NFL Network: Bruce Arians’ Non-Retirement Was A Factor; Interview More Of A Formality

January 6th, 2019

Here’s this morning’s latest from NFL Network on the heir apparent to the Bucs kingdom, two-time NFL Coach of the Year Bruce Arians.

Of course, the lets’-get-it-done-now timetable at One Buc Palace was a known commodity at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters Friday afternoon.

This morning, NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo dove into the speed of things and, interestingly, Garafolo explains he’s heard Arians was working so hard studying film and traveling for his CBS Sports analyst gig that the 66-year-old felt he might as well just coach again since he’s not retired.

There’s more in the video below. Rapoport also notes the Bucs still will be interviewing Cowboys assistant Kris Richard today.

  1. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

Ian Rapoport said Bucs will likely pick Bruce arians to be their head coach early next week SO IT MUST BE TRUE!!!

    Let’s go Bucs!

  2. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Hooray!!!

  3. Buc believer Says:

    Make it so!

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

I guess they going to interview Richard encase they get Parcelled again.

  5. TexBuc Says:

Heard that somewhere? You should do a story about this Joe…lol

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

They are interviewing Reeechard….for the professional interview training/experience

  7. Anonymous Says:

They said no later than Tuesday and obviously you seen him in Tampa so put the pieces together … cmon it’s not that much of a shocker

  8. Wausa Says:

The most exciting thing about him as the head coach is the winning culture he will bring.

I can’t wait to see what he can do with Jamies Winston when he gives him a good running game, defense and special teams.

  9. BrianBucs Says:

Everybody is so excited that Arians will come here and fix Winston, me included.
However, my big worry is that so much emphasis will be put on fixing Winston that fixing the defense will not be a big enough of a priority. There’s a lot of work to be done on that side of the ball

  10. john Says:

The media is so dumb.. he said he would coach for the browns cause IT WAS THE ONLY OPEN JOB!!!!!!!

Coaches do this ALL the time!

  11. Boltcc Says:

    Parcelled again. That’s awesome

  12. LJS4th Says:

Draft a left tackle at #5 and pick up a FA guard and that will help fix Shamis and the running game!!! Let’s get BA!!!

  13. MTM Says:

What will Winston jock sniffers do if Arians pulls the plug on the JW project? If Arians says Winston is not serviceable. Then what?

  14. DBS Says:

Not getting excited at all. No matter who they hire it is and will be a SHOW ME team. No more false hope.

  15. Buc_The_World Says:

What if Jameis is an MVP candidate under Bruce Arians. Will you f@#kers shut up then.

  16. 813bucboi Says:

It’ll be Kris….licht is doing his buddy a favor by getting his name out there that he wants to coach again….. smoke in mirrors… Lol…. Dallas’s defense was great last night…. Kris sealed the deal….

  17. Jim Says:

So once again we return to the idea that getting a coach that can work with Winston (like Koetter, remember?), after he’s been given the best receiving corps in the NFL, will lead us to the Super Bowl. Might work this time, who knows? We’ll ignore the defense some more; and that way we can continue to blame them for any losses.

  18. old time buc Says:

    Buc_The_World : No they won’t!

  19. DooshLaRue Says:

    813

You’re really holding out hope huh?
I’m not totally against Reeshard, but I just don’t see it happening right now.
The Glazers want a proven HC and Licht needs him badly.
I think he will help guide Licht’s draft/vision and I’m great with that.
Also add in Buckner having coached for him too….. just makes the most sense to me for a team that has talent but has lost their way.

  20. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Good god the haters are so exhausting. If it’s Arians trust me he will hire a defensive coordinator. Once he watches film he will realize that defense is the biggest problem on this team and will place an emphasis on it. Regarding the offense, he will develop a scheme to play to Winston’s strengths and try to find a way to effectively run the ball. Jameis is and will be just fine. Once the rest of the team is improved you will see things take off. It may take more than a season though to get this defense to an NFL level of talent.

  21. ghost Says:

joe was right and make some others look silly.

    nice job, jbf

  22. old time buc Says:

Well here is my fake list for the Bucs. Might as well get it out there and let you guys tear it down.
    1) Jonah Williams
    2) Raekwon Davis
    3)Derrick Baity
    4)Benny Snell
    5)Elgton Jenkins
    6)Daniel Jones
    7)Andre Dillard

  23. Bird Says:

Arians made a over the hill , injury prone , somewhat washed up Carson Palmer look like a pretty solid quarterback.

He should be able to do same for Jameis.

    Otherwise , we’ve got a big problem

  24. AlteredEgo Says:

TDTB…. LOL..”once he watches film he’ll realize the defense is the biggest problem”……all he has the do is look in the year end standings PF-PA….Draft does need attention DL & DB….anyone one game will show that….however I think our 3 DB’s drafted last year learned a lot for rookie and that will pay dividends soon…..VHIII at nickle next year will be interesting

  25. Kobe Faker Says:

“Matt Eberflus and Ken Norton jr is way more qualified than db coach Keith Richards

We need a experienced DC in Bowles than a fired DC coach Richards

Way over hype on this cat”

    Kobe Faker

  26. Buc407 Says:

So we are running a. 3-4 now?

  27. Waterboy Says:

Rick Stroud said there’s no timetable to announce the next coach and anyone saying otherwise is basically just guessing or not talking to people involved in the process.

  28. Jwil8027 Says:

Get your Buccaneers Kangols ready fellas!!

  29. Bucsfan DFW Says:

All teams and every quarterback has at least one, and generally a couple of head scratcher games per season. Other than the bonehead off season decisions that Jameis made (when he was apparently hammered), he has put and kept the Bucs in games his entire career. The defense and kicking game has lost more games in the last 4 years than I care to count. If Arians is able to hire or retain a DC that can create even a marginal defense, and we get an O-Line coach that can create the occasional hole for our running backs, the Bucs will get to the Dance. With the skill positions we have right now, no one in the league was able to stop the offense. We stopped ourselves (or as Monken said, they chose to suck). Bringing in a proven coach, that expects success, should get the Bucs over the hump. Let’s see if Arians gets the job, who he brings in for his coaches and then let it play out. I am forecasting that we get to the dance next year, but probably 3 years to get to NFC Championship game, and then we see how it plays. As always, Go Bucs

  30. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

if it is arians then why keep interviewing ppl, sign the dude yesterday. Or does the NFL send out a double secret memo not to over shadow the playoff games

  31. Jwil8027 Says:

Rick Stroud is stubborn and thinks he knows it all. The Joes don’t feed into that. Stroud is not the only one with connections. If anything the team has come to not trust Tampa Bay Times or former Tampa Bay Times columnists.

  32. Kobe Faker Says:

“Hate to be off topic but

Marlon Mack 4th round 143rd pick

    And our 199lber Jones 2nd round 38th pick…

I hope BA does the grocery shopping”

    Kobe Faker

  33. Buc1987 Says:

Buc_The_World…I doubt it….they WANT Winston to fail…that’s the goal buddy.

  34. Jwil8027 Says:

Loved Marlon Mack at USF. Local guy too. Definitely a miss not giving him a shot.

  35. TexBuc Says:

    @BucsFan
Well said I could not agree more with your evaluation of the Bucs.

  36. Elita Vita Says:

Earlier in his career Arians was a running backs coach. Get a talented running back to go along with Barber and upgrade LT in the draft. We need to see how Jameis fares with these improvements before the end of next year. Work on upgrading defense through free agency.

  37. Buc believer Says:

@MTM… the REAL question is what will all you Winston HATERS do when Arians turns him into the Super Bowl winning QB we know he is.

  38. TOM Says:

The other day some fan said to show him one fan that was jacked up for BA as HC & I responed by saying I’m one fan that would love to see BA as HC. Now today look at all the fans that jumped on the BA bandwagon.

  39. VoiceofReason Says:

Licht will push Glazers to pick and pay Arians because it the safest choice for him and his career. Every other coach on our radar is an unknown quantity as a head coach. Arians has the been there and done that chops. For a GM on the hot seat it is the only choice he could make. You interview the other guys so you have intelligence for the future should it be necessary.

@MTM… the REAL question is what will all you Winston HATERS do when Arians turns him into the Super Bowl winning QB we know he is.

    every coin has two sides….

  41. Elita Vita Says:

I believe many of us were onboard with Arians for a while now.

  42. gotbbucs Says:

So long as whoever he brings in as DC is willing and able to run more multi-front defense I’m fine with Arians. We better have a good back-up QB because Winston will get hurt in Arians’ offensive scheme.

  43. Broy34 Says:

Idk why everyone keeps saying fix Winston. Winston already fixed himself. Did u guys not watch the games after he was benched. He played extremely efficient took sacks and didn’t make risky throws. He threw for 375 4 TDS and his “pick” was a hail Mary. Did what he needed to win and of course defense let him down. Winston is fine and is going to be resigned. Bank on it

  44. bucsnole Says:

    Duthsty Rhothdes Says:
“Or does the NFL send out a double secret memo not to over shadow the playoff games”

Probably a little of both – let the WC games carry the news for today and Glazers get better press on a Monday or Tuesday

  45. cmurda Says:

BA was my first choice all along. Richard is second. say what you want about Licht but if indeed BA is our next Head Coach, Jason would have a lot to do with that. I’ll hold off my celebration until we have a formal announcement.

  46. Kobe Faker Says:

“Its who you know not who you draft”

    Jason Gump

  47. David Says:

Bucs have been burned before, so they have to do their due diligence and have a backup plan. Interviews may have also already been scheduled for awhile. Rude to just cancel. And yes the NFL frowns on big announcements during playoff games. Bucs may actually wait till Tuesday because of the college champ game.

  48. Elita Vita Says:

    @ David

Nicely explained. Like they used to say in the old days “right on”.

  49. Darin Says:

    Kobe
Always like Mack. Having said that I’m not writing off Ronald Jones yet. Look at Macks rookie season. Not exactly like yesterdays game. Not to mention the Colts have one heck of a line and use 6 OLinemen alot. Lets wait to see Jones with a real coaching staff and a much improved run blocking line. You better believe if its Arians he will get some better linemen in here. Some guys take a bit to mature and as we’ve seen Dirk was klueless. Jones’ career is just getting started.

  50. T REX Says:

Arians has one playoff win…one. Head coach for 5 yrs…only made playoffs twice. Not sure what the excitement is all about. His last two seasons sucked. Thus has bust written all over it. Choosing a head coach based on Winston is a major mistake. But it is the glazers.

  51. Michael Wright Says:

If Arians is the new HC, My faith is on the rise again. BEcause Bruce has always hired great DC’s. HE use to say in AZ, You cannot win in the NFl without a very good Defense. I really like that.

  52. Patrick in SC (formerly VA) Says:

I learned my lesson by banging the drum for Lovie to come in. I don’t have any interest in retreat coaches again. He was let go from Arizona for a reason. Unless we trade for a coach that is currently operating at a high level, which I don’t want to do either, I would always prefer elevating a high performing coordinator or college HC from a non-perennial powerhouse school that is consistently playing above their recruit rating expectations.

  53. firethecannons Says:

Bruce Arians has what it takes to change the culture of this team. He absolutely is an in your face kind of coach, he will be the only coach able to provide top tier coaches for all the positions. Jason Licht can be and will be forgiven for all of his previous discretions in regards to player personnel if and only if he can pull this off.
Our only hope lies with BA.

  54. AfrikaThaRapper Says:

    Being that it’s a Buc’s life, I will believe it when I see it. Go Bucs…….sh*t !!!!!

  55. AfrikaThaRapper Says:

@Patrick in SC Bruce Arians wasn’t let go in Arizona, he retired for health reasons, buddy. How do you not know this???

  56. Elita Vita Says:

Bruce Arians this week was ranked the #1 available coach at the moment.(If he decides to come out of “retirement”.

  57. Kobe Faker Says:

    @dave

BA would make Mack a 2k rb

In the modern NFL the #1 Running back must be a above average pass reciever. The ability to able to playcall a screen/wheel route to your #1 back on 1st and 2nd down is huge to the OC scheme and exposes all defenses

**its absoluelt amazing how well our offense and JW actually played with predicable Klueless playcalling with the RBs. Run inside with our #1 back on 1st and 2nd down and bring in the pass catching specist on 3rd down(sims) lol and still JW made it work

Duel run/pass RBs are a must and reason why the top offenses have these players

  58. Rod Munch Says:

Not only could we get a new coach who would be the best guy available, and in my mind the #2 best option short of a massive trade for Tomlin – we also can finally get rid of these God awful uniforms we’ve been plagued with for the last 5 years. It could be a new day in Tampa Bay once again.

Your statement could mean almost anything. How many years does the so called candidate have to be above level. Why not Arians who was above level in all his NFL jobs in the past who will have an above level coaching staff with him.

  60. Nate Says:

Bet your @$$ jameis at all cost unreasonable fans…Arians still drafts a haskins just in case

Some of yall dont even want Jameis to be pushed n you got your backup

Ain’t no gator RT the top lineman this year worth #5 ….no Saquon RB…No CB worth a top 5 n geralds replacement AL DL Williams will be gone

Top 5 you draft best player avail

  61. rick Says:

I hope ba keeps buckner, given their history together in arizona. I don’t think the defense will change to a 3-4. If om not mistaken the bucs only have about 10 mil in cap room, before the bucs release or restructure anyone (if any) Plus, licht is backtracking his record of 43 signings. imo. its on record, the coaches on the defensive side of the ball didn’t hold their players accountable. mainly from mike smith. A 4-3 scheme, with the best available personnel on the field and on the sideline, the best available coaches can turn this unit into the best unit in football. We already saw what competent coaching can do, (duffner)

  62. StoutGospel Says:

Since all these “reporters” that can be believed about 50% of the time are being quoted, sourced…then we mine as well throw Jason LaCanfora in the mix too.

LaCanfora just said on the CBS Today pre-show that “the Bucs and Dolphins are still keeping a very close eye on JOHN (freaking) HARBAUGH”!! And, if the Ravens lose today by 4:30…it would be VERY PRUDENT of schmo Licht to at least make a call to DeCosta and Bisciotti in Baltimore, BEFORE Stephen Ross deliberately captures JOHN for the Dolphins.

WE NEED JOHN HARBAUGH. Not a 2-3 year Arians situation.

(remember that no one but Schefter and Florio, can be counted on at all, for information. Period.)

    Go Bucs!!

  63. Rod Munch Says:

Posted this fun fact before, but Winston was the 2nd leader rusher on the team and lead the team in rushing 3 times in just 9 games. Winston’s ability to scramble has always been vastly underrated, but still, you don’t want him being your lead back in 33% of his starts.

    Barber, 871 yards, 3.7avg
    Winston, 281 yards, 5.7avg
    Fitz, 152 yards, 4.2avg
    Rodgers, 106 yards, 3.2avg
    Jones, 44 yards, 2.0avg
    D-Jax, 29 yards, 4.8avg
    S Wilson, 29 yards, 4.8avg
    Humphries, 11 yards, 5.5avg

That’s your entire running game for last year.

  64. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I love the hire, if it happens. I don’t want to be “jilted at the altar” again. When I see Arians at his presser wearing a Bucs hat, I will be excited.

I hope BA does the grocery shopping”

BA wanted Ameer Abdullah from Nebraska in the 2nd round. Even called him and was on the phone with him saying that he was going to be the guy that Arizona drafted when the Detroit Lions jumped in two picks before Arizona and took Abdullah. 1 Round later, Arizona took David Johnson with no excitement.

It is a great piece of video on Amazon Prime – All or Nothing with the Arizona Cardinals. I think that is the 1st episode.

  66. Rod Munch Says:

rick – Bucs have tons of cap room, with some minor and expected deals (like trading away D-Jax, but keeping McCoy) I think I figured they’d have around $56m in cap space. I could be off by a bit since I’m doing it by memory, but they have guys like Vinny Curry is making, again off the top of my head so I could be off a bit, like $8m/year who can easily be gotten rid of without any cap hit. There’s a bunch of deals like that – and only D-Jax at $11m is a guy who I see them moving who would be a key contributor for someone.

  67. Bucs 14 Says:

I won’t believe it until I see a signed contract. Arians would be awesome, but I still remember the Parcells debacle.

As far as fixing Magoo….lolololololol. Ain’t never going to happen. Magoo is a head case. He may have the correct physical abilities but he has a mental block that keeps him an average qb. This franchise will never be great if we continue to call upon Magoo to be a franchise qb. ONLY way we become a winner is by buidling a great team around Magoo, and entrust him no to turn the ball over, rather make plays. Face it. He stinks.

  68. Rod Munch Says:

Alvin – I agree with your for you once. I keep thinking Bill Parcells and the way he’d jilt the Bucs, and they’d go right back to him a few years later and he’d do the same thing. Or how excited I was that Chip Kelly was coming in and what he’d be able to do with Freeman, only to have the Jersey Trash Schiano hired instead and call Freeman fat so many times he lead him to a life of drugs (allegedly). This would be a great hire, but I’m fully preparing for the news of Arians staying retired or someone else out of the blue announcing him as their HC.

  69. AlteredEgo Says:

BR may want to keep DJax

  70. Rod Munch Says:

StoutGospel – Florio reported that Lovie had signed a deal to bring in Rod Marinelli as his DC, which was a shock since it was given that Marinelli was taking over for Kiffin in Dallas. Anywho that was fake news. So no, Florio can not be depended on either.

  71. WalkdaPlank Says:

If Arians comes here and Winston has yet another up and down year, the Winston Mafia will have ran out of road.

However if anyone can get the most out of ATM, it’s Arians. I’m excited

  72. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    Just in bucc want smart

  73. Rod Munch Says:

Hey guys, on a different note, as we head into draft season let’s remember that you shouldn’t pick guys with studio names in the draft.

Going back a couple of years ago and there was a number of people saying the Bucs needed to draft Taco Charlton. I said I don’t care what his numbers say, what kind of combine he has, no one with a name that stupid is going to do anything in the NFL. There is a stupid name rule, or a name inappropriate rule, that always comes into play in the NFL. People don’t believe in it, yet it has yet to be wrong.

Anywho Taco Charlton is like a much less effective Noah Spence despite being drafted in the 1st round.

    Why?

Because he has a stupid name.

Why does it matter? I don’t know, but it does. Just keep that in mind going forward.

Now back to the normal Winston sucks/no he doesn’t back and forth.

  74. Canonfoder Says:

Sorrry haters… Hope is stirring in the Den.

  75. WalkdaPlank Says:

    Rod

    What about JuJu Smith-Schuster?

  76. Dooshlarue Says:

    Rod

Wow…. I agree with you on 2 things today!

I’ve actually thought the same thing about names for years, but even more so for QBs.

Also, I totally agree with you about the uniforms needing to be changed……stat.

I’m not much of a “Fancy Man”……. but who do you recommend for the new uniform design?

    Tommy Hilfiger or Tommy Bahama?

  77. TexBuc Says:

Not that my vote matters to the Glazers, but i vote a big NO on K. Smart.

  78. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

I’m a Georgia fan and hiring Kirby Goes Bananas would be a debacle. My gut is screaming that it won’t be Arians for some reason.

  79. StoutGospel Says:

Florio can ne counted on 1000%. Period. And Schefter.

Glazers get JOHN HARBAUGH!! Aww yeah.

  80. Proudbucsfan Says:

Wishful thinking here but when BA gets here he trades Djax to Pittsburgh for Brown. And then signs Bell.

  81. Proudbucsfan Says:

The uniform design is not the problem. They need to change the number format and get rid of the digital clock style numbers.

  82. SOEbuc Says:

Haters are saying if Jameis couldn’t develop with Koetter why would he be able to do it with Arians. Hahahaha.

  83. Rod Munch Says:

Dooshlarue – Hugo Boss all the way… they know how to make a sharp looking uniform that will endure the test of time.

  84. Rod Munch Says:

WalkdaPlank – If the Steelers are going to trade the Steelers for something then that should be an insane package for Brown, Bell and Tomlin as a package. I don’t see any case where the Steelers are dumping Juju when he’s set to be their top WR if Brown really is gone.

  85. Rod Munch Says:

SOEbuc – Also Winston was 5th in the NFL in QBR this last year… that’s really good, in particular considering that Winston is the only QB in the NFL playing in a 1970s deep ball offense.

  86. Buc believer Says:

A guy with the name of ROD MUNCH is talking about a stupid name rule??? LMAO okkkk.

  87. WalkdaPlank Says:

I wasn’t saying trade for him, just that he has a funny name and doesn’t suck.

    JuJu lol

  88. rrsrq Says:

Yeah, shoulda went after Mack last year, but his first year and first four games of this year was nothing to write home about, go a new coach for the Colts and see what happened. Maybe, just maybe, we see that same from ROJO. I am a Mack fan, he is a SRQ (Sarasota) man (BookerNation)

  89. SchlomieBarmitzahCircumScissorStein Says:

The current uniform is terrible. Nothing classic or traditional about it. That is a big problem. Everything about football has a traditional aspect. The design of the uniform should follow suit.

  90. JIMMY T Says:

    Hey MTM
JUST STUPID! Jameis IS OUR QB & if u can’t see that and see how good he is then it’s only about HATE not ability! One thing for sure ARIANS can coach ANY QB so if Jameis is hurt or has a bad game then GUESS WHAT THE BACKUP COMES IN! So what am I missing MTM? Geez give the Jameis HATE a rest! Like it or not Jameis will be at OTA’s and then training camp in July! Whatever happens after that will be up to OUR NEW COACH!! He is a two time coach of the year! Cards went 8-8 when both starter & backup went down w injuries so be happy we r FINALLY GOING TO HAVE A great HC, a great DC & OC, a commitment to the run and a GREAT COACHING STAFF

  91. Bucsfanman Says:

Arians would be a great hire IMO. He’s got instant credibility and, if anyone can “fix” Jameis, it’s Arians.
My only question would be whether the HC is selecting personnel, or the GM? If Arians is the guy, they better let him buy the groceries.
I still don’t understand the retention of Licht. BUT, I guess I better get used to it.
Bring on Bruce! Go Bucs! Go Hokies!

  92. Bucsfanman Says:

JIMMY T- Don’t read into the “fix” comment. We’ve had our disagreements but this is a case where if they bring in Arians, Jameis will have a HC capable of better assessing JW’s weaknesses and strengths. He will bring in QUALITY coordinators, and most importantly, change the culture.
A better Jameis is good for all Buc fans. Most of all, a better coach will get the best of every player on this football TEAM.
Happy New Year! Go Bucs 2019!

  93. Bucwad Says:

They gotta interview Richards the Rooney Rule

  94. Geno Says:

So Winston was 22nd in the NFL in raw passer rating this year. That passer rating statistic has been around for 50 years. I think in some senses it is out dated.

ESPN created their QBR evaluation in 2011. It was meant to give a more accurate measurement of a quarterback’s play over the old standard of “passer rating”. Winston was 5th in raw QBR rating and 8th based upon opponent in QBR this year.

Is the QBR already outdated? ESPN when they created the QBR stated that an average QB would have a 50 rating. Yet this year there were 26 QB’s above the 50 QBR rating. There were 30 above 47.9.

P.S. Last year Winston was 18th in QBR behind Blake Bortles, Josh Mcown, Tyrod Taylor and Marcus Mariota.

  95. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

What I don’t get….is that no word of a trade has leaked out of the Bucs or the Cardinals organizations.

So either the Cards are letting him go for free, or the Tuesday deadline will be tight.
