It’s All About Confidence

It’s all about confidence.

When Bucs coach Dirk Koetter sent out Chandler Catanzaro to attempt a 59-yard game-winning field goal in overtime today against the Browns, a lot of people thought Koetter was nuts.

Just earlier in the game, Catanzaro missed an extra point. Again. And he missed a 40-yard game-winner in regulation. Who the hell had confidence in Catanzaro?

Everybody on the Bucs’ bench, Bucs corner Ryan Smith told Joe after the game.

“I was thinking confidence,” Smith said after the game of the moment Catanzaro stepped onto the field with the long shadows growing. “We have confidence in everybody.”

Smith said that despite Catanzaro already missing an extra point, he wasn’t fazed by Koetter calling on Catanzaro.

“Nobody is perfect,” Smith said.

Of course, Smith told Joe part of that confidence came from watching Catanzaro boot long-distance kicks in practice. And Smith said that if Koetter wasn’t confident in Catanzaro, he would have either punted or kept the offense on the field.

“He sent him out there because he has confidence in him,” Smith said. “Nobody had a doubt.”

Utter failure across the board. One shaky second chance 59 yard field goal kick away from losing the battle of the Toilet Bowl. The Bucs being the first to peek their head above the rim in a showdown to determine who is really the worst of the modern era. Must watch television for most of America.

  2. lurker Says:

if the season is over, quit posting

  3. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

We’re gonna need all that confidence to go in Cincinnati and get a W

  4. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

He will be cut by noon tomorrow.

  5. Alanbucsfan Says:

3 missed xpoints in 6 games, missed 40yder in regulation to win –
Bucs need to bring in competition NOW.. stop putting up with not executing

  6. Rod Munch Says:

3.5-million guaranteed dollars says he won’t get cut.

  7. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

He probably saved his job with that kick. No one doubts the strength of his leg, just like no one doubts the strength of Jay Miss’s arm. The issue for both is accuracy.

  8. LakeLand Says:

They mobbed Roberto the exact same way

And he was gone a few weeks later

  9. JimmyJack Says:

As a fan I have no confidence in this team.

  10. JimmyJack Says:

Alan…… As far as I’m concerned if he hits a 59 yarder to win the game he saved his job. But if he’s not perfect next week I’m yanking him.

  11. pabucsfan Says:

You guys really know how to celebrate a win… And lakeland aguayo make like a 39 yarder to win a game. We just won a game by a 59 yard field goal. we won a walk off on a 59 yard field goal. enjoy it. be miserable tomorrow

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Guy went from goat to hero…..great story……can’t we all just enjoy a win…..an ugly win….but a win…..just imagine how it would be feeling to have lost today.

  13. JimmyJack Says:

Pab……I guess we are all different but I just expect a better team then one that can barely eek out a win at home vs a below average Brown team.

  14. JimmyJack Says:

TampaBayBucFan that’s a decent point. Wasn’t much of a feel good win for me but I’ll take it. Last week was pretty demoralizing, at least we can be glad to not be in that same place.

  15. Rod Munch Says:

Roberto didn’t miss any FG or XP that cost his team the game, meanwhile Catanzaro already has one of those on his Bucs resume, and nearly another one today.

Anywho fire the special teams coach, we saw what a difference the firing Smith made today, and the special teams has for the most part been just as bad as the defense.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Tampabaybucfan – Sort of feels like a loss, in particular since the W was negated by the awful Ravens and Eagles blowing 4th quarter leads. The stupid Panthers are a 63-yard FG and an Eagles collapse away from being tied with the Falcons for last place.

So telling the truth is miserable
    Ok

  18. NPRSageBoy Says:

Now that Kwon is finished, Licht should package Cantanzaro and Jameis and see if he can pry an MLB from someone.
Kickers are a dime a dozen and both Fitz and Griffin are better than Jameis at this point.

  19. Getaclue Says:

There are guys missing kicks every week. If you are blaming the kicker cause Winston can’t score when he has the ball in his hands with a chance to win the game then don’t call him a franchise qb. Brees, Rodgers,Brady finish the game when the ball is in their hand to end the game. He had three chances to score and couldn’t do anything except call his own plays and move the team backward doing it. That defense played their ass off and that forced fumbled by Auclair was clutch. He was very good running the ball and smart with it too. He can’t hit a deep pass that isn’t a 50/50 ball. He later sharp in intermediate routes and he gets tunnel vision on short passes where he doesn’t see defenders. He totally disappeared , you can tell the wrs we’re frustrated . There’s a reason he didn’t get a “C”

  20. Lucious Selmon Says:

I’ve tried to defend Gump, but drafting a K 2nd round, who had progressively gotten worse every year iu college, followed by gifting a guaranteed contract to a guy who you haven’t even seen in person (instead of making 6 guys show up to compete for the job), is direct evidence of GM ineptitude.

But now, because the guy pulled out a “hero” kick for a win, we will now have tosuffer through more missed extra points before our Gump replaces he, who shouldn’t have been gifted a guaranteed contract to begin with.

  21. pabucsfan Says:

lakeland no im saying enjoy the win and complain tomorrow if you feel the need to. you do realize last year the super bowl winning team eagles had to beat the worst team giants on a last second 60 yard field goal? or do you just think every win is an easy blow out? enjoy the win

  22. pabucsfan Says:

Cantanzaro sucks but if you cant get excited about your team winning on a walk off 59 yard field goal then stop watching football

  23. MadMax Says:

GJ Chandler…clutch kick that i’ll take every time.

  24. bigdaddio Says:

Ironic thing is, if that kick was 40 yards he misses it too. The ball hooked inside the upright in the last 10-15 yards.

  25. Buc1987 Says:

“Brees, Rodgers,Brady finish the game when the ball is in their hand to end the game.”

    GetAClue…nice name…now get one.

Yes they put their kickers in the position to win all the time….what’s your point? You never watched football before and you’re new to the game…okay I got it.

New Orleans, New England and Green Bay have won MANY games via game winning kicks….

    Your point is again?

Oh the point is you don’t have a clue….

  26. Rod Munch Says:

It’s actually Dirk that took the ball out of his hands, just like he took the ball out of Fitz’s hands at the end of the Steelers game. Dirk is a loser that plays for FGs, and the one time Jameis ignored him and took the game into his own hands – the team won. Dirk isn’t head coaching material, he’s an OC that should have never been more than an OC (and he was a good OC when that was his only job).

  27. Buc-n-Idaho Says:

Kickers don’t win games. They contribute to a win when they hit from 60+ yards. Otherwise they just do their job. If your not in the high 90’s percentage-wise on extra points, and if your missing game-ending chip shots, your not doing your job and you must go!!!
