Reedy To The Rescue

December 15th, 2018

Pretend quarterback.

For once, people are going to write about Bucs receiver Bernard Reedy and it will have nothing to do with how he played for Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg or drives wheelchair shuttle vans to help needy residents get around.

For once, Joe is going to write about how Reedy is helping the Bucs on the field, not just their image off the field.

You see the Bucs face Lamar Jackson on Sunday, the rookie Crows quarterback who may be the Crows’ most dangerous runner, sort of like a young Jameis Winston.

(That’s how sad the Bucs’ running game is; a quarterback not known for his wheels is the most productive runner on the team.)

Anyone who watched Jackson in college at Louisville saw the dude is a freak. Think of Michael Vick. The first-round draft pick of Baltimore is a threat all over the field, not just with his arm. So to prepare the Bucs’ defense to face a running quarterback like Jackson, coach Dirk Koetter turned to Reedy to be the scout quarterback this week in practice.

In his weekly appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio last night on “Late Hits” co-hosted by Gil Brandt and Alex Marvez, Koetter noted both Bobo Wilson and Reedy were scout quarterbacks but Reedy got the vast majority of reps against the Bucs defense.

Why was that? Was it because he was a better passer than Bobo? No, Koetter said. It was because when Reedy spent time with the Belicheats last season, he was a scout team quarterback for the very reason he was this week: Belicheat was preparing his Patriots for a running quarterback.

(Koetter wasn’t sure who or what team Reedy was helping the Patriots prepare against but looking at when Reedy was on the Patriots’ roster last season, Joe’s going to guess Reedy practiced the part of Tyrod Taylor or Marcus Mariota).

So since Reedy had experience as a scout team quarterback, he was ordered to play Jackson this week in practice.

We will find out Sunday if that move pays off at all.

Strange way to get typecasted. I hope this kids gets a real shot during game time one day and shines.

  2. Mike Says:

Hell, let him play now, shut down Evans for the season- it’s practically meaningless anyway- in fact let griffin play, they already know they are keeping Winston short of a crazy trade offer

  3. Lamarcus Says:

    Finally a d*** adjustment!!

  4. SB Says:

Lamar Jackson will be better than Michael Vick.

  5. Pooh Pooh Says:

Here’s an idea. How about you put Reedy on the active roster and design a formation where he lines up at quarterback. You know to keep defenses on their toes or something. I mean Ryan Griffin has been holding a roster spot for years for absolutely no purpose.

Speaking of Bernard Reedy, with his incredible shiftiness and great short bursts of speed…. I always thought that maybe we could find a way to utilize him in the short passing game with routes that could break him into the clear.

  7. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So, just curious as to how many TDs Reedy had in practice this week?

  8. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    ^^ @Scotty

    Probably 77. lmao!

    just kiddin

Demon- we don’t have a short passing game, lol. You would think that with our O-line and their jailbreak style of blocking we would run quick slants and screens (to RBs). Nope not Koetter, longer developing routes while Jameis (or Fitz) is running for his life.

    @jjbucfan

So well said, man. Sadly true. Sigh….

Damn, that is like the 3rd time that I have typed “sigh” this morning, LOL
Life as a Bucs fan sometimes, huh?

  11. TOM Says:

Jackson will fade in a year or two just like RG III.

you gotta love a mike vick reference brings back memories Mike vick the dog fighter and his hypocritical pal dungy the clown. what a great pc moment for tv but still does not change the fact the loser could not win in the post season

  13. unbelievable Says:

Well considering we’ve allowed flat-footed old men like Drew Brees and Matt Ryan run for first downs and touchdowns left and right against us, I’m not gonna be too optimistic about containing Jackson.

But Duffner has been getting through to these guys better, so maybe, just maybe, there is a glimmer of hope…

  14. Owlykat Says:

Duff shutout Brees in the first half from TDs and dropped the running game too so so am very impressed by what he can accomplish. If we had a good OL to keep getting 1st downs in the second half to rest our D we would have won.
