Payneful Comparison

November 8th, 2018

One of Redskins rookie Da’Ron Payne’s three sacks

The 320-pound, rookie defensive tackle drafted one spot after Vita Vea has met or exceeded high expectations for the Redskins.

He’s a key cog in a top-10 defense known for its physicality.

Vea has yet to blossom, candid Dirk Koetter explained today.

“He just hasn’t had much production, “Koetter said. “You know, he’s giving good effort. He has to bet off blocks better. He has to get off blocks and end up gettin’ in on plays. I mean, it’s not about effort or anything like that. It just, he’s having a hard time getting off blocks. He’s getting some penetration but he’s having a hard time getting off blocks. So, everybody progresses at their own rate.”

Koetter added that Vea’s athleticism is evident as it was on his college film but production is what matters.

Payne, of course, will line up in the Redskins’ 3-4 defense on Sunday at the Den of Depression. Through eight games, Payne has three sacks, 16 solo tackles a forced fumble and a pass defensed. Vea has one solo tackle, and a pile of zeros on the rest of his stat line through five games.

Joe knows Vea had to work his way back from a two-month calf injury that cost him all of training camp and three regular season games. However, Joe is troubled that Vea might have played his best game of the season in his very first game at Chicago in Week 4. He doesn’t seem to better.

A couple of ex-Bucs are calling him “Velcro” Vea. So far, the name sticks.

Joe is not down on Vea. But noow it’s time for him to man up and have a strong second half. If he can’t do that, well, Jason Licht might ask Santa for a case of Tums.

***Derrick Brooks really opens some eyes here talking about effort.*** … It’s a new TAMPA TWO, presented by Caldeco Air Conditioning and Heating. Another can’t-miss production from The Identity Tampa Bay and Joe.

psh I’ll take my NT playing next to Jonathan Allen over GMC any day of the week.

  2. Bucamania Says:

Another big draft miss. Sure he may get a little better but he looks terribly slow and has zero awareness of where the ball or QB is.

  3. Andre Says:

Just throw the whole organization away please and start from scratch

  4. Kansas95Buc Says:

or sell the team to someone who wants to win. damn I miss Mr. Glazer

  5. GhostofSchiano Says:

From what I have seen Vea gets great penetration, constantly pushes his guy backwards……but then that’s it…..as the play usually runs right past him….as he stands there still locked up with a lineman. Then he is out of camera range. Then he is standing at the line of scrimmage…sucking oxygen like an Olympic sprinter……just to do the same play over again.

    ITS A BUCS LIFE

  6. El Buco Realisto Says:

The “real” fans are not looking forward for another 3-4 defense that will wreck havoc on our O-line, while the sheep say that GMC is unstoppable and just needs more help!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

The ONLY positive from the first several picks in this years draft was flipping a 3rd for JPP. The top 3 picks Vea, Jones and Stewart look awful. If Licht’s Out survives past 2018 then he will outlive cockroaches in case of a nuclear war/attack.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

Not going to pile on Vita, but again, I think he is what he is, a 3-4 run stuffing NT who ran a nice 40 “for a guy his size” and then people said he can be a pass rushing DT without any evidence of that. College production I also don’t get, he averaged 3.5 sacks a year in college and only 5 TTL – those are not the stats I generally associate with a guy who is expected to be an NFL pass rusher. Vita is being hampered, in my opinion, by unrealistic expectations and playing out of position and in a defense that doesn’t take advantage of what he is, a run stuffing 3-4 NT. The issue is he has to be more than a run stuffing 3-4 NT to be worth the pick.

As for rookie production I put nothing into it, rookie DT’s rarely do anything. Even Warren Sapp only had 3 sacks as a rookie. But at the same time, unlike Dirk, when I’ve watched Vita I haven’t seen much – he doesn’t dominate and he generally looks slow, like a run stuffing 3-4 NT would look.

Anyways I hope he is that pass rusher they claim he is – personally I don’t see it and didn’t like the pick at all – but I’ve love to look like an idiot for doubting him.

  9. Tom S. Says:

Wasn’t Jason Licht this draft guru?

Which is worse: 2018: Vita Vea, Ronald Jones, MJ Stewart
2016: VHIII, Noah Spence, Roberto Aguayo

It’s close to me, but when you add Ryan Smith and Caleb Benenoch to 2016 becomes even worse so my vote is 2016.

  10. Dom is gone... Licht? Says:

Other than Evans and OJ name a Great pick???? Game changer ??? Someone that has changed the direction of this team???

  11. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Can’t do it, Dom is gone…Evans was slotted there and OJ fell into the Bucs lap as well.

  12. Gruden4President Says:

    Kwon alexander

  13. Gruden4President Says:

Kwon Alexander, adam humphries, Chris Godwin, Cam Brate, Ali Marpet. He’s great at drafting offense, its defense where hes absolutely clueless

  14. BuccaneEric75 Says:

The rest of this season means nothing. Licht, Koetter and co. are out no matter what and we’ll be starting over again. Back to normal, I guess.

  15. Season Is Over Says:

Who chooses the wrong player for the wrong system at 12 overall? Wth is going on here? This is after the other clown drafts in years past while your job is on the line because your team is so horrible. Then you double up with the worst RB in the draft for the second year in a row at the top of the second round. Haha. The NFC South teams love Jason Licht. He has taken the Bucs out of the division without them even having to do anything. Why is this team counting on a rookie anyway? I love how the media ignores the real issues.

  16. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Licht give you a hint stay in the South SEC/ACC you will do really good w your pics, the PAC12 sux, just where ur first 2 pics played and obv they sux, and you demolished this organization, good work

  17. NO FEAR... Says:

LOOK IF THERE WASN’T NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TEAM WELL WE WOULDN’T BE IN THIS SPOT RIGHT !!!SO , SOMEONE GOT TO ANSWER FOR THIS MESS. AND I THINK EVERYONE GOT TO GO THIS TIME , START OVER FROM THE GROUND UP , THIS TIME I HOPE THE GLAZERS PICK THE RIGHT PEOPLE IF NOT WILL HAVE ANOTHER 3 OR 4 YEARS OF A CRAPPY TEAM AGAIN , THEN THE GLAZER’S NEED TO SALE BECAUSE THEIR JUST COKA COLA COWBOY’S !!!! !!!

  18. Kobe Faker Says:

“Whats very disheartening is that with the damage Gump has done to this roster, no leading candidate HC nor GM will view Tampa as a promising position

Kobe has no doubt Tampa will create the least interest among all the HC/GM vacancies”

“Kobe really hopes the Glazer Boys dont go the college route…

    Head Coach Dabo?”

    Kobe Faker

  19. Warrenfb12 Says:

I’m so tired of seeing guys picked after our guy playing so much better. Or you know, teams that take 2nd rounders and actually have them active for football games…Licht needs to go man.

  20. LakeLand Says:

BJ Hill the NT that the Giants drafted in the 3rd round
The pick they got from the Bucs for JPP
Is playing a a million times better than Vita Vea

He has 24 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 3 TFL, 1 PD

  21. Mike in MO Says:

Why do the Bucs waste their draft picks on overrated PAC-12 players? I would stay away from anyone coming out of that weak conference.

  22. Firrrreee Licht Says:

Whoever said Pac12 is 100%. The Vea pick was the ultimate Screwjob by Licht. I’m convinced at this point that Koetter and Licht both knew they were out and wanted to sink the whole pirate ship. From the infighting with the fans. To the bad picks. To taking Jameis off of the stadium banners and benching him.

  23. Firrrreee Licht Says:

This situation has gotten to the Glazer level… that’s serious. They do not like to be embarrassed. Plus the Glazers have already dealt with the Glazers Out campaign at Man U.

  24. Noles Says:

He didn’t draft Brate or Humphries I believe they were UFA pick ups & you named 5 players over 5 years. That is a terrible draft track record again 2 were UFA. Mike Evans & Howard who fell into his lap were his best picks but he whiffed on so many other 1st rd JW, VH,VEA. That kind of hit rate in 1st rd is horrible. Rd 2 misses R Jones, MJ Stewart, Aguayo, Justin Evans, Spence, ASJackwagon…. Way too many misses early.. Licht is only good a drinking beer please fire this CLOWN!!

  25. JabooBuc Says:

I gotta say I just didn’t see it when they drafted him. I got the idea but not the player. Not sure how you take that guy over someone like Payne or James. Simply no comparison in my book.

  26. Destinjohnny Says:

Being a bama fan first I would have taken him over vea all day
But i do think Derwin was the pick
Like I have said 197 times on this site
This was the draft that will get Jason fired.
People piled up on me when I said it.
    Do u hear me now?????

  27. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs cut Cam Brate and Hump

They was just lucky other teams didn’t add them to their 53

  28. Season Is Over Says:

What is the difference between this guy and Akeem Spence? Spence never made McCoy better or vice versa.

  29. richardtyson Says:

We need to stop winning meaningless games and start getting higher draft picks. That is the only way we will get better with the GM and scouts we have. No more of this trading back bullspit. Enough with not holding players accountable. It’s as though Jason is forcing Dirk to play his drafts pucks as a way of saying his draft picks are serviceable. Either hire a competent GM or start tanking for the top picks year after year until we’re competitive.

  30. richardtyson Says:

It’s was nice to see a real team beat the snot out of the stinking panthers tonight.

  31. DB55 Says:

    Joe

My friend it gives me great pleasure to read this. Truth is any one of the following draft picks would have been more productive for us.

To add insult to injury licht screwed up the second round even worse.
    Rojo over Harold Landry
MJ Stewart over Donte Jackson – this alone should be licht’s death sentence

  32. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

This discussion IMHO is all academic. ALL our coaches and our General Manager will surely be gone next year, maybe even sooner.

  33. joestang Says:

We never get a player that over performs we only get players that dont perform. Licht is a terrible GM, he cannot evaluate talent. Vea is a total bust. I bet you cant even get a 7th round pick for Vea. RoJo is worth nothing
