It’s Not The Quarterback(s)

November 5th, 2018

Genius behind the defense is?

If some folks are trying to blame America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, for the losing, one national columnist believes they are full of it.

Albert Breer of is simply horrified by how rotten the Bucs defense is. Breer suggested Joe Montana couldn’t win games here the way the defense is giving it up so often like a businesswoman on Fremont Street in Las Vegas offering discounts.

The Buccaneers’ problems aren’t at quarterback right now. They’re on defense. And that they’ve persisted to this level shows that the problems went beyond what ex-coordinator Mike Smith was doing.

How far beyond? Is Breer blaming Bucs Bit-O-Honey snacking coach Dirk Koetter? Bucs AC/SC-loving general manager Jason Licht? Team Glazer? Who?

Joe was against bringing Smith, the defensive coordinator back. He had the worst defense in the NFL last year. A whole lot of far better coordinators lost their jobs last year and Smith was spared. Why?

Also, Joe pounded his keyboard almost daily for the Bucs to sign a veteran corner as the defensive coaching staff had yet to demonstrate it could develop a young corner. Instead, the Bucs decided to bank on rookies as backups if not starters. When Brent Grimes and Vernon Hargreaves were hurt, the rookies were thrown into the fire like sacrificial lambs.

Who couldn’t have seen this coming?

And speaking of sacrificial lambs, the defense was a big part of why Jameis got thrown overboard. You know who you people are, the people who would take Trent Dilfer over Jameis because Dilfer won games.

Don’t look now, but the Bucs are back on pace to set an all-time NFL record for most points allowed. Fun!

Not all the problems but a good majority of them.

  2. 813bucboi Says:

    it coaching……and to a lesser extent licht……

the coaches cant develop talent and licht ignored signing players like eric reid who was picked up off the street and picked fitz off…..

licht made his fair share of mistakes but if the coaches developed players like VHG, spence, kwon, then we wouldn’t be as bad….

  3. WalkdaPlank Says:

If throwing 4 picks including a pick-6 in a game in which you lose by 3 isn’t a problem to you then you need help

Of course that was just a really bad game for Jameis, his worst ever actually and it doesn’t define his career. But his career is not much better

    73 turnovers : 48 games

  4. cw_buc_crazy Says:

Actually it is the QB fault, but not only; because their decision (GM and HC)brought this guy here with his troubles and lack of skills.
Should not be consider “cleaning house” if you don’t replace this gang, at this order:
    JW; JL; DK.
    Go Bucs!

  5. Wombat Says:

America’s Back-up Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston didn’t help. Turnovers will take the wind out of any Defenses sails! Are we off the Brett Favre comparison and now using Joe Montana’s coz some scribe threw it out there? I would rather see Ryan Griffin at QB in the home stretch, if we have given up on winning….

  6. Eric Says:

    75tds also.

Too many turnovers I agree, but in fairness you have to list the 75 td’s. If you have any desire to be fair.

  7. Lord Cornelius Says:

It’s everything. There has been no vision at all between Licht and any coaches between Lovie and MS to see how to build a good defense.

I don’t understand how you can’t just model after the Panthers. They draft D-lineman at a premium. Front 7 >> Secondary. Then they find good tough physical corners.

Elite front 7 that gets after the QB + physical athletic corners = modern day elite NFL defenses for a 4-3. Seattle does it. Carolina does it. Atlanta was doing it before the entire D got hurt. Saints are trying to do it… They probably laughed when we took Vea over Davenport.

Zone D’s seem to only do well in 3-4 with lots of athletic pass rusher / hybrid LBs.

We have had an antiquated vision on how to build a team in general… I don’t care about the passing yard stats; we still have on run game and the quick passing game is weaker compared to elite offenses.

OUr defense has been built on unathletic short corners being put out of positioin; and an old a4ss D-line lead by the king of softness and losing. That whole D needs to be blown up. Licht had no vision on that side at all. He needs to go.

  8. JimmyJack Says:

Our QB play stinks this year. They can only score against prevent defenses. Color me unimpressed

  9. cw_buc_crazy Says:

Yes, definitely if the Glazers consider The season is Over, the best thing they should do, is to play Griffin so he, and rest will know what we got.
    Like this idea.
Any thing that smells hope, will take it.
    Go Bucs!

  10. Kgh4life Says:

We all know that Dirk Koetter will be fired, but if they bring back Licht i seriously have to question the Glazers judgement and football acumen. They have to clean house and start over, hire a operations person and allow them to hire the GM and Head Coach.

  11. Kansas95Buc Says:

an article that clearly points to the defense being the biggest problem on our team and people wanna talk about the QB….some people reading comprehension is complete trash

  12. JimmyJack Says:

TDs are good and all but context must be accounted for. TDs are not nearly as valuable as some people think they are if you are down by 3-4-5 scores already.

You want a pat on the back Fitz? Then stick the opening possession I to the endzone. Give us a lead and set a tone.

We haven’t scored a meaningful TD in five of our games this year. How bout that stat?

  13. D-Rome Says:

The Bucs record isn’t solely because of Jay-Miss. That said, Bucs fans would give Jay-Miss a pass if he was doing smart things on the football field. Bucs fans would give Jay-Miss the pass if he truly was maturing as a QB. For example, the Colts are 3-5 as well but Andrew Luck is having a tremendous season. Colts fans know he’s not the problem and that he is the future.

The same can’t be said for Jay-Miss. He’s not improving. He’s not a leader. He’s not the best QB in franchise history. He’s not the future.

  14. JimmyJack Says:

Kansas read the title you slapped ass

  15. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

So glad we fired Mike Smith, now we just need to get rid of Jamies Licht and Koetter

  16. K_Bassuka Says:

Fitzpatrick it’s a career loser so it’s DJax, we signed a bunch of washed up rejects to fill the D-Line, our HC doesn’t understand the benefits of a good RB and our GM it’s below average at best.

  17. Kansas95Buc Says:

Read the article and go read what I posted. Joe is saying that people want to look at the QB but our main problem is defense. You sir suck at reading comprehension, like I stated earlier

  18. BucThis Says:

Dumb@$$ Dirk and Loser Licht will be gone after the season. I think Winston gets another year under a new coaching regime given that the current regime has proven time and time again it cant develop any talent. In fact, they destroy it.

    #HARBAUGH 2019

  19. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Its the GM its always been the GM been saying this for 2 years and the crappy moves he has been making and now this team is 3-5 years away from not being the 6-10 franchise they are

You can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear.

  21. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

As it stands right now, Quarterback or any of the offense takes a major backseat to everything on the defense in terms of priorities. If we score 28 points there is no reason we should lose by two scores. That’s just awful.

  22. LakeLand Says:

    The “Entire” team stinks

You can’t blame one or two units for the pathetic effort of this team
The offense has committed 21 turnovers
The offense don’t score early, and get behind by 3-4 scores
The defense give up a lot of points
    The defense don’t create turnovers
    The special teams are non-existence
The coaching staff don’t put players in a position to succeed
The GM has far too many misses in the draft
He also has a bad track record of signing free agents
He has no idea of how to build a contender
The Head Coach and the coaching staff doesn’t prepare the team
That’s the reason why they are behind 3-4 scores during the 1st half
    The coaching staff is terrible

  23. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

so I guess it is also jameis fault the team has been a complete embarrassment for 16 years without a single meaningful win. I guess it’s jameis fault the Bucs are run more like a single A minor league team than a NFL Franchise…. I guess it’s jameis fault that dungy the clown failed and wasted the career of the teams only legit hall of famer warren sapp. I guess it’s Jameis’s fault the team has not even sniffed a meaningful game in over a decade. I guess it’s Jameis fault the team wasted a first round pick on a slow, ignorant midget for a cb. I guess it’s jameis fault the team goes through more 2nd rd draft picks than Hillsborough crackowres do condoms. I guess it’s jameis fault the soft highest paid player on the team has continued to teach defenders how to loaf, quit on coaches and cash checks.

jameis would be a lot more successful if he would ditch all these has been failures putting BS in his ear. Getting advice from underachieving bums that barely won 5 playoff games their entire careers is flat out stupid. Might as well ask Richard Simmons for advice on which strip joints to visit.

the best thing for jameis is to get out of the black hole that is Tampa bay buccaneer football. Jameis will be winning playoff games and contending for titles while you losers worship failures from the past that choked in the postseason while making comments about current bucs and their basement title streak.

Winston lost the Cincy game; anyone who thinks otherwise is blind.

  25. Architek Says:

We don’t have any pro bowler quarterbacks on our roster joe.

  26. miken Says:

Its not the qbs but we need a good qb. One is a back up set to retire and the other is a #1 pick that is worse than a back up getting close to retirement.

  27. zzbuc Says:

its the QB, no running game, lack of talent and no defense at all…….. Stop blaming the coach that its the least of our problems!!!!! Joe don’t polarize the situation anymore…’s not one problem or the other …….Seems like you are JW attorney!!!!! We do have a horrible defense we don’t have a defense and we have a serious problem on the QB position……..Give us a break!!!!

  28. DB55 Says:

How many games did Jameis lose by 3 points or less? (Rhetorical)

  29. Pete I Says:

It is the QB, Winston sucks. fitz isn’t much better but he is better. It is also the Defense and the coaching and the soft locker room and the owners. Winston is a first pick fail and always will be. He is at best Jeff George. Mediocre to slightly above mediocre.

  30. Cobraboy Says:

Just because the defense sucks does not mean Winston has not played badly.

  31. Sharkiebucfan Says:

  32. I Bleed Pewter Says:

*good grief* divide and conquer …this reads like ginger Joe is on a mission

  33. Eric Says:

In their first 48 games tds/ints

    Peyton Manning 85/58
    Bret Favre 70/51
    Jameis 75/54

But lets get rid of him…..

  34. I Bleed Pewter Says:

It’s hard to believe we have QB’s giving it back to our defense to defend like candy too!

  35. Say what Says:

Exactly Joe!!!the fans are ignorant to blame it on Winston. If we had a defense just an average defense we would have only 1 loss. Even with Winston’s interceptions.

  36. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “And speaking of sacrificial lambs, the defense was a big part of why Jameis got thrown overboard.” Hang tough Joe. If you look hard enough I’m sure you can find someone on the defense to pin those 10 INTs on. And all those fumbles last year? I think someone on the defense was spiking his drinks.

Oh coincidentally, Jameis has a 19-29 record (48 games played), and no question a better defense could’ve improved that record. He’s passed for 75 TDs and run for another 9 TDs … so 84 TDs he was directly responsible for in 48 games (a rate of 1.75 TDs/game that he was directly responsible for).

So just for kicks compared him to Tom Brady, who happens to have a 203-57 record (260 games played). He’s passed for 505 TDs and run for another 71 … so 576 TDs he was directly responsible for in 260 games (a rate of 2.22 TDs/game that he was directly responsible for). That’s ONLY a tad over 3 PPG difference … but I’d take it.

BTW, John Elway came out at a 1.44 TDs/game ratio; Peyton Manning at a 2.10 TDs/game ratio; Drew Brees came out at a 2.05 TDs/game ratio; Matt Ryan at a 1.80 TDs/game ratio; Cam Newton at a 1.99 TDs/game ratio. So Jameis is ‘in the conversation’ to be sure, but so is Ryan Fitzpatrick (his ratio was 1.65 TDs/game over his career … and he’s played on some really bad teams).

  37. Pete I Says:

    “Peyton Manning 85/58
    Bret Favre 70/51
    Jameis 75/54

But lets get rid of him…..”

But those guys had winning records by year 4 and had been to the playoffs. Winston the America’s First Pick Fail is only similar to those guys on paper, certainly not on the field.

  38. JimmyJack Says:

To think that an average defense makes us a winning team is pure guesswork.

How the heck can we win with an offense that can only score vs prevent defense?

Bad assumptions running wild over here.

  39. LakeLand Says:

It’s bad that the Bucs play in the NFC South

    New Orleans-8

    New Orleans-8

  40. cmurda Says:

The offense is scoring points. They are on record pace in fact. The defense is also on puke-inducing record pace. It’s definitely the defense. A team can overcome 2 turnovers a game when they score as often as we do. The defense is simply humiliating. It starts with our D Line. JPP is exempt from my criticism because he has balled out. Kudos to him. McCoy, Vea, Curry, Nassib to a lesser extent have been pure crap. Nassib makes some plays here and there but there is no consistent pressure on this team. The whole line seems to get smashed backwards and blocks open up gaping holes for opposing RB’s. I forgot Curry was on the team until I saw him in pre-game warmups. Get rid of the paycheck collectors and get a GM that knows how to draft. By now, we should have a solid defense and instead Licht has missed on almost all defensive picks. Only Carlton Davis is saving him from missing on all of them.

  41. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I don’t really see the difference between Fitz going 3 and out and Jameis driving down the field and then throwing a pick.
Either way it results in this putrid pewter poopstain of a defense getting the ball back to let the other team score.
Go with the 24yo who can still develop, over the 35 year old dog who isn’t learning by new tricks.
Bucs just are a joke of a franchise, it’s embarrassing and the Glazers just laugh all the way to the bank.

  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Certainly the Bengals game is on Jameis……3 interceptions in their territory and the 4th a pick 6……that translates to a lot of points in a 3 point loss..

BUt, overall this year it’s not the QB play…’s the Defense that has lost games…..our offense hasn’t had a short field all year…..we have created very few turnovers….and given up huge early leads…..

I am very disturbed that we didn’t bring in one experienced DB in FA or trade…..

  43. Rod Munch Says:

Only two offenses in the history of the NFL have scored more than 35 points a game, which is what you’d need to win with this defense. Only two, ever.

Anyone talking about QBs being an issue is just a dishonest blowhard, or an idiot, but it’s one or the other.

However if you do want to talk QB’s, then it’s worth noting the Bucs are once again NOT the top offense under Fitz, the Rams past him again. Under Winston they went to #1, by like 20 yards, which is a lot, but after the offenses 301 yard day behind Fitz’s 243 passing yards, they slipped back to 2nd. Not a big deal in reality, but worth noting since we know for a fact had that happened under Jameis the Winston haters would be saying he’s awful and we need to cut him, and look, he ruined the #1 offense, etc.

  44. Dewey Selmon Says:

We do have more sacks (24) in 8 games then all of last year (22). Also have given up more points in 8 games then the 2002 SB team gave up all year.

  45. Eric Says:

Im not saying Jameis has earned a big contract, but he shouldn’t be benched either IMO.

He was off to a rocky start in two games, but based on his past performance and the future of the team he should be playing.

I like FItz but I don’t see where playing him accomplishes anything.

But lets see if they are able to get on a streak, who knows.

  46. Anonymous Says:

    Lakeland I agree,
    The “Entire” team stinks

Let’s remember that Brett Farve was a gunslinger n risk taker who had lots of ints n turnovers as the Packers QB. However, contrary to ur comments:

The Packers offense scored early, and didn’t get behind by 3-4 scores
The defense didn’t give up a lot of points
    The defense created turnovers
    The special teams existed
The coaching staff put players in a position to succeed
The GM had far too many good picks in the draft
He also had a great track record of signing free agents…Reggie White, Desmond Howard.
He had creative innovative ideas of how to build a contender
The Head Coach and the coaching staff always prepared the team
That’s the reason they were competitive, scored points, won a SB, n oh yeah, created the infamous Lambeau Leap.

  47. Dewey Selmon Says:

Fake news! Bucs only have 18 sacks, disregard my previous post.

  48. gp Says:

The formula is simple, it’s the ingredients that are hard to come by.
It starts in the trenches with beastly offensive and defensive lines.
Add to that a running game, should be easy with that beastly line.
Mix in a secondary that can support that beastly defensive line and give them time to pressure the quarterback.
With a few targets(not necessarily elite) that can run accurate routes, catch, and make adjustments to the ball…(watch Jackson’s effort adjusting today-as opposed to the effort he gave Winston)
Even a “journeyman” quarterback can look efficient and sometimes elite.
Of course, the offensive and defensive coaching schemes need to be both aggressive and flexible to each game situation.

Just look at how many of you call a sixth round pick destined to be a career back-up the “GOAT”(excellent game manager and more athletic than I could ever have even hoped for but… he was luuuuucky to have landed where he did!!!)

Winston has NOT had ALL the supporting staff that ANY quarterback needs to succeed. (no quarterback in the league could have won with this “team”)
Can he be elite? He has the raw talent.
Will he be elite? If he has the support of a decently built team and coaching… the potential is there.

OH!!! One other very KEY ingredient
That entire team has to be on the same page with the desire to win and the PRIDE of ownership in their level of play

Sorry to say, there has only been one brief period where the Buc’s showed that key ingredient and it ain’t now!

Winston lost the Cincy game; anyone who thinks otherwise is blind.

You are 100% correct SC Bucs Fan but what about the rest of the games from the past 3 years. You see this is the problem you use one game to demonstrate your point but there are countless other games to destroy your point. We get it you don’t like Jameis but if you are trying to defend this defense you sir are in really bad shape with this argument.

Last year alone the defense lost the Buffalo, GB, Atlanta (home) and Carolina games. You win those 4 and just those 4 we are 9-7 then if you throw in a kicker to beat the Pats and we are 10-6 with Jameis playing all but 3 games. So how it is the QB again when the defense is literally the worst in the league and on pace this year to the WORST OF ALL TIME????

  56. Wesley Says:

I defended Licht for a while but a GM needs a vision not just to be average in the draft.

After the 2018 draft his drafting record is at best mediocre.

2014-meh – hard not to screw up pick #7. F*cked every other pick up
2015-looks like we might be giving up on your 1st overall pick. D Smith been OK. Marpet best pick. Kwon is overrated and LBs are found in the mid rounds all the time.
    2016-horrifically bad draft
2017-possibly the best due to Godwin/Howard but Howard was a no brainer that fell to you; and Justin Evans has been meh so far. I think he’d be good in a good scheme with better talent around him tho.

So yeah not so good. And it’s even worse when the fan base wanted guys like Sheldon Rankins or to trade up for Ramsey or to go S/DE over Aguayo /etc. Or Derwin James or Marcus Davenport or Derruis Guice or Donte Jackson.

I am pretty positive if the Bucs drafted off of JBF polls it would be the same or better than Licht’s history of drafting. That’s not good. We have all been in consensus and right about it way more than being in consensus and wrong.

IT’S COACHING!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m on the DERICK Brooks train..Hire him as President of football operations and oversee EVRYTHING!!!! Keep Jameisx and bring in a coach that can actually get through to grown men..

This team looks bad at everything across the board. I really wish the glaziers would at least start promoting guys mid season and stop procrastinating on the inevitable. Dirk failed move on. But first hire DERICK BROOKS!

  70. Rod Munch Says:

I just happened to bring up Twitter and Dirk was trending and I got so excited since I assumed if he was trending it was because he got fired… but no, it’s just Twitter being fake news and claiming he’s trending because of the press conference.

    Cincinnati. 21-0

  73. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Hey Pete, those other QBs also didn’t have the worst defenses of all time. As the article stated, Joe Montana couldn’t win with this defense. I know you don’t like JW but it is a team sport. He was responsible for the Cincy loss but outside of that game the majority of this franchise losses the past few years can be placed squarely on the defense.

  74. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I read an article that Tennessee isn’t sure about Mariota fifth year, maybe we can swap them Jameis in kind of a do over. I wonder if a change of scenery would do them both some good.

  75. Jeagan1999 Says:

Jameis isn’t the ONLY problem, obviously. That still doesn’t mean that he isn’t a big liability to the team! Where is there any evidence that after 48 games, he is becoming worthy of that 1st overall pick? How is 73 turnovers in 48 games confidence inspiring? He was turnover prone in college, and he’s turnover prone in the NFL…..what has changed?

  76. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

you hire derrick brooks people are delusional idiots…. he just ran storm into the ground. the guy is nice but that does not make him qualified. he is not qualified to manage 3rd shift wendys on a slow night yet you morons think he is the answer to a failed dysfunctional franchise that has never been great nor contenders… wow… maybe i should play the god card more…. 1 good year in 42 is flat out sad. without sapp 55 is just average.

  77. Glen Sturdevant Says:

how many 4th qtr leads has Jameis given the bucs that the D has given up. Jameis isn’t without blame for constantly pressing but on the other hand he probably feels like no lead is ever safe. So he is always trying to hard. i have always supported the guy and am starting to waver but geez i dont want to be one of the lost causes again and if we dont have a QB thats what we are.

  78. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Yes Glen, the Jameis haters ignore all those 4th quarter rallies he has made though. They can wait to get back to the glory days of Leftwich, Sims, Greise and Glennon. I can live with one or two picks a game when every defense in the league can just focus on the passing game because they know the Bucs can’t run the ball and are going to heave it up 40-50 times a game.

  79. Glen Sturdevant Says:

i think its time for Licht to go, we cut the 2nd rnd kicker, Spence barely makes the gameday roster same with RoJo and Cappa was a third rndr who hasnt suited up once, ive never heard of a second round pick being a healthy scratch on opening day. lichts has had 4 drafts only one 1st rndr looks legit (Howard , Jameis maybe maybe not)

  80. Rod Munch Says:

    Some fun Winston stats…

Winston has the 29th highest passer rating in NFL history
Winston is 8th, all-time, in passing yards/per game
Winston is 20th, all-time, in yards per attempt
Winston is 19th, all-time, in adjusted net yards per attempt (this formula includes taking away yards for sacks AND INTs – note that Winston moves UP when counting turnovers into the equation)
Winston is 17th, all-time, in pass completions per game
Winston is 16th, all-time, in sack % index, meaning his sack rate vs adjusted average)

So just to compare, and I didn’t check the numbers ahead of time to see if they help me or not, but lets look at Favre’s CAREER numbers, not his 24 year old numbers, but for his career, at the same categories as above.

Favre, 30th highest passer rating in NFL history
    Favre, 18th, all-time, in passing yards/per game
Favre, 67th, all-time, in yards per attempt
Favre, 30th, all-time, in adjusted net yards per attempt (this formula includes taking away yards for sacks AND INTs – note that Winston moves UP when counting turnovers into the equation)
Favre, 19th, all-time, in pass completions per game
No stat available for sack % index

So wow, I swear I didn’t set this up, I just chose numbers where Winston was doing well and that shows he runs a deep ball offense, and, well, he literally beat Favre’s CAREER numbers in every category, and remember Favre became a dramatically less TO prone and more accurate QB very late in his career.

  81. BigMacAttack Says:

It’s all a problem. Just take your pick. Plenty of blame to go around. They’ve taken “Embrace the Suck” to a whole new level.
    Get a new GM.
    Get a new Coach
Get rid of the dead weight.
New Slogan: The Suck Stops Here.

  82. JimmyJack Says:

Rod Munch….. unfortunately a #1 ranking does you little good if they cannot keep pace with teams like Carolina, Cincy and(goog god) Chicago.

Truely good offenses don’t go into a shell or make turnovers when their opponents start scoring. Truely good offenses have answers and put up points when they are needed.

Our offense isn’t that good. We can only score vs prevent defenses. Wake me up when that changes

  83. Tackleblockwin Says:

Doesn’t matter who QBs this team if the D gifts 30-40 plus to the other team. You might win some games like that…but you can kiss playoff chances goodbye. Only way outta this hole is the D to improve to just be average. That seems to be very wishful thinking from what we have seen.

  84. WalkdaPlank Says:

Brett Favre literally said you can’t compare him to Jameis Winston.

The man himself literally said it.

Yet you continue to do it.

  85. WalkdaPlank Says:

Another funny thing is whenever a high draft pick QB starts playing badly and has been in the league a few years, everyone, almost literally everyone, compares that guy to some Hall of Famer like Manning or Favre, because their careers started slow

JaMarcus Russell, Vince Young, Ryan Leaf, Matt Leinart, the list goes on.
All these guys had great college careers. All of them drafted highly. All of them started playing badly. And they all got compared by their respective fan base and media to guys like Favre and Manning. Even Josh Freeman received these comparisons right here on JBF.

It’s ridiculous. Not every bust 1st round QB is gonna end up a Hall of Famer. That’s why they’re in the Hall.

  86. Rod Munch Says:

WalkdaPlank – So what that Favre said that, he was also drunk and pilled the up the entire time so it’s not like he remembers any of it. LOL!

  87. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – You need to double check your fake narrative, Jameis literally plays his best when it matters most, which is why he has a good QBR, which accounts for things like turnovers when it matters, taking sacks when it matters, only getting 6 yards on 3rd and 12.

  88. Tony LA Says:

A lot of dumb takes on these boards.
    So damn dumb

The Bucs have one of the top offenses in the NFL.

It is all on the defense, folks.
If you think otherwise, you’re just proving your own ridiculous ignorance.

  89. Kansas95Buc Says:

I figured it out, the Winston haters are incapable of reasoning. How many numbers prove that Winston isn’t bad like the lynch mob makes him? This is the second time somebody ran the numbers on Winston and it proves he is indeed the better QB. Remember folks, reading is fundamental 🙂

  90. Pete I Says:

Brett Farve will always be considered a winner. Winston a bust. A first pick bust. And he is THE problem.

  91. Rod Munch Says:

Pete – Cool story brah, thanks for sharing.

  92. Kansas95Buc Says:

    @Pete I
You might wanna read the numbers on Winston that was posted by our good friend Rod Munch

  93. JimmyJack Says:

Rod Munch…….If you think the narritve is fake then please explain……. What is so fake about this offense having no answer against Pittsburg? Or against Atlanta? Why didn’t we have an answer yesterday or in Chicago……….That’s four games right there buddy and half our schedule. That’s not good.

What are you going to tell me that answering back when your team gets scored on isn’t an important moment?

What is it are these four games not enough for you? We can retrack last year if you like………We had no answer against the Cards or Minnesota off the top of my head. Do I really need to continue?

We aren’t that good on offense….Real good offenses have answers. Our offense hasn’t had one since week 2. Where’s your answer? Go head answer any one of the questions I asked you…..your pick.

  94. JimmyJack Says:

And I’m not trying to blame the offense solely……..But go back and look at poster Lakeland who keeps putting up our half time scores.

In each game we were blown out at halftime. It takes two bad sides of football to get blown out like that.

It aren’t about fixing one side of the ball to me. Both sides of the ball suck.

  95. JimmyJack Says:

The offense had two possessions yesterday with the game tied 0-0. They had two opportunities to set a tone for that game and siezed momentum………..A good offense would do exactly that most of the time.

Not us…..we moved the ball for 3 yards and threw a basic pick six. That’s unexceptable IMO…….But hey of you wanna forgive them because they managed to move the ball and put up points after we were down 4 TDs and facing a prevent look then have at it…. Don’t be asking me to buy in though. I aren’t no fool.

  96. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – LOL! Yes, set the standard as you have to outscore other teams playing against what is literally one of, if not THE, worst defense in the history of the NFL. You need basically 36 points a game to win with this defense, there’s been only two offenses in the HISTORY of football that have scored more than 35, and that was the 2013 Broncos and the 2007 Pats, so yeah, if the Bucs offense can’t be in the top offenses of all-time clearly that’s the issue – not the historically insanely bad defense that is giving up record points per game.

Anywho, as a reminder, the Bucs literally had the ball with a chance to win against Pittsburgh, and Dirk punted the ball away when anyone with a brain knew they weren’t getting it back.

As for Atlanta, again, the Bucs had the ball with a chance to win the game, only to have Dirk literally call a QB draw double lateral from the Falcon’s 20. Yeah, nothing like not giving your QB a chance to throw the ball to your huge WRs and TE’s, no, instead run a trick play up the gut.

Anywho the idea that the offense stinks if they can’t score more points than this historically bad defense gives up, that’s fake news, and a fake narrative. You can have a really really good offense (in fact it’s the best in the teams history this year) and have a historically bad defense at the same time, and one doesn’t mean the other doesn’t exist.

  97. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – The Bucs are down 35-14 at halftime, but it’s the offense to blame because they didn’t score 14 points on their first two possessions… Haha… come on, do you actually read your own posts? That’s is literally an impossible standard that NO offense has EVER been held to, EVER.

Get in touch with reality then get back to me.

  98. mark2001 Says:

Breer who? How many nationally recognized broadcasters are there out there?

  99. Bobby M. Says:

No team could win with a QB that has 71 turnovers in 45+ games…..You would literally need the old bucs defense…and that would come with Sapp reaming Winston’s a$$ for every turnover the same as he did with Dilfer.

  100. JimmyJack Says:

Rod don’t make this about more then it is.

As I have explained to you good offenses answer back during games.

I had asked a very simple question so of you wanna disagree the answer the question…..not sckew the conversation.

Why didn’t we have any answers against Pitt, Atl, Car or Chi? Tell me why.

  101. JimmyJack Says:

If our offense was really that good there would be a darn good excuse why we don’t have any answers.

But there aren’t no excuse. We just aren’t that good. Overrated offense.

  102. Kansas95Buc Says:

    @Bobby M.
NO QB ever could win with THIS defense, which is the whole point of this comment thread

  103. JimmyJack Says:

Also Rod I find it very peculiar that you claim I blame the offense for not scoring 14 points on the first two possessions.

Meanwhile you accuse me of false narritive when you completely fabricated this nonsense about 14 points on two possessions.

Look for my false narritive all day and you won’t find it. Your false narritive is right here in black and white buddy.

  104. JimmyJack Says:

All I said was that if our offense was that good they would have an ability to set a tone once in a while. They would hand momentum to the defense.

    Good offenses have that ability.

But according to you setting a tone by scoring first is an impossible standard no offense should ever be held to, EVER.

Boy I’ll tell ya Munch, you are a special piece of work buddy.

  105. Sumo Says:

When all you pick in the draft is offense, this is what you get. Our coach could care less about the defense so we are last in defense. We need about 2 drafts picking defense to fix this. We tried picking defense this year but good things didn’t happen yet. With that being said, Jameis isn’t the answer. Too many turn overs and it did not get better.

  106. Kansas95Buc Says:

So if Winston isn’t the answer when we clearly see he isn’t the main problem, which QB do you know of could win with this team as is? Don’t worry. I’ll wait…

  107. LakeLand Says:

    It’s all on the defense.

How many leads has the defense BLOWN this season?

This PAPER THIN GARBAGE offense has tricked these gullible Buc fans

  108. Dooshlarue Says:

I wonder what little webster changed his name to this time?
    I have a pretty good idea…….
    Farking loser.

  109. JimmyJack Says:

I’ve seen a lot of good offenses over my years but I never saw an offense that I would consider good that goes down by 3+ TDs more then half the team.

Good offenses can play shootout football. Our list of shootout wins starts and ends with one game. Anytime we have needed a shootout from our offense we were blown out by the half. Call me crazy but I expect better from this team.

  110. LakeLand Says:

    The Bucs are 3-5
They haven’t had a 4th quarter lead in any of their losses
They haven’t even had a 2nd quarter lead in any of their losses

But it’s ALL on the defense

    This is HILARIOUS

  111. LakeLand Says:

    And BTW

They haven’t had any 3rd quarter leads in those 5 losses either

  112. JimmyJack Says:

Lakeland our offense also gags the ball up more then any other team. Maybe I’m confused but I see that as a problem.

  113. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs offense has more turnovers than Atlanta, Carolina, New Orleans combined

  114. BigMacAttack Says:

Who had more busts and blown draft picks or FA signings? Dominick or Licht? Anybody know? They both suck.

  115. Matt Says:

    The defense is historically bad.

There is not a single player, besides Evans, that you can build around. That’s awful

Jameis isn’t awful, but he’s not good enough. He’s a very low end QB1. Similar to Fitz. That doesn’t make him the biggest problem on the team, but you have to upgrade it.

Put it this way… what teams would prefer Winston as their starting QB at $20m per year?

That’s the key, he will get $20m next year.

There are zero teams that would trade their QB situation for Jameis at $20m next year. ZERO. Even if it was a straight up talent swap (no salary) then maybe NYG, Tenn, and Miami.

    Not good enough

  116. JimmyJack Says:

Lol Lakeland that shouldn’t even be possible.

  117. LakeLand Says:

    The defense is bad

But when people say IT”S ALL on the defense

I’m not sure if they understand the definition of ALL

  118. LakeLand Says:

These gullible fans can go on and on about the Bucs offense

But they don’t realize what division they play in
You need a COMPLETE team to win in this division
    Scoring garbage points isn’t enough

    NFC South Offense PTS/G

    New Orleans- 34.9
    Tampa Bay-28.6
    Atlanta- 28.5
    Carolina- 27.5

All of these teams can score points

The Bucs are last in rushing
Has more turnovers- more than the other 3 teams COMBINED

  119. Dapostman Says:

    Jameis Winston:

is 17-7 in his career when the Bucs give up 24 pts or less.

is 1-22 in his career when the Bucs give up 25 pts or more.

24 pts is the NFL average.

    It ain’t rocket science.

  120. LakeLand Says:

It’s not average in the NFC South

    That’s the problem
When you play in the NFC South
    You have to be above-average

    Average is not good enough

  121. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – Here’s the numbers… this time points scored per game…

    Pittsburgh – #9
    Bears – #5
    Atlanta – #8
    Panthers – #11

The Buccaneers in points per game… #7, with 28.6 points scored per game.

Meanwhile the Bucs defense… #32, with 34.4 points given up per game.

Oh, and for the defenses the Bucs played… points given up per game…

    Steelers – #15
    Bears – #4
    Falcons – #29
    Panthers – #12

So yeah, they got a good matchup with the Falcons, but outside of that they’ve faced top half defenses – while the opponents have, once again, faced literally, by far, the worst defense in football.

The idea that the offense isn’t pulling its weight and isn’t getting the job done is such a ridiculous claim it’s mind blowing in it’s stupidity. If The Bucs had even the Falcons #29 ranked defense they’d be outscoring opponents right now by +0.2 – instead they’re -5.8. That’s how much worse this defense is than even the #29 ranked defense.

  122. Jeffbuc Says:

Jason Licht is killing us. Vita vea is a 3-4 defensive tackle. Who should have been drafted by Baltimore in about the 4-5th round. Ronald Jones doesn’t even belong on an nfl roster. Running back is one of the positions that usually instantly pay off. Two I drafted runningbacks this year are better than him Shaun Wilson and Lindsay from the broncos. So next year we have to draft another defensive tackle and runningback. Then are other second round pick MJ Stewart is slow and can’t cover a slot receiver. That was the knock on him and we pass on a guy who just had an interception against us who runs step for step with Desean Jackson. Stewart couldn’t keep up with one of the slowest receivers in the league in sanu in Atlanta game. So throw in cornerback we have to draft after already spending two seconds and one first in the last three years

  123. LakeLand Says:

The NFC South scoring average is 29.9 PTS/G

  124. LakeLand Says:

    Rod Munch

I know the defense is bad

But it’s not all on the defense
The Bucs are 3-5 because of the slow starts in those games they lost

They BOTH are to blame for these losses

You can’t fall behind these teams by 3-4 scores
The chances are slim and none that you come back and win

  125. Pittsshore Says:

Watching Marcis Mareota this evening makes me sick to my stomach. We could of, and should have, had him. Selecting Winston will set this team back 10+ years. Pretty sad.

  126. LakeLand Says:

The offense start scoring points after they have fell behind
And the defense are stopping the other team from scoring many points

    They BOTH come out flat
They they BOTH start playing ball after falling behind 3-4 scores

  127. MadMax Says:

Yeah, Mariotta is looking great right now…, its a bucs life lol

  128. Buc1987 Says:

    A fanbase FULL of morons…..

  129. unbelievable Says:

The Cincy game was on Jameis, the rest of the losses…. no, not even close.

Worst defense in NFL history folks.

  130. T REX Says:

Reality…make sure you leave town with Jmeis. I’ll help pack your trailer up. Good riddance. I cant wait to ditch Winston so all these pseudo buc fsucks fans will go bye bye.

  131. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Fans are fans for a reason. Most don’t know football and think Jameis is bad. I wish I could buy stock in Jameis like how overseas betting shops allow people to buy stock in players. Basement price for a future HOFer

  132. passthebuc Says:

Was it the D that tossed those interceptions.
