Play That Broke The Back

October 14th, 2018

Crucial pick.

There was no way the Bucs should have been in the game. The defense in the first half was beyond atrocious. A lot of coaches would have launched Mike Smith at halftime.

(Hey, all those hours Smith allegedly put in to solve the defense’s problems during the bye week sure worked, didn’t it?)

With Atlanta up 24-13, the Bucs defense forced a punt (!) to begin the second half. Then the offense was marching to what looked like a score. Adam Humphries caught a pass from Jameis on the right side and looked like he might get a touchdown when he was caught from behind by Damontae Kazee at the Atlanta-2. Uh, oh.

After a false start by Antony Auclair (naturally), the Bucs had the ball at the Atlanta-7. Then, from a shotgun, Jameis had time to throw and fired for Chris Godwin in the back of the end zone. The ball hit the defender in the helmet as Godwin reached back for it, bounced way high in the air and landed in the arms of Brian Poole.

That play doomed the Bucs. It was bad enough the garbage Bucs defense put the team in an awful hole. Again. And the kicking game. Again. But a team trying to battle back cannot play Santa Claus and expect to win.

Should have been a PI call on that play. I always thought you had to make a play on the ball if you were hitting the receiver…
Either way, a bad decision by JW.

  2. Ryan McGregor Says:

JW was in position to win the game at the end. He didn’t. 8 wins in the next 11 games or its time to move on. No excuses.

  3. D-Rome Says:

I’m done with J-Miss. I’ve seen enough. Why am I not surprised that throw and interception was made? He’s not the QB of the future and he doesn’t deserve to be the QB of the future. I don’t care if statistically he’s the best quarterback in franchise history. It just doesn’t matter. He’s not winning and he’s not leading this team anywhere. It’s time to move on.

  4. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

My wife was like I can’t believe he didn’t score. She was like do you think we will score? I’m like you just jinxed us. That all being said our defense puts us in these situations. Fire Mike Smith or I don’t show up anymore to games. It’s that simple. Do not try and bail this guy out again.

  5. Gobucs Says:

    Yep and had hump open.

Same mistakes over and over. Making bad reads over and over.

He has peaked. Plain and simple.

Anyone with eyes can see he’s peaked.

Except ofcourse all you FSU idiot blind homers.

  6. Back2bucball Says:

I have never said this BEFOR.. I am done watching this team! I already sold my bucs ‘s Bengals tickets to a Bengals fan no less. This defence I can not stand to watch anymore! Why is Mike Smith still employed ? Until they get rid of him, the D will be un-watchable and now so will be the games as we can not expect Jameis to win shootouts ! Somewhere there has got to be a coach who can teach kwon how to hit the right holes! Someone that can coach up the secon9d9ary!

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You forget another failed running play from the 2…….run failures on 1st & 10 in the red zone……every time.
On the next trip to the red zone we finally passed for 9 yards on 1st & 10 and ended up with a TD….
Coaches…..ATTENTION!!! Don’t run it in the red zone…..ever. Or until we prove we can…..but unfortunately trying to prove we can ends up in failure. Every time.

  8. firethecannons Says:

the helmet hit happens-oh well but yeah you are right Joe–mike smith should be launched by now–keep the pressure on koetter about–it , it is his choice to keep smith who has outdated scheme that has been ineffective for long time

  9. Bucnative Says:

The play that broke was Winston forcing the ball in the end zone, Two Int’s in the red zone and you’ll lose everytime.

  10. NJBucsFan Says:

Don’t forget the pick that never happen f in Q1 because the ATL DB can’t catch. Hit him right in the breadbasket. And to think Winston actually was aiming for a Buc WR

  11. LakeLand Says:

The Falcons defense came into the game, giving up 32.6 points a game

Their last 3 games, they gave up 121 points
The Bucs offense didn’t get it done
The Bucs defense gave them field position in the half
They should have blowed the Falcons out

  12. Anonymous Says:

Would rather see maybe a shovel pass from there since we can’t seem to run the ball inside the 5. Of course it wasn’t a bad play call, just bad execution, but also Hump knew he should’ve scored and not leave it to chance

  13. Season Is Over Says:

Everyone knew Winston was going to throw two picks and the Bucs were going to lose. He always does.

I hope Mr. Magoo brought his glasses. Two interceptions will lose this game.

  14. LakeLand Says:

    *second half

  15. Jameis Haters are Moronic Says:

I can’t believe how stupid the Jameis haters are. The dude is 24 and just completed 73% of his passes for 400 yards and 4 TD and they want him gone. he threw 41 passes and they only focus on one bad one.

  16. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Damn Jameis did great too bad defense plays like crap love my team we about to beat them browns

  17. Larry woods Says:

Yeah, blame It on Jameis smh. Frankly, if the defense had half a pulse we win this game. But it’s all on Jameis lol

  18. Sweeptheleg Says:

    @jameishaters

Also had a pick in the end zone and another inside the 5 and another that the defender dropped.

You are blind as a dead bat. He has peaked. Same mistakes over and over. Doesn’t matter what your stats are if you’re turning it over in the red zone.

But you’re too stupid to know any better obviously

  19. Jeagan1999 Says:

watched this play several times…Godwin was well covered and Jameis tried to force the ball in…under threw it….momentum killing turnover. That’s his MO….too many stupid choices….too many turnovers…too many missed opportunities.

  20. OneBucPerson Says:

Maybe, just maybe, if the defense wasn’t buttcheeks as always then Jameis wouldn’t have to play hero ball as much as he does?

  21. BuccoDav Says:

    Jameis Haters are Moronic Says:

Do you have reading comprehension issues? 1 poster said they were done with Winston. I think everyone else here wants to see him improve.
Oh, and we want the Joes to quit hyping him until he actually deserves it. Is he good? Yeah, but not great.
The hype when he was drafted was that he was a winner and would put this team on his shoulders and make everyone around him better. Then we heard that there wasn’t enough talent around him (apparently a great QB needs All Pros around him). Then we had “weapons for Winston”. Fitzpatrick showed us what can be with Winston’s weapons. Now it’s all the defenses’ fault.
FYI, ATL defense sucks too. What did they do? they outscored us!

  22. Bucnjim Says:

I’m not going to pin the loss on Winston but come on dude this is by far the worst defense you will see all year so those two turnovers hurt like hell. Took a lot of points off the board.

  23. tickrdr Says:

    New and updated!
Did you know that in the three years since Winston was drafted (not even counting this year’s games), that there is a group of games that the lowly Bucs (of Buccaneer Cove fame) went 15-4. That’s right 15 wins vs. only 4 losses.
No, it wasn’t when Jameis passed for more than 300 yards, because the Bucs were 4-7 in those games. Now 4 – 8, even with 395 yards today.
No, it wasn’t when Jameis passed for 3 or more TDs, because the Bucs were only 4-4 in those games. Now 4-5, even with 4 TDs today.
It wasn’t even when Jameis passed for LESS than 230 yards a game, though they were 9-4 in those games!
No, it was when they WON THE TURNOVER BATTLE!

So, let’s update the data to include this year. First game vs. NO, the Bucs won the TO battle, 0 – 2. In the game vs. Philly, tied at 2-2. Everyone knows the results vs Pitts, 4 TOs vs. only 1. And they lost the turnover battle vs. the Bears. So now, the Bucs are 1-14 W vs. L when they have 3 or more TOs in a game.
For the last three years plus five games:
    Win the TO battle: 16-4
    Tie the TO battle: 2-6
    Lose the TO battle: 4-21
    More than 3 TOs: 1-14
BTW: Fitz in seven games: Won the TO battle in 4
Tied the TO battle in 1. Lost the TO battle in 1. Record as starter 4 Wins vs. 3 Losses. Both QBs contributed turnovers in the loss at Chicago.
Points scored matter, turnovers matter, total yards not so much.

  24. Larry woods Says:

Lcleay you can’t read, but go off tough guy lol. The guy had over 300 and 4 tds yeah he had 2 picks but this was on the defense period. Some of y’all act like he can kick and play D, the hell else do you want from the guy genius. L

  25. BigMacAttack Says:

Meanwhile Hump was wide open while Jameis forced another pass. Jameis didn’t lose this game though but he’s not a franchise QB.

  26. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Bucnjim yeah and he put a lot on the board as well. Come on the real issue is this defense in fact has been garbage since Jameis has gotten here. Trade a few offensive players for some secondary….oh and fire the DC! You can’t expect miracle numbers by a QB every game.

  27. BuccoDav Says:

    Larry woods Says…

Larry, how many picks did Matt Ryan throw into double coverage?

  28. JabooBuc Says:

Joe, thank you for acknowledging this point. You simply can’t make that throw. You need points and are in prime position to get some. Not to mention that he rushed and forced a throw when he had Hump wide open underneath.

While I’m complaining, I hope Dirk has seen enough of the joke that is Benenoch. He is absolutely horrible. Any contact he makes is purely by chance and he routinely blows up our offense. If you are only as good as your weakest link then we are in big trouble

  29. J Says:

    Tua 2020

  30. WalkdaPlank Says:

I feel like if Desean Jackson walked up to Jameis Winston’s front door step and rang the doorbell and Jameis answered, that Jameis wouldn’t know who the hell he is. He can’t find this guy.

That’s my biggest gripe about Winston so far. Not the interceptions, or the fumbles or sacks taken. This man absolutely does not know Djax exists. How come Fitz has so much success with him but this year and last year he is a ghost to Jameis?

  31. NJBucsFan Says:

@Bucco I agree with you on all fronts. We want JW to improve. Problem is it’s been 4 years and still the same issues. Also I agree the Joes only add fuel to the fire. If they continue to call Ray Jay the Den of Depression until there is a winning a season there, they by god have to stop calling Winston Ameeica’s QB until he’s more than a 1 time Probowl Alternate who has done little to improve.

  32. Bucnjim Says:

Tickrdr posted interesting info about turnovers and Bucs losing. There is a correlation between losing the turnover battle and losing games in the NFL but seems the chance of losing is even higher than average with the Bucs.

  33. LakeLand Says:

It’s a fact that the Bucs are 18-28 with Jameis Winston as their QB

    This is not hate

    This is reality!

  34. LakeLand Says:

The passing yards and everything else is irrelevant

The only thing that matters is the WIN

  35. Larry woods Says:

Buck Dave there was no double coverage for him to throw into because we concede 15 flipping yards off the rip in this garbage defense. When the defense was semi decent we had a 9-7 record but it’s all on Jameis smh

  36. Resurrection of Fitz Says:

    Winston has our offense underachieving.

  37. NPRSageBoy Says:

Jameis should never be confused with an NFL QB

  38. Resurrection of Fitz Says:

    Winston = Matthew Stafford

  39. NJBucsFan Says:

@Resurrection that is close but Stafford has been to the playoffs 3 times…the first time he was 23 so Winston is behind.

  40. WalkdaPlank Says:

At least Stafford puts up 4000 and 5000 yard seasons coonsistently.

  41. Jeffbuc Says:

I have been the biggest jameis supporter. But I am done he is who he is. A guy that can make all the throws but 3 to 5 times a game is going to force a throw. Just like the broadcasters showed humphries was wide open for the check down. But jameis has to force it to a double covered guy. Every year it’s a new excuse for this guy. He is the ultimate coach killer. He plays great for spurts but we all know we are just waiting on that one bone headed throw that never should be made. If he hasn’t changed after 4 years he never will. Time to trade him and let him be someone else’s problem. Sure 6 times a year we will look stupid for trading him but the other 10 games his new team will reaizw why we did. You can’t force throws that aren’t there. I thought he would cahange and it could be coached out of him but it won’t. We need to get rid of him and the coaching staff and start new. We will never go anywhere with turnover machine winston. And it is hard for me to type that. But I have seen enough from him to realize he is not the answer. A backup journey man had 3 400 yard games with the same offense. He can not hit a deep ball to save his life. He is holding us back.

  42. NJBucsFan Says:

    ☝️ 100% accurate

  43. dis Says:

I hope he leaves too. I’m sick of rooting for this crappy team, crappy fans, crappy city.

  44. Calbucsfan Says:

Sadly, Jameis has peaked, you are absolutely right JeffB, time to trade him, IF there is even a team that would trade for him! Licht has made one more draft mistake, he should have traded him then to a QB hungry team (Browns, Bills or Jets?) and traded-up in the first round and drafted a QB instead of a DT. I posted that before the draft and still believe it would have been the better move.

  45. Uncle Says:

None of you idiots decide about JW thank heavens. He will get a contract and you will all be thankful in the future.

  46. BuccoDav Says:

    Larry,
Yeah, the defense is bad, so is Atlanta’s… Matt Ryan outplayed our defense, Jameis didn’t outplay ATL’s bad defense. And he hurt his team by throwing picks that he didn’t need to force.

  47. bucfan1988 Says:

Ok when it comes to defenses, Bucs D is FAR worse than Atlanta’s D. It is all about scheme. Atlanta’s D is attaching and we have a pu$$y D that’s weak and reactive. Weak-a$$ zone defense with corners that are built to press and play man. Good ole Smitty doesn’t even play to the strength of his secondary players. That my friends is pure garbage coaching. If press-box Smitty isn’t gone, we will be 2-14…PERIOD!!!

Then Glazers will clean house and hopefully Hire Jim Schwartz as HC. He knows what it takes to implement a reasonable defense.

I really don’t want to have to wait ANOTHER year to see an average defense on the field so if you could fire Smitty now, I’d appreciate it! Thank you 🙂

  48. Mike30#1Bucfan Says:

I guess 10-15 for 117 0TD’s 0INT’S would be better huh Winston haters!

  49. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

JeffBuc and CalBucsFan: agree. This was the year to draft an accurate QB

  50. Jordan L Says:

    He sucks

  51. Calbucsfan Says:

Wins are all that matters, everything else is just statistics.

Yes, it’s a team sport and all coaches and teamates contribute to that record too, but other than the center, no player touches the ball on every offensive player than the QB.

No other player analyzes the defense before the snap and can change the play at the line other than the QB. No other player can put their offensive teammate in a better position to succeed at their craft than a QB who steps into a pocket formed by his line, callout the hole for an RB to hit, or lead a receiver with a pass to an open zone to make a catch and run.

QB’s get all the glory when they win and most of the blame when they lose, that’s the way it goes in football. Jameis is 16-28 as a starter. I see it for what it is, he is a QB that has been given the keys to drive the franchise, and while he’s been driving the team is BottomLine a loser.

  52. BucNAE Says:

How are we talking about Winston still? If the kicker makes an extra point we only need 3 points. If the defense gets just one stop in the first half or on the final drive we kick or score for the win. The 2INTs sucked but the did not influence the outcome of this game. They were just stats. Winston throws 30/41 for 395 yds and 4TDs. There is no where in this league that isn’t acceptable or exceptional. Funny thing Fitz did the same thing and everyone was making excuses about the ints weren’t relevant since he threw for 400yds and 4tds and almost completed the comeback. GTFO.

  53. bigdaddio Says:

Winston made a handful of really good throws. He made a lot of ok throws that were completions but he killed any chance of YAC. He made about 5 really dumb throws including both INTs. He’s not real good. I guess he’s not the worst, so we have that going for us. He’s in the bottom of the middle 3rd. Maybe the middle of the middle 3rd. Whatever, I think that is who he is and will be. He has, arguably the best top to bottom reciever corpse in the NFL so of course he will put up big numbers, but he’s just not that good. Any NFL QB (as we saw with Fitz) can put up big numbers with the talent around him.

Mike Smith still needs to go. It only took him 18 quarters to figure out you can’t play soft base defense and let other teams run wild.

  54. Troy Says:

    Agree 100% bigdaddio.

  55. DB55 Says:

    Tickrdr

Great post! It tells me our defense doesn’t get enough turnovers. The Bucs have only 1 interception as a team going into week 7. We have 8 sacks as a team and JPP has 5 of those. If we can’t create turnovers how do we win the battle?

  56. NJBucsFan Says:

@bigdaddio 100% spot on…and there is no more progression to be had. That’s evident after 3 plus years.

  57. Rod Munch Says:

The play that broke the back was Dirk declining the penalty that would have given the Bucs a 4th and 5 at the Falcons 45, instead Dirk took a mediocre punt and of course the Falcons drove the field and got a TD.

That’s Dirk, he’s a coward who seems completely unaware that his defense is garbage. With 3:45 or whatever it was left he doesn’t onside kick, he just kicks the ball, which leads to a long a FG. You have to hold them to a FG or better anyways, so onside kick, when you don’t get it, you stop them or hold them and you get the ball back with more than a 1:13 left. If you don’t hold them then it doesn’t matter, the game is over in either case. How people defend Dirk’s cowardly playcalling is beyond me.

  58. TBTemojin Says:

I don’t understand how people can look at this historically awful defense and claim the QB is the reason we are losing games…. Our QBs have to consistently put up Hall of Fame numbers to win games with this defense. It’s not gonna happen. Tom Brady would only win 4-5 games with this defense!!!! When you throw the ball 30+ times INTs are going to happen. Can’t expect Jameis or Fitz to consistently put up 40 just to have a chance at a W. SMH fix the defense!!!

  59. WyldKat Says:

The plays that killed it was the FG before halftime. Against what other team is the other side going to come out with no fear and move the ball in under 30 seconds?

The Falcons did not hesitate to go for that FG. Kneel down, hell no. They KNEW they were going to be able to move the ball into range and kick it.

  60. Dapostman Says:

26 seconds left in the half and Tampa kicks it out of the end zone. A mortar kick to the 5 was the play there to make Atlanta use clock to bring it up the field. Little things add up and this is one reason why the Bucs lose.
