Lavonte David: “It’s Been Hard On Jameis”

November 21st, 2018

Teammate talks

America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, stayed benched to start Sunday’s game in New Jersey despite horrendous performances by Ryan Fitzpatrick against the Panthers and Redskins.

That was hard on Jameis, Lavonte David told Joe in the unhappy Bucs postgame locker room.

David was a rare spectator against the Giants, nursing his bad knee and wearing street clothes.

Joe’s already shared plenty of David’s commentary on the team, and here’s what he said when asked how he saw Jameis handle getting benched even after the Bucs offense scored three points against the Skins.

“I think it’s been hard on Jameis,” David said. “Me knowing Jameis personally, he’s a competitor. He wants to win and he wants to be a part of it.

“It was tough. He was a guy who, you know, we put our faith in and then had his job taken away from him. That could happen to anybody at any position, but unfortunately is was the quarterback position. I’m sure he was hurt by it. But Jameis is a great guy, a leader. He helped Fitz when he was up [as  the starter]. Jameis didn’t let up. He just continued to be the same guy, which was easy for him.”

Candid stuff from David.

And you can see video of Jameis Winston’s Wednesday news conference on the JoeBucsFan home page, where he looked like a guy who was slightly rattled by his benching and the meaning of it all.

Yes, Jameis was calm and cool, but he wasn’t his typical energetic and uplifting self. Joe thought his answers made him look like a guy whose extraordinary confidence and enthusiasm was taken down half a notch by the toll of this season.

    Awwwwwwww…………..Poor Poor baby!!!!!!!!!

  2. DaPostman Says:

What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.

  3. DBS Says:

Oh STFU David. You are all playing like Sh!t. And a shame most of you can’t be benched. Because you are putting a big hurting on all the Fans!!

  4. 813bucboi Says:

the only folks that are energetic and enthusiastic while being 3-7 are losers…..(cough cough GMC)…

players should be pissed off and not in a good mood…..their losers yet again…

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  5. Season Is Over Says:

Haha. No one cares what David thinks about anyone. Especially Mr. Magoo. He has been a non-factor since Schiano got fired. It has been nearly a decade of David, Magoo and all these perennial losers in our face. If any Buc fan that remembers the Bucs D of the 90s laughs at these so called football players they trot out there now. When you got a first down against the Bucs you were doing something. Now teams pad their stats against invisible players that are only thankful that the team signs their check. Utterly useless.

  6. Jean Lafitte Says:

again …..it has to be remembered ….Jameis caused his own angst.

The face let everyone down ..end of story

play smarter football …we’re watching you. …decisions need to be made and you have the ability to prove why you should be our face.

  7. Lamarcus Says:

    And yes it has.

  8. Doctor Stroud Says:

Walter Benjamin once wrote: “[The successful person] is always prepared. Even in failure, he is composed. He is not easily discouraged. [He] considers his struggles to be a kind of sport, and he approaches them as he would a game. He contends with life’s difficulties in a relaxed and pleasant manner. He keeps a clear head even when things go wrong. And please believe me when I tell you: successful people are never sore losers; they’re the ones who don’t whine and give up after every failure. Indeed, they are the ones who keep their chins up, weather life’s misfortunes, and live to fight another day. Who will be first to fail the test? The timid and the faint of heart. The whiners, the complainers. He who goes to the exam cool and calm is already halfway there. Such people are in great demand today. That is, I believe, the secret of success.”

  9. Kansas95Buc Says:

Winston, JPP with maybe 5 other players are the only ones who want to win on this team. I wish he would go rouge and just start calling plays biased on what he see from the defense

I wish he would go rouge and just start calling plays biased on what he see from the defense.

Do you mean like throwing the ball 55 yards down the field on first down with :23 seconds left to lose the game?

  11. BucsBandit Says:

It SHOULD BE hard on Jameis. He should be clinically DEPRESSED at this point in this career…

    – On the field, he has been a Turnover Machine. He has single-handedly lost his team games by giving away the football. He also lacks a consistent deep ball to keep Defenses honest. He makes poor decisions and appears to have a low football IQ.

    – Off the field, after a horrendous personal conduct past while at FSU, one he was lucky to have escaped if he truly was guilty of what he was accused of, was still able to redeem himself and get drafted #1 Overall in the NFL Draft… what of the biggest honors in all of sports…

And what does he proceed to do after signing a massive contract that made him a multi-millionaire, and after having the Tampa community forgive him and accept him with open arms?

He allegedly sexually assaults an Uber driver.

So it has been HARD on Jameis??? PUHLEASE. He has brought everything onto himself.

It will be a Great Day in Tampa Bay when Jameis is no longer on the team.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m sure it was very hard on him…..have a little empathy guys…..(not sympathy)

What disturbs me is that with the benching for turning it over….Jameis still was quite reckless with the ball….especially with that fumble on the 1 yard line on 2nd and goal……
Which tells me it is simply his nature and he has absolutely no control over it.
We will just have to accept that with him…..or not.

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

Trust me #54 it’s been tough on Buccaneer fans everywhere.

  14. LakeLand Says:

No playoffs for 11 straight years

It must be hard for the Yucs fans
I feel for their 50 fans

  15. Reach87 Says:

Where are the Bucs fans at? How about the humans? Sad. You don’t deserve a winner cause you hate everyone who’s trying to make it happen. Go Bucs!

  16. El Buco Realisto Says:

I wish LVD is more clear!!!!! Was hard when he lost his job and benched because of turning the ball over way to much against the softest defenses on the schedule or when he lost his job and was suspended for assaulting a woman??????????

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Trench War Says:

I have empathy for the mess that Jameis has created for himself but you reap what you sow.

I mainly have sympathy for all the fans that have had to endure yet another losing season.

  18. WalkdaPlank Says:

He was benched for his lack of an ability to secure the football.

On Sunday he showed that, while he without question talented, he STILL has a lack of an ability to secure the football.

Jameis learned nothing from being benched.

  19. Rob Says:

I, for one, like the toned down Jameis. It’s one think to be confident, but he needs to be confident and mature. His mindset of overconfidence is the source of his turnover problem, and would like to see him talk less and let his play speak for him. A fine balance…I would NOT give up on this guy. Will be another QB that will come back to haunt us. The right teacher will make a world of difference. Bruce Ariens would be great. Even as a consultant…

  20. Knoxville Bucs Fan Says:

So many Tactless fans in Tampa. Ignorant. #AMERICA’SQUARTERBACKJAMEISWINSTON GOBUCS!

  21. Bucnjim Says:

He would have made it easier on himself by admitting he couldn’t remember what happened in his case LAST year! We love to speculate how Winston will be so much better than Freeman in the future but no one wants to address the biggest mistake of all. Winston could have and should have put all this behind him in 2017.

  22. Trench War Says:

    Bucnjim

I do so agree, had he informed the club early. …but he chose to hide it probably on the advice of his own father. Had he just came clean early this might never had gone public.

  23. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Still waiting for all these Buc players actions to match their words!

  24. 813bucboi Says:

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!!!!

    even you @realist!!!!!!!!!!!…..lol

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  25. Bucnjim Says:

Even if it did go public all he had to say was actually probably the truth. Hey I CANT REMEMBER! 2017 was already a Sh!T show and long over early in the year. Could have taken a six game suspension and still been back for the last two games last year.

  26. JIMMY T Says:

bro are you freaking out over a hail mary, which typically doesn’t have a high completion rate?

  29. Kansas95Buc Says:

    @813

    happy thanksgiving to you too

  30. Season Is Over Says:

The man was getting hammered drunk, allegedly with a friend who was convicted and sentenced to how many years in jail for rape? Are we just supposed to forget this beyond ridiculous lapse of judgement that no one called him out on? You always wondered why the identity of the third passenger was so secretive. For anyone that hasn’t, look this man up.

Winston is the person that is going to lead this franchise to Super Bowl wins over the next ten years? Are you willing to spend $4000 on season tickets next year to find out? The fans didn’t deserve Winston after the Freeman debacle.

  31. Season Is Over Says:

Why would you throw a ridiculous hail mary with :23 seconds left on first down? I’ll wait. Are the Winston fans really that blinded?

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We all, I’m sure have much to be thankful for……I am thankful to be born in America…..my family and friends…..my health…..my Church…..and yes, even my Bucs….it is great to be a fan….sure we lose too much….but that doesn’t change being a supporter…

    And,Realist….you are a supporter too…..and athletic supporter.

  33. Mike Johnson Says:

its been hard on Jameis? Hell, I wonder if he will chip in and pay for my AAA meetings and additional counseling. I get drunk every time we lose. Meaning..I’m drunk every GD Sunday!!

  34. Buccernutter Says:

    Hey Joe.

Evans is 56 yards away from another 1k season. Close to breaking greens and Moss’s records.
Good article for u to write

  35. quickdrw21 Says:

Jameis has been hard on our fans to watch.

  36. Kansas95Buc Says:

    @Season Is Over,

who said he made that call? I know I didn’t

  37. JimmyJack Says:

Season is Over what in the world is going through your mind?

Just to let you know Winston does not call the plays. Unsure why you are blaming Winson for the play all.

That play was intended to induce a flag BTW.

  38. Season Is Over Says:

First off, Winston threw the ball. Second, Koetter said it was the wrong decision. Third, it gave the team no chance to win. Why do the fans have to suffer for amateur mistakes from a No. 1 overall pick in the draft in the middle of year 4? You need only turn on any other game and see a QB drafted after Winston actually doing what NFL QBs do?

  39. JimmyJack Says:

You sure Dirk didn’t say the call was the wrong decision? And there was two ways to win with that throw….1) Your reciever makes a contested catch. 2) You draw a flag for P.I……..heck you receiver could even try to bat the ball away giving you another try.

Anyways, your putting a microscope on a friggen Hail Mary. If you wanna bash Winston I could think of many better plays to harp on.

  40. Buc4evr Says:

I mirror all the other comments here: It’s a lot harder on the fans watching Jameis and the buffoons on defense. LVD needs to just shut the hell up and play, nothing he says matters and nobody cares. Just another bum in a Bucs uniform.

  41. dr. lob Says:

Winston, I hope you have learned that you need to take care of the football and be smart.

  42. Season Is Over Says:

I guess I can spell it out. With :23 seconds left on first down there are other opportunities to be successful than one of the least successful plays in football. I would have thought Winston would have known that by now.

  43. Islam By Force Says:

All Praise to Allah and The Prophet Mohammed, please describe the buttcheeks of the mr-jameis-Winston-Americas-quarterback-pro-blower-uber-woman-driver(why does America permissible woman drive car..why.why….WHY!?!?)-kissing- crotch-drunker-finger-of-female-stink-man.

  44. Bucnjim Says:

It is the parallel to Josh Freeman that has everyone freaking out about Winston really nothing to do with one specific play or game. My hope has always been his success.

  45. Bolt Isle Says:

I’ll bet the vast majority of these posters have no problems with Ben R.

  46. JimmyJack Says:

Sorry Season I completely disagree with you there. There are only few options in that spot and none of them give you a great chance to win.

But that’s your call. You can harp on whichever plays you choose. We all have our own set of personal grievances.

For what it’s worth this offense has been wildly underprepared to manage any 1-2 minutes offense despite the actual time or field position.

The game in Atlanta last year was the worst one I can recall.

  47. Season Is Over Says:

You have every opportunity to argue what was said, Bolt. The Winstopologists are attacking the fan base and now pulling the race card as the reason he struggles. Someone has to call that BS out. They have attacked every facet of this team leaving Winston with no blame except for the Cincy game. Lmao. He is the one that touches the ball on each play.

  48. AlteredEgo Says:

    Lol… same comments.. different story

  49. Dre Says:

AWWW the poor baby …. it’s been so hard jameis , it’s ok buddy yea it is!!! Is a good baby!!! Bucs need to get rid of lavonte and McCoy … the commitment they have on this team is pathetic … they are the culprit on defense … they can’t tackle if their life depended on it … big time overrated players … it’s just so funny how the joes think McCoy is hall of fame material … never seen a more pathetic writer in my life … I just love to come here and read the kaka they write and respond in laughter at the brown nose love they have for McCoy , David and Winston …. homer , biased writers in the bay area

  50. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Thank god for this site. Where else would you Jameis bashing idiots come when your manstrating?

  51. Buccernutter Says:

    Joe

    Ha nice! Should have known.

  52. Season Is Over Says:

Snowman is in the grin and bear it group. The group responsible for prolonging the Lost Decade by not demanding better.

  53. JimmyJack Says:

The fans are responsible for losing?

You can’t hold estly believe that I hope.

  54. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jameis is gonna rise and all you Jameis Haters can suck it shen he does.

Not resigning Jameis will set this franchise back 10 years.

We win with a new GM, it’s as simple as that.

  55. donuts Says:

    The season of negativity.

  56. lurker Says:

“it was taken away from him”

    smh
    ummmmmmmmmm
he was suspended because of his own actions and broken promise.

he threw the interceptions and had the turnovers. he gave the opportunities away.

  57. lurker Says:

time to learn from jameis’ history on and off the field so we are not doomed to repeat it! joe agrees.

  58. Boo Says:

Jameis has been hard on us.

    Sincerely, everyone on this site

  59. Destinjohnny Says:

    23rd best qb
His play is about on par
    No supprises

  60. Dapostman Says:

The pass Winston threw to DJax was virtually the same play that Case Keenum threw to Diggs to win a playoff game for Minnesota last season. Difference was Djax was Mesean on that play.

  61. Tbbucs3 Says:

Loaf Jackson is the new Loaf Jenkins.

  62. DBS Says:

One of the most amazing things you see here.If we win it is because of the leaders and leadership. But when we lose it’s only the coach and certain players. Not all the leaders and leadership. Well at least with certain people that’s how it works.

  63. Buc4life Says:

Jameis is my QB and Sunday I will be sitting at the 50 yard line with my #3 jersey on. I’m hoping for him to play well and the Bucs to win, but also know that our defense must make some stops.

  64. Bolt Isle Says:

Nothing was said about race by me. Huge difference in the off field issues between the two where race has nothing to do with it. Too many people want to be condescending judges.
No doubt James has brought a lot of this on himself. His haters are every bit as blind as the apologists, and cannot acknowledge much, if any, good about him. He could part Tampa Bay and they’d want to know why didn’t part the Gulf. That said, in spite of picks, he’s had this team in several games they could have won if he had a half decent defense or a half decent kicker. Winston haters want to blame all losses on him when this team would not have been in a lot of games or even won some without him. They desperately wanted an 8 team journeyman QB to be the savior because of two good games. If you’ve followed the league at all for a while, most knew it was coming, but still wanted to get rid of a 24 yr old QB with huge up side for a 35 year old journeyman. How QB’s many came into the league and threw for 4k their first three years? With a good head coach, he can turn it around Look at Goff.
Poor ownership, poor front office decision and poor coaching decisions have contributed to his schitt storm we are witnessing in addition to the play of the players. I’m surprised this franchise isn’t having to ridiculously over pay to get people to come here, or even stay here, like they had to do with players back in the day. The cap is obviously helping remedy that.

  65. Lamarcus Says:

Jw could go all Peyton Manning mixed with Brady and seasoned with a little Rogers and I bet anyone…….. We will still lose.

Jw haters have empty agruments and you can believe those liars

  66. DB55 Says:

why do you guys think that you can win games when your defense gives up almost 40 points EVERY game?

Joe what’s the season avg at now 36-38? Down by 30 at the half and you honestly think any QBs can win? Not to mention that in 10 games we have 1 hundred yard rusher.

Patrick Mahomes started turning the ball over the second he started getting hit. Pressure does that to any QBs.

Jameis nor fitz have a def, run game or oline. Guess what you can’t win like that even with zero turnovers.

  67. WalkdaPlank Says:

JW could throw 4 picks in a game and singlehandedly lose a winnable game for the team and Winston apologist would say it wasn’t his fault.

Oh wait, that already happened? Weird

  68. Joe Says:

Joe what’s the season avg at now 36-38?

Bucs are allowing 32.9 points a game which will go down every home game (Bucs player better defense at home). The record is the Balimore Colts who allowed 533 points (33.3 points a game).

  69. Lamarcus Says:

You can get all the HOF caliber QBs in their prime all on the same Bucs 2018 team and rotate them like Koetter’s weekly guest appearances at Qb and we will still find a way to lose!!!

  70. Jean Lafitte Says:

There’s a lot of teams who have poor defenses as well but win a lot of games. They have better offenses than us apparently and it all starts with their QB play. It’s one thing to eat yardage in chunks between the twenties but scoring touchdowns inside the redzone regularly takes a good and accurate decision maker. …like 54 – 51 Goff vs. Mahones

C’mon …there was NO defense …and both made mistakes but their execution on offense was orchestrated by their QB’s. Todd Gurley only had 55yds K.Hunt only had 70yds rushing. It was an air attack by both teams, and those dudes were pretty accurate

  71. BrianBucs Says:

Watching Winston embarrass the Bucs, on and off the field, has been hard on us all

  72. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Who cares?

He is or he isn’t. I think he isn’t.

  73. FireMikeSmith_orDie Says:

Yeah, Bucs fans need to ask themselves a very difficult question. Did the Bucs started sucking because of Winston or were they the laughing stock of the NFL for their entire history? (barring about 4-5 very outlier seasons)

Winston didn’t make the Bucs bad. The Bucs made Winston bad.
