The Rise Of Chris Godwin

September 7th, 2018

“Dang Mr. Licht, that Godwin kid has skills.”

There are hot takes and there are bold takes.

And it seems Jenna Laine of ESPN is in the bold take corner.

For those not knowing what a hot take is, it is something said on one of these arguing shows on sports TV networks or on sports radio shows. A panelist or host just throws something outrageous against the wall knowing full well it is unlikely to stick.

But boy, will it get a reaction. This Colin Cowturd is notorious for trafficking in such nonsense.

A bold take is something rooted in realism. It may not happen. It may sound crazy. But it is in the realm of possibility.

So Laine decided to take a step on the ledge and predict that second-year wide receiver Chris Godwin will become the Bucs’ No. 2 receiver pushing aside speedy DeSean Jackson.

Godwin will surpass DeSean Jackson for the second-most receiving yards, finishing with 750 — second only to Mike Evans. Godwin was arguably the most consistent receiver during the offseason and training camp, and he showed strong chemistry with both Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jameis Winston.

Time will tell if this comes true but it isn’t far-fetched at all. If Godwin’s rookie season is a barometer, Jameis Winston had much better chemistry with Godwin than he did with Jackson.

Now remember, when the Bucs signed Jackson over a year ago, prized JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman predicted Jackson would not see the end of his three-year contract with the Bucs. If Godwin does unseat Jackson as the No. 2 receiver, Joe doubts they will keep Jackson for that third season at his projected $10 million salary for 2019.

If the prediction does come true that’s a good thing. DeSean can still finish with 740 for it to come true. I’ll take that. Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Bird Says:

We need both guys this year to step up

Godwin as the big / strong possession receiver just moving guys out of his way

Desean as a small/speedy ninja type receiver who will take the top off a defense and open up the short and intermediate throws

And on the other side , mike Evans is literally open every play with his combination of size and quicks and wingspan. Two strides and he is already 10 yards down the field

    Go bucs!

  3. Bob in Valrico Says:

It puzzles me that Jameis needed an extra year to develop chemistry with both
Evans and Jackson. Maybe Koetter should analyze the route tree. There is too much emphasis on the “GO” routes that often are overthrown.

I love ME13 but what happens if Godwin actually becomes better?

Because both of these guys are class acts I think they would handle it well and it would probably be splitting hairs as to which one is the best.

Dare we hope for the SB Steelers glory when we all struggled to say who was better….Swann or Stallworth. Swann had a little more charisma but on the field they were BOTH great. I can now easily imagine that for the Bucs!

  5. Kobe Faker Says:

Djax and his 10 mil contract is gone…

We need that money to bring in FA Ronald Darby

“We will be playing man 2 man defense next year in Tampa”

    Jim Schwartz

  6. George Says:

That would be a good problem to have. Mike got a 5 year extension. He is signed to 2023. Godwin will be under contract thru 2020. At that time they will be able to pay Godwin also.

  7. horse liver Says:

Bucs could / should have two thousand yard WRs this season, Evans and Godwin. I just don’t see D Jax panning out, as hard as everyone including him is trying.

  8. orlbucfan Says:

Godwin was a keeper from the time he stepped on the field last year. Wasn’t he an UDFA? He’s better than Jackson. He’s also not a whiny Diva. Don’t forget we have the 4 tight end musketeers, and they all can catch the football. I’s LIKE IT!! 🙂

  9. Broy34 Says:

Did someone rly just ask if Godwin was an UDFA!?

  12. Not there yet Says:

The Rise Of Chris Godwin can’t happen in training camp and preseason. That’s saying a lot and the only way it happens it’s if we don’t have a quarterback capable of throwing a deep ball

this is the NFL not the arena league!!!!!!….get a clue….

Saying Chris Godwin will supplant DeSean Jackson as the Bucs’ #2 receiver is over the top. The Bucs have four starting wide receivers, Jackson, Godwin, Mike Evans, and Adam Humphries. Each man plays a different and unique role and I believe that will become apparent within the first six games of 2018. The number of catches and how many yards each accumulates will be irrelevant to the production of the whole. It’s called synergy where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

  15. BucNole Says:

This is Djax last year for sure. . .. that is why I was glad we at least kept Bobo on the PS this year. . . he has a skill set similar to DJ and can take over that role – but not as a #2

  16. AlabamaBucFan Says:

I think Djax realizes that Godwin has already surpassed him as an outside receiver, thus he jumped at the idea of returning punts. I think the bucs will use Godwin as the outside receiver on 1st and 2nd downs with him sliding over to the slot on 3rd downs. Djax will remain at the slot on the first two down and sliding to the outside 3rd and long. Humphries will be the old man out until one of them gets in an injury. He may be used late in the game as a fresh body.

It will be interesting how well the bucs decide to use a mixture of WRs and TEs as we are loaded with great talent at both positions. Monkens like to use a spread offense so I suspect we will see a lot of 3 – 4 set WR or two TE packages.
