“There Is No Seat”

November 7th, 2018

No need to look over shoulder.

For one national NFL scribe, talking about Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking coach Dirk Koetter and his job security is a waste of time.

That’s because this columnist believes the only thing left is a press release issued by the Bucs.

Yesterday on “Pro Football Talk Live,” seen by intelligent NFL fans weekday mornings on NBC Sports Network, hosted by the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, there was a segment about coaches being on the hot seat.

A great deal of time was spent on Vance Joseph and John Harbaugh and Mike McCarthy when Florio broke off the chatter with his guest, L.L. Bean-wearing, Second Amendment abolitionistMike Florio-arguingparrot-insensitive, chewing-with-his-mouth-open, soup-gulping, California train-romancinganti-football proliferationouthouse-admiringairline-nappingsteerage-flyingYogi Berra-worshipingurinal picture-takingvideo game-playingTaylor Swift-listeningpickpocket-thwartingBucs-uniform-frowningAllie-LaForce-smittenBig-Ten-Network-hatingpedestrian-bumpingolive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerking, craft beer-chugging, cricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïvebaseball-box-score-readingNPR-honkfilthy-hotel-stayingfight-instigatingbarista-training social activist Peter King, star of NBC Sports fame.

Florio said some coaches’ names were not mentioned because everyone who follows the NFL knows their seats are on fire. Florio included Koetter in this group as the show was heading to a commercial break.

Then, in the background, you could hear King’s cheery voice.

“It is burned already, Mike,” King said of Koetter’s job status. “There is no seat. He’s standing in a corner.”

Maybe so, but “this Joe” isn’t ready to shovel dirt on Koetter’s grave quite yet, though it does look gloomy for him with everything that is swirling around One Buc Palace.

The Bucs have three winnable games the next three weeks. If the Bucs can win those three, this entire conversation is flipped.

Of course, with one of the worst defenses to ever take an NFL field in the 99-year history of the league, that’s a tall task even with such potent offensive weapons. The offense has to play just about perfect to outscore its own defense.

The past two weeks have proven that’s a very tall task.

    These nicknames are hilarious 😄

    Dirk is fone.

    That’s done, with a f at the beginning for fired.

    Fone sounds like fun so that way we don’t have to be sad about it!

    I just made that up.

  3. Rod Munch Says:

    The Bucs defense is giving up nearly 35 points a game, only two teams in NFL history have averaged scoring more than 35 points a game, so the Bucs will have to have a historic offense to overcome this historic defense.

    Dirk does have the possibility of winning the next three games, which would make the team 6-5, but then those final 5 games all look like surefire L’s.

    But hey, you play the games, so we’ll see what happens – but if I was Dirk I’d have my flight booked for the evening of Dec 30th to take me somewhere really far away.

    Fonegry

  5. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

    It’s funny how Florio still holds a grudge on Dirk for holding a grudge on Florio. You can tell he is bitter towards the turd Koetter.

    Dirk is done, sorry man I wanted and had hoped you could turn this around but you have just added to the steaming pile of embarrassment we have already been enduring for the last 15 years.

    Already looking to next year in November is just sad and pathetic. If anyone has any hope left, please tell me why I shouldn’t be looking to next season?
    At least we have a franchise quar…
    Go YUCS!!

  6. Larry Says:

    At the post Carolina press conference, Koetter looked like a deer in the head lights. He has no idea how the fix the problems with the Bucs. Some coaches, like Norv Turner, are very good assistant coaches but just can’t get the job done as a head coach. I believe Koetter is one of those people. Just like he did with Doug Martin and Mike Smith, Koetter let Winston play when he should not have. Because of his turnovers, Winston lost 2 games this season that could have been won. In your 4th season, no NFL QB should have this many turnovers. The Bucs may keep Winston but he will never be a top 10 NFL QB, just like Koetter will never be a top 10 NFL HEAD coach!!!

  7. Kansas95Buc Says:

    Listen, if the coach can’t come with a scheme to put his players in positions to win the game, refuse to address the weak links of the team, play the game not to lose instead of playing to win the game as Herm Edward say and lose the game anyhow and the team as a whole seem to be regressing…anywhere else you might get canned mid season. I just want my team to win again…

  10. Defense Rules Says:

    @Joe … “The Bucs have three winnable games the next three weeks. If the Bucs can win those three, this entire conversation is flipped.” The ‘conversation’ isn’t flipped at all Joe. IT’S THE SAME CONVERSATION WE HAVE EVERY YEAR … Bucs aren’t a good team, period. We could win all 3 of those games, be 6-5 at that point, and guess what: we’d STILL be a bad team. Beating the Redskins, Giants & 49ers won’t turn us into the darlings of the NFL. Even IF the Bucs managed to win 3 of the last 5 games in addition to winning the next 3 and finish 9-7 (ya, right), guess what: we’d STILL be a bad team.

    These players may not know how to play winning football, but they’re not stupid. They know that their HC is dead-man-walking (and so does he I’d venture). They know this coaching staff will join him in the unemployment line, and (hopefully) so will this GM. And they also know that a BUNCH of them will be shown the door at the end of the season. That’s a VERY unhealthy environment from their perspectives I’m sure, considering that this is THEIR chosen career … and THEIR future … at stake. Come next spring, Freddie Martino may have the best gig of all in ‘The Lounge’.

  11. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    Dirk should have been fired last season along with the entire coaching staff.

  12. Hawk Says:

    Defense Rules *nailed it*! I agree 100%. Also, I believe that the offensive players have lost faith in Koetter in the same way that Dungys’ defense lost faith in him. One part of the team does not want to want to play their hearts out every *year*, only to have the other part give everything back.
    Koetter should have already stopped in at his grocery store to pick up some empty boxes.

  13. 1sparkybuc Says:

    Keep Koetter. Overhaul the defense.

  14. BucHead5588 Says:

    It is the Defense just watching highlights from the last game you can see there is no Fight in the secondary to get off there blocks it’s like they want everyone in front of them to do it it was a Wrap once we lost Kwon no one told hold people accountable to get in there asses who is doing that on the Defense now that Kwon is gone Give the Kid Vita a Shot I’m not saying he is better than James ATM but it also Take DT a lot longer to Devleope in this league an thinking he Had no training camp really Just Thrown into the Fire it really Kills me to say this kuz he is one of my Favorite players an I feel bad for Him how Bucs really wasted his Career the Bucs should let this man go so he cAn go to a playoff team But LVD looks like he lost a step I feel like all our LBs been playing slower an I have not seen GMC get off once this season he used to be so quick off the ball there losing steps Dam

  15. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

    Speaking of seats………..I doubt you’ll see many Bucs jersey’s in the stands after watching the last 5 games.

    Who’s willing to spend $65-$100 per for nose bleed seats at this point?

    Good luck filling the lower bowl of between $115-$200 per, sorry I can’t even justify it. Back in the day i would go thinking “this will be the game they win and turn it around” but we know better now don’t we or at least I do, lol.

    It’s a Bucs life.

  16. Dre Says:

    Joe the bucs need to win games against good teams too … not happening .. wouldn’t be shocked if the giants beat us

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Very well said, @Larry. — I have always liked Dirk Koetter, but I saw the same thing in Dirk’s eyes after that Carolina game. He looked shell-shocked, like he really just didn’t know what to do anymore…….. almost resigned to things.
    Sad to see.
  18. LakeLand Says:
    Dirk Koetter knows he gone
    Right now, he’s auditioning for an OC position next season
    Trying to score as many ‘ garbage’ points as possible
  19. Not there yet Says:
    Dirk is done and I love how Media covering this team are saying “3 winnable games” are coming up.
    Even the media in this town has a loser mentality. So lets get this straight. Your saying it will make the glazers happy to beat redskins and 2 other teams more horrible than us? That’s a complete joke. All the money spent and your saying dirk might keep his job because he can beat the worst teams in the league while getting beat down by contenders and can’t compete in his own division? The logic is mind blowing. I hope people like you aren’t in the glazers ears
  20. meh Says:
    GM, coach, and QB all should have been dymped last offseason. Instead we get another year of garbage.
  21. stpetebucsfan Says:
    I like Duff and Buckner but let’s face it…anybody associated with that defense is truly suspect. If you run down the attributes of good and bad defenses…we didn’t check a single good thing…and we didn’t miss checking every bad attribute a D can have. To say we were awful is an understatement.
    If we’re honest it’s clear that Smitty was not as bad as we feared.
    The players ARE bad. To be technically correct I should say they are playing badly! Whether it’s a talent situation they can’t help or just no heart and bad attitudes. If they have the talent and they are playing like this? CLEAN HOUSE!!!! If we’re that short on talent…get to work. Find a Director of Football Ops so he can get a GM and THEY can start working the roster top to bottom…coaches to scouts.
  22. Joe Says:
    If we’re honest it’s clear that Smitty was not as bad as we feared.
    Might be worse. Hard to get any pass when you crafted what could be the worst defense in 99 years. Not like this is a fluke. He ran the worst defense in the NFL last year and the Bucs actually bought better players!
  23. 813bucboi Says:
    stick a fork in him!!!!
    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!
  24. doolnutts Says:
    The way the offense has been it really wouldn’t shock me if we just fired the entire defensive staff and kept Koetter on. Fan favorite Tony Dungy was 24-24 in his first 3 seasons with the bucs. What kept him on is obvious… The defense was lights out and was only getting better.
    Koetter has a shot to match Dungy or do better by a game if he wins out(Not happening but for argument’s sake) For me this teams main issue remains the defense and I would fire every single defensive coach at the end of the season.
    What is interesting to me is that Fitz and Winston are basically the same turnover machine and yet this offense is still the top of the league. This means Koetter’s scheme is actually working in the modern NFL and I think to mess with that would be a mistake. And for those who are going to give me the “BUT ITS MONKEN THAT CALLS THE PLAYS” nonsense give me a break. It is Koetters playbook, Koettters terminology, Koetters depth chart and player usage. That would be like saying Tony Dungy had nothing to do with the Tampa 2 and it was all Monken…
  26. Mike Johnson Says:
    Koetter’s no idiot. I bet he’s got himself a nice little college job already lined up.
  27. LakeLand Says:
    You know this team is pathetic
    When people are saying
    We have ” Three winnable games” coming up
    Shouldn’t EVERY game be winnable?
  28. Frank Pillow Says:
    Dirk will make a great foil for Mike Sherman and the Montreal Als in his next job as HC of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers or Calgary Stampeders.
  29. pelbuc Says:
    Meanwhile LVD and Kwon are arguing with Sapp on tweeter. SMH!!
  30. Pryda Says:
    3 winnable games you think we can win 3 games lol we’d be lucky to win one ! We gonna lose come Sunday and 100% on Koetter
