

Ole time Buc…here here. Thanks for showing some what class and grace look like. Go Bucs!
