Key Hire

January 18th, 2019

DL coach Kacy Rodgers.

Joe hated to see former defensive line coach Brentson Buckner go. All signs point to him going to the Raiders.

But it seems new Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians found a key coach to replace Buckner, and that is Kacy Rodgers. Before coming to the Bucs, Rodgers was the Jets defensive coordinator for then-coach Todd Bowles, who is now the Bucs defensive coordinator.

Joe wrote about Rodgers previously but it’s time to bring out his stats.

Rodgers, who was the defensive line coach of the Cowboys under Bill Parcells, has had a solid if not strong line just about everywhere he has been. In a decade as a defensive line coach (three with the Cowboys and seven in Miami), only once has Rodgers’ defensive line finished in the bottom half of the league in sacks.

Here is where Rodgers’ defensive fronts ranked.

2005: 14th.
2006: 19th.
2007: 3rd.
2008: 8th.
2009: 3rd.
2010: 10th.
2011: 10th.
2012: 7th.
2013: 11th.
2014: 16th.

Among the coaches Rodgers worked under were Parcells, Wade Phillips, Mike Zimmer, Tony Sparano and Bowles.

Joe is of the mind Rodgers can get the Bucs into the top-half of the NFL in sacks in 2019, which would have Bucs doing cartwheels down Gulf-to-Bay Blvd. in Clearwater. Tampa Bay ranked 19th this season.

Here is another coach that other teams wanted….I’m encouraged that Arians & Bowles are attracting accomplished coaches to work with them…..we will see.

Accomplished tenured coaches at top (mostly) and a youthful mix for future years (Leftwich, Grimm), I dig it.

Damn I can’t remember being this pumped for the season to start!! Maybe the year after we won the Super Bowl though….

Quiet a few pro bowl Dlineman at Miami when he was there so let’s see what he can do.

So I am in moderation forever ?

Sometimes it takes hours to get reviewed
Been pretty loyal here for long time
People say much worse things then I do

Wait a minute DID Arians know Rogers before. Isn’t this the type of guy complain about “only hires his friends, buddies”. Like all these coaches don’t know each other at this level. Especially the ones who run similar schemes.

Buckner as all fire and no fuel. He talked a good game. He led a terrible to mediocre one at best. Yes, the Bucs D-Line played better this year. But was that because of JPP and Beau Allen? Or was it Buckner? A good coach would have gotten more out of Curry, Golston, and yes, Spence. Buckner is Meh at best.

One of the best characteristics of this new coaching staff is that several have been prior NFL head coaches and coordinators and are now position coaches. That makes usually for a pretty concentrated, potent coaching staff (Yes, Mike Smith and Leslie Frazier aside).

the buckner hype was one of the most laughable events that took on an entire life on these pages. the guy was out of work for a reason when bucs hired him and he did nothing with the bucs. jpp being a man was helped bucs dline…

  13. TOM Says:

Buckner leaving no big deal. Would have rather seen them keep Duffner & possibly Monken. One new coach that worries me is Leftwitch, but I’m sure as we all are that BA knows what he’s doing.

  14. tmaxcon Says:

joe, if you believe so highly in Buckner and he is such an unquestioned great coach why did your mancrush have one of the worst seasons in his piss poor career.

If you believe success at the NFL level equates success as a coach, you need to change your brand of whiskey.

…That makes usually I would say lazy and sloppy, the records of this guy average 10th to 11th in NFL, that WAS his records, the new one is going to be equally or worst. No excitement here. An other good buddy of BA, they going to have great time in Tampa, golfing and stuff…..
    more indication LOVE S 2.0 scenario…Sad!
